00:00this is now the patriots experience has become the patriots experience as a fan for the last
00:05several years this team continues to embarrass themselves at home they lose at home good teams
00:12win at home good teams have a home field advantage this team sucks at home that's the truth it's been
00:20a bad few years at gillette stadium told you the last exciting thing there i think was like messy
00:25or a taylor swift concert and hasn't been the football team we welcome in david andrews who
00:32joins us for his first in-season appearance it's a good transition david great to see you
00:36how the last few years been in foxborough well yeah hearing you say that i'm like son of a gun
00:43because i was a part of a lot of that but uh zoe you had to call in sick today after watching that
00:48game yesterday you like the dad you like the dad from friday night lights you make me sick
00:55watching you play football he's the one with the nose thing on right the piece of tape
01:02he broke his nose yeah tim mcgraw yeah uh yeah it was a tough game um i suck at analyzing the game too
01:12because what i said on pregame went out the window very fast what did you say on pregame
01:16you know i i i was high on the team i was excited for the team uh told uh jim murray i couldn't wait
01:24to hear how sad felger and mas were when they won so now i'm gonna have to eat that
01:30that stinks uh you know and look i thought they would come out run the ball very efficiently i thought
01:38that would be a strength of this team um and to me that was the most disappointing part of the game
01:45you know watching it i got up early this morning watched it and that was the most i didn't think
01:50the pass protection let the team down i thought the run game let the team down uh and you know i had
01:56a lot of people asking like you know why why do they go away from the run well they go away from
02:01the run when you're only averaging three yards carry it's not an efficient play second and eight
02:06second and seven that doesn't put you in a very favorable position uh and then obviously you get down
02:12in the game and that's what happens you go away from it as a play caller because you're sitting
02:16there and you're like man we're not doing this and and josh is seeing the same thing the pictures on
02:22the sideline of what i watched this morning being like this isn't we're not doing what we need to do
02:27in the run game i can't just keep going to this well like if they had been efficient in the run game
02:32they would have gone well you know you look at your one big explosive run was on that uh third and
02:39one kind of gadget play to henderson you know and you know that was the disappointing part to me as
02:45the offensive line o lineman in me watching the game like the weather the team the situation like
02:53i thought the line would have a great day running the football it never happens in reverse when an
03:01offensive coordinator says the passing plays are inefficient plays because they were inefficient
03:08in a lot of ways in the passing game yesterday as well yeah but but a play caller never does that
03:13right isn't the mentality well the runs not working we got to keep throwing because the potential gains
03:17in the passing game yeah i mean are always bigger right you hit one big play and it flips your whole
03:23day it's the gamble i mean right i thought booty was the best player on the field offensively yesterday
03:28i would agree with that 108 yards or whatever it was like yeah that's great production from him
03:33and you know and i you did see some of the some of the wealth shared um you know i just i just thought
03:42there were some things we tried to do obviously they have a good pass rush and you try to afford
03:48more people to help with that pass rush now that limits who's out the route you know so it's a double
03:54edged sword you want to get five people out in the route well now you gotta you could have a field day
04:00up front so um you know it was tough i i just me watching the game from an o-line perspective
04:07offensive perspective i wasn't that disappointed in the pass blocking more disappointed in the run game
04:14that was because i just thought that was going to be a strength of this team as an alignment it is 10
04:19times easier to run block than it is the pass block uh saw a lot of good things in the run game in
04:26the preseason um you know i think looking at the left side in the run game the two rookies they
04:33look like two rookies in some of the run plays i thought uh you know which i don't want to say is
04:39expected it can't be expected for rookies that's i hate that notion that like oh he's a rookie he's okay
04:45he'll figure it out like yeah that is true but like this is the nfl and it can't be expected or okay
04:53for anyone to mess up no matter if you're tom brady or a rookie and um you know so hopefully they'll
05:00get that ironed out um you know and and improve this that's what you're hoping on right now so
05:06what was your worst part is you never you never saw the line of scrimmage move i i put that down in
05:11my okay like i said run game not a lot of movement and i know when the backs are ping-ponging
05:15just to get back to the line of scrimmage like gibson's a hard runner you know what i saw is
05:21you always say there's old out you know adage and no line play take care of the down guys
05:27sometimes that could be seen as a cop out for an o-lineman like yeah i took care of the down guy
05:32but when you say that you're hoping you drive that d lineman six yards down the field and dump him on a
05:38double team and it's like then now he's in the linebacker's lap you might have not blocked the
05:42linebacker it's still going to be a really good play but when you're not moving those guys and
05:47maybe you're taking care of them but you're not getting the linebacker that's where you see the
05:51two three yard runs uh and then obviously there was some issues on some movement saw some of that
05:57where just you just didn't create you didn't move the line of scrimmage and and bill always would say
06:02you know you guys just want to watch the end zone tape as an alignment which you know you did but like
06:07go watch the sideline in the run game you can tell you can't tell a lot about technique
06:12and other things like that but you can tell who won the game yeah from the sideline because you're
06:16resetting the line of scrimmage so that that was a big thing not a lot of movement up front your
06:21thoughts on drake may's day yeah uh i just didn't think he looked comfortable um even when there was
06:29clean pockets you know early in the game he missed a lot of throws i thought and some of that was some
06:36drops like the drop by pop over the middle of you know um he just didn't he didn't look comfortable
06:42and i don't know if that was him confident in what he wanted to do or if he was thinking too much or
06:50whatever and and there's a fine line of cutting it loose and going play and not making dumb mistakes
06:56and you can't be scared to make those mistakes um you know i've never played quarterback so i you know i
07:03don't really know what i'm talking about but there's translations like if you're up there as
07:07an alignment you're scared to mess up you're not going to come off the ball like so translate that
07:13to the quarterback if you're scared to throw an interception or make a mistake you know it can
07:18inhibit what you're trying to do and you know i hope he just cuts it loose like cut it loose man
07:25like go out there and cut loose play football you know and and let the chips you know and saying that
07:31you got to be smart you can't just throw crazy passes all game but you know i just he didn't
07:37look comfortable he didn't look comfortable in the pocket at times and maybe some of his decision
07:42making um you know it just it just looked off to me can you cut it loose in a josh mcdaniels offense
07:50i think so i mean you're not going to sit here and say tom brady didn't cut it loose
07:54but he was pretty structured wasn't he yeah but you can you can still play free
08:01in this within the system that's what i'm saying it's not every play doesn't have to be
08:06backyard football running around i heard someone say that the other day like
08:10are coming in listening to hardy and them this morning some guy called in and was like
08:15you know i want to see his improv you can't script improv there's no playing football it's like hey
08:21just drop back and run around and throw it you know no team does that even with the lamar jackson's
08:26josh allen's like those plays come up and drake has a lot of those skills to be able to do that
08:32kind of stuff but like those aren't scripted plays and you can't you can't live off those plays um
08:39but to say you can't cut it loose in josh's offense i think that's a wild statement what i mean by cut
08:45it loose is like be confident what you're doing you know hit your back foot know where you're going
08:50with the ball throw the ball read the defense whatever it is like i just think that's now
08:56you're trying to put blame on something else saying oh we can't cut it loose in this offense like
09:00try cut it loose in van pelt's offense like it doesn't matter like it's playing within the system
09:07being confident within the system that's where i think you think about cutting it loose in my mind
09:13can you maybe blend the system though like we talked i remember in the summer about how
09:16you played to cam newton strengths because you could run the football and then mac jones's strengths
09:21or tom strengths and drake obviously is a lot more mobile than both tom and mac are as well so like
09:26with this offense can you do something like that where you're using sort of the athletic ability that
09:31drake may has and blending that with some of the stuff that you're talking about as well well i mean
09:35yeah you want to see those rollout passes right yeah in space all that stuff that's great but when
09:40you're not running the football efficiently a rollout ain't worth you know anything because the dn's
09:46not worried about anything you're not worried about going to chase the run so you do that with like
09:51max crosby over there and drake you want to probably roll to his right right fake the run to the left
09:57roll to his right he's a right-handed passer but when max crosby's not too scared of the run
10:02he's gonna tee off yeah like what like what are we talking about here so everything works together
10:08as offensive football and when you're not having success really in a lot of areas like it's hard
10:16to get things going you know it's hard and uh i think you know i'm biased i think it starts in the
10:22run game you you're going to create your big plays through play action being ahead of the downs you know
10:28head of the sticks uh that's where you're going to create your big plays it's not you know first and
10:3510 chuck one up deep so you know it's hard to get guys open in the nfl you get guys open by the play
10:41action you look at some of the big plays the raiders had that was play action runs and you create the
10:46levels between the linebackers and safeties and different things like that but if they don't
10:50respect your run game if they don't respect the run game yeah it's over that's what that goes back
10:54to the like roll out getting them out of the pocket sometimes i think
10:58you
