00:00The government of Mexico announced tariff measures for countries that do not have free trade agreements with the nation.
00:14Argentine President Javier Milley has vetoed a law approved by Congress to distribute funding to the nation's provinces amid rising tensions with provincial leaders.
00:25And Russia and Belarus Armed Forces have begun the ZAPAT 2025 strategic exercises with the aim of protecting the interest and security of both nations.
00:44Hello and welcome to From the South. My name is Belen de los Santos. I'm from the Tesoro Studios in Havana, Cuba. We begin with the news.
00:55And we now begin with the information.
01:04The government of Mexico announced tariff measures for countries that do not have free trade agreements with the nation.
01:11On Friday, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the government would impose tariff measures aimed at strengthening domestic production and trade.
01:19Among the measures is the possible application of a 50% tariff on imports of automobiles from China.
01:26The president stated that these do not constitute an act of coercion or discrimination against the Asian giant,
01:33but that will be applied to all countries without free trade agreements with Mexico.
01:38Meanwhile, Sheinbaum indicated that she will be meeting with the Chinese authorities to take certain measures to reduce trade risks.
01:49And in other news, the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of our America, our TCP, denounced from Mexico the U.S. violation of the Treaty of Tlatelolco.
02:03The blog's Executive Secretary, Randar Peña, expressed that the recent military deployment of the United States in the Caribbean
02:10constitutes a violation of this treaty, which establishes the prohibition of the transfer and use of military and nuclear weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean.
02:21The regional group made public its concern about the flagrant violation of international law promoted by Donald Trump's government
02:28and warned that these interfering actions constitute a threat to peace in the region and therefore requires concrete measures.
02:42In a report from the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC, said on Friday that Venezuela's oil production increased by 1.29% in August.
02:53According to the document, the increase represents about 14,000 barrels more per day in comparison to July,
03:02where the total production reached 1,084,000 barrels.
03:07On the other hand, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro praised the recovery of the nation's oil production
03:12and reiterated that the South American country has the largest certified reserves in the world.
03:17In 2017, Venezuelan oil production reached its lowest levels in history, about 100,000 barrels per day,
03:25following sanctions against the Venezuelan state-owned company PDVSA.
03:35And former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced yesterday to 27 years and three months for leading a failed military coup.
03:44However, he's not going to jail just yet.
03:48Our correspondent, Brian Meyer, explains this.
03:50So everyone's wondering now what happens next.
03:53Is Bolsonaro going to be arrested today?
03:55Where are they going to take him?
03:56Well, first of all, there's a period of five days that's just started
04:00in which the lawyers of the defense can submit motions for clarification and motions for review.
04:08Motions for clarification involve parts of the decision that they feel are murky.
04:13For example, if the numbers don't add up between the sentences for the different crimes
04:17and the final sentence for a defendant, they can ask for clarification.
04:21This can result in lowering some sentences, altering the fines, and things like that.
04:28And they have five days to submit those.
04:30The second kind of motion is called a motion for review.
04:33This would have more power in some cases even allowing the ruling to be kicked up to the full plenary session of the Supreme Court,
04:43which has 11 members.
04:44But it doesn't look like they have the right to submit these motions because they have to be based on dissenting opinions.
04:52And for that to happen, they need to have more than one.
04:54There was only one justice who voted for acquittal, Minister Louise Fuchs.
04:59That doesn't provide enough basis for motions for review.
05:03So after the court receives the motions, they'll deliberate on them.
05:08They'll issue their final response.
05:11And then they have a period of 60 days to publish the terms and conditions of the arrests.
05:17Now, normally this happens a lot faster than 60 days.
05:21The last time there was a big high-profile case, it took them about 15 days to issue the terms and conditions.
05:27So basically this means it's going to be a few weeks and up to maybe two months before anyone goes behind bars.
05:35In the case of former President Jair Bolsonaro, they're talking about taking him to a room in the federal police headquarters,
05:41which is the same situation that former President Lula found himself in when he was arrested on false pretenses in 2018.
05:49And precisely after Brazil's former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro was convicted of attempting a coup,
05:57hundreds of citizens took to the streets to celebrate.
06:00Across the South American country, squares turned into festivals celebrating the Supreme Court's verdict and defending democracy.
06:08Citizens asserted that this conviction marks the end of a threatening and authoritarian cycle in the country.
06:14Supporters of President Luiz Ignacio Lula da Silva viewed the conviction as a necessary measure to protect democracy
06:20and ensure that no one is above the law.
06:28Presently in this context, a group of students took to the streets of Brasilia
06:33to celebrate the conviction of former President Bolsonaro.
06:36So, today's conviction reflects what we're feeling, not only a sense of justice, but also hope for a sovereign future for Brazil.
06:47Above all, it shows that by defending democracy, starting from the defense of democracy,
06:52we can achieve a truly beautiful national project for our country.
06:57And now we have a short break coming up, but first, remember you can join us on TikTok,

07:16Welcome back to From the South.
07:17We continue with more information.
07:19In this case, we go to Argentina,
07:21because President Javier Millet vetoed a law approved by Congress
07:25to distribute funding to the nation's provinces amid tensions between the executive and the provincial leaders.
07:32Millet excused the veto, arguing that the application of the law would compromise fiscal balance.
07:40The project would have distributed the national treasury contributions automatically,
07:44following the same proportions as the general federal tax-sharing arrangements.
07:50The action, which comes at a time when the administration has been seeking negotiations
07:55with governors after Sunday's electoral loss in Buenos Aires province,
07:59has caused concern, especially among members of the United Provinces bloc.
08:04The law has been sent to the Senate, which may try to reverse the president's decision by means of a vote.
08:11And also in Argentina, same context, after President Millet vetoed both the university funding
08:24and the pediatric emergency law, the educational community, together with health workers,
08:29have announced a national strike.
08:31In addition, striking workers warned that a third federal mobilization is being prepared
08:37in front of the National Congress,
08:39while the deputies are getting ready to debate and repeal the presidential vetoes.
08:44For their part, the authorities of the University of Buenos Aires
08:46and the National Inter-University Council rejected the measures of the president
08:52and warned about the seriousness of the budgetary situation.
09:01And we now move to other topics.
09:05On Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed the arrest of the suspected gunman
09:10responsible for the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk two days ago.
09:14The head of state unveiled that a family member had given its whereabouts to the police
09:20and that pending investigation authorities believe with a high degree of certainty
09:25that the detained individual is in fact Kirk's murderer.
09:29The suspect's identity was later revealed to be a 22-year-old Utah resident Tyler Robinson
09:35by the state's Governor Spencer Cox at a joint conference with the FBI.
09:42Conservative right-wing activist Charlie Kirk was shot to death during a speaking engagement
09:47at Utah Valley University on Wednesday, launching a manhunt for the killer
09:52and sparking divisive public reactions.
09:55As he did that, he left some palm impressions.
10:00Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.
10:01We got him.
10:04On the evening of September 11th, a family member of Tyler Robinson reached out to a family friend
10:10who contacted the Washington County Sheriff's Office with information that Robinson had confessed
10:16to them or implied that he had committed the incident.
10:19This information was relayed to the Utah County Sheriff's Office and seen investigators at Utah Valley University.
10:26This information was also conveyed to the FBI.
10:30Investigators reviewed additional video footage from UVU surveillance
10:34and identified Robinson arriving on UVU campus in a gray Dodge Challenger
10:39at approximately 8.29 a.m. on September 10th.
10:43We go now to Barcelona as thousands of protesters took to the streets to demand independence for Catalonia
10:54on the Autonomous Communities National Day.
10:56The demonstration was attended by more than 20,000 people who waved banners
11:02and chanted independent slogans calling for cessation from Spain.
11:06Despite the large number of participants, the separatist movement faces internal divisions
11:12due to the controversial proposal by the far-right party Catalan Alliance.
11:17This mobilization comes amidst a wide-ranging debate within Spain on the independence of Catalonia
11:24divided between those who insist on self-determination
11:27and those who call for strengthening dialogue with the Spanish state.
11:36And in the United Kingdom, a mural by the artist Bansky was removed from the fachada of the Royal Courts of London
11:44which depicted a judge striking an unarmed protester.
11:48The work, which symbolizes institutional violence and judicial repression,
11:53was quickly covered up and later removed, which led to accusations of censorship,
11:58especially in the context of the recent ban on the activist group Palestine Action.
12:03Bansky's intervention, renowned for its political and social criticism,
12:09became a catalyst for debate on freedom of expression and the limits of protests in the UK.
12:15Despite its rapid removal, the mural left a significant message
12:19questioning power structures and social injustice.
12:23In other news, on Friday in the Philippines, university students abandoned their classes
12:33to protest against recent measures taken by the government of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
12:40Precisely, hundreds demonstrated in the capital, Manila,
12:43against budget cuts and poorly executed infrastructure projects.
12:48A few days ago, two senators were implicated in a corruption case involving flood control projects,
12:54which is currently under investigation by the Philippine Congress.
12:57In this scenario, professors and activist groups supported the students
13:02and called for transparency and accountability from the government and other politicians as well.
13:08And meanwhile, the Nepalese army declared a nationwide curfew following anti-government protests
13:20that left Dawson's stead and forced the resignation of the prime minister and government.
13:25Protests broke out at the beginning of the week after the government had decided
13:29to block social media platforms for failing to comply with the recently passed law on the regulation.
13:36This decision caused public outrage resulting in 51 deaths, fires and the escape of more than 13,000 prisoners
13:45from prisons across the country.
13:47The situation in the country is critical as it finds itself at a crossroads
13:53while a transitional government is being established to restore stability and calm things down.

14:20Welcome back to From the South.
14:31We continue with more information.
14:33Russia and Belarus armed forces have began the Sabhat 2025 strategic exercises
14:39with the aim of protecting the interest and security of both nations.
14:43According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the maneuvers will be held at training camps in both countries
14:50and in the Baltic and Barents seas with the aim of improving the skills of soldiers at the interactive level
14:57and in regional and coalition troops in defense of peace.
15:01During the drill, Moscow and Minsk will work on issues of troop control in the event of aggression,
15:07implementing actions to neutralize threats and stabilize the situation at the borders.
15:19At the same time, French President Emmanuel Macron announced the deployment of military aircraft to Poland
15:25to protect its airspace and NATO's eastern flank.
15:29This came after an alleged incursion by Russian unmanned vehicles into Polish territory
15:35in fulfillment of a commitment made to the country's Prime Minister, Donald Tusk.
15:40In addition, the United Kingdom is identifying its sanctions against Moscow,
15:45prohibiting the transit of 70 Russian oil tankers from its fleet.
15:49And the government of the United Kingdom has issued a new set of unilateral sanctions on Asian companies
16:02under allegation that they support Russia's special operation on Ukraine.
16:06The package includes measures for companies and individuals from China, Turkey, India and Thailand
16:13on the basis that they maintain trade relations with Moscow.
16:17However, the British government has failed to provide data on their specific activities.
16:23In this regard, a spokesperson from Beijing's embassy in London condemned the actions,
16:29stating that they undermined the legitimate right and interests of Chinese enterprises.
16:34In addition, trade experts highlighted that these actions demonstrate the West's pressure
16:40to achieve global alignment and pointed out the risk of disruption to international supply networks.
16:48And on Friday, medical sources in the Gaza Strip confirmed that Israeli attacks have killed at least 50 people
17:15so far during the day, 14 of which belonged to the same family.
17:20The figure we are looking at includes at least 37 people killed in Gaza City,
17:27at the north of the besieged territory.
17:29Also, four more civilians were murdered in a strike on the Sheikh Radhan district.
17:35Meanwhile, Palestinian deaths were also reported in the Al-Sudaniya area, northwest of Gaza,
17:41after a house was hit in an Israeli strike.
17:45And also in Rafa, a Palestinian citizen was shot by Zionist forces while waiting for humanitarian aid.
17:51The Israeli regime has continued its brutal offensive in the enclave,
17:56bringing the death toll to more than 64,700 since October of 2023.
18:03There were six families, around 45 people, trapped under the rubble.
18:15Only three people were pulled out alive, and they are now in the ICU.
18:20Of the remaining 42, we managed to recover 14 bodies from under the rubble.
18:25The rest are still buried because neither we nor the civil defense were able to pull them out,
18:29after artillery fire directed at us.
18:34And the Israeli forces have stepped up aggressions in the Palestinian city of Tulkarem,
18:39in the occupied West Bank as well, conducting several arrest, house raids and land demolitions.
18:45Israel forces raided homes in the southern neighborhood located near the Akkazan Mosque,
18:51and carried out search and vandalism operations, objecting citizens to interrogations.
18:57Israeli troops also converted several buildings into military barracks,
19:02including a residential building, while carrying out extensive surges and arrests of dozens of Palestinians.
19:10Other Tel Aviv army forces deployed their vehicles and infantry units on Nablus Street,
19:15adjacent to Tulkarem camp,
19:18while their excavators demolished several greenhouses in the suburb of Dunbaba.
19:27And on Friday, the Sadat governorate in Yemen was the scene of a massive march in support of the Palestinian people.
19:36The Yemenis rejected the Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip,
19:41with the slogans,
19:42Loyalty to Doth Killed,
19:44and we will not relent in our support for Gaza, regardless of the sacrifices.
19:49The protesters emphasized that verbal support is not enough,
19:53and that they are ready to join training and mobilization centers to defend the Palestinian enclave from Israeli aggression.
19:59Additionally, Yemenis started that the pro-Palestinian marches are a challenge to the permissive policies
20:07that the Zionist regime is trying to impose.
20:15And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
