00:00Frank Walsh, it's time for Frank Walsh. Frank talks while Frank Walsh, it's time for Frank Walsh.
00:11Alright, my next guest is Joe Dyson. He broke my heart when I was seven years old.
00:20And, well, he's a Jersey legend, Notre Dame legend, and, well, let's go for a walk.
00:27You're kind, I appreciate it. I love walking with you.
00:30Yeah, I'm a Dolphins fan.
00:31That's okay. I'm not apologizing. I'm not going to apologize for that.
00:35I was seven years old watching that Super Bowl, 1983.
00:40January 83.
00:42It was quite a day. I mean, it was our first experience. It was a strike season.
00:49Yep.
00:49And we managed to be able to get out and have an incredible football game.
00:53Of course, John Riggins' MVP was absolutely phenomenal.
00:57But that fourth and one play, that decided the whole game.
01:00It really did. What a big difference it made.
01:02But you've been on an unbelievable journey, too, though.
01:05Yeah, it was 520. And that's how high-to-scale went at the doctor's office in 2015.
01:13Well, I'm curious. What made you decide that enough was enough and that you were going to get yourself healthier and you were going to take care of yourself?
01:23Well, the first thing that happened was I had MRSA.
01:26Okay.
01:26And that got me down a little bit. It got me under 500.
01:31But I always struggled with my weight.
01:34Then I had a viral video. I got hired by Barstool.
01:37Watch the curb.
01:39I got hired by... It's a bocce court here.
01:42Yep.
01:43Yeah.
01:44And so I got hired by Barstool part-time.
01:47Uh-huh.
01:47And I started having people help me at Barstool, like Stu Finer helped.
01:52Then the pandemic hit and I went back to 469.
01:58Wow.
01:59And I started walking more.
02:03And it's been up and down here and there.
02:06But the real thing started a couple years ago.
02:10I went to a game, Notre Dame, against Ohio State.
02:14Uh-huh.
02:15And...
02:16A national championship game?
02:17No.
02:18A game a couple years ago.
02:19The game was the last...
02:21Boston and the last play in South Bend.
02:23Got it.
02:23It was my first ever trip to South Bend.
02:25I always wanted to see the Irish.
02:27Uh-huh.
02:27And, uh...
02:30I went...
02:31I had a park far to get to the stadium.
02:35From, uh, where we, uh, were set up.
02:37So, walking across the campus, we started talking.
02:40He goes, why don't you walk more?
02:41You can probably lose some weight.
02:43And, uh, a week later, the streak started.
02:46And it's over 600, heading to 700.
02:51And I have not missed a day.
02:53Rain, snow, sick.
02:54I had, uh, I had, uh, sinus infection.
02:57I still walk.
02:58I had, uh, flu.
03:00I had fevers.
03:01I still walk.
03:02Cold.
03:03How much...
03:03How far do you walk a day?
03:06I'm now up to about 20,000 steps a day.
03:08Wow.
03:09And when I started, uh, my goal was trying to get close to 10.
03:14Now it's, now it's, now it's, I want to get 15 at the very least.
03:21Wow.
03:21And I'm shooting for 20,000 a day.
03:23Oh, man.
03:24It's so, it's so great.
03:25You know, it's, uh, you're such an inspiration to me to be in the situation you were in and
03:31to make your mind up that you want to be better.
03:34To make your mind up you want to be healthier.
03:36To make your mind up you're going to stay with it.
03:37Now a lot of people do a lot of things.
03:39They get committed and then all of a sudden they get distracted.
03:42Oh, yeah.
03:42The distractions are always there.
03:44And, but yet you continue to, to fight the fight.
03:47And I think it's fantastic.
03:48I just think it's great that you do that.
03:50It really is.
03:51And I, I don't think people realize how hard it is either to do that.
03:56I mean, you know, you have your different temptations out there, but to be able to stay
04:01with what you're doing.
04:02When it's, when it's 15 degrees, you don't want to go out there walking.
04:06And then yesterday I was walking in, uh, Nutley in Belleville and it was a hundred, it
04:11was like a, a hundred percent humidity and it was like 98 degrees.
04:15Wow.
04:15It was a tough walk, but I got it.
04:19I got my walk done and it's just, you got to get, be committed.
04:24You got to, and I always say this, I can do it.
04:27You can do it.
04:28Sure.
04:28And I'm saying that's why you're such an inspiration.
04:31I mean, look at you now five, the scale only went to five 20, right?
04:35Yeah.
04:36It was more than that.
04:38It probably was.
04:38Mine went like five 30, five 40.
04:40And here you are just a shake under 300.
04:44I mean, it's incredible.
04:45I never thought I would have been able to, but I was, uh, you say it started, you started
04:48in 2000, 2015 was when I was at my height and I got sick.
04:53I had MRSA.
05:00Hello.
05:01And I just, there, that's great.
05:10So this is, uh, 20th anniversary is coming up.
05:15Oh, I don't know if you want me to bring that up or not.
05:18It's okay.
05:19It's not a problem.
05:19It's, I mean, it's one of the most horrific injuries in NFL history that, uh, that day.
05:27And I, I, and they showed it like nonstop.
05:30I remember.
05:30I know.
05:31And I think, I think it really changed the way in honesty, I feel like it really changed
05:36the way that injuries are presented in football today.
05:39Today, somebody gets hurt and they immediately go to a commercial.
05:43Yeah.
05:44And I think that's the right thing to do.
05:46They're going about it in the right way.
05:47And nobody needs to see what's happening all the time.
05:50You'll be informed by the announcers.
05:51People let you know what's going on.
05:53But there's a visual aspect to it that is very, I think, uh, discerning for people.
05:58And so for me, it was like, it's, I can't believe it's been 40 years.
06:01That's the thing that amazes me.
06:02It was, uh, just five days after my 10th birthday.
06:05Wow.
06:06So I remember that quite well.
06:08It certainly changed my life.
06:10It really did.
06:11Well, you had a successful career, uh, Sunday night football at ESPN.
06:16Loved my broadcasting career.
06:17My partners, Mike Patrick, who just passed away, who just lost Mike.
06:21And Paul McGuire, my other one, was another great one.
06:24Worked with Tony Kornheiser.
06:25And, uh, Mike Tirico was there.
06:29Great producers.
06:31What was, what's fun about it, it really is a team of people that work so hard together.
06:36Everybody having a different thing, a different responsibility.
06:39Just like I know that, you know, you have people that are encouraging you.
06:42Oh, yeah.
06:43Mikey Betts, uh, Janks.
06:44Yeah, you have people going all the way.
06:45Uh, JJ Watt was basically, like, a big, big, big part of this.
06:51I mean, it's just incredible.
06:53And JJ Watt, great guy, by the way.
06:54Uh-huh.
06:54He was the first celebrity to actually walk with me.
06:57Was he really?
06:58Yep.
06:58And now we're, it's just, we're getting bigger and better every day.
07:03And, um, of course, your best years were with the Washington Redskins.
07:08Yep.
07:08Mm-hmm.
07:09Now known as commanders.
07:10And one thing is, your coach was Joe Gibbs.
07:13Yes, he was.
07:13And I don't think he gets the respect he deserves.
07:17I think, I think to a degree, because he left football and went into NASCAR and had just
07:21as much success in NASCAR, if not more than he did in football, people sort of think about
07:27him in a different way.
07:28If it was just football, I think he would be where he belongs at the top.
07:31But because it's sort of, he sort of shares that a little bit, it really makes a world
07:36of difference, I think, the perception.
07:38But, you know, Joe's an incredible guy.
07:39And how do you go from football into an entirely different world than NASCAR and you have the
07:44same kind of success?
07:45Oh, and it's a great success.
07:46He's one of the top owners in the Asia.
07:48That's why, that's why he is what he is.
07:49I mean, it's incredible.
07:50I mean, but the fact that he won three Super Bowls in, well, like, eight years with three different
07:57quarterbacks.
07:58Yep.
07:58Three different running backs, too.
08:00Yeah.
08:01It was incredible.
08:03I mean, don't let the Redskins get hot.
08:06That was how it always was back then.
08:08That's right.
08:08We get hot, look out.
08:09Look out.
08:10Well, is there anything you want to promote?
08:12I'm good.
08:13I got a book out there called How to Be a Champion Every Day, Six Keys to Success.
08:18It talks about the world of sports, the world of business, and our own lives all parallel to
08:22one another.
08:22Oh, I got to get that on Audible.
08:24I have it.
08:25Actually, the hardest thing I ever did, I did the audio for it.
08:27Oh, nice.
08:28And it's the hardest thing I've ever done in a media capacity or in an entertainment
08:32capacity to be able to, because I talk fast, right?
08:35We're from Jersey.
08:35We talk fast.
08:36Yep, yep.
08:36And to be able to take your time to make sure that you enunciate and get everything out there
08:40is vitally important for everybody.
08:41Yes, sir.
08:42When I'm doing the walks, a lot of times I got the Audible going.
08:46Good.
08:47Yep.
08:47Yeah, I appreciate that.
08:48Oh, thanks.
08:49We good?
08:50Yeah, thanks for joining us.
08:51Thanks, Frank.
08:52Great being with you.
08:52Continued success.
08:54Yes.
08:54Woo-hoo.
08:59Woo-hoo.
