02:10Who is our person of the week?
02:12From ABC News World Headquarters in New York, this is World News Tonight with David Muir.
02:23Good evening, and it's great to have you with us here on a Friday night.
02:26And we do begin tonight with the breaking news and the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University.
02:31Tonight, the suspect now under arrest, and authorities now say his family played a role in his surrender.
02:36Utah Governor Spencer Cox identifying the alleged shooter as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson,
02:42taken into custody after the governor says he confessed to a family member.
02:46The investigation picking up speed after the FBI released new images of the suspect last night.
02:51Authorities say his father recognizing his son dressed in dark clothes and wearing sunglasses.
02:56The governor says the father worked to convince his son to turn himself in.
03:00Authorities also releasing dramatic video that they say shows the suspect making his escape moments after the shooting,
03:05jumping from a rooftop to the ground, then running away.
03:09The governor saying Tyler Robinson left messages on the bullet casings described as anti-fascist messages.
03:15And tonight, the new timeline here, how authorities say this all unfolded when the suspect arrived on campus
03:20and allegedly changed and made his way to that building.
03:23ABC's chief national correspondent, Matt Guppin, leading us off tonight from Utah.
03:28Tonight, the man authorities say assassinated conservative activist Charlie Kirk with a single shot in front of a crowd of thousands,
03:35now behind bars.
03:37They say 22-year-old Tyler Robinson turned himself in at the urging of his own father,
03:42who recognized him from the widely circulated photos and videos.
03:45Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.
03:47We got him.
03:48Utah Governor Spencer Cox saying Robinson had confessed to a family member.
03:53A family member of Tyler Robinson reached out to a family friend
03:57who contacted the Washington County Sheriff's Office with information that Robinson had confessed to them
04:03or implied that he had committed the incident.
04:05The governor saying a family member said Robinson had recently become more political
04:10and had brought up Kirk's visit during a family dinner.
04:13Robinson mentioned Charlie Kirk was coming to UVU.
04:17They talked about why they didn't like him and the viewpoints that he had.
04:21The family member also stated Kirk was full of hate and spreading hate.
04:25And after painstakingly piecing together video, investigators say they've reconstructed Robinson's path to the scene of the crime.
04:32They say he arrived on campus in his Dodge Challenger at 8.29 a.m.
04:36and at some point changed into the distinctive outfit seen in those photos.
04:41Black cap, sunglasses, and that black shirt emblazoned with an eagle and an American flag.
04:46TMZ obtaining this video of a man who matches that description, and he appears to be limping.
04:51And police say before the shooting, Robinson appears to walk with a stiff right leg,
04:56and that his ability to bend his right leg appears to be restricted.
05:00Law enforcement sources now tell us investigators believe Robinson was hiding his long gun under his clothing,
05:07which explains why he was walking that way.
05:09Police say more than three hours later at 11.50 a.m.,
05:12cameras caught Robinson making his way up the building stairwell into the roof,
05:17where he crouched down and waited.
05:18Watch it, Kirk rev up the crowd.
05:23And at 12.22, they say Robinson started to run, not limping anymore,
05:28laying down in a sniper position about 175 yards away from the stage.
05:32And just one minute later, as Kirk was answering a question about gun violence,
05:37police say the suspect fired.
05:39Do you know how many mass shooters there have been in America over the last 10 years?
05:43Counting or not counting gang violence.
05:45Great.
05:45And as the crowd ducked in panic, cameras capturing this image of a shadowy figure on the roof.
05:54And police say this video shows Robinson scampering across the roof and dropping down to the ground and then jogging off.
06:01Did it seem like he had a firearm when he came down?
06:03Yeah, I believe he did.
06:05The video is very grainy.
06:06It's from a distance.
06:08But yes, we absolutely believe he had the firearm when he jumped off that building.
06:12And authorities say that that suspect crossed the street from campus just over there,
06:16walked up this drive into this wooded area.
06:19And somewhere around here, he stashed that rifle, wrapped in a dark towel, those cartridges still inside.
06:26The governor today saying there were messages inscribed on the bullet casings.
06:31I will leave that up to you to interpret what those engravings mean.
06:34I think the clearest one that says catch fascist, there's not, and by the way, that's like catch like a ball, catch this.
06:44That's, I think that speaks for itself.
06:47Authorities also alleging Robinson shared details about the shooting and messages to his roommate.
06:52The messages also refer to engraving bullets and a mention of a scope and the rifle being unique.
07:00And tonight, for the first time, we're hearing from Charlie Kirk's widow, Erica.
07:05Charlie loved his children.
07:08And he loved me with all of his heart.
07:13And I knew that.
07:15Every day I knew that.
07:16He made sure I knew that every day.
07:19Every day he would ask me, how can I serve you better?
07:22How can I be a better husband?
07:24How can I be a better father?
07:25Every day.
07:27Every day.
07:28Such a good man.
07:30And David, tonight, Tyler Robinson is an inmate at the Utah County Jail.
07:34He has not yet been formally charged.
07:35We expect those charges to be filed on Tuesday, likely followed by federal charges.
07:40And officials tell us that if he is convicted, he will face the death penalty.
07:46David.
07:46Matt Kuppin leading us off here again tonight.
07:48Matt, thank you.
07:48And tonight, authorities now, of course, looking into Tyler Robinson's background.
07:51His social media posts, his experience with guns.
07:54He was from a family of hunters.
07:55And police tonight saying a family member describing Tyler Robinson's alleged recent frustration with politics and hate.
08:03He's now expected to face those state charges.
08:05And here's Pierre Thomas.
08:06Tonight, a portrait emerging of Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old Utah man who authorities say assassinated Charlie Kirk.
08:15Social media tells part of his story.
08:17His family included hunters, people very familiar and comfortable with guns.
08:22He comes from a middle-class Mormon family.
08:25Robin's mother is a social worker.
08:27His father recently ran a kitchen countertop business.
08:30Though he did not have military experience, sources tell ABC News they believe Robinson was proficient with firearms and had enough skill to make a long-distance shot from an elevated perch.
08:42And today, the governor alleged that the suspect wanted to literally use bullets to send messages.
08:47Here's what the governor said was on the shell casings recovered from that single-boat action rifle believed to have been used in the attack.
08:55Inscriptions on the three unfired casings read, hey, fascist, exclamation point, catch, exclamation point.
09:02Another shell casing referencing an Italian anti-fascist folk song.
09:07The engravings appear to point to a man consumed by Internet culture.
09:10Robinson also used the encrypted messaging app, Discord, to communicate, a popular messaging tool used by young people that has been repeatedly tied to young men engaged in horrific acts of violence.
09:23Discord releasing a statement today acknowledging Robinson did have an account with their platform since deleted, but say they found no evidence the suspect planned this incident or promoted violence on their platform.
09:34Christian Schmearman was the custodian at Robinson's grade school and has known the Robinson family for over 16 years, describing the suspect as smart.
09:44He's part of our neighborhood, you know. I saw him grow up. I would have never thought that.
09:49Keaton Brooksby has known Robinson since middle school.
09:52I knew his family had firearms. I knew he shot all the time. There was pictures all over his family's Facebook of him with firearms.
10:01Everyone in St. George has them. It's a very conservative town.
10:07David, as you heard, authorities say Tyler Robinson, described by family and friends as smart, came home more concerned about politics than he told a family member Charlie Kirk was coming to campus.
10:18That family member describing Kirk as full of hate. David.
10:22Pierre Thomas on the unfolding investigation tonight, Pierre. Thanks to you as well.
10:26And now to that remarkable moment today amid all of these developments, the stark warning from the Republican governor of Utah for all Americans.
10:32The governor calling social media, quote, a cancer, asking Americans to log off, touch grass, hug a family member, do good in your community, denouncing the violence against Republicans and Democrats.
10:44Here's Jonathan Karl on what he said.
10:46Utah Governor Spencer Cox said today the killing of Charlie Kirk made him angry, as angry as he has ever been.
10:54It is an attack on all of us. It is an attack on the American experiment. It is an attack on our ideals.
11:05But despite the anger, Governor Cox, a Republican, is pleading for calm, for dialing down the rage and the division, pointing out that political violence has targeted Democrats as well as Republicans, saying the shooting in his state can be a turning point for America.
11:21We can return violence with violence. We can return hate with hate. And that's the problem with with political violence is it metastasizes because we can always point the finger at the other side.
11:34And at some point we have to find an off ramp or it's going to get much, much worse.
11:41The governor's words stood in stark contrast to those, including the president, who have blamed the attack on the, quote, radical left.
11:48I think we need more moral clarity right now. I hear all the time that words are violence. Words are not violence. Violence is violence.
11:59And there is one person responsible for what happened here. And that person is now in custody.
12:07And Cox took aim at all those hateful messages circulating on social media.
12:11Social media is a cancer on our society right now. And I would encourage again, I would encourage people to log off, turn off, touch grass, hug a family member, go out and do good in your community.
12:23Governor Cox called the killing of Charlie Kirk a watershed moment, marking a new chapter in American history.
12:30The question is whether it is the end of a dark chapter or the beginning of an even darker one.
12:36David. But you're right to point it out, John, because a lot of people were talking about Governor Cox's words today.
12:41John Carl, our thanks to you. We turn now to the other news tonight and across the U.S.
12:45to the multiple hoaxes playing out in this country in the last 24 hours.
12:48Police responding to fake threats on several American campuses, calls meant to scare.
12:53But tonight there's been a horrible turn. The false threat leading to a real shooting at the U.S. Naval Academy in Maryland.
12:59Here's Aaron Katursky.
13:00With the country already on edge, fear and frustration as an epidemic of hoax security threats overwhelms American college campuses.
13:09And tonight, proof of how dangerous these can be.
13:12A fake threat leading to a real shooting at the U.S. Naval Academy.
13:16I'm requesting units for an EMS task force on the U.S. Naval Academy for an active shooter event.
13:22That turned out to be bogus on Thursday, but the Academy was locked down over fears the purported shooter was posing as police.
13:28In the chaos, a midshipman shot on the shoulder after confronting a security officer he thought was a gunman.
13:35It came at the end of a day that saw more than a dozen hoaxes.
13:38Many of them, police say, racially motivated, targeting historically black colleges and universities, along with other schools, including UMass Boston.
13:45Cops came up the staircase and they kicked the door down.
13:49They had all tactical gear on and rifles and they were like, you got to get out.
13:52There might be an active shooter.
13:53Heavily armed officers swarming the campus and seen sweeping dormitories room by room, guns drawn.
13:59One student exiting with her hands up.
14:01Authorities later determining there was no threat.
14:04That midshipman is out of the hospital tonight, David.
14:07And the reality is law enforcement authorities are really struggling to contain this crisis of swatting in the country.
14:14And recognizing the climate does not help.
14:17David.
14:18No question about that, Aaron.
14:19We move on now to the deadly ICE confrontation in a Chicago suburb.
14:23ICE officers attempting to arrest a suspect during a traffic stop.
14:26DHS tonight saying one of the officers was struck by the driver and dragged as he tried to flee the scene.
14:31Authorities say that officer, fearing for his life, shot and killed the suspect.
14:34That officer in the hospital tonight recovering from serious injuries.
14:38Now to those Russian drones over Poland's airspace.
14:41Tonight, President Trump suggesting that the drones over Poland could have been a mistake by Russia.
14:45But tonight, Poland saying it was no mistake in what NATO is now doing to send a message to Vladimir Putin.
14:51Here's Martha Raddatz.
14:53Overnight, President Trump suggesting Russia's drone incursion into Poland could have been a mistake.
15:00But Poland insists it was deliberate.
15:03And tonight, NATO ramping up air defenses from the Mediterranean to the Baltics.
15:10This comes just days after more than a dozen Russian attack drones violated Poland's airspace.
15:17NATO scrambling fighter jets to shoot them down.
15:20What happened on Wednesday was not an isolated incident.
15:25Russia's recklessness in the air along our eastern flank is increasing in frequency.
15:31France, the U.K., and Germany, among several nations, now sending additional assets to better defend NATO's eastern flank.
15:39And David, the American general in charge of NATO forces says this situation transcends the borders of one nation.
15:46What affects one ally, he said, affects us all.
15:50David.
15:50Martha Raddatz back with us here tonight.
15:52Martha, thank you.
15:52When we come back here, disturbing new details coming in tonight.
15:55There's been a beheading at a motel in Dallas and what authorities have now revealed about it.
15:59Also, look at this, the alarming moments aboard a JetBlue flight preparing for takeoff for Boston.
16:04The plane pushing back from the gate.
16:06The wings smashing through the windows of the airport right into a restaurant.
16:10And take a look at this tonight, sweeping across the landscape where these images were captured in a moment here.
16:16Tonight, we're learning more about that horrific scene in Dallas.
16:19A beheading at a motel.
16:20Tonight, a motel worker facing murder charges.
16:22Authorities say going after his manager.
16:24Police say the suspect became enraged during a conversation over a broken washing machine.
16:29Detectives say the suspect confronted the manager with a machete, killing her.
16:33According to police, the suspect is a Cuban immigrant with a violent criminal past.
16:38When we come back on this Friday night, that JetBlue plane pulling back from the gate.
16:41The wings smashing through the window of the airport where people were eating at a restaurant.
16:46And later here tonight, the toddler.
16:48I promise he will make your night.
16:49Who is our person of the week?
16:50To the index tonight, the JetBlue plane and its wings smashing into the airport at Richmond International Airport in Virginia.
16:58Smashing the windows of a restaurant.
16:59JetBlue flight 1282 pushing back from the gate.
17:02The wing hit three windows.
17:03That plane supposed to take off for Boston.
17:05No one was hurt.
17:06And the dust devil tonight.
17:07David Wilson spotted the dust devil kicking up corn stalks, dirt, debris in Brooksville, Mississippi.
17:12He caught the moment on camera with all of that corn, dubbing it tonight a cornado.
17:16We see what he did there.
17:18When we come back here tonight, the father and his toddler.
17:20And what they do every morning.
17:21It's now been seen by millions.
17:23Even the Super Bowl champs love this kid.
17:25And you will too in a moment here.
17:27Stay tuned.
17:29Finally tonight here, the toddler nicknamed Coop on a Stoop.
17:32Our person of the week.
17:34Tonight, the father and son hoping it's the simple things that will unite communities.
17:38It, as for them, dad and his toddler, Cooper.
17:41Whoa.
17:42Whoa.
17:44Every morning in Costa Mesa, California, father and son, Chris and Cooper O'Brien, sharing the same very simple routine.
17:52That dad bringing one-and-a-half-year-old Cooper outside to sit on their curb to simply watch the cars go by together, hoping to start their day with a smile.
18:01It's Sunday.
18:03The stoop is dry.
18:04The dog is watching.
18:06Father and son and mom Haley started sending those daily videos to family and friends and then sharing them online with their community.
18:13Well, tonight, it's a community of millions.
18:16Whoa.
18:17Crash landing.
18:17People from all over the country now starting their own days, smiling right along with that father and son.
18:23Some have now nicknamed the boy Coop on a Stoop, sitting on that curb.
18:27Checking the stoop.
18:29Each day, waiting for the newest video.
18:31Will Coop sit on the stoop?
18:32Will he stand?
18:33A sort of good luck charm as they start their own days.
18:36Oh, fake out.
18:39So many now watching to see what Coop will do.
18:41Is Coop going to sit on the stoop?
18:44For sure.
18:45The New England Patriots watching from the locker room.
18:48I think he's going to sit on the stoop.
18:50It's going to be a great day.
18:51The Philadelphia Eagles sitting just like Coop.
18:54Checking the stoop.
18:56Eagles cornerback and punt returner Cooper Dejean posting this video, Big Coop on the Stoop.
19:02The Chicago Cubs mascot, Clark, getting in on it too at Wrigley Field.
19:08Calling it Clark in the Park and right here tonight.
19:11How's it going, David?
19:12Mom, dad, and of course, Coop on the stoop.
19:16It's meant a lot to us, just seeing the amount of joy and happiness he's spreading to people.
19:21Tonight, their hope to bring people together, showing even the simplest things can unite.
19:26Find those moments in your daily life with those people that you love and those that are around you and really cherish them.
19:31And so we choose Coop and his parents and their simple message tonight.
19:39We sure needed that.
19:40I'm David Muir.
