What do the newly released Epstein birthday book files reveal, and why are we seeing them now? Columnist Gemma White shares her thoughts.
Transcript
00:00You mentioned the Epstein files there, something that's just not going away, is it, Gemma?
00:05But what do these documents reveal and why now?
00:11Why are we seeing the birthday book essentially being released?
00:14Yeah, we're seeing them now because last month the House Oversight Committee,
00:19they issued a legal summons to the Epstein estate to hand over much more documentation
00:24and the lawyers sent these documents.
00:28So they are redacted still, you know, there are certain names that are blurred out, sorry, blackened out.
00:35There are faces that have been, you know, blackened out as well.
00:38So they're still not the full documents, but, you know, it's what people have been asking for.
00:46This is the birthday book.
00:48It was compiled by Ghislaine Maxwell and given to Epstein on his 50th birthday.
00:53And it's a collection of messages from friends, acquaintances, people that he knew.
00:59Obviously, Trump allegedly offered this message that has gone in the book.
01:06The final line of it, which says,
01:09A pal is a wonderful thing.
01:10Happy birthday and may every day be another wonderful secret.
01:13Which is quite an intriguing thing to write, irrespective of who's written it.
01:20Why would a day be a wonderful secret?
01:22Also, you have Lord Mandelson, who is the current UK ambassador to Washington.
01:27He's been in politics for a very long time.
01:29And he called Mandelson, allegedly called Epstein, sorry, his best pal in a note that was allegedly written by him.
01:40Called him mysterious as well.
01:41This mysterious man who parachuted into my life.
01:44Bill Clinton, a message allegedly from Bill Clinton, noted Epstein's childlike curiosity and drive to make a difference.
01:52Now, what's been most interesting, and people I think were looking out for this, there's no apparent messages from Prince Andrew, who would obviously have been, you know, he's been such a focal point of anything to do with Jeffrey Epstein.
02:05But there are entries from an unidentified woman in the book who thanked Epstein for meeting the Prince, Bill Clinton and Trump, and said that thanks to him, she had seen the private quarters of Buckingham Palace and sat on the Queen of England's throne.
02:23So the tentacles of this book keep getting further and further, and their reach is quite extraordinary.
