00:00The Learning Skills and Employment Open Day was held in the Council Chamber here at City Hall in Sunderland City Centre.
00:08With 30 stalls, the day included the chance to access over 75 courses funded via Sunderland City Council's Adult Skills Fund,
00:16as well as giving people the opportunity to meet employers and find out about a range of job opportunities.
00:23Councillor Michael Butler, Sunderland City Council's Cabinet Member for Children's Services, spoke on the importance of hosting events like this.
00:32Well, hopefully across the city, we're really seeing some significant development across the whole region.
00:40But we need the people with the skills to carry out some of those things.
00:44And today we've seen the HICSA site being over there and looked at that and that's absolutely ramp packed with local people, residents, young people.
00:55And that's what we want to promote here, but not just in the construction industry, but in health care and everything you can think of.
01:02We want a vast array of options for people.
01:05So you've got your catering, you've got your health and social care, you've got your construction skills.
01:10So there really is something for everyone. I would encourage everyone to come along and say what options they have.
01:18Well, first and foremost, we want to benefit local people.
01:22And again, I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't put out there that young people, the youth of today.
01:29We want options for them coming through to hopefully remain in the city as they move on to their professional jobs,
01:35because now we have things to keep people here who are in the higher and the professional roles.
01:41I'm sure you're aware I'm leading the childhood poverty strategy and this fits in really, really well with that,
01:48because if there's one way out of poverty, we know that's education and well-paid employment.
01:53I mentioned the HICSA site just over the river in the Southwick Ward that I represent.
01:58A lot of these people could go on to go in there to complete apprenticeships and building the homes and infrastructure of the future of the city.
02:08There's a lot, there's too many to mention, but we are really big on getting people into apprenticeships.
02:16This is only one of them things we, you know, we have funded this through the adult skills board as well.
02:23We've just had a big change.
02:25We've had a paper come to cabinet, which sets out a lot of those, which people can read.
02:30Again, I will allude to the HICSA site because we're very, very proud of that.
02:35We encourage people into obviously college education partnership,
02:40North East have been front and centre of that.
02:43We love that and we're really, really proud to be delivering.
02:47Yeah, so we have a dedicated team, the learning and skills team,
02:51which I would encourage everyone to get in touch with if they have any queries
02:55and they'll be only too happy to help.
