00:00A detective teams up with a young Edgar Allan Poe to unravel a mystery plaguing a military academy.
00:08Some of its cadet students are turning up not only murdered, but mutilated,
00:13with organs from their bodies missing, leading us through a plot where everyone is a suspect
00:18until we discover the truth that comes with a shocking and dark final twist.
00:24Her story today begins when a delegation from the nearby military academy
00:28arrives at the remote home of Detective Landor to take him there, since the superintendent wants to see him,
00:34and although Landor does not seem comfortable with this, in the end he agrees to go.
00:39The reason for this situation is that the night before,
00:42one of the academy cadets was found hanged in the surrounding area,
00:45and if that were not shocking enough news, the body's heart had also been stolen in the academy hospital ward,
00:51and since he was the renowned detective who was now this academy's agent,
00:55they wanted Landor to find out who had been the culprit.
00:58After agreeing, Landor goes to see the body and speak with the academy's doctor who performed the autopsy,
01:05who tells him that it does not require much knowledge to remove a heart in the way it was done,
01:09but what was needed was newspaper, plenty of ice, and rather cold conditions to preserve it well.
01:14One last condition for this job was that Landor had to keep his entire investigation secret
01:20because some politicians wanted to close the academy and any problem within it would be taken as an excuse to do so.
01:27Having said and accepted all that, Landor questions the young man who found Fry's body,
01:32who says he heard a noise he thought was an animal, but when he got closer, he saw that it was Fry dead,
01:37and he noticed that he had the rope around his neck but was in a position where his feet touched the floor,
01:41and it looked as if he were sitting on an invisible chair.
01:45Knowing this, Landor returns to the body and notices that the rope marks on his neck and some blisters on his hands
01:51indicate that he tried to free himself from the rope,
01:54which suggests that he was hanged and it was not a suicide as the academy believed.
01:59The doctor comes to ask what they will do with the body, and Landor points out two things.
02:04Fry's skull has a contusion in the back, and in one of his hands, he was holding a piece of paper, an important clue.
02:10Returning to the area where the body was found, Landor is approached by Edgar Allan Poe, a cadet of the academy,
02:17who tells the detective that he believes all of this was done by a poet.
02:21Landor talks with another young man from the academy who was guarding the hospital when someone removed Fry's body from the corpse,
02:28and this boy says that at 2.30 in the morning, a superior arrived and relieved him from his post with strange things surrounding this incident.
02:35Help me reach 10 likes and 5 comments.
02:38Comment, the important thing is to get there.
02:42Help me reach 1,000 subscribers as we are about to achieve it.
02:46Thank you very much in advance. Let's continue.
02:50Due to the darkness of the night, he could not see the face of that superior.
02:54The latter did not identify himself by name as he should have,
02:58and his officer's uniform was missing an insignia on one shoulder.
03:01That night, Landor goes to drink at the local bar, where he meets Poe,
03:07whom he asks why he thinks the one who took Fry's heart is a poet,
03:11and Poe explains that a heart is a symbol.
03:14If one strips away all the meaning it has as a symbol,
03:17it is just another muscle or organ of the body, not much different from any other.
03:21It is just a piece of meat.
03:23But as a symbol, it has an entire meaning,
03:26and no one better than a poet to take advantage of that.
03:28Along with that, Poe tells Landor to investigate a cadet from the academy
03:33with the last name Lockbrook,
03:35who used to share a room with Fry until they had a fight,
03:38the reason for which was unknown.
03:41The next day, Landor interrogates this cadet,
03:44who explains that he did not fight with Fry.
03:46They simply went their separate ways,
03:48because Fry began to associate with those he himself called bad people.
03:52This cadet did not know who Fry meant by that,
03:56but assumed there were other cadets from the same academy
03:59and chose to distance himself from him.
04:02Along with them in the room was Cadet Stoddard,
04:04the last person to see Fry alive,
04:07and the cadet says he saw him the night he died.
04:10Fry asked him if there were any officers nearby,
04:13and when he asked Fry where he was going,
04:15Fry simply said it was a necessary matter.
04:18At the end of those interrogations,
04:21the officer who was with Landor received word
04:23that a cow and a sheep had been found killed
04:25and their hearts removed.
04:28Secretly, Landor meets with Poe and offers to work together.
04:32No one can know.
04:33This is the first condition.
04:34But also the first task Landor gives Poe
04:36is to find out who wrote and what was written in the note
04:39from which the piece of paper found in Fry's hand had come.
04:43That night, Poe meets with Landor to give him his conclusions.
04:46The note must have been enough to lure Fry to the place
04:50where he died, which means it was a trap.
04:52And according to Poe, it said,
04:54Don't be late, come quickly.
04:56Although that was only the ending.
04:58Landor takes the note and deduces that,
05:00in full, it said,
05:01I will be at the dock chain.
05:03See you there at 11.
05:04Don't be late, come see me.
05:07Poe says it couldn't have been a cadet who wrote the note
05:09because a cadet could meet Fry anywhere in the academy.
05:12There was no need to make him leave her
05:14if they wanted to meet,
05:16so it must have been a woman.
05:19This reminds Poe that the morning after Fry's death,
05:22he saw through a window of the academy
05:25a sad woman walking,
05:27whom he describes as the most beautiful woman
05:30he had ever seen,
05:32although he didn't know her name.
05:34The next day, Landor seems to discover something,
05:38and that's why he leaves a note for Poe
05:41asking him to meet at the academy's ice house.
05:44Poe arrives when Landor is already there,
05:47and she explains that this is the scene of the second crime,
05:51where they brought Fry's heart,
05:54since on the floor there was a marked circle
05:56and other shapes suggesting that some kind of ritual
05:59was carried out here.
06:01And this was the academy's ice house,
06:03which, if we remember what the doctor said,
06:06was needed to store Fry's heart in ice.
06:09Landor and Poe go to a professor the former knew,
06:14to whom they show a drawing he made of the ice house symbol.
06:18This professor recognizes it
06:20and says that a man who killed many women
06:23by accusing them of being witches
06:24described a ritual with that symbol,
06:28but the book where he did so was destroyed,
06:31although he left a couple of copies,
06:33which, however, have almost become the life goal
06:37of occult followers to find,
06:40showing how difficult it was to come across one of them.
06:43Landor asks why,
06:45and the professor says that supposedly
06:47that ritual led you to immortality,
06:50and among the things required
06:52is the heart of a hanged man.
06:54The new task Landor gives Poe
06:57is to find out which cadet of the academy
07:00is interested in the occult.
07:03Poe does his task and approaches Artemis,
07:05who turns out to be a cadet of the academy,
07:09but also the doctor's son.
07:12Poe goes to Landor's house to tell him this,
07:15but finds a huge bookshelf,
07:17among which he sees one of poetry,
07:20and he tells Landor that when he first met him,
07:23he said he didn't read poetry,
07:25but here he had a book about it.
07:28Landor says that book actually belonged
07:30to his daughter Maddie and not to him.
07:33Poe asks about the young woman,
07:35and Landor says that she ran away
07:37with someone he only knew in passing
07:39and thought it unlikely that the girl would return.
07:42Poe says that means they are both alone in the world,
07:46because he also had lost his mother 20 years ago,
07:49but, according to Poe,
07:51he communicated with her in his dreams.
07:54Poe meets up with Artemis and his friends,
07:57other cadets,
07:58in a hidden section of the bar
08:00to drink and play there.
08:02At that moment,
08:03we see Bollinger,
08:05another cadet,
08:06who, for some reason,
08:07looks badly and greatly bothers Poe.
08:10But also,
08:11in the conversation between cadets,
08:13we found out that Fry seemed to be in love
08:15with Artemis' sister.
08:17That same night,
08:18in his home,
08:20Landor wakes up having a vision of Maddie,
08:22and crying when he realizes that
08:24it is just that,
08:25a vision.
08:26The morning after that,
08:28Fry's funeral takes place,
08:30after which Fry's mother approaches Landor
08:32and gives him Fry's diary.
08:34Landor is surprised,
08:35because no diary was listed among Fry's belongings
08:38when his things were checked.
08:40The mother of the dead cadet
08:41tells him that Bollinger,
08:43that other cadet,
08:45took the diary as soon as he found out
08:47what had happened to Fry
08:48and sent it to her,
08:50saying that he thought,
08:51as Fry's mother,
08:52she should keep it.
08:53But now that she knew the Academy leaders
08:55trusted him,
08:57Landor,
08:58with the investigation of Fry's death,
09:00this mother thought it best for Landor to have it.
09:02Perhaps it could help him in the investigation,
09:05since she didn't understand the diary anyway,
09:07as it only had strange numbers and letters
09:09that, at least to her,
09:11made no sense.
09:12In that place,
09:14Landor also meets the doctor's wife,
09:16Artemis' mother,
09:17and meanwhile,
09:18Poe attends a gathering
09:19where he meets Leah,
09:21Artemis' sister,
09:21who, coincidentally,
09:23is the beautiful woman Poe saw the morning
09:25after Fry's death,
09:27with whom Poe ends up falling in love.
09:29At that same gathering,
09:31he recites poems to her
09:32under the gaze of Artemis,
09:34Ballinger,
09:35and other cadets.
09:36Leah excuses herself
09:37and leaves for another room,
09:39where Poe follows her
09:40and invites her to go out together
09:42to a cemetery,
09:43a rather strange date,
09:45but one that Leah finds interesting
09:46and accepts.
09:47The next day at his home,
09:49Landor puts some pages
09:50from Fry's diary in water
09:52and sticks them to his window,
09:54making the paper translucent
09:55and revealing clear writings.
09:58Poe meets Leah at the cemetery
09:59as they had arranged,
10:00and the young woman has an attack
10:02that makes her fall to the ground
10:03and convulse in the snow,
10:05this being epilepsy,
10:07from which she recovers
10:08after a while to Poe's fright.
10:10That night,
10:11while walking alone,
10:12Poe is attacked by Ballinger,
10:14who tells him to stay away from Leah.
10:16Right then,
10:17Landor comes across both young men
10:18and punches Ballinger,
10:20getting him off Poe.
10:21Ballinger escapes,
10:23and Poe says he did this
10:24because he is jealous
10:25that Leah prefers him.
10:28Landor takes Poe
10:28to the local bar,
10:30where Poe says that all his life
10:31everyone has made fun of him,
10:33but they don't know
10:34what he is capable of,
10:35and he promises Landor
10:36that one day
10:37he will write something about him
10:39that everyone will remember.
10:41Back at his home,
10:42Landor is woken early
10:44by one of the Academy officers
10:45who tells him
10:46that Ballinger has disappeared.
10:49A full search is ordered,
10:51and in the end,
10:51Ballinger is found
10:52hanging in the forest.
10:54The doctor performs the autopsy,
10:57stating that Ballinger
10:57is also missing his heart,
11:00but in his case,
11:01the extraction was done
11:02by someone else,
11:04which was evident
11:04because the cut
11:05was much less clean.
11:08Along with that,
11:09Ballinger was castrated.
11:11This news angers an officer,
11:12who reproaches Landor
11:14for still not finding
11:15the culprit of these crimes,
11:17but Landor assures them
11:18that they are getting
11:19closer and closer
11:20to doing so.
11:22The officers reveal
11:23that they suspect Poe
11:24because Poe had an argument
11:26with Fry the previous summer,
11:28something Poe never told Landor,
11:30who believed Poe and Fry
11:32had not known each other
11:33beyond recognizing each other
11:35from attending the same Academy.
11:37So in reality,
11:38the officers did not bring Landor
11:40to investigate the murderer
11:41as some kind of outsider,
11:44but rather,
11:44they were waiting for Landor
11:46to confirm that Poe
11:47was the killer
11:47and hand them the evidence
11:49to accuse him.
11:51Landor meets with Poe
11:52to ask him why he didn't tell him
11:54he had a fight with Fry
11:55and whether he killed him.
11:58Poe says that yes,
11:59he had an argument with Fry,
12:00but did not kill him.
12:02He says that if he killed
12:03everyone who bothered him
12:05and mocked him,
12:06the Academy would have fewer
12:07than a dozen cadets left,
12:09but clearly he did not do that.
12:12This is enough for Landor,
12:13who nevertheless tells him
12:15that if he lies to him
12:16and gets into trouble,
12:17he will do nothing to help him.
12:20Landor and Poe are invited
12:21to dinner at the doctor's house
12:23with his wife, Artemis,
12:25his son, and Leah, his daughter.
12:29At the table, things turn sour
12:30because Artemis begins to hint
12:32that Poe is guilty
12:33of some of the things
12:34that have been happening,
12:35which causes Artemis' mother
12:37to yell at him to be quiet,
12:39break some plates,
12:40and leave the table.
12:41The doctor invites Landor
12:43to continue talking
12:44in the study instead,
12:46much better than staying
12:47at the table
12:47where everything is chaos.
12:49And in the study,
12:50Landor asks him
12:51if his daughter is ill,
12:53something he noticed
12:54just by observing her
12:55while they ate together.
12:56The doctor replies yes,
12:58that since childhood,
13:00she has suffered
13:00from an illness
13:01that freezes her brain
13:02and shakes her like a rope.
13:05Artemis enters the study
13:06and tells them
13:07to go to the living room
13:08because Leah
13:09is going to play the piano.
13:11Both men go to the living room,
13:13but Artemis asks the doctor
13:14to play chess
13:15and, taking advantage
13:16of that distraction,
13:18Landor walks through the house,
13:20investigating the place,
13:21finding a jacket
13:22similar to that
13:23of an academy officer
13:24with traces of blood.
13:26But upon finding her,
13:28the doctor's wife
13:28appears excusing herself
13:30for what she did
13:30earlier at the table.
13:32In the living room,
13:33Poe listening to Leah
13:34play the piano
13:35tells her that he realized
13:36he would do anything for her.
13:39Landor and the doctor's wife
13:40return to the living room
13:41with the jacket.
13:42The woman asks her husband
13:43if he remembers
13:44when Artemis used to wear
13:46that jacket all around the house
13:47when he was a child.
13:48And the doctor replies yes,
13:50and also says that the jacket
13:52belonged to his brother,
13:53and it's the only thing
13:54he has to remember him by.
13:56Here we think that Artemis
13:58is cornered and screwed,
13:59but an academy officer
14:00arrives to report
14:01that another cadet
14:03has disappeared
14:03and in the morning,
14:05new groups are formed
14:05to go out and look for him.
14:07But before doing so,
14:09Landor tells the officers
14:10that he checked
14:11the missing cadet's bedroom
14:12and his clothes are not there,
14:15implying that he escaped
14:16and was not killed
14:17or anything like that.
14:19Said cadet was a friend
14:20of Fry and Ballinger,
14:21the two previous Arcanists,
14:23so surely he thought
14:24he would be the next victim,
14:26and before being killed,
14:27he escaped from the academy.
14:29The officers accept this,
14:31but ask Landor
14:32to already have a suspect,
14:34saying they should go
14:35right now for Artemis
14:36since they found
14:36the officer jacket
14:37of his uncle
14:38with blood on it.
14:40Landor says not yet,
14:41that there is not
14:42enough evidence for that
14:43and Artemis could deny everything,
14:45but he just needs
14:46a little more time
14:47to finish all this.
14:49We see Poe meet with Leon,
14:51and Landor return
14:52to the professor
14:52who told him about
14:53the ritual symbol
14:54found in the fridge,
14:55to whom he asks more
14:56about the man
14:57who performed immortality rituals
14:59and his books.
15:01Meanwhile,
15:02Poe tells Leon
15:02about a dream of his,
15:04in which at the end
15:04he asks her,
15:06do you remember you said
15:07you would do anything for me?
15:09Landor returned
15:10to the doctor's office
15:11where he finds
15:12one of the books
15:12about rituals
15:13that were very hard to find.
15:15The doctor pretends
15:16not to understand all this,
15:18but Landor shouts at him
15:20asking if Leon
15:20communicates with the dead,
15:22which makes the doctor
15:23confess that yes,
15:24as a doctor,
15:25a man of science,
15:26he tried in all ways
15:27he knew to heal her,
15:29but failed in all his attempts.
15:31Then Leon one day
15:32got up saying
15:33that in her dreams
15:34she met Leclerc,
15:35who wrote that book
15:36about rituals
15:37and who was also
15:38Leon's great,
15:39great grandfather.
15:40In parallel,
15:41we see Leon
15:42practicing a new ritual
15:43with Artemis
15:44as an assistant,
15:45but now with Poe
15:46as the sacrifice,
15:48which is why Leon
15:48earlier asked if Poe
15:49remembered saying
15:50he would do anything
15:51for her.
15:52Leanne asked Poe
15:53to be part of this ritual
15:54and he agreed
15:56out of love.
15:57Back with the doctor,
15:58he confesses
15:59that Leanne and Artemis
16:01took Fry's heart
16:02but both claimed
16:03they had not killed him
16:04and he agreed to hide this
16:06because he thought
16:07Leanne was getting better
16:08from her illness.
16:10Landor goes to
16:11the ritual site
16:12where he finds Artemis
16:13about to cut Poe's chest
16:15with Leanne and Artemis' mother
16:17also present
16:18right there at the place.
16:19Leanne explains
16:21what he deduced.
16:22According to him,
16:24Leanne lured Fry
16:25out of the academy
16:26with a note
16:27so that Ballinger
16:28would kill him
16:29because Ballinger,
16:30in love with Leanne,
16:31would do anything
16:32for her to heal.
16:34That didn't work
16:35and the ritual
16:35had to continue,
16:37now with Artemis
16:38killing Ballinger
16:38to try again.
16:40At that moment,
16:41the place starts
16:42to catch fire
16:43from some candles
16:44and Leanne struggles
16:45with Artemis
16:46while Leanne continues
16:47the ritual
16:48but some wood
16:49falls on Leanne
16:50and Artemis
16:51goes to help her.
16:53Meanwhile,
16:53Lander takes Poe
16:54out of there
16:55who was half paralyzed
16:56by some anesthesia
16:57or sedative
16:58they had given him
16:59to perform the ritual.
17:01Lander also takes out
17:02the mother
17:03of both young people
17:04just as the roof
17:05collapses from the fire
17:06and crushes Artemis
17:08and Leanne
17:08who die right there
17:09at the place.
17:11The next morning,
17:12an officer informs Lander
17:13that Poe will survive
17:15all the damage
17:15he suffered.
17:16The judge released
17:18the mother of Leanne
17:19and Artemis
17:19because he believed
17:20the woman had already
17:21suffered enough
17:22with the death
17:23of her two children.
17:24The doctor resigns
17:25from his position
17:26at the academy
17:27thus signaling
17:28that Lander's work
17:29here was finished.
17:31However,
17:32that's not all
17:32there is in this movie
17:33and let me tell you
17:34that here,
17:35entering the end of it,
17:36I also begin
17:37the explanation
17:38of everything
17:38that has really happened.
17:40Days later,
17:41Poe arrives at Lander's house
17:43showing that his wounds
17:44have healed
17:45but tells him
17:46that in his dreams
17:47while sleeping
17:47and recovering
17:48he had a revelation
17:50of the truth
17:50about all this.
17:52Poe first shows
17:53that he realized
17:54the note Fry had
17:55in his hand
17:56was written by Lander
17:57which Poe knew
17:58by comparing that note
17:59from Fry
18:00with the one Lander
18:01wrote to him before
18:02to meet secretly.
18:04Poe says everything
18:05has to do with Maddie,
18:06Lander's daughter.
18:08Lander himself
18:09had said that Maddie
18:09ran away with someone else
18:11but Poe met Patsy
18:12a woman who worked
18:13at the local bar
18:14serving drinks
18:15and with whom Lander
18:16had a relationship
18:17whom Poe asked about Maddie
18:19and who told him
18:20the truth of her story.
18:22One night,
18:22Maddie was abused
18:23by three cadets
18:24from the academy
18:25and when she managed
18:27to escape
18:27she returned to Landor
18:29to whom she told
18:30everything that had happened
18:32also showing him
18:33a pendant she had taken
18:35from one of her abusers.
18:37The pendant was Fry's
18:38with the initials LF
18:40written on it
18:41which corresponded
18:42to Leroy Fry.
18:44Because of this,
18:45one day Maddie ran away
18:47from the house
18:47to a cliff
18:48where she threw herself
18:50into the void
18:50smiling and assuring
18:52her father
18:53that everything
18:53would be fine.
18:55In revenge for this,
18:57Landor wrote a note
18:58to Fry
18:58to get him expelled
19:00from the academy
19:01making him believe
19:02it was Patsy
19:03who wrote it.
19:04When Landor saw Fry alone
19:06he killed him
19:07trying to hang him.
19:09However,
19:10before he could
19:11leave him hanging
19:11in the air,
19:12the cadet
19:13who was on watch
19:14that night
19:14and who thought
19:15he heard an animal
19:16approached
19:17and Landor
19:18had to escape
19:19to avoid being seen.
19:21That is why
19:22the cadet
19:23found Fry hanged
19:24but with his feet
19:25on the ground
19:26as if he were sitting
19:27on an invisible chair.
19:29The next morning
19:30the academy officers
19:32sent for Landor.
19:33He thought it was
19:34because they knew
19:35he had killed Fry
19:36but when he spoke
19:37with them
19:38he realized
19:38they contacted him
19:40to investigate
19:40Fry's death
19:41a murder
19:42that no one
19:43but Landor
19:44knew he himself
19:45had committed.
19:47Another thing
19:47that surprised Landor
19:48was to learn
19:49that Fry's body
19:50had been mutilated
19:51and his heart removed.
19:53As we know
19:54Artemis did this.
19:56Artemis and Leah
19:57wanted a heart
19:58but were not willing
19:59to kill anyone
20:00to get it.
20:01So when they found out
20:02that Fry supposedly
20:03hung himself
20:04Artemis used
20:05his uncle's
20:06officer jacket
20:07to enter the hospital
20:08relieving the cadet
20:10on duty
20:10and ripped Fry's heart
20:12out.
20:13The ritual
20:14with Fry's heart
20:14did not work
20:15with Leah
20:16because Fry
20:17did not hang himself
20:18but was hanged
20:19by Landor
20:20and Landor
20:21hadn't even managed
20:22to leave him
20:23hanging in the air
20:24so he did not
20:25meet the condition
20:26of being hanged
20:27as the book stated.
20:29This explains
20:30that mystery.
20:31Poe asks Landor
20:33how he found out
20:33who abused
20:34his daughter
20:35and Landor
20:36answers that
20:36he found out
20:37about Fry
20:37because of the pendant
20:38as we already know
20:39and about the other two
20:41he found out
20:41when he deciphered
20:42Fry's diary
20:43where it said
20:44who else was
20:44with her that night.
20:46One of them
20:46was Ballinger
20:47whom Landor
20:47killed
20:48hung in the forest
20:49castrated
20:50and tore out
20:51his heart.
20:52Why did Landor
20:53do this last part?
20:54Well because that way
20:55everyone would believe
20:56that he or the
20:57responsible ones
20:58were Satanists
20:59who wanted hearts
21:00to perform rituals
21:01and that would divert
21:02all attention
21:03from him.
21:04The third person
21:05involved that night
21:05is the cadet
21:06who escaped
21:07taking his clothes.
21:09Landor says
21:09he would have liked
21:10to kill him
21:10but it is enough
21:11for him to wait
21:12for that guy
21:12to never live in peace
21:13and always look
21:14over his shoulder
21:15suspecting that someone
21:16will try to kill him.
21:18In the end
21:18Poe asks
21:19and now what
21:20and Landor tells him
21:21that depends on him.
21:22His plan was to
21:23turn himself in to Poe
21:24at the very end
21:25but well
21:26Poe discovered him
21:27before that.
21:28Landor also passes
21:29a note to Poe
21:30which Poe reads
21:31without us knowing
21:31what it says
21:32and it's surely
21:33a confession
21:33but Poe gets up
21:35and burns it
21:35in a candle
21:36before leaving
21:36being stopped
21:37by Landor
21:38who before Poe
21:39leaves
21:39tells him that
21:40he would have liked
21:41Matty to meet
21:41a guy like him
21:42maybe they would have
21:43even become family.
21:45This implies
21:45how much Landor
21:46esteems Poe
21:47and that he is
21:47the son-in-law
21:48he would have wanted
21:49something that surely
21:50means a lot to Poe
21:51who as we saw
21:52has been looked down
21:53upon by everyone
21:53his whole life.
21:55So Poe
21:55thanks him for those words
21:56and then says goodbye.
21:58The movie ends
21:59with Landor
22:00going to the cliff
22:01where his daughter jumped
22:02turning his back to him
22:03and releasing a tape
22:04of Matty
22:04that flies with the wind
22:06while we hear him say
22:07rest my love
22:08referring to Matty.
