00:27So my husband and I have been EV owners for three years.
00:31So that's not new to us.
00:33But in early November, Jen had what she described as a frightening experience
00:38driving alone at night in Sanford.
00:40The car started breaking very rapidly.
00:45And then the dashboard started basically like flashing.
00:50The Rivian SUV rolled to a stop.
00:52She smelled, then saw smoke coming into the cabin.
00:55هيcalled Rivian through the company's app
00:58and according to Jen
00:59they advised her to use the SOS
01:01emergency button in the car
01:03but that didn't work
01:05after she made the 911 call
01:15the brakes
01:16it started like vibrating
01:17and I am actually locked in the vehicle
01:20and I cannot get out
01:22Sanford Fire Cruise responded
01:24No smoke was showing when they arrived
01:26But Jen said the Rivian started rolling backwards
01:29The firefighters deployed the emergency EV plug
01:33And immobilized her vehicle
01:34Multiple crew members started researching
01:37How to be able to get her out of the car
01:39They kept pounding on the car
01:41And trying to figure out a way to get in it
01:44To get me out
01:45And so it was just super scary
01:49I was in the car for about 45 minutes
01:51They learned she just had to pull a manual release handle
01:54Quickly to get the door open
01:56We saw the manual release handle
01:58Illustrated in the Rivian R1S Owner's Guide
02:01As part of a statement
02:02A Rivian spokesperson wrote
02:04We take the safety of our customers very seriously
02:07Our investigation into this incident
02:09Indicates a short in an electrical system
02:12Caused the contained smoke issue
02:14The customer experienced
02:15And added the manual door handle
02:17Was working properly at the time
02:19When Jen went to collect her belongings from it
02:22At the Rivian shop
02:23It was wrapped partially in plastic
02:25And roped off
02:26While she said Rivian initially offered them $1,000
02:29They just wanted their money back
02:32And to get rid of the lease
02:34After Action 9 first reached out to Rivian
02:37The company has now offered them a full refund
02:40It was just really scary
02:41Because I don't feel safe being in that car
02:45I don't feel like it will be a safe automobile
02:48To have in my garage with my family
02:51The Sanford Fire Battalion Chief told us
02:53It's recommending anyone with the electronically controlled door locks
02:57To learn the emergency exit procedure
02:59So they can get out in a situation like this
03:02The Center for Auto Safety
03:03Is pushing for a universal standard
03:06For the manual door releases
03:07That all manufacturers would have to follow
