00:00This film was originally supposed to be a sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but Darren Aronofsky, who was originally scheduled to direct it, renamed it The Wolverine, so as not to directly give it the bad reputation of its predecessor.
00:12Aronofsky will leave the project after several weeks of filming, and James Mongold will take over for this new spin-off, which takes place 7 years after the events of X-Men: The Last Stand,
00:21and which sees Logan living on the fringes of society, more alone than ever and still not recovered from Jean's death, until he meets Yuko, who invites him to come to Japan at Yashida's request,
00:31a Japanese officer whom Wolverine saved in 1945 during the bombing of Nagasaki, and who would like to say goodbye to him on his deathbed.
00:38But obviously, once there, he will realize that his old friend's intentions are quite different.
00:43So we are on a spin-off, but also on an indirect sequel to the third opus.
00:47James Mongold is a director I really like. He has a real vision, a love of cinema that shines through in his work.
00:53We feel a real work of editing here, a desire to be sincere and to offer an identity to the film.
00:58What is interesting to note is this contrast between Wolverine, the bestial being par excellence, and the gentleness of the environment in which he evolves, in this case Japan.
01:06It offers us quite a few beautiful moments, like the funeral and its action scene which continues on the roof of a train, and which is reminiscent of the first Mission Impossible.
01:13The fight between Hiroyuki Sanada is also visually polished, and where our dear mutant doesn't hesitate to throw in a few punchlines, even though they are in difficulty.
01:21What monstrous creature are you? I am Wolverine.
01:26Because that's where the film's other strong point lies, which is to make Wolverine vulnerable.
01:30So he keeps this kamikaze side in his fights, but the blows he takes, he feels them pass for the first time.
01:35It's just a shame that an inconsistency comes along to spoil this development, because, well, when he gets his claws out, he should have sores on his hands.
01:42And unfortunately, that is not the case.
01:44Now, while all these strengths may exist, I personally find this film to be a failure.
01:48It suffers from a huge soft underbelly, but is filled by a romance, again, between Wolverine and another character.
01:55He's definitely a real heartbreaker.
01:56But the real concern is that the story and the environment in which it takes place is relatively serious and tangible, if I can use that term.
02:03Let's just say it's easy to believe, but the climax will completely ruin that.
02:07Suddenly we are presented with a somewhat futuristic setting that is completely out of place, the fight with a sort of giant samurai robot, where we go into the most absolute kitsch,
02:15and the ending, where suddenly it's the old soldier who sticks his head out of the robot in...
02:19We're supposed to be super invested at that point.
02:22But personally, it just made me laugh a lot, the situation and the execution are so non-hardcore, and once again completely at odds with the seriousness of the story up to that point.
02:30This last part completely took me out of the film, so much so that I prefer Origins, which at least has the merit of maintaining a certain consistency in mediocrity.
