00:00It's with the Steelers a little change of the script you know that one felt good for him and and what a win for Josh Allen and the Bills to be able to beat a conference rival week one that's a big win could be a really big win by the three offense five yard comedy second hour that is the fourth false start against the Chicago Bears here in the first half where do you want to go in that Buffalo Baltimore game Bills trailed by 15
00:29with under four minutes left it's the fourth win in over 2,300 NFL games in that situation since 2000 Ravens 25 and 0 all time when scoring 40 plus Josh Allen 394 two touchdowns through the air and two on the ground and Lamar was outstanding too here's Zaccheaus first down Chicago
00:52Alameda who last year was good with the commanders get 16 yards on a dart from Caleb Williams well it just kind of opens up I mean he had his choice as to whatever he wanted to do you see Alameda Zaccheaus he also had cold combat but the parting of the seas take your pick
01:12I like Alameda Zaccheaus he comes in and I thought he had nice chemistry what I saw of him with Caleb Williams in training camp and in these preseason games here's Swift
01:27DeAndre brought down by Dallas Turner who the Vikings are hoping takes a big step in his second season a first round pick from Alabama
01:39last season had three sacks and interception as a rookie but more consistent play they want
01:45made the stop second and seven this is a big drive right here for Minnesota
01:50defensively to try to keep from giving up any points I mean this is the Bears get a chance to extend their lead they get the ball to start the second half
02:00a little different for this Minnesota Vikings defense not playing with the leads they did a year ago
02:05here is Swift gets hit by pace
02:09and that will take us to the two minute warning
02:14did we get the cartoon in yeah
02:17we did we did
02:18got it in two minutes left in the half at Soldier Field
02:23Bears moving the football leading
02:25seven three
02:26stay tuned for the All-State Halftime SVP Ryan Clark Jason Kelsey
02:41we'll have their takeaways from the first half of this game Boomer will have his fastest three minutes
02:46fun start to the season
02:49through week one week one comes to a close here tonight third down and five
02:54two ends
02:57four
03:02Caleb Williams throws he's got Zaccheaus who was in motion at the start of that play
03:13and ends up out of the right side a catch and throw of seven yards
03:19A really nice route here by Zaccheaus as he comes in motion and then pivots back out and he creates some separation then off the line of scrimmage and a ball that's thrown on the money.
03:28Now we saw from Minnesota a four-man rush, but they've got a spy in the middle.
03:33And so you tie up a rusher just because he's keeping his eyes on Caleb because of the fact he's been able to scramble.
03:42So you then remove a defender from coverage as well.
03:49And off to Swift, Caleb Williams, all four of his runs were scrambles in this game when protection broke down.
03:59He's got four scrambles, 32 yards, two first downs, and a touchdown run, the only touchdown of the game.
04:06And look at time of possession just dominated by Chicago.
04:10Yeah, if you're Minnesota, you've just got to be happy with the fact that right now you're only down four points.
04:16And if you can hold Chicago to a field goal as badly as you've been outplayed in this first half, it'd just be a one-possession game.
04:26Toss to Swift, bends it back, not much.
04:28Third down coming up.
04:31Dallas Turner has been involved.
04:33Bears have one timeout.
04:36The Vikings, if they're trying to conserve time, have two, and they're letting the clock run.
04:42Yeah, here you are, third down, you've got two timeouts, you've got a chance to possibly get the ball back into your hands, and yet Kevin O'Connell is elected to let the clock run.
04:51The Bears certainly aren't going to stop the clock.
04:53They'll let this thing run down as well.
04:55And give themselves an opportunity to control things going in here at half.
05:06Look at all that movement defensively on third down and five to the sideline.
05:12Catch is made by Adunze.
05:14Murphy is there, and it's fourth down.
05:16It's fourth down and two after a completion of three yards.
05:24They've gone forward once on fourth and short down here.
05:27Will they go again?
05:34For now, the offense stays out there.
05:37Yeah, I would expect that Ben Johnson's going to go for it here.
05:41The Vikings skews one of their two remaining timeouts.
05:47Chicago gets the ball to start the second half on top of all this.
05:51And with that, they're going to bring their kicker, Cairo Santos, on.
05:57Trying to make this a seven-point game again.
06:02And attempt to 42-yard.
06:04It was 21 of 25 last year.
06:12His sixth year with the Bears during his second tenure in Chicago.
06:27Just sneaks it inside the right upright.
06:32Not an easy place to kick.
06:34And Santos, I'm sure, will take it.
06:38From 42 yards away.
06:41Made it by.
06:44He squeezed it in there.
06:46That much.
06:49And it's a seven-point game again.
06:53I think overall, Chicago, you would
06:55think that Ben Johnson feels pretty good with what they've been able to do.
07:00This is, of course, some of these divisional games
07:03that we've seen here on opening weekend.
07:07He's able to come in with a young ball club and all the things that he's trying to get going
07:12in the right direction and get a win against this team that won 14 games last year.
07:17That would be a great start to his year.
07:19When you think, Ben Johnson, you think of the three previous years as offensive coordinator in Detroit.
07:25You think about not just prolific offense, but gadget plays, offensive linemen throwing passes, catching passes.
07:34We saw Goff catch a touchdown last year.
07:38They're not really there.
07:39No.
07:40Yeah.
07:40They just want to, they want to put one foot in front of the other right now.
07:43Yeah, and I, and none of Dan Campbell's run, you know, rubbed off on him coming over.
07:49I think Dan Campbell would have been going for it there.
07:55Here's a return by Miles Price.
07:57Just able to get across the 30.
08:03But here you go.
08:03Just to remind you of some of the Ben Johnson trick plays.
08:06Last year, week three against Arizona, hook and ladder, Amon Ross St. Brown, Jameer Gibbs.
08:11Helped him to a win.
08:12Here's the one we saw against the Seahawks with Jared Goff catching a touchdown pass.
08:17Week six against the Dallas Cowboys.
08:20He's the reverse flea flicker resulted in a 52-yard touchdown pass to Sam Laporta in a 47-9 victory.
08:29I would imagine that it would be fun to play offense knowing that that man is your coordinator
08:35as they had over the last three years in Detroit.
08:38Yeah, and I think right now his mindset, hey, let's get good at the easy things first,
08:42and then we'll go from there.
08:44Well, they're going to push it.
08:46And why not?
08:47Naylor, and there's action.
08:51They've got one timeout left.
08:58And this officiating crews had a tough time spotting the football in this game.
09:03They finally blow it dead because Naylor got out of bounds.
09:11Final timeout, Minnesota, 30-second timeout.
09:14Well, we are in disagreement with where they're putting the football right now,
09:21but either way, the knee is down, so he did not get out of bounds.
09:26He's contacted, and that's why Minnesota Russell Yurk had to use their final timeout.
09:31Absolutely.
09:32He correctly ruled that he was down by contact inbound, so Minnesota had to call a timeout to stop the clock.
09:38Remember, they used the timeout on the last defensive possession just before the field goal,
09:43so, you know, they're not able to then try to run anything else.
09:48Well, now, with 11 seconds left and no timeouts,
09:53they're going to move the ball, which is what we expected here.
09:59They had a bad spot on the football, so they're moving it back.
10:02Kevin O'Connell has already made the decision for the moment that he was going to send Will Rykert out.
10:10But now the ball's sitting at the 41,
10:14which is a 59-yard try by Rykert instead of, with no timeouts,
10:22having the young quarterback try and get a little more yardage.
10:25His career best is 58, so it's right in that range.
10:3059-yard try by Rykert.
10:34With 11 seconds to go.
10:35High snap, Rykert.
10:38He's got it!
10:43And it's a new career high for Will Rykert.
10:47And that completion to Jalen Naylor got the Vikings into the edge of field goal range,
10:55and Rykert did the rest.
10:56Yeah, he sure did.
10:57I mean, he had to drive this ball pretty hard to get it across.
11:01He got all of it.
11:03That's an outstanding job.
11:04What was lost in that is the route by Jalen Naylor
11:07to get themselves in a position to even give Rykert an opportunity for this play.
11:13Justin Jefferson loving it.
11:15The completion was 28 yards for J.J. McCarthy,
11:20who's watching that sail through the uprights.
11:23That ties the 59-yarder, a soldier field record,
11:28which belongs to, of all people, Matt Trader from 2015,
11:32who was the hero and made the game-winning kick last night
11:36as he had spent, according to Mike Tirico,
11:40like 100 hours in Western New York with his new team, the Buffalo Bills.
11:46Well, that's big time by him coming through there
11:50with a career-best 59-yarder.
11:54That might be the spark and boost that this team needed going in at half.
12:03I mean, McCarthy basically doubled his passing yards on that completion to Naylor.
12:12Now, here's a nice return by Luther Burden, the rookie from Missouri,
12:17and that's the end of the half.
12:19As Burden was trying to break one, he got it to midfield,
12:24and that was it, 43-yard return.
12:27But the half comes to a close in a 10-6 game.
12:31Caleb Williams, the hot start.
12:33Bears defense forcing four three-and-outs.
12:36Justin Jefferson just one catch in the first half.
12:40It's a 10-6 game.
12:41The All-State halftime is coming your way next.
12:50Tonight's first-half highlights are presented by Target.
12:55What a fun night and a great way to cap.
12:57We want it.
12:58McCarthy is down.
13:00They forced the three and out.
13:02What a throw.
13:03Really was.
13:05Williams looking for the end zone.
13:06He is in.
13:08Touchdown.
13:11Get everything you need to win game day at Target.
13:17As we welcome you back, you're watching NFL Kickoff,
13:21presented by YouTube TV.
13:26Great scene here in Chicago.
13:28Welcome inside the broadcast booth.
13:31Joe Buck along with Troy Aikman.
13:33Coaching makes a difference.
13:34And to me, Caleb Williams looks poised, settled,
13:38and a lot different than he did last year.
13:40There's no question that Ben Johnson has been able to settle him down,
13:44get him knowing where he wants him going with the football.
13:48And remember, in this first half, I mean,
13:49neither quarterback got much help from the running game.
13:52So, Caleb, for the Chicago Bears, he was having to do it himself,
13:55with his legs, and then also with his arm.
13:58And they get an opportunity here to start this second half with the football again.
14:01Here is DuVernay on the return.
14:07Moments ago, Laura Rutledge caught up with Ben Johnson.
14:11Ben, you get the ball to start this second half.
14:13What's most important for Caleb Williams right now?
14:16He just seems to keep getting completions.
14:17He's doing a great job taking what's there, and he's extending some plays.
14:20And so, keep on doing what he's doing.
14:23What can you say about your defense and the way they've handled J.J.
14:25He's outstanding right now.
14:26We gave up a little pass interference there that hurt us,
14:29and we gave up that big one at the back end.
14:31But other than that, they're playing a great game.
14:33All right, thanks, Ben.
14:34Joe.
14:35All right, Laura, thanks.
14:35He's anxious to get back out there.
14:37He didn't even hear the end of the question.
14:48Caleb Williams surveys and then throws out of the reach of DeAndre Swift.
14:55Ben Johnson was a walk-on quarterback at North Carolina, 0-4 to 0-6.
15:04Late high school football in Asheville, North Carolina.
15:07Won a state championship there.
15:09Idolized Joe Montana.
15:11His father was a high school football coach.
15:14He is, I guess it would be a negative to say somebody's wound tight.
15:18This isn't meant to be at all.
15:19I think he is kind of a, no, actually, you know, there's nothing extra in there.
15:24If he doesn't like the way you're playing, or if he wants to not hear the end of your question,
15:29he's going to let you know.
15:31Second down and 10.
15:32Swift, a good job to pick up a pass rusher, and the pass for Komet is out of his reach.
15:41Third down.
15:42Yeah, I think, Joe, the, well, this is, doesn't matter if it's football or any other sport or any other business.
15:50I think the leaders have to bring the urgency, and there's no question that Ben Johnson has brought urgency to Chicago
15:58in the way that he has handled this football team and the expectations that he has brought.
16:04And it's one of the reasons why I really believe you can see his frustration there.
16:08I think he's frustrated because Caleb Williams had an opportunity to get the ball to the rookie, Colston Lovlin,
16:13in the middle of the field, and he didn't do it.
16:15But he's an impatient guy, for sure.
16:18And now a throw behind Zaccheaus.
16:21Pressure on Caleb Williams, who ends up on the ground.
16:25And in a blink, it's fourth down and a punt upcoming from Torrey Taylor.
16:29Now, this is the pressure on this last play.
16:32And just see, Grenard, he pushes the left tackle right back into his lap.
16:37And, you know, he's feeling the pressure and then not getting the ball out accurately the way that he would like.
16:42But I still think, even though I think when Caleb goes back and watches this film, he's going to see some things that he wishes he had thrown.
16:52But overall, I think he's handled everything really well against an unpredictable defense.
16:57And the Vikings will start inside Chicago territory after 21-yard return by the rookie, Miles Price.
17:16And with J.J. McCarthy settling in, one of, if not the best, receiver in the game is going to have to show a little patience.
17:26Because I'm sure Justin Jefferson could get frustrated here tonight.
17:31Yeah, there's no question that when you're an all-pro receiver like he is, and he's a great teammate, and I do believe he's an unselfish player,
17:40he knows what he's capable of doing, and he just hasn't, especially with two of the top corners out of this ballgame for Chicago,
17:48for them not to take advantage of it.
17:49Play action, and again, this ball, and a flag comes in after McCarthy got hit.
17:59A ball, and the arm of McCarthy was hit as he let it go, and then a flag came in when McCarthy
18:07got knocked to the ground by Odengbo.
18:11Personal foul, rough in the past, number 55 defense, 15-yard penalty, automatic first foul.
18:21They run a game, and they got Odengbo coming right up the middle, and you see, there's the launch,
18:26and it's just to the head and neck area with the shoulder.
18:29He's trying to take the head out of it.
18:31But when you come in, and you see the end of this with the shoulder to the head, it was a pretty, pretty good hit.
18:38I think it was the right call.
18:42Montez Sweat was involved as well.
18:44Bears fans don't agree with the call.
18:48But that 15-yarder gets the ball down inside the 35.
18:56Here's Jones.
18:57Pressure off the edge.
18:58Bayard came in to make the stop.
19:01We're talking about Justin Jefferson.
19:05He has been targeted twice.
19:06He has one catch.
19:10And we'll see who's been playing across from him.
19:12Nashawn Wright, Tyreek Stevenson, and Nick McLeod.
19:18Well, they try to make up for the absence of Jalen Johnson, their best corner.
19:23You hold Justin Jefferson to one catch in four yards.
19:27Here's a toss to Aaron Jones.
19:30Tries to cut it back.
19:33Third and long coming up as Brisker makes a stop.
19:36The other guy we touched on at the beginning of the game.
19:38It's not here.
19:40One of the best nickel corners in the game in Kyler Gordon.
19:43So they're thin back there.
19:45But they're holding up pretty well.
19:46They're holding up exceptionally well.
19:48Part of it is because of the way these guys who have had to step in have played.
19:52Nashawn Wright, Nick McLeod.
19:54But the other part of this is this defensive front.
19:58And that was a big question mark coming into this game.
20:01How would they fare?
20:03And they've gotten to J.J. McCarthy.
20:05So this revamped offensive line for Minnesota has not been as strong as they'd like.
20:12Play clock is at one.
20:14They just got it away on third and long.
20:16Watch out.
20:17Picked off.
20:18There's Wright.
20:19Down the sideline.
20:21Gets a block.
20:22And now a touchdown.
20:25The former Vikings.
20:28Pick six.
20:29Pick six.
21:00Fourth year in the league.
21:02On the Vikings practice squad last year.
21:05And that pass was telegraphed and Wright took care of the rest.
21:08They brought the pressure.
21:09Dennis Allen called it up.
21:11At the perfect time.
21:13With John Wright sitting on the route.
21:17Gets his first career pick six.
21:19And then went 74 yards.
21:21For the touchdown.
21:27What a moment.
21:29For the fourth year pro from Oregon State.
21:32Former Viking.
21:34Playing in place of Jalen Johnson.
21:37Who's loving every second of it.
21:40Bears by 11.
21:41Well, the first year starter, J.J. McCarthy, who sat out all of last year with a torn meniscus in his right knee.
21:56Just watched Nashawn Wright go the other way, 74 yards, basically a 10-point swing as the Vikings were in field goal range.
22:06It was a seven-man rush.
22:08First time Dennis Allen's called the blitz all night long.
22:11Nashawn Wright, who was on the practice squad for Minnesota last year, working against Justin Jefferson.
22:16He's expecting the ball out, knowing they can't protect.
22:19He sits on it, and he makes a house call.
22:23This is a guy last year who did not play a defensive snap for Minnesota, just making his fourth career start in the NFL.
22:32But remind yourself, the play clock, again, was going down to one second.
22:39And so the rushers were able to tee off, and you've got a quarterback who was rushed, as he has been all night.
22:44Take time Chandler up near the 29, knocked down by Jonathan Owens.
22:53Return of 24 yards, and now McCarthy, after the pick six, has to go right back to work, and it's time to get going.
23:00Well, we saw to start this game that, you know, a lot of these plays are scripted.
23:05Kevin O'Connell scripts plays the first 20, first 25 plays, and yet they were having issues with the play clock.
23:11And he's trying to check protection, trying to get to the right play, whatever it might be.
23:16But it's been a reoccurring problem throughout this game.
23:20And it was on the last play when it got flipped.
23:22Then the Sean Wright took to the house.
23:27Here's a toss to Mason.
23:29Nice cutback.
23:31Jordan Mason last year made six starts while Christian McCaffrey was injured.
23:37An average 95 rush yards a game over the first seven.
23:41And you talked about them adding him.
23:42Then they added a two-year contract next to his name.
23:46And he's been the better of the two backs tonight.
23:49Well, he has.
23:49They haven't gotten quite enough yet.
23:52But, you know, talking with Kevin O'Connell, the biggest point of emphasis for J.J. McCarthy
24:00was how he handled the pre-snap mechanics of this offense.
24:07Play action.
24:09Steps up.
24:10Down he goes.
24:13That is Tano Passigno, who just came up from the practice squad for this game and a loss of seven.
24:23Passing, yo, he's getting in the action now.
24:27And some time with Kansas City.
24:29Coming right up the top here.
24:31And you've got School, again, who's making the start because of all-world.
24:35Christian Darisaw, unable to go.
24:39And he gives up the sack on McCarthy.
24:45Now third and 13.
24:48Things have got to be moving awfully fast for J.J. McCarthy right now.
24:52Normally, they slow down.
24:53They're getting faster now.
24:55That'll be a delay a game.
24:58They cannot get the plays off.
25:00Play game offense.
25:01There's a lot on a quarterback within this offense, really both of these offenses.
25:12And just trying to get to the line of scrimmage.
25:15Sometimes, you've always got your eyes on the play clock.
25:18He certainly understands.
25:19And he hasn't been fooled by that.
25:22But they just.
25:24And when you're Russ, you're already Russ as a young quarterback making his first NFL start.
25:28But when you're under the gun of the play clock, you know, then you're not, you're just not even able to even see the defense.
25:36You're just so worried about the snap.
25:38And obviously, he's having even a hard time hearing the calls coming in.
25:42They play a conservative hand to Mason, and he is dumped.
25:46By Dexter.
25:53A loss of two, and things are snowballing here for the Vikings.
25:57You know, we've talked a lot about Caleb Williams and Ben Johnson and what they've done on the offensive side of the ball.
26:03And again, we all know that McCarthy is making his first NFL start.
26:06But this defense and what Dennis Allen has brought here tonight in the way that they have really excelled against an excellent group.
26:16Been pretty impressive.
26:19The punt by Wright.
26:22Duvernay from the 30, a juggle, and then stepped out of bounds.
26:27Dennis Allen has done some job with this defense.
26:32Flag is down on that punt.
26:3324th season, and as an NFL coach, he's been a head coach with the Raiders.
26:40And, of course, most recently with the Saints, and his group is flying around tonight.
26:44They really are.
26:45And he's played it pretty close to the best.
26:49Hody, number 43 of the receiving team.
26:52Ten-yard penalty from the end of the kick.
26:55First down to Chicago.
26:56Time out.
26:57He's played it pretty close to the best until the one blitz when he got the interception to turn for a touchdown.
27:03But those guys up front are playing some good football.
27:05Came in talking about the two quarterbacks.
27:07We may go out of this game talking about this Bears defense.
27:17Here in Chicago at halftime, they honor the Super Bowl 20 champions, 1985.
27:25Jim McMahon got a huge roar here tonight.
27:29Mike Singletary, Mike Singletary, I mean, you go on down the list, and a team that Richard Dent in Hampton, about to get the Lombardi trophy.
27:52Here's a toss to Swift over the right side, and no gain.
27:57I mean, that defense in baseball, when a team's really good and they can pound the ball, you say, well, they're not the 27 Yankees in the NFL.
28:08Everybody goes, well, they're not the 85 Bears.
28:10But this defense tonight would make some of those guys, including guys that are in Canton, proud with the way they've played against the Vikings defensively.
28:20They definitely made a good showing, for sure, on a night when we were honoring the 85 Bears.
28:25And what a group that was.
28:27I was fortunate not to be drafted until 1989.
28:32Caleb Williams lets it fly.
28:34He has got more and more on a perfect throw from Caleb Williams.
28:41He's got 22 yards.
28:43Well, this is exactly what Ben Johnson wants to see.
28:46The play action and then the pass to the outside to D.J. Moore.
28:50This route is exceptional.
28:54And the confidence in which Caleb Williams hits his back foot, comes up, lets it go, is terrific.
29:02This is what Ben Johnson watched for the last three years in Detroit with Jared Goff when he was calling the plays.
29:08He was just able to get it away with pressure in his face and delivered a strike play action.
29:14And that's the rookie, Luther Burton III, and he is dropped immediately by Andrew Van Ginkle.
29:20So now, if you're the Vikings, and you're seeing what your young quarterback is doing offensively, this defense, which is one of the best, was a year ago in the NFL,
29:29he's got to try to take matters into their own hands, and it's, it's not foreign as far as the style.
29:37You know, if you say, well, now we've got to be more aggressive, they're already aggressive.
29:40Brian Flores, he has no issue with that, but it's just a little different.
29:45That call sheet looks a little different when you're trailing by 11 points as opposed to playing with a lead like they were so many times a year ago.
29:54This pass was affected as Zaccheaus watched it bounce in there.
29:58Andrew Van Ginkle was right there again.
30:02He's been all over the place.
30:05Five-man rush by this Minnesota defense, and Andrew Van Ginkle, I mean, this guy, you talk about versatile athletes that can do just about anything.
30:13He was such a key guy last year, having played for Brian Flores in Miami and knowing how to use him.
30:21I mean, he lines up everywhere.
30:23He'll line up at slot.
30:24He'll be edge rusher, off the ball, linebacker.
30:26He does it all.
30:28Vikings need a stop on third down and 13.
30:32Good protection.
30:34Loveland, the rookie, and Metellus wraps him up.
30:38That is good work by this Vikings defense, and if they want to hang in there in this ballgame, it's the defense that's got to get it done, and they just did.
30:47Yeah, no, they needed to come up with a stop, and Colston Loveland, who just caught that ball, he's got two catches on the night.
30:56He was their first-round draft pick, and Ben Johnson likes the two tight end personnel, and Colston Loveland, he's going to get plenty of opportunities.
31:07He's had a nice career in Michigan, and he's going to be a good player.
31:11Taylor, the punt, just got it away.
31:20No flag.
31:21Taylor ended up on the ground.
31:23Here is Price.
31:26He's had a nice evening tonight in his NFL debut.
31:2918-yard return after a 51-yard punt as we check in with Timothy O'Toole's, a pub here in Chicago.
31:41Thanks for letting us peek in and wetting our appetite.
31:45Downtown Chicago all lit up, and this fan base is starved for a winner, and they're seeing some good things tonight, not just from their young quarterback, Caleb Williams.
32:06The head coaching debut of Ben Johnson for the defense.
32:08Eight possessions for the Vikings, only five first downs for Minnesota, and 77 total yards.
32:17But it's only an 11-point game.
32:24From the 23, play action.
32:27Hawkinson has to make a sliding catch and a short game.
32:31Ball came out, but he was down.
32:34That's the call right now.
32:36The field's a catch, and the receiver's down by contact, second down.
32:40As McLeod and Sewell came together, I think it's worth talking about how Kevin O'Connell, here's the catch,
32:54and his knee is down, ball comes out, and a challenge flag first thrown by Ben Johnson.
33:06I don't see much there, do you, Russell Yerke?
33:09No, I don't see anything.
33:10He controlled the ball.
33:11He completed the process of the catch.
33:13The knee was down, and he was contacted by a defender, so he's down by contact before he gets up and the ball comes out.
33:20I think this challenge would be unsuccessful.
33:21Chicago's challenging the rolling on the field, the receiver being down by contact.
33:25But the challenge by Ben Johnson will get the call when we come back.
33:39In replay, the call stands, and Russell Yerke, our rules analyst.
33:53Russell, it doesn't matter that Sewell came in and just punched the ball.
33:58Correct.
33:59The punching of the ball is a football play, and that's entirely legal.
34:03Even if he incidentally contacts the body, that's not a foul.
34:06So the knee was down.
34:07He had possession.
34:09Bears lose a timeout.
34:11And on second down and eight, they set up a screen for Aaron Jones.
34:16Gets a block out there.
34:18And Jones, with one of his bigger plays of the game, is Donovan Jackson, the rookie, was out there.
34:24And Noah Sewell, with a good piece of work to make the tackle, gain a six.
34:28And Noah Sewell, who's made the start for the injured T.J. Edwards, comes up and makes a nice play.
34:34And, you know, right now, Kevin O'Connell, that call sheet for him, isn't looking too big.
34:38And trying to figure out, you know, they want to get this defense off of them and get the ball down the field.
34:44But they haven't been able to protect when they've tried that.
34:47And you'd like to help the young quarterback out running the football, but they've had no success on the ground there either.
34:54It's third down and two.
34:55Play clock inside of five.
34:59McCarthy slings.
35:00There's Thielen.
35:01And the ball came out when Thielen hit the ground.
35:04It's incomplete.
35:06And no argument from Thielen.
35:07It's fourth down.
35:08And the punt team will come on for the Vikings.
35:11It was there, and Thielen couldn't secure it.
35:13Yeah, it sure was.
35:14And this is not typical of Adam Thielen.
35:19But a big moment in the game.
35:21But, you know, good play.
35:22In turn, it loose with Tyreek Stevenson.
35:29So, he's able to rip it out in what would have been their first third down conversion of the night.
35:34So, they just had a hard time sustaining any type of drives and should have there.
35:39Line drive punt.
35:40Duvernay with a fair catch.
35:44Bears ball again as they lead by 11.
35:47Saturday, we have SEC on ABC College Football Tripleheader.
35:53At noon, Wisconsin against number 19, Alabama.
35:57At 3.30, number 6, Georgia takes on number 15, Tennessee.
36:00And at 7.30, Florida against number 3, LSU.
36:04Each game is also available on the all-new ESPN app.
36:12Adam Thielen, who is number 3 on the all-time list for the Vikings in catches.
36:18And receiving touchdowns, matted himself on the sidelines.
36:21As he could not hang on to the ball after the initial catch.
36:26Nice run here by Swift as he plows ahead and gets nine.
36:31Yeah, that was a lot of DeAndre Swift there.
36:35And this offensive front.
36:38Getting a little movement.
36:39I mean, contact right there.
36:44But he just keeps on moving his legs.
36:46And DeAndre Swift's in a little bit of a proven year this year after having somewhat of a disappointing season last year.
36:56When he's had good offensive lines, he's been good.
36:59And last year, he didn't.
37:01And he wasn't so good.
37:02And this is a group that is expected to be a lot better.
37:04And they have been tonight.
37:06D.J. Moore was in the backfield.
37:07He gets it now.
37:09Trying to make moves.
37:11And with that last effort, he's knocked down right at the marker.
37:17Under 5 to go in this third quarter.
37:20And it is a first down for Chicago.
37:25These two head coaches approached preseason football differently.
37:30Ben Johnson played his starters.
37:32Played Caleb Williams.
37:34Kevin O'Connell did not really play J.J. McCarthy much at all.
37:38And I think that's showing up here in this game.
37:43Just 12 snaps for that first unit in the first preseason game.
37:51Here's Swift on a toss.
37:54And I asked Kevin O'Connell about that.
37:55Here's a look at Caleb Williams and what he's been able to do as far as getting the ball out,
38:01which has been preached to him ever since Ben Johnson became the head coach,
38:04that they were not going to sit back there and take 68 sacks, third most in NFL history again this year,
38:11and help out the offensive line.
38:12And he's done a good job of it.
38:14And as we've moved into this second half, he's gotten more and more comfortable.
38:18And you can see by the way he's carrying himself and the way he's throwing the ball.
38:23The ball's coming out quicker as he is chased by Cashman.
38:27He wins that and out of bounds inside Vikings territory, showing his speed in a carry of 13 yards.
38:34Yeah.
38:35You know, when you get the first part of it going with the timing and seeing the field
38:40and getting it to the right guys, then when it's not there and you get pressure,
38:45you know, there's just not a lot of players that can throw the ball from the pocket
38:50and still present that element like Caleb Williams.
38:56Cashman, who was the one chasing him, is down on a knee.
39:01Don't know if he's injured or tired.
39:04Boy, you hope he's just tired because that's a guy who's a key cog in this defense
39:11and missed some time last year along with Ivan Pace.
39:15And when Cashman's not on the field, this is a different defense.
39:20And we've got Van Ginkle, Pace, Cashman, and Grenard.
39:26It's about as good as it gets along that linebacker level.
39:29Here's Cashman chasing him to the sideline and still down on a knee.
39:33And as Troy said, you have to hope he's okay.
39:37Yeah, he pulled up a little bit.
39:39And trying to catch Caleb Williams.
39:46And you see it in training camp and especially in the early part of the year
39:51if you haven't been playing much in training camp.
39:53And Blake Cashman didn't take any snaps in preseason.
39:57Going back to your point, Joe,
39:59I know that you do see a lot of these soft tissue injuries early on.
40:04Eric Wilson takes Cashman's spot.
40:09Hand off to Swift.
40:11Stood up.
40:14Still fighting for maybe an extra yard.
40:16He gets two.
40:16Cashman was trying to go into the tent,
40:24but their center Ryan Kelly is already in there.
40:29So this team last year, Joe,
40:33they were one of the healthiest teams in the NFL.
40:36And obviously that goes a long way in the success then of your season.
40:41But they were banged up.
40:43Harrison Smith, the safety,
40:44he did not play tonight.
40:47And then you've got Kelly
40:48and now along with Blake Cashman in this one.
40:51Nice cutback by Swift.
40:54First down with a ball inside the 35.
41:00And a gain of 12.
41:05That's a nice run by DeAndre Swift.
41:07You can see him start to the front side
41:09and then the cutback once it clogs up.
41:11That's what you're looking for
41:13is that lane right through there.
41:15And he hits it.
41:16It's his longest run of the night.
41:21The back, obviously,
41:23that Ben Johnson's very familiar with.
41:25Got him with, got the defense with snap count, it looks like.
41:36That's Javon Hargrave,
41:38who was added with Jonathan Allen
41:40to beef up the defensive line.
41:43Neutral zone impression, number 97 defense.
41:45Five-year-old penalty.
41:46We've seen him use his cadence a few times a night effectively
41:55to draw off the defense.
42:00Meanwhile, they had that extra offensive lineman,
42:02Theo Benedett, who's come in all night in motion.
42:07Yeah, a big part of what they did in Detroit.
42:09They ran six offensive linemen more than any other team
42:12and he's carried over to Chicago.
42:15Here's Swift.
42:17Just runs right through Isaiah Rogers.
42:20Now, that's, that's, to me,
42:22that's his best run of the night
42:23because he's been labeled as often the case.
42:26When you have the ability that Swift has,
42:28then you're no longer a power runner.
42:30You can't be.
42:31And he's been hearing that long enough.
42:33And that's his, that's as good finish in a run
42:36as you can look at.
42:46They've been asking Swift to be a little more
42:48straight ahead, running north on plays.
42:52And he's shown some power in this game.
42:59Play action.
43:01Good protection.
43:01Flag on the play as Swift makes the catch.
43:11Flag is in the area where you expect a hold.
43:17Holding.
43:17Number 58 offense.
43:19Ten-yard penalty.
43:20Replay.
43:21First out.
43:22Starting right tackle, Darnell Wright.
43:25Talked about the interior of the offensive line for the Bears.
43:28Braxton Jones making his 41st career start at left tackle.
43:36But, there is a hold.
43:39On right.
43:43Yeah, it didn't look like much, quite honestly, to me.
43:45You got...
43:46Troy, I agree with you.
43:47I don't see anything there that would justify a hold.
43:50Yeah, Redman, he just, he kind of went to the ground,
43:53just slipped more than anything.
43:54Manunga in the backfield, the rookie, Williams over the middle,
44:02and is out of the range of Cole Komet.
44:07That was a fastball from Caleb Williams, and it was high and a bit wide,
44:12second and 20.
44:13Yeah, and he's missed a couple of these.
44:16You can see Komet right here.
44:17He's going to come in.
44:17He wants to kind of settle it down because they're in zone,
44:21and the ball just gets away from Caleb Williams enough.
44:24You see how much area there was to complete that pass.
44:28And...
44:29Those are tough.
44:33You saw the expression on Caleb Williams' face after the miss.
44:37Those are hard when you don't take some of the layups that are gimmies.
44:42Second and 20, big pressure.
44:50And the ball just comes out.
44:54And goes out of bounds.
44:57Let's see what the call is here.
44:58Pressure by Eric Wilson, who took over for Blake Cashman.
45:02I think they ruled it incomplete.
45:03At least that's what the umpire did, or excuse me, the referee.
45:06And I think that's the right call.
45:07He was just trying to get it out and avoid the sack
45:09as he was losing his footing.
45:11Like, flag is down.
45:13Here is...
45:18He was not touched.
45:22It's intentional.
45:22It's intentional.
45:22Browning, number 18 offense.
45:24The quarterback was outside the pocket.
45:26However, the pass did not cross the line of scrimmage,
45:28and there were no receivers in the area of the pass.
45:30Lost it down.
45:31Ten-yard penalty.
45:32Third down.
45:33Well, that's a big play with five seconds left
45:35as that backs up Chicago 10 more
45:38on what goes down as intentional grounding
45:41because the ball didn't get back to the line of scrimmage.
45:44Yeah, they've gotten in position to add to their lead,
45:49and they've been going the wrong direction ever since.
45:51That knocks Chicago, for the moment, out of field goal range.
45:56They don't need all 30 yards, but they need a chunk.
46:03Zaccheaus gets it.
46:04And gets that chunk of yardage as the third quarter comes to a close.
46:11It's a 12-yard game.
46:12Bears back in field goal range, having fun tonight.
46:16Matched up against their divisional rival,
46:19and leading it 17-6.
46:21You're watching NFL kickoff presented by YouTube TV.
46:24Well, that was a big 12-yard completion
46:33before the end of the third quarter.
46:35Caleb Williams still frustrated,
46:37but that gets Cairo Santos back into field goal range.
46:41He'll attempt a 50-yarder.
46:44And while this feels like a 4-plus score game,
46:47even if they make this field goal,
46:50it's a two-score game if you want to put it in that category.
46:53Good call by Ben Johnson,
46:55knowing you're not going to likely pick up the first down.
46:57Let's get ourselves in field goal range,
46:59and it was a designed play to put him in a position here for this opportunity.
47:05Santos missed it.
47:10As that just drifted wide to the right,
47:14and this remains an 11-point game.
47:20Yeah, those are tough.
47:21If you get down here and an opportunity to come away with some points
47:24and extend the lead,
47:25and then just not to take advantage of it
47:27and continue to keep Minnesota in this ballgame,
47:32and now they're set up with really good field position.
47:36That's the end of the field,
47:38where Rikert hit from 59 yards in the first half
47:41to tie a Soldier Field record.
47:44J.J. McCarthy rubbing his hands together,
47:48saying, let's go to work.
47:49He's got to.
47:50Throw him for just 56 yards.
47:53But he was hot!
47:55I can't, can't!
47:59They were both hot!
48:01Mason,
48:02right off the gut, broke a tackle.
48:06He got through Noah Sewell,
48:07and a nice strong run by Jordan Mason,
48:10a gain of seven.
48:11As we check in with Lisa.
48:14Yeah, J.J., you can see center Ryan Kelly is back in the game.
48:17He had been in the medical tent.
48:19They were working on his right leg.
48:20They say he is good to go,
48:22but linebacker Blake Cashman has been rolled out
48:25with a hamstring injury.
48:26So another hamstring.
48:31That has hit the Bears hard,
48:32and now it hits Minnesota with Blake Cashman.
48:38Again,
48:39with Mason able to break it
48:41and rumbling down near the 35.
48:44That's the longest run of the night for the Vikings.
48:48Bayard brings him down,
48:49but just like that,
48:50the Vikings
48:51are moving the football,
48:54a gain of 18.
48:55Josh Oliver gets just enough
48:56for the linebacker
48:57in order to give Mason a place
48:59to run with the football.
49:00He breaks that tackle,
49:01then he's able to get past the safety.
49:03Bayard
49:04and a really nice job.
49:06With the field position
49:07that they had
49:07to start this drive,
49:09they have got to capitalize.
49:12Obviously,
49:12they're already in field goal range,
49:14but
49:14they've got to come away
49:15with a touchdown.
49:17They fake it to Mason.
49:19McCarthy protected
49:20to the sideline.
49:21There's Jefferson.
49:23Able to get both feet down,
49:25and he's got a first down.
49:26They finally connect
49:27for a nice shot downfield
49:30for 17 yards.
49:32Now,
49:32good job on the outside
49:33by Justin Jefferson
49:35as they put him in motion.
49:39Tyreek Stevenson
49:40trying to keep up with him
49:41and just lay it out there,
49:43which is what he's able to do
49:45for the easy completion.
49:50Second catch of the game
49:52for Jefferson.
49:53Well,
49:53it didn't take long
49:54for them to get down here.
50:04Mason.
50:05Nice lane.
50:08And Jordan Mason
50:09with
50:10Adam Thielen
50:12out in front of him,
50:13blocking,
50:13gets five.
50:15Well,
50:15they've kind of started
50:16leaning more on Jordan Mason
50:17and rightfully so
50:19against this defense
50:20of the Bears.
50:21It's been pretty tough sledding,
50:22and get a bigger back back there
50:23and see if he can't
50:26move the pile
50:26and make something happen.
50:28And Jordan Mason's
50:28been able to do that
50:29on this drive.
50:40Big toss.
50:42Looking.
50:43Big toss.
50:43Big toss.
