A controversial Northern Territory senator has been accused of going against the interests of her home electorate in raising concerns over what she describes as the damaging impact of "mass migration" in Australia. The northern territory is pushing hard to attract thousands more migrants to fill labour shortages and critics of senator Jacinta Nampijinpa price say her national messaging isn't helping the cause.

00:01A wide land with a low population.
00:05The Northern Territory has a unique position in an ongoing national debate.
00:10Is mass migration, do you believe, a problem for the Northern Territory?
00:14No, I don't think so. I think we've got a pretty big landscape here
00:17where we can fill other people, mate, so go nuts.
00:20In my opinion, no, not really. I reckon any culture can come here
00:24or, you know, explore or learn or anything like that.
00:27Well, we've got limited jobs in that here, so a limited amount of people.
00:32If they bring in skilled labourers, no worries.
00:35Fiery marches around Australia last month, including one in Darwin,
00:40put a spotlight on migration rates,
00:42with an NT senator among the nation's most vocal critics.
00:46The issue that's of great concern, which, you know, I won't be silenced on,
00:51is the issue of mass migration in our country.
00:55But some believe she's working at cross-purposes to her own constituents.
01:00I don't think she even knows who her constituents are.
01:03I think her constituent is Sky News.
01:07The senator's commentary is more about talking to a base of people interstate,
01:14and she should really focus on the needs of the Territory.
01:17There's an active push to attract up to 14,000 more skilled migrants to the NT
01:23to fill labour shortages.
01:25The things we need here in the Territory are health professionals.
01:29And it so happens that most of our health professionals here,
01:33a good chunk of them, are from places like the subcontinent.
01:37And the NT government is today pushing for an increase
01:40to the Territory's annual migrant intake.
01:43We want to grow our population, we want to grow our economy,
01:46and we need more people.
01:47So we're working hard,
01:48and Cinder Price is working hard fighting for the Northern Territory,
01:50and we support her.
01:51Senator Numpajimpa Price did not respond to questions
01:54about whether her rhetoric is at odds with the people who voted her in.
01:59Senator Numpajimpa Price is going through the UK
