00:00the pass blocking was the big story all offseason but i actually want to start with the run block
00:03because this was a game a lot of people myself included came out and said they're gonna run the
00:07ball and you know it's raining and it's it's it's uh the first game of the year and they struggled
00:12they struggled to run the football kind of went away from it late what did you see in what was
00:18supposed to be a strength of this unit you look at the group they have up front there's supposed
00:21to be a strong run blocking line where did that not translate yeah i i would agree on that sentiment
00:27you know i was at the pre-game show i was very heavy like they're gonna come out run the football
00:31three great backs you know it just kind of all aligned the weather everything you know young
00:38two rookies on the o-line uh you know max crosby i'm like they're gonna run the football and they're
00:44gonna have success running i believe that i think i said 40 runs on my show yeah that's what i thought
00:49i thought they probably would have ran it you know 40 times and thrown it maybe 30 25 and uh it was
00:55complete opposite so uh you know i kind of from some of the notes it just looked like
01:02they were disconnected in the run game and what i mean by that is not that there was tons of blown
01:08assignments there definitely was some blown assignments i thought um but you know when
01:14you're working on a double team right like it's not as easy as just like two guys versus one like guys
01:20defeat double teams all the time if the o-line's not connected you know we we preach a lot you know
01:26and i assume they're teaching similar things you know you want to be hip to hip shoulder to shoulder
01:30and that kind of creates a forklift wedge to get that guy out of there so you know some of those
01:36double teams you know especially on the left side which is disappointing but also
01:42you know i hate saying you know you expect rookies to make up or mess up because that's not the
01:50case this is the nfl and you can't afford that and look once you're out you're not a rookie anymore
01:54like once you're playing like i i remember bill saying that to me like you're not a rookie anymore
01:59like you're a starter now um and so i i definitely thought that on the left side
02:05and granted it's two rookies you know and they'll get better and they'll work together more and
02:10you know i think there was a lot of movement on the o-line during training camp and and i never
02:19think that's good and now that was part of just the situation this football team's in right now
02:25you don't have you know i don't know if you looked at it said these are our five starters right away
02:30uh and part of that isn't you know vrabel's fault like the roster was what it was when he took over
02:36right and and that's previous regimes going back for a long time you know i mean you got
02:42one o-lineman that stuck around since 2020s it's not that's not great for development of a team so
02:49um you know that is what it is just we talked a little bit too you know a big adage of the line
02:57is take care of the down guy right take care of the d lineman and what that means is if you do that it
03:04will probably create a positive play but that might be two three yards that won't be the four
03:09to eight yard runs you've got to block those linebackers so that was something i saw like a
03:14lot of times like they get stuck on those down guys and they weren't getting great movement to begin
03:18with with those down guys and then they're not getting off on the linebackers and that's where you
03:23see these three two yard runs and we always said for an efficient run game you know it had to be four
03:29yards average a carry and that was you know we had a grade sheet and you know all these stats and and
03:35you know that was one i always looked at we took a lot of pride in the running game and uh you know
03:41and i think people kind of sent me stuff on twitter like why did we get away from the run game blah blah
03:46blah all this stuff and i think that had a lot to do with it as a coordinator when you're sitting there
03:51and it's like all right it's first and ten if i call this run is it going to be second at eight
03:55that's not great position you know that's not there's not that much difference second and six
03:59is a lot different than second and eight you know and um so i think that um that was kind of something
04:08you know really on the run game you know was a little disappointing your only explosive real run
04:13was that third and one where they kind of lined up in a fake tush but that was pretty cool that was a
04:18great great play design you know good little gadget give it to a playmaker in space get them around the
04:24edge you know but that that it's a gadget run right and you know when a lot of their core runs
04:30you know that i saw whether it would be gap things like that they just they just weren't connected they
04:35weren't getting great movement and you know i mean look you got to give your hat and the flowers to
04:40the raiders like they did a great job definitely had some movement on the d-line that i saw cause some
04:45problems you know um you know whether it was like a one-man stun or you know a lot of times you'll see
04:51like the strong side slant in linebacker plays over the top those are that's tough uh especially
04:57in week one i know we we struggled at that um a lot we saw it a lot in the preseason though and
05:04that would you know help us i'll never forget we played the saints in the preseason one year and me
05:09shaq missed one of those calls and movement up front and bill let us have it same thing in houston
05:16one year in the preseason so you know for as much as they say the preseason is helpful it is helpful
05:20seeing stuff like that but um you know just i was disappointed in the run game like i think
05:27many people are this morning so the step forward just based off what you said yeah sounds to me more
05:33like it's a continuity thing a chemistry thing i think so and uh as opposed to a schematic issue and
05:40the like that not designed right yeah i mean look everyone runs very similar plays in the nfl like
05:47nobody's really reinventing the wheel especially in the run game and you know i i can say i can speak
05:52to this from my early to my late part of the career early career you knew who the starting
05:58offensive line was especially inside like you know granted we had like you know nate leave trent come in
06:04but like really inside it was shaq you know or joe me shaq right so working with those guys every day
06:12every down and then you had a guy like ted cares who had been there years like it was the seamless
06:17transition if ted came in you know and uh and ted obviously is a great player he's gone on to have
06:23a great career at cincinnati like he just needed that opportunity he wasn't gonna play for us you know
06:28and that's what happened so you know and i think later in my career when you look at it like it was like
06:3520 uh 22 i played with a lot of guards 23 i played with so many that's hard it's hard when
06:41you're not getting those reps with guys you know it's it's not an excuse it's just hard like
06:47i knew how shaq was going to react if this happened i knew how joe was going to react when this happened
06:52and they knew how i was going to react when something happened and that's what makes a successful
06:58offensive line and um so you know hopefully that builds and they grow and they kind of get these
07:05guys in and like these are our five and this is what we're doing and look there will obviously be
07:10changes at some point whether it be injuries or you know move wilson inside to center or brown to center
07:18however they decide to do it whatever they decide to do to you know if they think there's improvement
07:24there but you know we'll just see what happens we always heard that the dante skarnecki idiom five uh
07:30five guys with the same set of eyes yes and everybody's seeing it the same way and to your
07:34point earlier like in training camp when you move it around i get you want to find the right group but you
07:38lose some of that yeah and so now they're going to have to come back and and get that in the run game
07:42and in the past game which i didn't think was bad big picture i think their biggest miscues were in
07:49the biggest moments yes which killed them obviously a lot of attention on will campbell
07:55top draft pick was i think he was credited for two sacks but there's a lot of context missing there
08:02the first one was a play where drake may steps up in the pie i think it was the first one if i
08:07ever right yes drake may steps up in the pocket right and tyree wilson's able to come off that was
08:12in the third quarter yeah so third quarter you know will campbell had his guy he went inside he stoned
08:18him you know drake had pressure i believe from wilson at the left guard and he had his you know
08:25his only escape lane was to go right there uh and that's something drake can do to help you know he
08:30can learn that um you know people talk about like movement out of quarterbacks i don't think anybody
08:37navigated a pocket like tom brady now and it wasn't running out doing all these things now granted drake
08:43has some of that skill set but you know it's knowing how to mitigate problems at the quarterback
08:49position and helping out your o-line um and you know he'll learn to do that like sometimes it's one
08:57step this way one step this way it's not three steps forward you know and so he'll learn to do
09:02that he'll get better at that but that was the one uh in the third quarter um and then really
09:10the strip sack yeah which we talked a little bit about
09:15again this is where i would hate to make assumptions um because you don't know the play
09:20call and you know you want to break down the film you want to give the best answer but without knowing
09:26it it's hard to put blame on one person or the other so what i saw in my opinion it looked like a chip
09:32and that's a called play called protection system you know and the tackle is uh expecting that help
09:40from a running back um now i can remember in 18 with trent when trent was playing some of his best
09:47football he was not a fan of the chip like he just didn't want it because it messed up his old rhythm
09:51his old changed his past set you know and that was something you know he kind of went back and forth
09:58with on the coaches and i kind of understood it because if you don't expect any help at any time
10:04you will never be let down like it's only your fault versus you know if you expect help and that
10:10can change right like that was a clear chip but just so everyone understands you call a chip protection
10:15if the running backs responsibility comes you're not getting any chip help so that can you know also
10:21affect the tackle too you know especially a young one so kind of how i saw it looked like there should
10:28have been a chip didn't get a great trip from monday you know and that puts the tackle at a very bad
10:34disadvantage um if not if there was not a chip called it looks like monday was trying to afford help
10:41which running backs will do um and if that's the case and obviously that's more on will um you know and
10:50for the most part i didn't come away thinking that the pass block lost them the game i thought there
10:58was other areas from an offensive standpoint that really affected the game versus like man they
11:04couldn't pass block you know i i wasn't i was more disappointed in the run game performance than i was
11:11the pass blocking
