00:00The following commercial originally aired in the fall of 1969.
00:05Pay close attention, as there will be a test.
00:10So from the bottom of the line to the top, they all could be Dodge material.
00:30You belong in Dodge. You belong in Dodge. Now the seventies have begun. Time to tell it to everyone.
00:43You belong in the dashing dog. It's the one thing to know. When you're ready to go. When you're ready to go.
00:54You belong in Dodge. You belong in a Dodge. You belong in a Dodge.
01:18Oh, give me a home. Where the birds follow wrong. Where the deer and the antelope play.
01:33If you didn't have Mark Orman, you'd have to invent him.
01:41How did I get here?
01:43And the skies are not cloudy all day.
01:49I have no idea why my dad is crazy.
01:57It's not easy being the number one painter.
02:01Mark hates everybody. He always has.
02:05He always has.
02:07Where the deer and the antelope play.
02:11The sky is a raging word.
02:15And the skies are not cloudy all day.
02:22And the skies are not cloudy all day.
02:29They're coming to get you, Barbara.
02:32Okay.
02:35Are we ready?
02:39I'm ready.
02:40Okay.
02:41Let's do this.
02:42So what we're going to do first is we're going to roll the rear springs down.
02:47So we can position the shock mounts in the body here.
02:51Okay.
02:52Spring purchase to be correct.
02:54Okay.
02:55So if you want to roll your side.
02:56Can we go a little closer?
02:57Yep.
02:58Perfect.
02:59Come through there.
03:00Yep.
03:01The nuts are on the hoist there.
03:02Okay.
03:03You want to start those?
03:04Go ahead and start them.
03:05Yep.
03:06So for those of you who are either new to the show or long time viewers.
03:10This 69 Roadrunner came to us as a 383 car.
03:14A 383 automatic.
03:16The owner of the car now inherited it from his friend who passed away.
03:20His name is Scott Draper.
03:22Scott sent the car out here because he wanted it done right.
03:25Number one.
03:26And number two is he wanted it converted over to look like an A12 car, which is going to
03:30be your 446 barrel in this particular case.
03:33He didn't care so much about it being a four speed or the Dana rear end, but he is going
03:37to want the lift off hood for it.
03:39We had Scott out on the show a few years ago and he told the story and it's really,
03:45it's a very endearing story.
03:47And this is kind of part of the fabric of graveyard cars.
03:51My name is Scott Draper and I'm out here today at Mark's shop talking about my best friend
03:57in high school, 69 Roadrunner.
03:59He unfortunately passed away four years ago and this was his car since high school.
04:06And a vision of his was someday to get it restored to the degree that he wanted it to
04:12be.
04:13And he was a perfectionist.
04:14That's why I sought out this shop to make his dream come true.
04:20Yes, this car was an original 383 four speed car.
04:25I can't recall exactly how long that motor lasted.
04:28Steve did a lot of street racing back in the day.
04:30His vision was to make it a 440 six pack A12 car, tribute car, and pretty much had it
04:39assembled to that degree.
04:41It was a running car when I brought it out here, but it needed a lot of just perfectionism.
04:47When I was looking for a place to entrust the car with, I reached out to Mark and kind of gave him my story.
04:54He said, we'd love to take the car on.
04:56I understand it's a long process and there's a lot of things that have to be done.
05:01As you can see right now, it's in the disassembly stage and excited to be out here today from Iowa to check on it and talk to Mark about the scheduling of it moving forward.
05:13Now you see why this car has a lot of history to it, but there's more to it than that.
05:19Today, as we work on this car, I will reveal the crime of the century that was committed as a result of this car being here and why Alyssa is having to work with Doug today under the given circumstances.
05:35So, stay tuned.
05:39Pretty easy.
05:41How's yours going on?
05:42Very good.
05:43I don't know if that's a good sign or a bad sign of what's to come.
05:47Are you ready?
05:48Yeah.
05:49Grab mine.
05:50I don't know why my dad's so insistent on me working with Doug.
05:59Don't get me wrong.
06:00I love working with Doug.
06:01I just got a bunch of parts I need to put away and he's been hounding me to get that done.
06:05It's weird to me because it's just a 69 Roadrunner that originally was a 383 and we're putting a 440 in.
06:11I don't understand why I absolutely need to do this with Doug.
06:14However, I mean, knowing my dad, he's up to some evil plan.
06:17It's either that or maybe I'll learn something.
06:20Look at that.
06:22Beautiful.
06:23Pretty nice, huh?
06:26Right there?
06:28Yeah, I think that's good.
06:29Yep.
06:30Okay.
06:33Did I hear you say that my dad's gonna come help with the engine?
06:37I guess.
06:38Why?
06:39Is there nobody else?
06:40Well, yeah.
06:41We don't need him.
06:42He's a pain in the what?
06:44So there's no one else that could come in?
06:46Sure there is.
06:47He just wants to give us a hard time, that's all.
06:49Oh my gosh.
06:50Right?
06:51So at least he's gonna be running the forklift.
06:54Right.
06:55It'd be worse if he was actually here with us, I think.
06:57Well, at least if he's on the forklift, he's kinda out of our hair a little bit, right?
07:01Yeah.
07:02I am with Alyssa on this one.
07:03I believe Mark is up to something.
07:05Why?
07:06Mark is always up to something.
07:09What are you doing, kangaroo?
07:11Oh no.
07:12There's a kangaroo chasing me.
07:18For one, I don't need any help installing this drivetrain.
07:22I've installed dozens of them by myself.
07:24And two, when Mark is volunteering to drive the forklift, that just means he's insisting.
07:30And three, again, anybody can drive the forklift.
07:34Why is he volunteering?
07:35I guess he can be kinda helpful sometimes when he's out of our hair.
07:40Yeah.
07:41As long as you don't need to be positive reinforcement, you should be good.
07:44Okay.
07:45Okay.
07:46So, where's the kids at today, Alyssa?
07:58The girls are at school, and then my son's with my mom.
08:03Oh, nice.
08:04It's not ratcheting?
08:05Why is it not ratcheting?
08:06Does she enjoy having him over?
08:07She comes over to my house to watch him.
08:09Uh-huh.
08:10But yeah.
08:11How are your grandkids?
08:12They're doing good.
08:13All eight of them.
08:14Geez.
08:15It's so weird talking about my kids, because I have four now.
08:19And when we first started the show, I had just given birth to Emma.
08:22And that was almost 15 years ago.
08:25I don't know.
08:26Do you have some wipers or some shit?
08:28Yeah, I think my dad's a pretty good grandpa.
08:30I mean, he doesn't call her names yet.
08:33Waits until like, I don't know, four or five.
08:35He's just gonna actually comprehend what he's calling her.
08:38But right now, he just baby talks to her.
08:39He's really cute, and he's kinda scared to hold her still, but he talks to her and watches
08:44her from a distance.
08:47Are you getting hungry?
08:49Uh-huh.
08:50Oh, I like your hands.
08:51I mean, I don't know if you guys recall, but back in the day, when Emma used to come
08:55to the shop with me, and my mom would help watch her, my dad actually woke her up from
08:58a nap, so he could go show her the roadrunner bird on a roadrunner.
09:02And then I couldn't get her back to sleep.
09:04I'm on the phone, and I turn around.
09:06There's my dad leaving with Emma and all of her blankets after it took me two hours to
09:11get her to go to sleep.
09:12Hey, you want to see the roadrunner?
09:15Want to see the pretty roadrunner bird?
09:19Look.
09:20Didn't ask me anything.
09:21Rule number one is not to wake a sleeping baby, so...
09:25Meep, meep.
09:29How tight do you want these right now?
09:30That's good enough.
09:31Okay.
09:32So now we can raise the car up and attach the shocks.
09:35Okay, this is the tricky part, right?
09:37We're halfway there.
09:46So the reason we use the pogo is because we're going to attach one side at a time.
09:53Okay.
09:54Because if we lift the center, the car is just going to tip forward.
09:58Oh!
09:59Okay.
10:00So we only do one side at a time.
10:01So sketchy.
10:02Yeah, it is.
10:03These car bodies are pretty light without the drivetrain in them.
10:06Oh my gosh.
10:07And I'm standing right under it?
10:08Okay.
10:09What we do is...
10:11Okay.
10:13The shock is extending.
10:14Okay.
10:16So we'll take the nut and one washer off here.
10:20The other one stays on.
10:21Okay.
10:22So if you could raise that up just a little bit more, Alyssa.
10:27A little more?
10:28Perfect.
10:29There we go.
10:30Perfect.
10:31Right there.
10:32Put the washer.
10:35Perfect.
10:37Tension.
10:40Just like that.
10:41Perfect.
10:42So when we're installing the rear end, after we have the rear end bolted into place,
10:46we install the shocks one at a time.
10:48And the reason we do that is because the Hemi leaf springs have a lot of leaf springs.
10:54They're really stiff.
10:56And if we were to push this up in the middle, it would push the car right off the hoist.
11:01So we do one side at a time.
11:03We raise it up, attach the shock, lower it down.
11:06Move the pogo to the other side, raise it up, attach the shock, take the pogo off.
11:11Then it's all bolted in place.
11:13So if this was a small block car with lighter rear springs, we probably could lift it up right in the center, attach both shocks at the same time, and we'd be done.
11:24But not with the Hemi suspension, I promise you guys.
11:27See how common it is, just me and you working together?
11:31Watch how quickly that's going to change when my dad enters the picture.
11:33Right.
11:34It's going to be just chaos for no reason.
11:37It's time as it'll go?
11:51That's good.
11:52Right there.
11:53I don't know why I had to give it one more.
11:55Yeah.
11:57You need your own tools at home, don't you?
11:59I do.
12:00Okay.
12:01Okay.
12:02Is that it?
12:03That's it.
12:04Pretty straightforward.
12:05The rear end's in.
12:06Great.
12:07So then what?
12:08We have to go grab my dad?
12:09I guess so.
12:10I guess we have to do that.
12:11Okay.
12:12Don't say I didn't warn you.
12:13We could have grabbed Brian.
12:14We could have grabbed Will.
12:15Is he still here?
12:16Like, really?
12:17My dad?
12:18So I guess I'll go get your dad.
12:19Okay.
12:20It couldn't get worse.
12:25Coming up, Tony D'Agostino returns to Graveyard Cars to give us some of his hard-earned Mopar knowledge.
12:34So let's get into some of the finer details.
12:36Meanwhile, Mark enters the picture to torture, to help with a drivetrain install.
12:43But will Mark's family feuding end up compromising this delicate installation?
12:49Clear for takeoff.
12:50No, I don't want to talk like that.
12:51Find out when Graveyard Cars returns.
13:01I've been selling parts since 1979.
13:04And while you can look up some information about them online, you're not going to find everything.
13:08That's why I'm here.
13:09I'm Tony D'Agostino from Tony's Mopar Parts in Harrington, Delaware.
13:13Welcome to Tony's Tech Tips.
13:27We've got a number of markers here we're going to be going over.
13:30The information on these rivets, the letters here, and what these brackets are there for.
13:35So let's get into some of the finer details.
13:37Each rivet has three digits on it.
13:39The outer rivet, the first number is what we care about.
13:42That's a nine.
13:43That represents the year this was made, 1969.
13:46The other two digits aren't really important to us.
13:48They have to do with the internal plant information as far as the line it was on, the shift it was on.
13:53That's nothing that's going to concern us.
13:55This is important.
13:57This tells you the day of the year it was made.
14:00And in this case, it's 248.
14:03So the 248th day of 1969 is the day that this lower control arm was made and assembled.
14:10These numbers are important because you need to make sure that your control arm was made prior to your car's scheduled production date.
14:18Let's look at another control arm.
14:20The lower rivet tells you the day of the year that it was made.
14:24In this case, it says 073.
14:27And the outer rivet, the first digit is a nine.
14:30That's all we care about.
14:31This lower control arm was made on the 73rd day of 1969.
14:35And those dates need to be prior to your car's scheduled production date to be correct for it.
14:40Let's take a look at one more date code just to make sure you know it really well.
14:45Let's look at the outer rivet first.
14:47The first number is a four.
14:49So this is a 1974 production control arm, which is pretty late for us.
14:53And the day of the year it was made is 010.
14:58So the 10th day of 1974, this lower control arm was assembled.
15:03You would have to have a 1974 model car with this control arm to be right for it.
15:08And in this case, it's for an A-body with a front sway bar.
15:12How do we know all that?
15:14Stay tuned.
15:15And after the break, I'll show you how.
15:29In the original commercial we aired at the top of the show,
15:32which of the models featured the M46 simulated quarter panel air scoops?
15:37Was it A, Super B, B, Coronet RT, C, Dart Swinger, D, Dodge Charger, or E, none of the above?
15:49Stay tuned and find out after the break.
15:54Okay, folks, how'd you do?
15:59Which of the 1970 Dodge model cars featured in the opening vintage commercial had simulated air scoops on the quarters?
16:08If you guessed Super B, you are wrong.
16:12While the Super B did offer M46 options on the 1969 models, it was not an option or standard equipment in 1970.
16:22The Charger and Dart also did not offer a simulated scoop on the quarter panels.
16:27Therefore, the answer is Coronet RT.
16:30If you ever wondered why you don't see 1970 Coronet RTs without these scoops,
16:36it's because it was standard equipment.
16:39This Graveyard Cars trivia is brought to you by Tony's Mopar Parts.
16:45Still open despite what Mark said on national television.
16:48Okay, everybody, green light go here.
16:58Before I fire up the machine, I just want to check and make sure microphones are all working.
17:02Doug, have you got a copy on this, sir?
17:04Yeah.
17:05Yes.
17:06Your name is Doug?
17:07And here we go.
17:08Right on cue.
17:09Time to torture us with the new headsets.
17:19Hi, Mark.
17:20I have a copy of that.
17:21Okay, so the headsets.
17:22I've been using these headsets now for a few seasons in our driving footage.
17:26It's a safety precaution.
17:27They look a little silly in it, but it's a safety precaution.
17:30This allows me to tell those...
17:33No Mark, gentlemen and lady, not to do what they did last year.
17:37Do you remember what happened last year?
17:39They're going to hit that camera.
17:40They're going to hit that camera.
17:41What the...
17:42In this particular case, it is payback for what I alluded to earlier,
17:48the crime of the century.
17:50This 69 Roadrunner was sent to me for restoration, like I mentioned earlier.
17:55As a large part of Scott's down payment that was due,
18:01he handed me the keys, the title, to a 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT
18:08with 600 original miles on it.
18:11That car was stolen from me by my own flesh and blood.
18:14She conspired with will to take it out and to joyride it.
18:17She knew how I felt about it.
18:19It is the kind of a crime that doesn't just go away.
18:22There is no suitable penance for that.
18:25Today will be a portion of the penance.
18:28And since we were working on that 69 Roadrunner,
18:31I thought what better way to begin chiseling away at the payback
18:36for little Miss Alyssa Rose.
18:38Car thief.
18:39Dawn in 60 seconds.
18:41All right, everybody.
18:42With that, I'm going to do a fire up of the forklift.
18:47And in three, two, one, ignition.
18:57Can everybody still hear me do a quick audio check?
19:00Dougie, can you still hear me?
19:01You got a copy?
19:02I can hear you.
19:03Great.
19:04Alyssa?
19:05Yep.
19:06Still hear you.
19:07This is great.
19:08Yeah, this is wonderful.
19:09Okay.
19:14I'm going to...
19:15Doug, where'd you go?
19:17I don't get the headset devices.
19:19This is so awkward.
19:21I mean, we can hear each other fine without these things.
19:24I am going to raise the engine and the transmission
19:27by means of this forklift up.
19:30Seems like...
19:31Sir, go ahead.
19:32No, seem like what, hon?
19:33Nothing.
19:34No, microphone down.
19:35This seems like this is a lot of nonsense.
19:38Like, this should be easier.
19:39So you just want me to ram this right through the firewall
19:42and just call it good for the day?
19:43I've done it a million times.
19:45Okay, look, this has gotten blown out of proportion
19:47for way too long.
19:48I did not steal a car.
19:49I borrowed it.
19:50I'm seriously so excited.
19:52Hey, don't wreck it.
19:54Smells new.
19:55In fact, this is Will's fault.
19:57I asked Will if I could drive it, and he said yes.
19:59Hey!
20:00Hey!
20:01It's just the guy I was looking for.
20:02Okay.
20:03What's your plan?
20:04I really want to take the Challenger for a drive.
20:08And my dad said no.
20:10So, I mean, it's easier to say sorry later on than to ask for permission,
20:15one of those type of things.
20:16Okay, you haven't even got the gate open.
20:18Okay, well, go.
20:19Come on.
20:20Hurry.
20:21Okay, he's right here.
20:22It's a hemi.
20:23He's right here?
20:24I know.
20:25Then, if I remember correctly, he opened the gate for me.
20:28He helped me out.
20:29Just go.
20:30I'll cover for-
20:31Will.
20:32What are you going to say?
20:33Then you ran to the store real quick because it's 100 degrees.
20:35You're thirsty.
20:36If he wants to get even with anybody, get even with Will.
20:38He's the devil.
20:39I'm going vertical.
20:40I'm going vertical.
20:41I'm going vertical.
20:42I'm going to stop when I believe it's-
20:46Okay, I'm going to stop when Dougie waves.
20:48Alyssa, what you got over there?
20:49Everything looking okay?
20:50I feel like that's way high.
20:51That's a little too high.
20:52That's a little high.
20:54That's why you're here.
20:55That's why you're wearing the headset.
20:56Okay?
20:57You have the perfect angle to see that.
20:58You're not an AT&T operator.
20:59I have tortured Will for years over this.
21:02How many times?
21:03I mean, look at the things I do to Will.
21:05Go back and count them up.
21:06Holy cow.
21:07I made him ride a minibike home in the rain.
21:10So I guess at the end of the day, I have to look at the bright side.
21:13It gets good gas mileage.
21:15If I crash, I'm not going to go far to hit the ground.
21:20But I'm Will Scott, the number one painter here at Brave Yard Cars.
21:23I have a reputation.
21:24I can't be going around town on a minibike.
21:26It looks ridiculous.
21:27Okay?
21:28That's some cool stuff, man.
21:30That's cool stuff.
21:32So I'm already all caught up with Will.
21:34He'll still have a few little zingers coming down the road.
21:36But this, this is about Alyssa.
21:39And you can't blame Will for something like that anyway.
21:41Can you?
21:42I mean, if Will told you to jump off of a bridge, would you jump off of a bridge?
21:45No, you'd use your common sense.
21:47It's, lives aren't at stake.
21:49This isn't an order like, like Colonel Jessup gave the order in, in a few good men.
21:54Did you order the Torred?
21:55I did the job you sent me to do.
21:57Did you order the Torred?
21:58You got s*** right I did!
22:00He says it's okay to take your dad's car.
22:01It's not okay to take your dad's car.
22:03That's what this is about.
22:05It's about revenge.
22:06Revenge is mine, saith the Lord.
22:09That's Romanians 1219.
22:12So, biblical.
22:14Mark likes to do this thing.
22:16He takes things out of context.
22:17He twists them and manipulates them.
22:19It could be a movie, it could be a book, whatever it is.
22:22He's really fond of doing it with the Bible.
22:24He likes to take scripture and takes the verse and just completely just manipulates it.
22:29Takes it out of context and then uses it to support whatever it is and tells me,
22:33oh, well, you know, it's divine.
22:34God said it.
22:35It's, you know, it's the Word of God.
22:36Physician, heal thyself.
22:38Right?
22:39I don't want to get all biblical on everybody, but, oh man.
22:44Luke 4 23.
22:46If you are passing judgment, I believe the Bible is very clear about that.
22:49Filipinos 2 7.
22:51Judge not, least ye be judged.
22:52There's a couple problems with that.
22:54Let there be light.
22:56Genesis chapter 1 verse 3.
22:59Biblical.
23:00So to borrow a branch from Mark's tree, even the devil can cite scripture for his purpose.
23:06And that's Shakespeare.
23:12After the break, tensions mount as Mark continues his unique brand of punishment.
23:18How would you do that?
23:19This is like interrogational torture.
23:21You break them down.
23:23But will his shenanigans backfire when they make problems for the production?
23:28We decided to cut this thing down a lot.
23:30I think you're still going to experience the torture that every one of us felt that day.
23:35Find out when Graveyard Cars returns.
23:38Okay, is everything going okay, Doug?
23:39Are you liking what you're seeing?
23:40Are you seeing what you're liking?
23:41It's looking all right.
23:42Alyssa?
23:43Yeah?
23:44I'm going to keep coming back towards the back.
23:45See how nice this works?
23:46How great this is.
23:47Right there.
23:48What did you say, Doug?
23:49I don't know.
23:50Wait, why won't you say something?
23:51I need words.
23:52So I understand if Mark's just trying to torture Alyssa for stealing his low mile challenger,
24:08his precious challenger, you know?
24:11You're part of the culture today that needs instant gratification.
24:14Do you watch that talk tick thing?
24:15Sorry, guys.
24:16But why do I have to be tortured for this?
24:19I didn't tell her to steal it.
24:20I didn't steal it myself.
24:22In fact, I've never stolen a car in my life.
24:25Tilt back.
24:26I'm going to tilt the vehicle.
24:28Tipping back.
24:29One degree, two degree, three degree, four degree, five degree, six degree.
24:32Good.
24:33Good at six degrees.
24:34Can I get confirmation on that?
24:38Doug, confirmation on six degrees?
24:40Oh, yeah.
24:41That's wonderful.
24:42Alyssa, confirmation.
24:43Yes, that looks good.
24:45Copy that.
24:46If you guys could say Roger or repeat the message back to me, it would be great.
24:49You want us to repeat the message back to you?
24:51Say yes.
24:52Six degrees, copy.
24:53Six degrees, copy.
24:54Okay.
24:55I'm going to go towards the back of the vehicle now, which is going to bring the engine into
24:59the cavity more.
25:00You don't need to do that.
25:02Okay.
25:03Yeah, you do.
25:04You need to go out.
25:05My biggest apologies to both of you.
25:07Recently, I bought a book and I began reading it.
25:12And as I navigated my way through it, there were quite a few points.
25:15The book, quite simply, grab that here for you.
25:23Surrounded by idiots.
25:32Different colors represent different types of idiots.
25:35The biggest takeaway I had was be on the offense, not on the defense.
25:41It's like football, right?
25:42The more time you are down there, the more points you're going to score.
25:45I've always been on the defensive here.
25:46Right in there on that, inside of that.
25:48No, no.
25:49Oh, thank God.
25:50White.
25:51Why have you gone crazy?
25:52I didn't mean with the yellow.
25:53I meant with the white.
25:54Was I supposed to know that?
25:55Oh, mama.
25:56Why are you painting without me?
25:58Without your...
25:59Because I try to avoid doing all that with you.
26:01So I just come...
26:02What defecation is that?
26:04No, because you always come out and interrupt me.
26:06Don't leave your wingman, man.
26:07Never leave your wingman.
26:08You want to come in at four?
26:09How long will it be now?
26:11I don't know.
26:12It's...
26:13We've been on the road for an hour.
26:14I don't know.
26:15How long did I say it was going to be?
26:16You repeated it three times.
26:17Three hours?
26:18Three hours.
26:19You probably have two hours left.
26:20But now...
26:21Now, I'm on the offensive, and that's what's going to get me around the curve.
26:24Just like I say, it's like any game you want to play, you need to be on offense to score points.
26:29If I had been on offense that day, she wouldn't have known where the keys to the car were.
26:35Now, read back to me, say, apology accepted, 10-4.
26:40Okay.
26:41Apology accepted, 10-4.
26:43Alicia?
26:44Copy.
26:45That'll work.
26:48The opening commercial included several Dodge model cars for 1970.
26:53Which of these cars featured concealed headlamps?
26:57Was it A. Superbee?
26:59B. Coronet RT?
27:02C. Dodge Charger?
27:04D. Dodge Challenger?
27:07Or E. None of the above?
27:09Stick around after the break and find out.
27:13Okay, folks, let's see how you did.
27:20Which of the cars in the opening commercial featured concealed headlamps?
27:24If you said Dodge Charger, you are correct.
27:28In fact, in 1970, the only Mopar muscle car you could get with hideaway or concealed headlamps was the Charger.
27:38Concealed headlamps, sales code L37, were standard equipment on all Dodge Chargers from 1966 all the way to 1970,
27:49and optional on the 71 and 72 models.
27:53This Mopar trivia is brought to you by Vans Auto, who works with Tony's Mopar Parts,
28:00who is still very much open for business.
28:03You're welcome, Tony.
28:12This reminds me of Top Gun.
28:13Remember the first one?
28:14He said brake right on three, two, one, brake right.
28:17I think this is what Jeffrey was talking about.
28:20And then they broke right, but they went into a flat spin, and that killed him.
28:23How is that looking, Doug, over there?
28:24Is it going to clear the engine compartment?
28:27Remember when Goose got his back broken by hitting that damn canopy?
28:32Well, folks, we have reached an all-new level of insanity for our fearless leader.
28:36And I had a feeling, I had a bad feeling, because the last time Mark had me sit down and work on his computer,
28:41in the search field, the first thing that popped up was interrogational torture techniques.
28:45That was not remotely what I was looking for.
28:47Okay, what are we doing now?
28:48Slowly going up?
28:49Yeah, we're going to go up.
28:50Okay, because I no longer can see.
28:52So this is instrument flying.
28:54People's lives are in your hands.
28:57I'm going up.
28:58This is like interrogational torture.
29:00You break them down.
29:01You watch those crime shows when somebody's committed a crime.
29:03They don't bring them in there and feed them pizza and soda pop.
29:06They give them a limited amount of water, a limited amount of food, limited bathroom breaks,
29:11and they pound them until they, quite frankly, in a lot of cases, they confess to something they didn't even do,
29:16just so they can get out of there.
29:18That is a successful technique.
29:20That is what this is.
29:26Murder, car theft, both felonies.
29:29I need a clear for takeoff from both of you.
29:31Clear for takeoff.
29:32Go ahead.
29:33Go up.
29:34Yes.
29:35Clear for takeoff.
29:36I don't want to talk like that.
29:37Clear for takeoff.
29:38Clear for takeoff.
29:39Taking off.
29:40T minus three seconds.
29:42Two.
29:43One.
29:45Going vertical.
29:47First rocket booster.
29:49Sea tactic.
29:50It's going at good.
29:51I think it's going to have to go back a little bit more.
29:55I'm going to stop there until I hear further directions.
29:59I cannot have to be clear on your side, Alyssa.
30:02Yeah.
30:03I'm just seeing that my holes aren't lining up, though.
30:05Which way does it need to go on your side?
30:07It needs to go back.
30:09Back?
30:10Yeah, see where this is.
30:12Waiting for further directions.
30:14Okay, I'm going to shift this to the right a little.
30:16Oh, gosh.
30:17Okay, I'm going to save you guys a lot of time here.
30:19And the reason is, well, one, the show is only an hour long.
30:22And two, you didn't do anything wrong.
30:24You didn't take a car without authorization.
30:25So you shouldn't be punished.
30:27We decided to cut this thing down a lot.
30:29Bare minimum, get you across the story.
30:32The core idea of this very boring drivetrain install.
30:37But even so, even cut down, I think you're still going to experience the pain,
30:42the torture that Doug, Alyssa and frankly, every one of us felt that day.
30:48I'm just holding, I'm in a holding pattern.
30:51Is that 10-4, everybody?
30:53Did you watch Top Gun recently or something?
30:55Is that why you're talking like this?
30:56I watch Top Gun every night.
30:58Before I go to sleep, I watch a few good men.
31:01The movie, not in real life.
31:07I'm going to borrow another page from Mark's book.
31:09Let's take a scripture verse out of context.
31:11Peter said that to the Lord a days is a thousand years.
31:15And anyone who's edited on this show feels Peter's pain.
31:19Shifting passenger side.
31:22One inch.
31:23Okay.
31:24I guess all we can do now is just raise it up and see.
31:27Yeah.
31:28I need affirmative action, please.
31:30Affirmative action.
31:31Vertical?
31:32Yep.
31:33Vertical, Doug?
31:34Yep.
31:35Copy that, everybody.
31:3610-4.
31:37Copy that, 10-4.
31:38Okay.
31:39My 10-20 is about to go vertical.
31:41Yeah.
31:42Brake left.
31:43Definitely breaking a lap.
31:46I'm an excellent pilot.
31:48Okay.
31:49Yeah.
31:50Mad Hatter was my handle when I was a kid.
31:52This one is pitched underneath the trigger.
31:53I go, breaker, breaker, it's Mad Hatter.
31:55There's a man stuck up there.
31:56So, I went on Monday night Long Island iced teas for a buck.
32:00Was he talking to you?
32:01I met up with that Starduster chick.
32:03Remember that girl you used to date with the forehead?
32:06Great.
32:07Big.
32:08I love hearing about this.
32:09Huge forehead.
32:10Yeah, there's a lot wrong with the forehead.
32:12When the red...
32:19Big old ugly Roebuck thing.
32:20Maybe that's why he didn't have very many girlfriends.
32:25Okay, Mark, we did it.
32:26Well, you guys are just the best of everything.
32:28So, at this point, I am going to lower the forklift down and back up out of the way and assess the situation.
32:37Now, are you guys okay with that?
32:39Yeah, just give me one more second.
32:41No, Alyssa, you can't take them off because then you can't hear.
32:44I'm not.
32:45Just adjusting.
32:47I missed so much.
32:48I was just getting ready to talk about something really important in here.
32:52Eeeeee!
32:53Is that loud almost?
32:54Yeah, that's loud.
32:55Sorry.
32:56Thanks for that.
32:59Why would you do that?
33:01And with that, you are welcome.
33:03Enjoy the rest of the show.
33:04Still to come, when Alyssa and Doug are finally rid of Mark.
33:11But I'm happy to help if you want me to put these back on again.
33:13I think we got it.
33:14They can now work on wrapping up the Roadrunner's drivetrain in peace.
33:18Makes our life a lot easier.
33:20But, before we see this bird descend on all four wheels, Tony D'Agostino gives you his tips on lower control arms and how to confidently acquire the correct ones.
33:31Let's identify these sway bar brackets when Graveyard Cars returns.
33:41You would have to have a 1974 model car for this control arm to be right for it.
33:46And in this case, it's for an A body with a front sway bar.
33:51How do we know all that?
33:52I'm going to show you.
33:53So, let's go back to our first lower control arm.
33:55Stamped into the front of our lower control arm are four letters.
33:59RW above LF.
34:02RW is for the Carnet and Belvedere body types, which is a B body.
34:06And we know that this fits all 1962 through 72 B body cars.
34:12Not to be confusing, but it also fits E body cars, all Kudos and Challengers.
34:16The reason why they didn't change the RW or add BJ to it is because it was an existing made part and they just stuck what they already had.
34:25The LF below that means it's for the left side of the car and this is the facing front side.
34:31Let's look at another lower control arm to see what letters are on this one.
34:35VL, LF.
34:37So, VL stands for the A body cars, which V is for Valiant and L is for Dart.
34:44And the LF means it's for the left side of the car and this is the front side of the lower control arm.
34:50Let's look at one more just to confirm what we've learned.
34:53It reads VL RF, which again, VL is for the A bodies.
34:59And the RF means this is the right side control arm and this is the part that faces forward.
35:03So now I bet you're wondering what are all these different brackets here for?
35:07These brackets were used if your car had a sway bar.
35:10This car obviously did not have a sway bar, so there's no bracket on it.
35:14But there is a variable on the sway bar bracket.
35:16You need to know the right type of bracket to use for the year of your car.
35:20So, let's identify these sway bar brackets and which cars they're for.
35:24This is what I'm going to call the early type.
35:26This style bracket was used on 66 to 69 B body cars.
35:29The same bracket was also used on 67 to 72 A body cars.
35:34So, if your car had a sway bar and fits in those years, you're going to need to get a control arm that has this style bracket on it.
35:41That's the outer part of the lower control arm.
35:43This type of sway bar bracket, which is located just off center from the lower control arm, was used on 1970 to 1972 B bodies, all E bodies, which is the Cudas and Challengers, and 73 to 6 A body cars with disc brakes.
35:58It's important to note the distance from the outer part of the lower control arm to where the sway bar bracket is mounted.
36:06The later type is mounted pretty far away from at a good 6 inches.
36:09And the early type is located at the very outer edge, maybe an inch or so in from the end of the control arm.
36:15So, if you have any of your Cuda or Challenger, this is the type of sway bar bracket you're going to be looking for, or if you have a 70 to 72 B body.
36:24This style bracket was used on the 66 to 69 B body cars, and also the early A body cars, the 67 to 72 cars.
36:32So, on with that information, now you know what you need for your car the next time you're out looking for one, whether it's at a swap meet or online or at a guy's garage.
36:41You don't have to rely on somebody else's information, now you can rely on your own knowledge.
36:56In the original ad at the top of the show, which car model was a two door post?
37:02Was it A. Charger? B. Super B? C. Coronet RT? D. Challenger? Or E. None of the above?
37:16Stick around and find out after the break.
37:19What do you think folks? Which of the cars from the ad was a two door post and not a hard top?
37:31If you guessed Charger, you are wrong.
37:35In fact, you couldn't get a Dodge Charger in a post model.
37:40The answer is none of the above.
37:43It's interesting why Dodge chose not to feature any post model cars in the ad.
37:49They certainly made a 1970 Super B in a post.
37:53Whatever the case, all the cars featured were hard tops.
37:58And by the way, hard top means that the quarter windows rolled down.
38:02This Mopar Trivia was brought to you by Auto Metal Direct.
38:09Which is still open and operating.
38:13Just like Tony's Mopar parts.
38:25Going down!
38:27Going down!
38:32Are we going to put the wheels on it today?
38:35How far are you going to back up?
38:37Until I break glass and hear... I don't know.
38:42What's the saying? Back up until you smell poo poo and hear glass break?
38:49Let's have a little gander poo at this little mother humper.
38:52So you guys probably don't need my help in installing the front, but I'm happy to help if you want me to put these back on again.
38:57No. I think we got it.
38:59Okay. Doug, you want me to help put the upper control arms in place?
39:03No. Okay.
39:05Thank you for your help.
39:07So finally, Mark has left the building. Left the building!
39:10Now maybe Alyssa and I can get this thing wrapped up, get the front suspension put together and get it on its wheels. Get it done.
39:17Okay.
39:19One more time.
39:21Marty has this little thing he likes to say. He says, Grease, Grease, Grease!
39:25I say it all the time now. Grease, Grease, Grease!
39:28Okay.
39:29Makes our life a lot easier.
39:31Okay.
39:37Line it up and I'll see if it's going to go in there.
39:41Once we installed the suspension in the car and my dad was gone, the next thing we did was install the torsion bars.
39:47You have to have the torsion bars installed in order to put the control arms together.
39:53It's going in!
39:55It's going?
39:56Yep.
39:57Excellent.
39:58Okay, so Chrysler made quite a few different torsion bars for these cars.
40:02They made lighter ones and they make heavier ones.
40:05On most of our performance cars, we use the 780, 781 Hemi torsion bars.
40:10So the 781 is the driver side torsion bar, the 780, the even number, is the passenger side torsion bar.
40:17These are the heavy duty torsion bars that you would get with the Hemi suspension.
40:21If this car were a slant six, it would use a smaller diameter torsion bar.
40:24But we're using the heavy duty because we've got a 440 in this car.
40:28Okay, so now we're going to raise up the lower control arm and line up our upper control arm.
40:37Connecting the upper and lower control arms is pretty simple.
40:41So you take the lower control arm and bring it up.
40:44You take the upper control arm and bring it down.
40:46Once the control arms are close enough where you can marry them, you put the ball joint into the spindle and then you put the nut on and you're done.
40:52Wait.
40:54Beautiful.
40:55I felt it grabbed.
40:56Okay.
40:57Beautiful.
40:58All right.
40:59Nice work.
41:00Okay.
41:01You're tight.
41:02All right.
41:03I'll get a wrench and I'll tighten it down.
41:04Once we were done with the passenger side, all we had left was the driver side.
41:07After we get that buttoned up, we're ready for wheels and tires.
41:09I'm really looking forward to seeing this car on the ground with the wheels on it.
41:13So we've got the engine, transmission, suspension hooked up.
41:20So now we're going to be able to lower the car down, put the wheels and tires on.
41:25Nice.
41:26We're wrapped up.
41:27We are.
41:28Okay.
41:29We're going to cut.
41:33Okay.
41:34I didn't know how they want to do that.
41:36That's fine.
41:37That was great.
41:38Okay.
41:46Regardless of my methods, you guys may not agree with all of them.
41:49Look at that car sitting there.
41:58Alyssa was able to work under extreme pressure.
42:03Duress.
42:04If I can use that word, can I use duress?
42:06And still came through and got the car done.
42:08It's on its wheels and tires.
42:09It's rolled out in the floor.
42:10We now have a car that'll move around on its own wheels.
42:16That means we can finish putting the car together.
42:18Give it back to Mr. Draper, who, by the way, thank you very much for being patient with us.
42:21And he will have his car back in a few months.
42:36That's Graveyard Cars.
42:38Be sure to go to GraveyardCars.com and check everything out that we do.
42:42Go over to our YouTube page and watch our shorts.
42:45I got some funny stuff.
42:46Not my underwear.
42:47Just, they're called short videos.
42:49I don't think anybody wants to see my underwear.
42:52Besides that, there's Scooby-Doo.
42:54Is that okay with you?
42:55You got a problem with Scooby-Doo underwear, camera person?
42:57No.
42:58Didn't think so.
43:27For real?
