In Hour "Tualess," Mike McDaniel leaves the guys speechless after giving an interesting response to the "Delay of game." In order to fill the gaps, we open up the phone lines for frustrated callers. How long does it take for change? Are Dolfans willing to stay patient?
00:03After the game, Mike McDaniel had some thoughts
00:06on the delay of game penalty late.
00:08Here's what he had to say on that.
00:10That's kind of where the frustration lies for me,
00:13is there was not, there was, you know,
00:17it wasn't deciding that that cost us
00:22or a late play call, which that happens at times.
00:30Um, but this was not one of those times
00:32I got to play call in, but I'd need to do a better job
00:36supervising all of the orchestration
00:38within our multiple personnel groups.
00:40So, um, we're, to win games, you have to win the game,
00:45um, not lose the game, honestly.
00:48And that, that is how you lose the game.
00:51You're moving the, you're moving the ball down the field.
00:55You're first and 10, and then you find yourself
00:57at second and 20, um, uh, you know, that, uh,
01:03that was critical.
01:08Wow.
01:10It's a big word for me, dog.
01:16Is that what I sounded like when I say words mean words?
01:19Because I want to punch myself in the throat.
01:25To win games, you have to win the game,
01:27um, not lose the game, honestly.
01:30And that, that is how you lose the game.
01:33You're moving the, you're moving the ball down the field.
01:38Oh.
01:39Um, what?
01:50To win games, you have to win the game, um, not lose the game.
01:55Somebody said Leroy being annoyed by a Rambler
01:58is the Spider-Man meme.
02:00I, there's no way.
02:07To win games, you have to win the game, um, not lose the game.
02:11Fair point.
02:12Makes me not want to talk.
02:14If I sound anything close to that.
02:16It's crazy.
02:18Huh?
02:20Calls?
02:21You want to get some calls?
02:23I mean.
02:24Handsome Daffy, uh, to be on the call,
02:27you got to be on the call, not, not be on the call.
02:31Yeah.
02:31I mean, I don't know what that was.
02:33I mean, listen, good morning to all of y'all, man.
02:38It sucks even more knowing I'm from a football town,
02:41from little league all the way to college.
02:44And no one wants to play for the Dolphins.
02:47Like you can't name me a superstar who wants to play for the Dolphins.
02:52Because this organization is just so terrible.
02:54They're so mediocre.
02:57All we do is lose.
02:58It's bad, man.
02:59Right.
03:00We, we don't, we don't do anything great.
03:02Like my brother played 10 years in the NFL.
03:05I accidentally played for the Dolphins.
03:08He didn't want to sell drugs.
03:10No one wants to play for them.
03:12And this is the reason why.
03:13Look how they're ran.
03:14Like it's straight mediocrity.
03:16But when you go to like little league all the way to college,
03:19we got dogs down here.
03:21And they don't even want to play for us.
03:23Like growing up, they want to play for the Cowboys.
03:24They want to play for the Steelers.
03:25They want to play for organizations who are established.
03:27Because kids want to play for winners.
03:29We're just not that.
03:32It's tough to answer, Daffy.
03:33I'm sorry.
03:35Please tell your brother not to go sell drugs.
03:36Man, I, the last time I've been this frustrated.
03:49And, and if I tell you, you'll understand why I'm a little more patient with the Dolphins
03:55and everybody get mad at me.
03:57Okay.
03:57Because I grew up as a Saints fan.
04:01Now, the difference is the, throughout my whole childhood, until I went to college,
04:08the Saints never even had a winning record.
04:11They wore bags over their heads to games.
04:14Saw some bags yesterday.
04:15Like, it's like, and, and so, and, and so, it, it's, it's unfortunate.
04:28I've been on both sides of it.
04:30But the one thing that changed is I've been played.
04:38Right?
04:39And I would guess if I was still that kid walking around the streets of New Orleans,
04:45when the only conversation you could have is how bad your team sucked,
04:50that it would be very disappointing.
04:54But we all seem to rally behind it.
04:57Right?
04:58Like the Aints, the paper bags, right?
05:02Like all, all these things that, like, yeah.
05:06It felt like the fans came in yesterday pissed off, though.
05:09Like, they were ready to boo their ass.
05:11Leroy, the first drive, they were losing.
05:13The first drive, which is like, all right, all right.
05:16They were so ready to just turn on this team.
05:19And I feel like it's going to be like that, like, every week this year.
05:22But my question is this.
05:25The offense had a three and out.
05:27Yep.
05:27And you booed them because you want to be.
05:30A three and out with a callback interception.
05:33They thought there was going to be an interception.
05:34Right.
05:34So, it's still a three and out.
05:37But the defense hasn't given up a punt in six quarters.
05:43Like, I would be booing them if I was a booer.
05:48I think they all deserve boos.
05:50I think everything is boo-worthy right now.
05:52Everything.
05:53Everything is – that's just where everybody's at right now.
05:56You know, when you get to the banners by the stadium and you get to this point,
06:02I told you, I said last week, I'm like, I'm – you know, Tua was sitting there
06:06and he's like, yeah, I don't hear any of the noise.
06:08It's like, well, you're going to hear it if – you're going to hear it on Sunday
06:11because this is just – we can tell.
06:13You know when the tone base, the tone of a fan base is turning
06:18and everybody was on edge going into it.
06:21And that's the home opener.
06:23Right.
06:23The home opener.
06:25Right.
06:25I can honestly say that you don't really – you acknowledge it,
06:36but you don't really focus on it, right?
06:39But here's what I learned a long time ago.
06:43Don't mention it.
06:46Don't say anything, right?
06:48Simply because it doesn't help.
06:53Right.
06:54I learned that, like – and keep in mind, I played for the Browns.
06:56We were pretty bad for a stretch there.
06:59You were?
07:01Including the 3-13 year, my rookie year, when, you know,
07:06some of the things people are saying about Grant, they were saying about me.
07:09Why didn't you guys try to win the game?
07:12Because to win the game, you got to win the game, not lose the game.
07:15Because all our guys were old and they were like, just get this last year in.
07:19And, like, yeah, and keep in mind, we were getting booed in my rookie year,
07:28but let's be clear.
07:30They had just gone to two consecutive AMC championship games.
07:34Oh, yeah, you thought you were going to –
07:35Right.
07:36So it wasn't, you know, like this.
07:38And they were still booing.
07:40And, you know, of course you're human, right?
07:45Like, to say you don't hear it is not being very human.
07:55But then when you say, I don't pay no attention to that, it almost revs it up.
08:00So you just – I just don't – like I say, man, I'm just trying to win this game.
08:05I'm trying to do all these things right here.
08:07Like, I'm not trying to, you know, hear all that stuff.
08:10So.
08:11Junior, what's Junior got to say?
08:12Hey, listen, love the show.
08:16First of all, let's fire McDaniel.
08:20Let's get rid of him.
08:21Trey Tua, send him anywhere, get a third.
08:24Trey Tyreek.
08:25Get a third.
08:25Trey Tua.
08:26Get the rookie come in.
08:28You know what I mean?
08:29The year to watch.
08:31We're going to end up 0-3 unless something really bad happens to Buck's vote.
08:34God forgive that.
08:35Don't want that to happen to Josh Allen.
08:37Other than that, this year is done.
08:39Let's rebuild.
08:40Let's do it right.
08:41Don't worry.
08:42Nothing's happening to Josh Allen.
08:43He's made out of granite.
08:45So, but my question to that would be when you say let's, you know, give it everybody and let's start over.
08:59I understand that.
09:00I'm not, I'm not arguing that point, but you do realize to do all that, you're starting over again, usually with a new coach, a new young quarterback, and you're in that cycle again.
09:15Yeah, I think, I think that they're fine with that right now.
09:19I think that's where it is.
09:20I don't, I do, I will say I haven't heard one good idea to replace him because everybody's telling me Gruden and Belichick and I'm like, you got to be bleeping kidding me.
09:27Right.
09:27And that being said, but here's my other point.
09:31I've been around here long enough to know that when you pray for change and you demand change and you demand new this and new that and whatever, when the new guys come in, you're not very patient either.
09:44So, that's where, and that's why I come from the standpoint that I come from is not because I don't think maybe change could be better, but change is going to take more time and usually fans don't have that time or don't want to hear that.
10:03So, can you, as a fan, you can't have it both ways.
10:08So, are you cool with change or are you going to be patient to let the next regime kind of play out and build the team the way they want to or whatever?
10:20Because that might take a couple of years.
10:22Yeah.
10:22The one thing you can say, though, is that this was a little bit of a weird regime because, you know, Brian Flores left with a winning team, you know, and they kind of hit the ground running with Mike McDaniel.
10:34It wasn't really a case of a full rebuild when he was the coach.
10:37Right.
10:37And that early success was, you know, what threw you off.
10:42I get it.
10:43I get it.
10:43But, again, any time you have change, right, very rarely that was kind of an anomaly, to be honest with you.
10:52Very rarely when you have change, unless you've had some success, then, you know, it was going to be tough.
11:02For example, when Andy Reid went to Kansas City, they had a good team.
11:07So, you know, like, so how are you going to be patient to go through that process of, you know, because usually when you change regimes, you change a lot of players, you change the system, you change the way in which you play.
11:27So, to go from, for example, to go from a Mike McDaniel to a Dan Campbell, how long is that going to take?
11:34Because you're talking about changing.
11:36That's pretty much changing the way you do business.
11:40No, I agree.
11:40Listen, there was a time where Dan Campbell was crying on the podium in Detroit.
11:44There was, I mean, the Dolphins waxed the Lions Mike McDaniel's first year.
11:48Yeah.
11:49You know?
11:50Yep.
11:51On the road, I think.
11:52So, I'm with you.
11:55I get you.
11:55But I just think that this whole thing feels like it's, you know, it's been the Tua Mike McDaniel era.
12:03And I don't know, man, I kind of felt like there was a little snippiness.
12:07There was some, there was some passive aggressive stuff happened after that game yesterday that you could just feel with bad teams.
12:15You knew that this was going to be a sensitive season as it was.
12:19And it already feels like it's getting to them because like, I'm sure they're thinking of themselves and I'm sure you could sit here and be like, Hey, we were a Devon H and step away from this being a much different conversation today.
12:32But the problem is, you know, it's like the old give an inch, take a mile.
12:36The Dolphins have taken so many miles of people's beliefs.
12:41They're not giving you inches anymore.
12:43Like, sorry.
12:44Like that.
12:44Nobody wants to hear that.
12:45They were a toe away from being one and one.
12:48You've lost that with them.
12:50You are what you are.
12:52I don't like, I don't care about any of that.
12:53Like you are, you are what you are, regardless of what the circumstances are you at the end of the year, you can't go back and say we were a toe away from this or a toe.
13:02Nobody cares.
13:03All right.
13:04All you care about is, is what your record is at the end of the year.
13:08Right.
13:08All right.
13:09So from, from that standpoint, I'm just, I guess I'm a little more patient than most.
13:17Although I will say this.
13:19Yikes.
13:20Yeah.
13:20You know, right.
13:21Like I can't, like, I can't.
13:24But as a person on the outside looking in, there's only so much I can say before it becomes overwhelming, even for me.
13:34Right.
13:35Like, and, and it's getting to that point because the thing about bad situations, it's always something else.
13:46So your offense plays a little bit better.
13:49They move the ball.
13:49I see some, you know, deeper balls being thrown.
13:53I see balls being thrown outside, deeper, like, you know, take care of what I told you before, taking care, exploiting a couple of guys on the field.
14:03They did that.
14:04They ran the ball.
14:05Okay.
14:06Like, but then also the defense can't stop a nosebleed.
14:10They can't have a nosebleed.
14:11But then even like, even like, even to his bomb, the Tyreek was the most uninspiring bomb of all time.
14:17It was like, it hung, it hung up there, like, like just lingered.
14:21And then thank God Tyreek came down with it.
14:23And then the one that he missed him wide ass open.
14:26And Tyreek's like, come on, bro.
14:28Like, like that, that wasn't missing two years ago.
14:33Right.
14:33And he's done that now twice.
14:36He's sailed it on him.
14:37And that's, and that's, that's annoying, man.
14:39But it's okay.
14:40Because don't forget, Leroy.
14:41Don't forget this.
14:42Don't.
14:43To win games, you have to win the game, not lose the game.
14:49Yep.
14:51Like, someone said, Leroy's just waiting until week four.
14:55Like, listen, I may be waiting to, to, to, I'll be, maybe waiting for week four.
15:02But I went outside and collected some firewood.
15:07So, so, so it, it's not like a situation where I'm sitting and I got a heater inside.
15:14I'm like, we'd be all right.
15:15I just flip a switch.
15:16Right.
15:17This is a situation where I got to do it manually.
15:19So, I'm collecting some firewood.
15:22I got the little, the long matches.
15:24Right.
15:24Like, this is like, it's building and they earned it.
15:28Like, I can't, as much as I want to sympathize with the situation.
15:35Right.
15:36And as much as I've been in this situation and understand, you know, patience.
15:42Like, I wish the Browns had been more patient with Bill Belichick.
15:45Right.
15:46I lived through that.
15:47Right.
15:47We knew we were good.
15:49We just were in a crappy situation with the team moving.
15:53We knew all this.
15:54But they still, because Bill Belichick was, well, you know, Bill Belichick.
15:59Right.
16:00It's one of those things that Bill Belichick's annoying unless he's winning.
16:05Right.
16:07But.
16:07I've always found him annoying even when he was winning.
16:10I, I, I get where everybody's coming from.
16:15I come from a little bit of a different place, but I still got to be honest about the situation.
16:20That's all I'm saying.
16:21Like, I still have to be honest about what is happening and what this team is going through
16:28and how this team is.
16:31And so while I'm being patient, I'm not being stupid.
16:35I'm going to get me some firewood because I don't want to be cold.
16:38Right.
16:38And that's.
16:40In our mouth continues.
16:43Don't worry.
16:44You'll be able to have a nice fat steak and bye week or somewhere around that.
16:49So, uh, like, I'm just, I think I'm frustrated even watching the game, like, just to see.
16:55You're frustrated.
16:56To see that game get away.
16:59Like, and then you sit and stare at the TV and go, how?
17:03Right.
17:04To things that just don't happen in football all that often.
