00:00What strikes you at first glance is the visual and narrative style adopted by X-Men: First Class, or First Class in its original version.
00:06It borders on kitsch, but manages to never go beyond it, which ends up giving the universe a new and beautiful identity.
00:13The story takes place in the 60s, and Matthew Vaughn will take advantage of this to bring out his references, giving it this very British touch,
00:20which feels like a James Bond episode with Sean Connery.
00:23This is the inspiration that Michael Fassbender uses to give his tape a composure and class that could almost make you forget Ian McKellane's version.
00:31But I say almost.
00:33Same for the antagonist, Kevin Bacon may have the name of a piece of art, but he's still incredibly convincing.
00:39We firmly believe in his power, and the character does not rely on that alone.
00:43He seduces with a presence, an entourage and an attitude which gives him a lot of depth.
00:48No, but look at this, it's not even James Bond anymore, it's almost Austin Powers.
00:53The film is based on the premise that Sebastian Shaw is behind the Cuban Missile Crisis, a high point of the Cold War.
01:00And this way of anchoring the mutants in human conflicts that existed gives the film real credibility.
01:05X-Men, since its first installment, has always been an allegory of American history.
01:09The difference here is that mutants aren't just a minority doing their best to fit in with humanity,
01:13but revolutionaries who are very politically engaged and who directly influence conflicts between different countries.
01:19The film is therefore forced to deconstruct the characters we know in order to make them more human and more vulnerable.
01:25Magneto is much more fatalistic and unrestrained in his actions.
01:28Charles, on the other hand, is much more extroverted, revealing flaws that we wouldn't have imagined.
01:33His empathy is more communicative, particularly through the relationship he has with Eric.
01:37I think of a scene where he relieves him of a suffering that is eating away at him,
01:40where it allows him to be our man, much more at peace with himself.
01:44Bringing mysticism into the equation was also a risk that paid off.
01:46This character, who we knew mainly for his physical prowess and his arrogance, is shown here in a total opposite.
01:52Much more vulnerable, lost between her desire to be like everyone else
01:56and her frustration at not being able to proudly display herself without fear of being judged.
02:00She will end up accepting herself thanks to Eric's advice which will make her understand the extraordinary being that she is.
02:05Besides, in this scene, when she flirts with him,
02:08we have the right to a cameo from the first interpreter of Mystique, Rebecca Rominge,
02:12who will therefore be replaced by Jennifer Lawrence.
02:14That being said, I would now like to focus on the central character of the film,
02:18Eric Lencher and his transformation into a tape recorder.
02:21The introduction repeats almost shot by shot the intro of the first film,
02:24except here we see what happens after young Eric bends this barrier.
02:28He is brought into the office of Klaus Schmidt, later known as Sebastian Shaw,
02:33and the latter asks him to start again by moving a piece.
02:36The decor is partially revealed, it appears as an ordinary office.
02:39But when Eric can't get the room moving,
02:42Schmidt decides to use more radical methods.
02:44From then on, the other part of the decor appears as a threat.
02:47As if to say that it won't end well,
02:49and indeed, Eric's mother is killed, because he failed to move that piece.
02:53Only hatred and anger allow him to enjoy his gifts,
02:56and this is what Charles will understand much later,
02:58teaching him to channel himself and control his power more calmly.
03:02But Charles will not be able to do much more.
03:04Eric suffers from a deep hatred towards humankind.
03:07A hatred he suffered as a Jew and a mutant.
03:09It is in accordance with Shaw's ideology.
03:11He will therefore symbolically succeed him in his quest,
03:14by assassinating him and stealing his crown.
03:16From there, the point of no return is crossed.
03:19Magneto is born, and the rivalry with his friend, his brother in arms, is only just beginning.
03:23Here we go!
