Movie : Shot Caller (film)
What happens when one bad decision turns a family man into a ruthless prison gang leader? Shot Caller (2017) is a raw, intense crime drama that follows Jacob, a successful businessman whose life is shattered after a fatal DUI. Sent to prison, he quickly learns that survival behind bars means becoming someone else entirely. Forced to adapt, he rises through the ranks of a violent gang—until there’s no turning back.
Is Shot Caller based on a true story? No—but it feels disturbingly real. The film explores how the prison system can break a man down and rebuild him into something unrecognizable.
In this recap, we’ll break down Jacob’s chilling transformation into “Money,” the brutal decisions he makes to protect his family, and the shocking final act that shows how far he’ll go to play the game on his own terms. It’s a story of power, sacrifice, and the haunting cost of survival.

00:00A man with a normal life is sentenced to prison after causing the death of his friend in an
00:06accident, and he will have to join a dangerous gang to survive both inside and outside of jail.
00:13This is the story of Jacob Harlock, a prisoner who, when we meet him, is writing a letter to
00:19his son George, after years without contacting him, to say goodbye because he tells him there
00:24will never be anything from him again and asks him to always take care of his mother.
00:28Shortly after, an emergency alarm goes off, since one of the prisoners apparently hanged
00:33himself on the very day of his release, and later we see him receive $200, a temporary
00:39ID, and get into a police car that will take him to the train station.
00:43After traveling, he reunites with his friend Frank, also known as Cannon, who tells him
00:47he has a great night prepared for him, and introduces him to Howie, who is like the man
00:52in charge of the plan.
00:54On the other hand, we meet a police officer named Kutcher, who is in charge of supervising
00:58criminals on parole, and in this case goes in search of one of them, but when he arrives
01:03at the house, no one answers the door.
01:05Instead, out of nowhere, they begin to shoot at him through the door.
01:09Luckily, the officer has a bulletproof vest, and immediately breaks him by force to arrest
01:14him.
01:15Later, Jacob arrives with his friends at a party full of drugs and women, although he simply
01:19prefers to go to the bathroom and reject the naked girl waiting for him in bed.
01:24When leaving the room, he is surprised by a shootout, and that's why his friends escort
01:28him out before the police arrive, and when he's in the car, he gives instructions to
01:32Howie about the next steps he must follow, which include buying two prepaid phones and
01:36meeting him at the motel at 10 in the morning.
01:40Then he continues the road alone, and there he remembers that 10 years ago he had a totally
01:44different life.
01:46We meet his son Josh, to whom he wrote at the beginning of the movie, and his wife as they
01:50prepare to go to a dinner with their friends Tom and Jennifer.
01:54The dinner seems fun, and after several bottles of wine, they head back, but Jacob gets distracted
01:59while driving, causing a car accident in which Tom dies.
02:03Returning to the present, we see Kutcher in a police meeting about a deal that a criminal
02:07nicknamed the Beast will make who's linked with Jacob, a Mexican, to sell smuggled war
02:12weapons, and Kutcher's role in this investigation is to locate our protagonist.
02:17Then we go back to the day after the accident, when Jacob decides to plead guilty on his lawyer's
02:22recommendation, since in this way he will reduce his sentence to only 16 months in prison.
02:27And although his wife does not agree, he accepts the deal with the prosecution.

02:42Thank you very much in advance.
02:44Let's continue.
02:45At present, we see him meeting with Howie, just as they had planned the night before,
02:50and they go to a flower shop in the north of Los Angeles, where they are received by
02:53a man named Herman, and while they talk in private, the Mexican confesses to him that
02:58he requested him exclusively for this deal, because he trusts his work.
03:03Then we find out that Howie belonged to the military forces, and while he was on a mission,
03:08he found in a hideout the thousand weapons they are going to sell, and he arranged with some
03:12contractors to bring them back to the United States.
03:15That's when Frank shows up to tell him that he wants to take revenge on the guys from the
03:19shootout because he already knows who they were, but Jacob prefers to wait until closing
03:23the arms deal, and he reminds him that he cannot be seen with any other ex-prisoner.
03:28So he leaves with Howie, whom he threatens for having told Frank his location, and this
03:33makes him remember the exact day he arrived in prison, fearful of being among criminals of
03:37all kinds.
03:38At first, Jacob tries not to draw attention, and in the middle of the night, the older
03:43prisoners take advantage of the fact that the guard in charge leaves to give another
03:47of the newcomers not a very good welcome.
03:50But the next day, another prisoner picks a fight with Jacob, and he takes advantage of
03:54everyone else watching him to start hitting him, until the guards manage to separate them.
03:59Back in the present, Jacob goes to his parole officer, who is none other than Kutcher, who
04:04takes pictures of all his tattoos to make sure he doesn't have a new one from some criminal
04:08gang.
04:09Then he asks him about the party shootout, but Jacob tells him that he was at a motel,
04:13although the officer doesn't believe him.
04:15Then he remembers the day after his first fight in prison, when a prisoner asks him to
04:19meet with the group's leader to join them, and later he receives a visit from his wife,
04:24who tells him that Jennifer will sue them for Tom's death, and because of this, Jacob asks
04:28her to come home so she doesn't leave for studies.
04:32At present, he reunites with her and invites her to a restaurant to give her some money,
04:36but she ends up rejecting it.
04:38And there we find out that they had no contact during the last seven years.
04:42Back to his stay in prison, we see that Jacob had to take a test to join the group of prisoners,
04:47which consisted of carrying a drug balloon into the yard without being discovered.
04:51And the next day, he manages to do it successfully.
04:54At present, Jacob meets with the gang to organize the weapons plan.
04:58But while they are talking, they notice that Canyon is a bit nervous, so they begin to
05:02distrust him, and that's why they start following him after leaving there.
05:06In this way, he discovers that Frank went to meet with Kutcher, who threatens him with
05:10locking up his girlfriend and sending her back to prison if he does not cooperate with
05:14him.
05:15So he will have to keep his phone on at all times in order to catch them at the moment of
05:19making the deal.
05:21Disturbed by what he saw, he decides to return to the hotel and look at the photos of his
05:25family to calm himself.
05:27But this makes him remember the moment when the gang leader ordered him to kill another
05:31prisoner who was supposedly a snitch, who at that moment receives a visit from his wife
05:36Kate and his son Josh.
05:39At first, Jacob is amazed by how grown he is, and although the boy tells him that he understands
05:44that the reason for staying away from them was to protect them and he wants to help them,
05:49he asks him to disappear from there and slams the door in his face.
05:53To make matters worse, he discovers that the police are watching him, and that is why he
05:57decides to escape through the window to meet with Howie, whom he asks how he met Frank,
06:03but he simply tells him that he is the brother of a girl he met thanks to the gang leader.
06:08Going back to the past, we see that another of the prisoners is Hernan, the Mexican he met
06:13at the flower shop and a relative of some important mafia guys.
06:17That day they tell him that they will be part of a riot, and although he doesn't want to
06:21do it, he ends up participating in it and defending one of his men who was about to be attacked,
06:26but unfortunately there was a camera in front of him that captured all his movements and
06:31will show some images in court in front of his wife, which extended his prison time.
06:36Then they take him to a new cell with another companion nicknamed Ripper, and fortunately he
06:41begins to get along with him since they belong to the same gang.
06:45In this prison, they take outdoor time inside cages to avoid fights, and in one of those
06:50recesses we see them training together and meeting one of the gang leaders.
06:55Shortly after, Jacob receives the divorce papers, and the next day during outdoor recess he decides
07:00to start a fight with another inmate because he thinks that in this way he will gain status
07:05in front of the other prisoners.
07:08And that works very well for him since days later a guard takes them to meet the beast.
07:13Being there, he tells him that the prisoners are the ones who control the prison and that
07:17even one of the guards works for him.
07:19He asks him if he is ready to enter a higher level in his gang, in which he will have access
07:24to books in his own space.
07:25At present we see him going to buy some materials at a hardware store, while Kutcher keeps an eye
07:30on Frank to keep him informed about the deal, without realizing that Jacob passed by his
07:34side in a car he doesn't recognize.
07:37Then we see that after a few years since the last memory in prison, Jacob receives the news
07:41that for serving 85% of his sentence he will be able to be released on parole, and along
07:46with this he also receives a call from the beast to tell him about a weapons deal with
07:49Cañon, and that he will be in charge of the operation.
07:52But Jacob tells him that he hopes to get his former life back once he is out, and at that
07:56moment the beast threatens him with harming his family if he does not participate, leaving
08:00him no choice but to accept.
08:02In the present, Jacob goes after Cañon to carry out the deal, but his true intention
08:06is to kill him for betraying him, although he tells him that it is not just an example
08:10while agonizing.
08:11Then he cleans his fingerprints and sets a trap for Kutcher, who shortly after arrives
08:16at the house to find the corpse of his informant.
08:19There he takes Cañon's phone and reads a text message that Jacob had sent him, with
08:23the supposed coordinates of the place where the deal would take place.
08:26Later we see Jacob looking at the warehouse where the weapons shipment will be,
08:30while enjoying the wind through the window, and at the same time we see that a police
08:33patrol is trying to trace the calls from his phone.
08:37When meeting with the men involved in the deal, they begin to ask him about Cañon, but
08:40he convinces them to continue with the deal while one of them begins to call him, and thus
08:45they make the weapons delivery official, at the same time that Kutcher tells his partners
08:48about the murder of his informant without knowing what to do now.
08:52Then Jacob meets Howie and the truck, loaded with weapons, and there our protagonist decides
08:56to turn on the phone to receive some coordinates from Hernan.
08:59And strangely, Jacob decides to forward this message to Cañon's phone, making Kutcher read
09:04it and he quickly prepares together with the rest of the officers to go after it.
09:08When our protagonist is about to arrive at the business site, he asks Howie for the weapon,
09:12and begins to point it at him to interrogate him about how many weapons there really are.
09:17It turns out that the real shipment is 2,000 weapons, but the rest are in another warehouse,
09:21because Howie planned to sell them together with Cañon to another gang.
09:25And with this revelation, Jacob forces him to forget about them, and orders him to jump
09:29off the truck, so that he doesn't have to kill him.
09:31Shortly after, he meets with Hernan, to whom he tells that Cañon and Howie were snitches,
09:37and that's why he took care of them.
09:38He also tells him about the extra weapons that were hidden, and they agree to continue with
09:43the deal, but they will split the rest in half.
09:45So they make the exchange, and when they begin to count the money, the police surround them
09:50to arrest each one of them.
09:52From afar, we see that Howie is watching what is happening, but he manages to escape.
09:57The next day, Kutcher meets with Jacob to offer him a job, although he tells him that he prefers
10:02to serve his sentence for arms trafficking.
10:04Even so, the policeman tells him that if he turns in the beast and everyone involved, he
10:09will be able to gain full freedom, but our protagonist rejects him.
10:13Then he takes him to an individual cell, and once alone, he pulls out a razor blade he had
10:18hidden in his backside.
10:20Hours pass, and an officer comes for him to meet again with the beast, who is angry because
10:24he has deduced that he killed Cañon and sends a message to the police with the coordinates.
10:29There, the leader threatens to kill his family for what he did, making him furious, and when
10:34the policeman comes for him in the cell, he pulls out the razor blade and threatens to
10:38kill him, locking him in the cage instead.
10:41The beast tells him about his plan of calling the police to return to prison and reunite with him.
10:46Then, he opens the leader's cage, who immediately lunges at him, but in a matter of seconds, Jacob
10:52slits his throat with the razor blade and leaves him bleeding on the floor while telling him
10:56that nobody will touch his family.
10:58In a rather grim scene, he approaches the policeman covered in blood to order him to tell everyone
11:04that the beast attacked him with the razor blade, and he simply defended himself.
11:08In exchange for this, he guarantees that he will keep his deal with the gang, because he
11:13is the one who will be in charge from now on.
11:15Afterwards, Kutcher receives a text message with the location of the rest of the weapons,
11:20not understanding why Jacob did it, and later, we see him receive a letter from his son in
11:25which he says that he will move on with his life and learn from his mistakes, and that he
11:29will become his mother's protector because he has finally forgiven him.
11:33These words make him cry, and then we see them spend time outdoors inside the cage that belonged
11:38to the leader gang.
