00:00All right, we are getting into the heat, the hot of summer.
00:05You know, NFL training camps are going to be opening soon.
00:08And, you know, it's time to get a look ahead of the football season.
00:13And, you know, when it gets hot like this, you want a body armor.
00:17Heck, you want two body armors, you know.
00:19Body armor, no artificial eyes, all natural.
00:23You know, choose better, choose body armor.
00:25And today's guest is special.
00:26I met him on an airplane last year.
00:28I'm talking about T.E. Barber, Giants legend now doing A.E.'s own radio show.
00:33And we're going to get his views on what's coming up for the Giants this year and this coming NFL season.
00:39Let's go for a walk.
00:58All right, Tiki.
01:01Now, when it gets hot like this, does it remind you of your days when you had to go to training camp in the brutal July, August sun?
01:10You're bringing back horrible memories from Albany, New York, where we had training camp.
01:15And the worst part about it is that we stayed in the dorms, and the dorms didn't have air conditioning.
01:22Oh, no.
01:23So by year three, everybody was bringing these massive air conditionings with them, and then big TVs, and we made the most of it.
01:32But I had a decade in dorm rooms up in Albany, New York.
01:35Now, what was the hardest exercise you ran?
01:38I remember you said about Jim Fossil would run you up a hill?
01:42No.
01:42Well, in my off-seasons, I used to run hills with Greg Camilla, who was my fullback.
01:47He found this trail that was hiked up a mountain in Ramapo, New Jersey, and we'd run it every morning in the off-season.
01:54And that was awesome.
01:55But it got me ready for Coach Fossil's conditioning test, which was 10% incline, 10 miles an hour.
02:03You had to do it for 30 seconds and do that 10 reps.
02:06And if you could stay on, you basically just had to stay on, you passed the test.
02:11You know, well, he was old school.
02:12You know, you get these old school coaches.
02:14I mean, now, we're going into training camp this year, and the Giants, I think they face a key year.
02:22Right.
02:22They've had a great, by all accounts, they had a great draft.
02:26They did.
02:27They did.
02:28I mean.
02:29Jackson Dart, I like.
02:30Cam Scadaboo, I like.
02:32The D-tackle, Mbaw, offensive tackle, they brought in.
02:35They brought in some good players.
02:36Carter to say he's going to be like, well, everyone's looking at him already.
02:40Well, yeah, Abdul Carter, obviously, is the stud of the draft.
02:43But I feel like they drafted players that can be impactful right away.
02:48And so, you're going to see him playing, and I think it gives him a chance to start to build something.
02:55The only thing I don't want to see happen is the fans start to get frustrated if we're not winning right away,
03:01and they start calling for the firing of the coach again.
03:04Because that becomes such a distraction.
03:06Because to me, it seems like the Giants are in the year one again, even though they have a coach that's been there several years.
03:13Right, yeah, I mean, I was over there a couple weeks ago, and Dave's felt really energized.
03:20And I think he feels like it's finally starting to come together.
03:24And with Russell Wilson and Jameis as the quarterbacks, but also drafting potentially the future in Jackson Dart,
03:32it brings a different feel.
03:34I mean, to me, I think Giants are smart if they just have a redshirt year for Dart.
03:40Just let him see the whole year.
03:41Yeah, I mean, unless he's good enough to play.
03:44Unless, yeah.
03:45Right, don't forget, Russell Wilson, who is here now, he wasn't drafted to be the starter.
03:50He was drafted to just be a project out in Seattle, and he beat out the guy who they brought in to start.
03:55Matt Flynn.
03:56Matt Flynn, exactly.
03:57Everyone expected Matt Flynn.
03:58And then Russell Wilson ended up starting, and he won a Super Bowl.
04:02So, you never know.
04:03Some rookies just get it.
04:05We've seen it the last couple of years with Jaden Daniels down in Washington, C.J. Stroud.
04:11We saw it in Houston.
04:12Some of these rookies are capable of doing it.
04:14I mean, for as bad as last season was for the Giants, it looks like, especially the draft this year, that they actually have a direction.
04:21Yes, yes.
04:23I think when I look at the Giants, and I'm cautiously optimistic, the thing that I take away most from this draft is that it feels like there's finally the plan.
04:33Right?
04:34For a couple of years, it was, let's just make do with what we have.
04:37But now it feels like there's a plan, and that's exciting.
04:40I mean, to me, I think the Giants are in a situation where they're not winning anything this year.
04:47Unless they do.
04:49I think people said the same thing about Washington a year ago.
04:52That is true.
04:53That is true.
04:54They made it all the way to the championship.
04:55But I think what you want to see is a team that looks competitive.
04:58Yes.
04:59Looks like it's going in the right direction.
05:00Looks like it has the pieces.
05:01Yes.
05:02I mean, I'm a Dolphin fan.
05:04Oh, I'm sorry.
05:07I'm sorry for your Dolphins.
05:08I'm also sorry for your Mets.
05:09I'm almost ready to watch it burn.
05:14The Mets?
05:15Come on.
05:16I'm not talking about the Mets.
05:17I'm talking about the Dolphins.
05:17Well, the Dolphins are interesting.
05:19I feel like I want to grab a fiddle and just fiddle all season long.
05:25Because once Zach Wilson gets behind under center, it's going to be ugly.
05:28Come on.
05:29Two is going to stay healthy.
05:30Everything's going to be all right.
05:33I'm better than half the offensive line on the Dolphins.
05:35Mike McDaniel is going to find a way to save Zach Wilson's career.
05:38So, if he has to play, he's going to be awesome.
05:42And the Mets, you know.
05:44Look, the Mets, it's baseball, as Evan always likes to say on our show.
05:49But I think they overestimated how much the youth would grow.
05:57We've already seen Francisco Alvarez get sent down, I think.
06:01And now Acuna is sent down as well.
06:04Well, Acuna got sent down.
06:06Right.
06:06But Vientos is hurt.
06:09He's coming back.
06:10I know, but we expected all those young players to take these big steps forward.
06:14Acuna went down because they just couldn't get enough backs for him.
06:17Yeah, of course.
06:17But if he was hitting great instead of hitting 200 over the last month.
06:21He would have been sitting if he was hitting.
06:24Yeah, he basically has become a pinch runner and a defensive replacement at the end of the game.
06:29And that doesn't help his development.
06:30No, not at all.
06:32I just don't want to see Jarrett Young.
06:34Well, you're stuck with Jarrett Young.
06:37I hate Jarrett Young.
06:38Why do you hate him?
06:38He's just a guy.
06:39No, he's awful.
06:40He's filling a role, man.
06:41He hit 120 in Korea.
06:43Maybe they have some good pitchers over there.
06:47I don't know.
06:52But football, I mean, what teams do you think are going to have a breakout season this year in the NFL?
06:58A breakout season?
07:01It's hard to pick.
07:03I think one that's interesting is the Carolina Panthers.
07:08They got a good young quarterback in Bryce Young.
07:10He's small, so he has to learn how to play in a different way.
07:13He was so bad last year and the year before.
07:16But he was good at the end of the year.
07:17In December, it looked like something finally clicked.
07:20After they benched him and he got back out there, it looked like something finally clicked.
07:24Well, sometimes you need, I think, young players, but especially young quarterbacks.
07:29They need that.
07:30They need to be sat down and watched so they can see what they're doing well and what they're doing poorly.
07:36And I think it worked for them.
07:37I think that's why they met San Alvarez down, ironically.
07:40Yeah, well, no, I think he regressed defensively.
07:44Well, no, that was the last straw.
07:45Right.
07:46Offensively, it is what it is.
07:47Catchers are supposed to be 220 hitters and hit you 10, 15 home runs.
07:51But when he can't stop, dig balls out of the dirt, and they go to the backstop and cause runs,
07:57then you got to let them bake a little bit more down in the minors.
08:00I mean, I think we got some nice rising teams like the Commanders.
08:07Commanders are good, but they were good last year.
08:09If you're talking about a team that is going to come out of nowhere, it's hard.
08:14Because I think there's so many existing powers.
08:17Like, I don't know what Pittsburgh's going to be like this year with Aaron Rodgers.
08:20I'm going to tell you what Pittsburgh's going to be like.
08:23I think Aaron Rodgers is going to be a disaster in Pittsburgh.
08:25Maybe.
08:26I think Aaron Rodgers' ego is not healthy for a team.
08:31Well, I think the only thing that mitigates that is Mike Tomlin.
08:35Because there's no coach like Mike Tomlin in the NFL.
08:38No, there isn't.
08:39And so, if anybody can get him under control, it'll be Mike T.
08:42Well, what I'm hoping for is a disaster in Pittsburgh.
08:47Total disaster that Tomlin gets out of Pittsburgh.
08:52Goes to Miami.
08:53Huh?
08:54Interesting.
08:55Goes to Miami.
08:55That could happen.
08:56He won't be out of coaching long.
08:57I got one for you.
08:59And this will shock some people.
09:02The Indianapolis Colts.
09:05So, we know who they signed in the offseason.
09:08Yep.
09:09Our former quarterback, Daniel Jones.
09:11I'm not so sure about Anthony Richardson's development or what he'll ultimately become.
09:16But now he's going to be pushed for the starting job.
09:18And if Daniel Jones gets his second opportunity with a team that's kind of ready to win,
09:23that just doesn't have the quarterback, Indy could be a surprise to him.
09:26I wouldn't have minded Dolphins giving Daniel Jones a chance.
09:29Yeah.
09:30Better than Zach Wilson.
09:31Look, he was a starter for five years.
09:33So, he's got NFL starting experience.
09:35And the last thing you want when you're trying to build a team is to get a quarterback without experience.
09:40Now, I'm no fan of them, but your partner is, of course.
09:45The Jets?
09:45They're green and white.
09:46The Jets?
09:48I mean...
09:48It seems like all my partners are Jets fans.
09:50BT was a Jets fan.
09:51I mean, the Jets...
09:52The Jets, the Jets, you just always know something bad, something's wrong here.
09:55Something's going to go wrong.
09:56You know, every time you think the Jets hit rock bottom, they get the X screwdriver and dig even deeper and find a new rock bottom.
10:03Right.
10:03That's...
10:03Well, I mean, they have a good coach.
10:05I like what Aaron Glenn is doing or trying to do as far as putting that culture together, keeping it below the radar, not trying to be...
10:14Not trying to win the offseason or win the press conferences.
10:17You just go about your business.
10:19Learn how to be a competitive and complete team and let all the other stuff you play do the talking.
10:25I know one thing, I think.
10:27This is one thing I'm predicting.
10:29Week one, Justin Fields tears the Steelers apart and the Jets pick off Aaron Rodgers and seal the game with a pick six that have Jets fans, like, throwing for...
10:41Well, now, that would be...
10:42That would be amazing.
10:44It would also be...
10:45It would cause Jets fans to want to jump out of the stadium.
10:49I'm telling you.
10:50And then two weeks later, they'll be back to normal.
10:53The normal Jets will be back.
10:55The only reason it sucked with Brett Favre is because he got hurt.
10:58I mean, not for Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers.
10:59The only reason it sucked for Aaron is because he got hurt.
11:01Now, if he's not hurt, who knows what can happen?
11:04They had a good team.
11:05They just didn't have a quarterback that was healthy.
11:08We're going to wrap at the end of this block.
11:10All right.
11:11Since he was willing to walk in 99-degree weather...
11:14Oh, yeah.
11:15Here's a nice shirt to help cool you down.
11:19Nice little...
11:20Oh, this is beautiful.
11:21Beautiful shirt.
11:22Look at that.
11:23Frank walks.
11:25Frank walks.
11:26I mean, how long have we been walking?
11:27We've been walking...
11:28And Tiki sweats.
11:29It feels like we're walking in a sauna out here today.
11:31I'm black and bald.
11:33I attract heat.
11:34And so I sweat my ass off.
11:37I thank you, Frank.
11:38Well, thanks.
11:38Thanks for joining Milwaukee.
11:39You know, I met you last year on an airplane.
11:42I did.
11:42It was random.
11:43I walked on the airplane.
11:44I said, I know that guy.
11:45And then we chatted.
11:46What's funny is, prior to that, prior, that was the most famous person that had been on the airplane.
11:51I mean, I've been traveling a lot lately.
11:53Is that right?
11:53Well, you're famous.
11:53Going everywhere and there.
11:54You're famous on the airplane yourself.
11:56I actually had someone more famous than you on my last flight.
11:59Who?
12:00Former Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan.
12:02Get out of here.
12:03Former Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan.
12:05You do politics, too?
12:06What?
12:06You do politics as well?
12:07I try to stay away from politics.
12:08Because when you do politics, I have my views.
12:11Everyone knows my views, basically.
12:12You have politics.
12:14You put politics out here.
12:15Half the people are always going to hate you, no matter what.
12:17So it's best to keep politics away.
12:19That's why it's hard to run politics.
12:20It's nice to have an outlet where you don't have politics.
12:23That's why sports are there for you.
12:25Yeah.
12:25Well, hopefully.
12:26Yeah, right.
12:28Thank you, Frank.
12:28Oh, thanks.
12:29Oh, thanks.
