00:00Video games have been part of our lives for decades, and the consoles we played them on
00:04helped define entire generations.
00:07From living room family fun to epic solo adventures, consoles have given us some of our best gaming
00:13memories.
00:14Today we're looking back at the greatest video game consoles of all time, the systems
00:18that changed the industry, broke records, and left a permanent mark on gaming history.
00:25We started with the Nintendo Entertainment System released in North America in 1985.
00:32At the time, the gaming industry had nearly collapsed after the 1983 video game crash.
00:39Confidence in video games was at an all-time low, but the NES changed everything.
00:45With titles like Super Mario Bros., Metroid, and The Legend of Zelda, the NES didn't just
00:51bring back video games.
00:52It laid the blueprint for what console gaming would become.
00:56It introduced iconic franchises, standardized the home console controller, and gave us
01:01the first real sense of narrative adventure in gaming.
01:05And let's not forget, the NES also cemented Nintendo's reputation as the king of innovation
01:11in gaming.
01:12Without the NES, the video game industry as we know it might not even exist.
01:16If the NES saved the industry, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System perfected it.
01:23Released in 1991, the SNES brought 16-bit graphics, richer sound, and deeper gameplay experiences.
01:32It's remembered as the golden age of 2D gaming with classics like Super Mario World, The Legend
01:37of Zelda, A Link to the Past, Donkey Kong Country, Street Fighter 2, and Chrono Trigger.
01:42These weren't just games.
01:44They were cultural milestones.
01:47The NES also introduced Mode 7 graphics which allowed for suedo 3D effects that blew people's
01:53minds at the time.
01:55Racing around in Super Mario Kart or flying in pilot rings showed gamers something they'd
01:59never seen before.
02:02Even today, SAES games are studied, speedrun, and re-released because they represent peak
02:07design, simple to pick up, yet endlessly replayable.
02:12Next comes the Sony PlayStation released in 1994.
02:15This was Sony's first step into gaming, and it was a giant leap.
02:19The PlayStation changed everything by embracing CD-ROM technology that met bigger games, full
02:25motion video, voice acting, and more complex worlds than what cartridges could handle.
02:32This console gave us Final Fantasy 7, which blew minds with its cinematic storytelling, Metal
02:37Gear Solid, which redefined stealth gameplay, and Resident Evil, which kickstarted survival
02:43horror, and let's not forget mascots like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon.
02:49The PlayStation just didn't compete with Nintendo and Sega.
02:52It reshaped the industry, paving the way for 3D gaming and cementing Sony as a gaming giant.
03:00Then came the PlayStation 2, released in 2000.
03:02To this day, it's still the best-selling video game console of all time, with over 155 million
03:09units sold worldwide.
03:12Its success came from three things.
03:14A massive library of games, backward compatibility with PS1 titles, and the fact that it doubled
03:20as an affordable DVD player at a time when those were expensive.
03:25For many households, the PS2 was their first DVD player and gaming system in one.
03:31The library is legendary.
03:33Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts, God of War, Shadow of the Colossus,
03:41the list goes on forever.
03:43The PS2 just didn't dominate sales.
03:45It created entire gaming generations.
03:48If you grew up in the 2000s, chances are the PS2 was a part of your life.
03:54The mid-2000s brought the Xbox 360, Microsoft's breakout success.
03:59Released in 2005, it quickly became the home of HD gaming.
04:04The 360's real legacy lies in Xbox Live.
04:08Online gaming wasn't new, but the 360 made it mainstream, simple, and social.
04:13Voice chat, friends list, achievements, all of these became standard features because of
04:18the 360.
04:20The lineup was equally strong.
04:22Halo 3 defined multiplayer shooters, Gears of War pushed graphics forward, and Mass Effect
04:28showed us storytelling on a grand scale.
04:31Third party support was massive, with Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare making competitive
04:36online gaming a cultural phenomenon.
04:39Yes, the infamous Red Ring of Death haunted it, but even with hardware issues, the Xbox 360
04:45remains one of the most influential consoles ever made.
04:50Then there was the Nintendo Wii, released in 2006.
04:53While Microsoft and Sony were focused on HD graphics, Nintendo went in a completely different
04:59direction, motion controls.
05:02The Wii became a worldwide sensation, selling over 100 million units.
05:07It wasn't just for hardcore gamers.
05:09Families, grandparents, even people who had never played a video game before were bowling
05:14in Wii sports.
05:16It also gave us an unforgettable Nintendo staple, Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and
05:22The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess.
05:24The Wii proved that accessibility and fun could outshine pure power, and it brought gaming into
05:30living rooms around the world like never before.
05:34Finally, we have the Nintendo Switch, launched in 2017.
05:38The Switch broke boundaries with its hybrid design.
05:41Play it on TV, or take it on the go.
05:44It's been home to instant classics.
05:46The Legend of Zelda, Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, and Animal Crossing New Horizons.
05:52Plus, its multiplayer hits like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe keep players coming back.
05:59With over 140 million units sold and counting, the Switch has already cemented itself as one
06:04of the most successful and beloved consoles of all time.
06:09Of course, no list is complete without its honorable mentions.
06:12The Sega Genesis, which gave us the great Nintendo Sega rivalry and Sonic the Hedgehog.
06:18The Nintendo 64 with 4 player couch gaming and titles like GoldenEye 007 and Ocarina of Time.
06:26The Game Boy, the handheld that dominated for over a decade.
06:30The Dreamcast, ahead of its time with online play and a unique library, even if it burned
06:35out too soon.
06:37And more recently, the PlayStation 4, which delivered powerhouse exclusives like The Last
06:42of Us Part II and God of War.
06:45These consoles didn't just play games.
