00:00Unphased Sébastien Le Corneau seemingly distanced himself from François Bayrou's downfall.
00:07Perhaps deep down, he knew he'd be the one to step in,
00:11becoming the fifth prime minister in just two years.
00:14At 39, he'd long been tipped for the role.
00:18It was in fact in 2019, during the aftermath of the yellow vest crisis,
00:24that he first caught Emmanuel Macron's eye.
00:27To help the president bounce back, Le Corneau suggested the Grand Debate,
00:32a nationwide consultation inviting citizens to town hall meetings.
00:36Coming from the right, he quickly built a reputation as one of Macron's most trusted allies,
00:42a status now confirmed in the middle of a political storm.
00:47An appearance with the far right's Marine Le Pen last year made headlines.
00:51He also hasn't alienated the socialists,
00:53despite roots in the former Conservative Union for a Popular Movement.
00:57Archived footage from 2005 shows him at just 19,
01:01the youngest parliamentary assistant,
01:03working for the former deputy of the French Parliament.
01:07Everyone in the National Assembly knew Sébastien.
01:12While certain assistants were known for being a bit frivolous,
01:15he was known as a friendly and intelligent young man.
01:18At the time, Bruno Le Maire ran the department.
01:23When he became minister in 2008,
01:25he brought along a young Le Corneau armed with just a law degree.
01:30The two have remained close ever since,
01:32from the UMP primary in 2016
01:34to their eventual backing of the now president.
01:38In 2014, at just 27,
01:41Le Corneau was elected the mayor of a small town in Normandy.
01:45I'm not really a soldier type.
01:49I'm more interested in work that people care about.
01:52Three years later,
01:53he broke away from former Prime Minister François Fillon
01:56after a political and financial scandal.
01:58It was then he threw his support behind Macron.
02:01Since 2017, he's been part of every government,
02:04most recently as Minister of Armed Forces,
02:07defending the defence budget tooth and nail.
02:12We can see a smile despite the camouflage.
02:14Sebastian Le Corneau calls himself a lover of consensus
02:20and a fan of impossible missions.
02:22Words that will soon be put to the test.
