An Indian cultural group is calling on Northern Territory Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price to publicly apologise over comments she made last week about migration. The senator has admitted she'd made a mistake in claiming the government lets "large numbers" of Indian migrants into Australia because they vote Labor. But some say the damage has already been done
00:04Darwin's Indian Cultural Society fires off a letter to their home senator, Jacinta Numpajimpa-Price.
00:11We were shocked that a leader of her statue could actually come out in the public
00:16and make sweeping, generic statements about the Indian community, baseless sort of comments.
00:22And it was quite offensive and hurtful.
00:25The country Liberal Party senator last week claimed the Labor federal government allowed large numbers of Indians to migrate to Australia
00:33because, she said, they vote for Labor.
00:36I think Labor like to be able to ensure that they're going to allow those in that would ultimately support their policies, their views and vote for them.
00:45I think just singling out the Indian community, Indian migration and sort of connecting that to politics, I think is just disgusting.
00:53The Cultural Society wants the senator to now make a public apology, echoing calls from within the senator's own party room.
01:01A lot of people have contacted me and expressed support for the idea that Jacinta should, you know, issue an apology
01:07because the issue is still developing, going very badly.
01:10Last year, the country Liberal Party won territory government in a landslide with two Indian-born members elected to parliament.
01:18One of those men is now a minister and says he believes hardly anyone in the community was actually offended.
01:25What Senator Price said was in a context and I think what I would say is about, like, I think there was a context to that
01:33and there is nothing much that I can further add to that.
01:35All I can say is about, like, my experience and the people that I know are very welcomed in the Liberal Party
01:41and we are giving all the opportunities that we could get as any other Australian citizens.
01:46I don't think that, you know, just sweeping it under the carpet or ignoring these types of comments is going to make it go away.
01:54So I think leaders should stand up and call a spade for what it is.
01:58In an interview late today, the senator did not say sorry, but said Indian Territorians have her back.
02:05A relationship at risk the longer the debate drags on.
02:10And if she's наж Vias OK with woman, you are against.
02:12They just safeguarded a friend of your children's research.
02:14They, like, everybody, aircraft or having them.
02:15Each year will take an ISP and drop another chamber of the match.
02:16Wait is she not?
02:17I give diversity and a thousand meters in particular working this way,
02:19one hundred percent at once, great.
02:20And if she has more purity or everything, she needs to be concerned about,
02:22it can cause a lot ofmän человек mixedニα data to their ownönижу group
