00:00I'm in South Dakota, one of the most sparsely populated states in America.
00:14I am on my way to go and spend the weekends with a family of polygamists.
00:22So they are fundamentalist Mormons.
00:26Jeff, the father, wanted to expand their family.
00:30There are two wives currently on the scene.
00:33So, yeah, lots to talk about.
00:38Polygamy is illegal in most countries in the world, including America.
00:43But Jeff Aldredge refused to let the law stop him having multiple wives.
00:48And in 2008, then aged 45, he tied the knot in a spiritual service with 22-year-old Vanessa
00:55and then a year later with 21-year-old Charisse.
01:00I always try and go into these situations with an open mind,
01:03but I do think it can kind of feed into the narrative that women are there to kind of serve men.
01:15I don't understand why a man needs more than one partner.
01:22Jeff and his wives raised a family in the predominantly Mormon state of Utah.
01:27But back then, Utah banned people living with multiple spouses, legal wedding or not.
01:34And to avoid prosecution, the family moved to this remote, wild west corner of America.
01:41It would be really interesting to hear from Jeff, like, how much of this is because he feels it's necessary,
01:49because of his religious beliefs, and how much of it is actually just a guy kind of having his cake and eating it.
02:01I need to not get the wives muddled up.
02:06Look at this view. This is stunning.
02:10Oh, my God. Super isolated, though.
02:15Oh, my God, they're the kids. Hi. OK, gang.
02:30Hello. How are you, Stacy? Hi. How are you?
02:34It's good to meet you. Nice to meet you.
02:36You survived our driveway. I did. I know. I'm in one piece. Jeff.
02:39I'm Jeff. Lovely to meet you. Hello. Vanessa. Nice to meet you, Vanessa.
02:42Good to meet you. Likewise. Hi. I'm Cherise. Nice to meet you, Cherise. Welcome.
02:47Thank you. Hello, baby. This is Chloe. I'm so happy.
02:51Want to shake your hand? Two-year-old Chloe is the youngest of the family's eight kids.
02:56Fourteen-year-old Dane, the eldest. Nice to meet you.
03:00Right, watch this. Here we go.
03:03Jeff, Vanessa, Sebastian, Dane, Daniel, Zara, Dalinar, Misty, Chloe, Serenity.
03:17Serenity. Yes.
03:18Cherise. Very good. I'm impressed.
03:20There we go. There we go. What a gang.
03:23You took a course.
03:24Listen, thanks for having me. You're welcome.
03:26I'm so excited. Come take a tour. Great. Okay. Thank you.
03:31Here we go. You're going to show me. She's going to give the tour right there.
03:33Are you in charge?
03:35I've got so many questions for this family.
03:38The polygamous lifestyle they choose to live on their 20-acre farm
03:42was officially rejected by the mainstream Mormon church over 100 years ago.
03:48So this is the living room. Just, you know, pretty typical living room.
03:53Yeah. Here is our kitchen.
03:55Look at this. Yeah. A lot of this is from our garden.
03:58Wow. Yeah. And then we are so lucky.
04:03There's one bathroom for all of us to share.
04:05One bathroom, 11 people.
04:0811 people. There you go.
04:09It gets interesting, especially as they grow up.
04:11This could be a regular family home.
04:14I can't pull up.
04:16How about you kids stay downstairs and we'll be right back.
04:20But what I'm dying to know is who sleeps where.
04:23So up here is where me and my children sleep.
04:25Okay. So this is your domain.
04:27Yes.
04:28So your kids all sleep here.
04:29Yep.
04:30And my room is in here.
04:32You sleep here the entire time.
04:35Yes.
04:36And then does Jeff spend some nights here, some nights with Vanessa?
04:39Yes. Currently we're alternating every other night.
04:42He'll spend a night with me.
04:43Then I'll go over to Vanessa's room.
04:44Because I'm married to Jeff.
04:46And then Vanessa's married to Jeff.
04:47It's two different marriages in one family.
04:51How do you decide who does what in terms of chores?
05:01So I'm primarily in charge of meal planning, cooking, and taking care of inside of the house.
05:06Charisse kind of focuses outside the house.
05:09So it's pretty nonstop.
05:10It is.
05:11I know Charisse and I have kind of talked about it.
05:13We're like, okay.
05:14We're at like maximum capacity right now.
05:17And Jeff, where do you come in?
05:20I just kind of sit around and watch TV.
05:22No, that's not true.
05:23What do you do?
05:24What are your chores?
05:26I go to work every day.
05:28I'm a logger.
05:29I chop down trees and the good ones I bring home and make into furniture.
05:35Really?
05:36Yeah.
05:37The income from Jeff's logging business is used to buy essentials for their modest Mormon lifestyle.
05:43Right, where are we going?
05:45We're going up this way.
05:46Okay.
05:47And it looks like some of Jeff's spare wood has been crafted into my weekend digs.
05:53Look at this.
05:54Isn't it cool?
05:55Really cool.
05:58After you.
06:01Charisse, this is so chic.
06:04We do have a sleeping bag up there if it gets too cold.
06:07There's also a little buddy heater we can bring in to heat the space.
06:11And if I need a wee in the middle of the night, do I just come to the family home?
06:16Yes, absolutely.
06:17We'll leave a door unlocked.
06:18I wish we had a set up out here.
06:19I could just go for a wee by the tree.
06:21That's always an option.
06:22Yeah.
06:26What do you think?
06:27I am seriously impressed.
06:30Yeah.
06:31And look at this view.
06:36I mean, I'm sure it's pretty safe.
06:40Yeah, there's no electricity so it's going to be pretty pitch black.
06:47There's just so much to unpick.
06:49Do you know what I mean?
06:51Like even then, Vanessa and Jeff were like linking arms and being like super tactile.
06:58And it's just so jarring because I'm like, oh, what about Charisse?
07:03It just feels so, so foreign to me.
07:05This afternoon, the family have invited me to join them in prayer.
07:18All right, here's one pretty flower.
07:22Are you okay?
07:24Are you okay?
07:25When Jeff married two women, he defied the mainstream Mormon church's strict multiple wives ban.
07:35Now estranged from the church, the family still consider themselves Mormon, but can only practice their religion at home.
07:42Give, oh, give away.
07:47Wonderful.
07:49We worship as a family under the circumstances because we really don't have a group to worship in.
07:55But we're glad that you're here and glad that all the kids are here happy.
08:01Right, Chloe?
08:03Does Mama want to help you do an article of faith?
08:06Can you say a third article of faith?
08:09We believe.
08:13O God, the Eternal Father, we ask Thee in the name of Thy Son, Jesus Christ,
08:18to bless and sanctify this bread to the souls of all those who partake of it,
08:22and keep His commandments, which He hath given them,
08:25that they may always have His Spirit to be with them.
08:28Amen.
08:31You guys can go and hang out for a little bit.
08:33We're probably going to stay and talk to Stacy.
08:39Guys, thank you so much for letting me sit in on that service.
08:43It was short, sweet, concise.
08:46It's nice when you've got little ones.
08:48Maybe that's why God said to have a bunch of children in the first place.
08:52So you keep your services short and everybody enjoys them and they come back for more.
08:56And just on a very sort of honest level, how does it feel to be excommunicated?
09:02On one hand, it's very liberating because now I can express and worship God in the way that I see fit.
09:11But I miss congregation.
09:13You ladies miss that too, right?
09:15Oh, I miss it a lot, yeah.
09:17But we just do the best we can.
09:18Yeah.
09:19You've essentially been kicked out of the church.
09:22Do you ever feel shame?
09:25I did not feel shame because I believed that what I was doing was correct.
09:29And I knew that it was what I wanted.
09:32I knew that it's what I believed God wanted me to do.
09:35Really?
09:36Yes.
09:37You sort of truly believed that?
09:38Oh, absolutely.
09:39I think some people will think it's really quite commendable that you are, you know, living your life on your terms.
09:48I think other people will think, is he using religion to justify having as many wives as he wants?
09:57Sure. I think you probably hit it right on the head, you know, and you can't stop those perceptions.
10:04I feel like many Mormons will be outraged at Jeff's behaviour.
10:17You would come in here and assume that Jeff is in charge, what Jeff says goes.
10:23But Charisse isn't, you know, a subservient woman.
10:28And neither is Vanessa.
10:29There's still a lot for me to try to understand.
10:44All right, um, is there a child that would like to say the prayer?
10:47No.
10:49It's my first evening in South Dakota, with polygamist Mormon Jeff and his two wives, Charisse and Vanessa.
10:54Father in heaven, please bless his death, and that this room will no show strength in our bodies.
10:59And in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
11:01Amen to that.
11:03And I'm trying to get my head around this unfamiliar lifestyle that the law and Mormon church condemns.
11:10And whose bed are you in tonight, Jeff?
11:13Can't remember.
11:15I believe it would be mine.
11:18Kids know.
11:20It's a terrible thing if I forget that.
11:21Yeah.
11:22We'll remind you.
11:23I know.
11:25We'll spend a few minutes in my room tonight saying goodnight, and then he'll go to Vanessa's room.
11:30Oh, so typically that's what happens?
11:31Yeah.
11:34In this house, the kids are used to their dad alternating which wife he sleeps with.
11:39I've got some questions reserved just for the grown-ups.
11:47I'm trying to imagine my boyfriend sat on a sofa with another woman stroking her leg.
11:55I'd be a bit like...
11:57At this point, it barely registers.
12:00I think when I first got married, it was different because it's just kind of like, you know, maybe feelings of jealousy or just feelings of just wondering what that meant.
12:11Yeah. There were days that, you know, him being physical with Vanessa bothered me.
12:15And so, I won't say jealousy is never a problem anymore, but when it does come up, I've recognized that I just need to take a step back.
12:24I really appreciate your honesty because the rehearsed answer is we never have problems with jealousy.
12:32Right.
12:33I don't believe that when anybody says that.
12:34Everything is completely fine.
12:35Yeah.
12:37You know, those feelings of jealousy are extremely powerful, like going to the movies and leaning closer to one, and this one will be in tears for two or three days.
12:50You love her more than me. Oh, my gosh.
12:54I feel the only way is to be exactly equal. Never do anything here that I don't do here.
12:59Sharice knows that tomorrow or the next night, I'll be sitting on the couch with my hand on Vanessa's knee.
13:05Do you sometimes prefer one person over the other?
13:08Um...
13:10Picture it, like...
13:11Oh, she's going to answer for me.
13:13Well, she'd like to. You looked like you were struggling.
13:15Oh, she's my favorite.
13:17No, there are times where...
13:20If I was, like, really in a bad mood...
13:22Yeah, if she'd been really pissy all day...
13:23He'd be like, Sharice, we're going.
13:26But I have to be careful.
13:27You're hyper-aware when you're around two wives.
13:32It's a difficult thing for the ladies, but it's hugely difficult for the man.
13:39It's funny when he sort of alludes to the idea that the hardship falls on his shoulders.
13:46When, in actual fact, I think the women have had to put in a lot of the work and they have to try and get a grip on their jealousy.
13:55Well, let's go say goodnight, hun.
13:59Thank you for today, guys.
14:01Yes, we will see you tomorrow.
14:02See you tomorrow.
14:03Bright and early.
14:04Yep.
14:05All right.
14:07Once Geoff said goodnight to Sharice, he'll head to bed with Vanessa.
14:11Thank you, Geoff.
14:12Thank you, Geoff.
14:13Thank you, you're welcome.
14:15So, they will just take how long?
14:19If they're, like, want to talk about something really serious, maybe that's happened or whatever, it could be up to an hour.
14:26But, typically, it's about 10 to 15 minutes.
14:30Yeah.
14:31Because she's my favourite.
14:34Just kidding.
14:36With Sharice in one room.
14:38You want to finish watching the movie?
14:39No.
14:40I think that's a good idea.
14:42And her husband about to sleep with his other wife.
14:45Time for me to make a quick exit.
14:48Right, sleep well.
14:49You too.
14:50Thank you very much.
14:51Thank you, everyone.
14:53You're not going to have to worry, but there are, you know, bears and cougars.
14:58Are there bears out there?
14:59It's not a likely scenario.
15:01Yay!
15:02And if the door's bolted, you'll be just fine.
15:03Why are you scaring her at this point in the night?
15:05No, I'm going to be fine.
15:07Right, see you tomorrow, guys.
15:08All right.
15:11I don't know where the hell I'm going, by the way.
15:13Because, honest to God, it's pitch black.
15:16Look.
15:21How am I supposed to see anything?
15:24How am I supposed to fight off the bears?
15:29It's been a puzzling first day.
15:35Like, the obvious beneficiary is Jeff.
15:41But they've been in this marriage for 14, 15 years.
15:47The sort of obvious question is, what is in it for the women?
16:03How was last night?
16:05Last night was okay.
16:07It's a bit cold.
16:09It's so quiet.
16:11No bears, you'll be pleased to hear.
16:15Waking up to my first morning on the family's 20-acre homestead.
16:20Hi, good morning.
16:22Good morning.
16:24I'm keen to get Jeff's wives' take on why they chose to be part of a polygamist family.
16:30Have you ever milked a goat, Stacy?
16:33I think I've milked a cow.
16:34Okay.
16:35Similar.
16:36Yeah.
16:37Okay.
16:38Would you like to come out with me, then?
16:42Relax.
16:43She can feel it if you're nervous.
16:45Yeah, I need to just vibe.
16:47You have to commit.
16:49Okay, I'm going.
16:51I'm sorry.
16:52I'm so sorry.
16:53I don't know why.
16:54I'm, like, not...
16:55Sorry.
16:56Okay.
16:59Come on, baby.
17:01There we go.
17:03Charisse was brought up in a polygamist Mormon family,
17:06and I'm wondering how big a part that played in her decision to marry Jeff.
17:11There we go.
17:12Is that enough?
17:13It's a start.
17:15When you were growing up, your father had multiple wives.
17:18Yeah.
17:19He had two wives.
17:20I absolutely love both my moms.
17:23And my grandfather spent time in jail because he was a polygamist.
17:27And I was always afraid growing up that they would come take my dad away,
17:31that we would get turned over to the state, because I had two moms.
17:36If people don't see a healthy version of this lifestyle,
17:40then they're always going to assume the worst,
17:42because nobody ever reads about this type of stuff unless they come across
17:45something awful and it hits the newspapers and people would only read about
17:48the bad guys, so to speak.
17:50This can be a very stabilizing, healthy environment.
17:55Charisse, when she talks about her faith,
18:00she talks so... like she's full of passion.
18:03This has always been part of her culture.
18:07I can't help wondering how this family's unique setup is viewed outside their cozy bubble.
18:15Let's go shopping!
18:17Let's go!
18:19And I'm hoping a rare trip away from home will reveal more about how they're seen by the local community.
18:25You know, this is a country-western fishing, hunting, gun store.
18:32So, you know, it pleases the male heart.
18:36Yeah.
18:38We might get some good looks while we're there.
18:46Jeff is keen for me to check out some suitable farm footwear.
18:49Those are cute. Also functional.
18:52Let me see. I don't know what they are.
18:54Oh, really?
18:56Certified work boots.
18:58How's it going, sir?
18:59Hi! How are you?
19:00What's your name?
19:01My name's Tanner.
19:02Nice to meet you. I'm Stacy.
19:04Do you know Jeff and Charisse?
19:06I've helped them with a few things in the store before.
19:09And do you know that Jeff has more than one wife?
19:13Say I did not.
19:14You did not know.
19:15Surprise!
19:16You probably thought this was my daughter.
19:18Probably, huh?
19:21Did you?
19:22I did!
19:24Jeff has two wives.
19:25Yep.
19:26What do you make of polygamy?
19:28You know, that works for some people.
19:29I think it's like a lot of things in life.
19:31If you can make it work and it makes you happy, you know, go for it.
19:35Would it work for you?
19:37I've had relationships in the past where it didn't quite work out.
19:40Oh! So you have experience?
19:42Yep.
19:43About 13 years ago with my ex-fiance.
19:46I was one of two partners for her.
19:47Oh, so there was one woman, two men?
19:49Yep.
19:50Oh, okay.
19:52Did you ever feel jealous?
19:54At the beginning, because it feels weird and new.
19:57Especially when you're not comfortable in it.
19:59I would get jealous.
20:01So you're saying that situation wouldn't work for you?
20:05Two men, one woman?
20:06Nope.
20:07Not happening.
20:08Not happening.
20:09Not happening.
20:10There will be people screaming at the television.
20:13There will.
20:14You are so hypocritical.
20:16It's okay for you to have two women, but you wouldn't be down with it being flipped on the
20:21heart's head.
20:22I didn't say that I wouldn't support or even allow other people to choose that lifestyle.
20:27Very important.
20:28I just couldn't live it myself.
20:29I think I would struggle having two men.
20:33That doesn't make sense to me.
20:36I'm about to offend every feminist everywhere.
20:38Okay.
20:40I like alpha males.
20:43So you enjoy Jeff being the dominant figure?
20:48Yes, and if there were two men like that, they would clash.
20:52And you know that.
20:53It wouldn't be...
20:54That's what happened, isn't it?
20:55Yeah.
20:56It wouldn't be the piece that I enjoy.
20:59There's this stigma around polygamy that these young girls are forced to marry older men.
21:04And it was my choice.
21:05Nobody arranged this.
21:07This was us.
21:08We chose each other.
21:09We were compatible and we loved each other.
21:13I'll take these, I reckon.
21:16How do you feel wearing those boots?
21:18I feel like a strong, fierce cowgirl.
21:21It was worthwhile me hanging out with Cherise and Jeff because I just get the impression that they are so in sync.
21:34I don't think she's kind of blindly following Jeff in any way.
21:39I think this is how she wants to live.
21:43Back at the ranch.
21:44So here's the deal.
21:45I have two trees that I think we need to remove.
21:49OK.
21:51OK.
21:52All right.
21:54My spanking new cowboy boots are about to be put to work.
21:58You look pretty darn fashionable for a woodsy woman.
22:01So hold it more in the middle there.
22:03There you go.
22:06Feel the power.
22:11Jeff's impressed.
22:12Timber!
22:14Woohoo!
22:15You did good.
22:16Wow.
22:17But there's something still confusing me about this family's Mormon faith.
22:21Back in the day, that religion said, you're fine to have multiple wives.
22:26Right.
22:27Then that religion changed its mind.
22:28And so you're on board with what they were referencing.
22:31Right.
22:3218, 90.
22:34Why has it been condemned?
22:37Why have so many other people got it wrong and you've got it right?
22:40I believe that God cherishes the agency and the freedom that he's given to his children.
22:46But he also allows for things to be experienced.
22:51God says, if you choose, you may do this.
22:55And I got to the point where I believed that to follow the direction of what God said originally,
23:01was worth the risk of disobeying what the leaders of the church say now.
23:08Two enough? Do you want more?
23:11Um, I love my family.
23:15And yes, I'm open. I'm open to a third wife.
23:20Really?
23:21Absolutely.
23:22Dear Father in Heaven, we're so very thankful for the opportunity to be gathered together as a family.
23:38My weekend with Mormon polygamist Jeff and his two wives has just got even more interesting.
23:46That we could have a home to be in, a place to be safe. Amen.
23:50Amen.
23:52Jeff wants to add a third wife to his family of 11.
23:56And I'm not sure what to make of this revelation.
24:00Pull this up.
24:02So, like, here are folks who have messaged me in the last two or three days.
24:07I haven't answered these.
24:09There's so many people sliding into your DMs, Jeff.
24:12She looks great.
24:14And that's when you start to wonder, is when they look great.
24:16Because you wonder what's, you wonder, what is, who is this, right?
24:20It could be anybody carrying a catfish.
24:23Jeff's using modern technology, a plural partner's dating site, to help him with this centuries-old search for a third wife.
24:32Can you imagine me trying to go on a regular dating site and then how do I say, oh, by the way, I have two wives.
24:38Nah, it's not going to work.
24:39I'm not going to deceive anybody into thinking something's different than it is.
24:43I mean, does it feel slightly peculiar that you're speaking to other women in one of your wives' bedrooms?
24:53Like right now?
24:54Yeah.
24:56Well, not me.
24:58Well, here we are.
24:59Because we are not thinking that we're going to get married going forward.
25:02Luckily, they trust me.
25:03No, this is the only quiet spot in the house.
25:05Okay.
25:06It's quiet.
25:07There's a couch.
25:09No, the lights went off.
25:10We lost our power.
25:11It could be you guys are stuck here for years.
25:14Oh, fun.
25:15Who's going to marry who?
25:21I retreat to my tree house before I get sucked into the polygamist lifestyle.
25:28Just so bonkers.
25:31Jeff is charismatic.
25:32I think he likes to be in charge.
25:35I think it's fair to say, like, how sustainable is this?
25:38Because if a third wife does come along, where does that leave Vanessa and Sharice?
25:47Thankfully, I'm not left in the dark for long.
25:51All right, compress your teeth, girls. Get ready for bread.
25:54Good.
25:55Done.
25:56Yay.
25:59And I head back indoors to Vanessa's room.
26:03Hey.
26:04Hey, Stacey.
26:05Vanessa, can I come in?
26:06Absolutely.
26:07Do you mind?
26:08Yeah, have a seat.
26:09Get comfy.
26:10It's so quiet up here.
26:11Yeah.
26:12Isn't it?
26:13Yeah, this is my place of recovery.
26:16This is my place of recovery.
26:17Yes, I know.
26:20Vanessa married Jeff a year before he wed Sharice.
26:24And I'm keen to hear her take on this unique family set up.
26:28Why were you up for marrying someone who was into polygamy?
26:34Both of my parents came from fundamentalist families.
26:38So I was very familiar with it.
26:41It was always one of those things that I just thought,
26:43I think that's something that's good.
26:45After a lot of thought and prayer,
26:47I just really came to the conclusion.
26:48I'm like, you know what?
26:49I would.
26:50I really would.
26:51And then shortly thereafter, I got introduced to Jeff
26:54and, you know, the rest is history.
26:57If somebody else is introduced,
27:00how do you really feel about that?
27:03I am very open to it.
27:05I enjoy my female friendships
27:07and having that female presence in the home
27:10is not intimidating for me anymore.
27:12Would it always have to be a younger woman with no kids?
27:17You know, the age gap, it's a real thing.
27:20You know, when I married Jeff, I was a virgin.
27:23When Sharice married Jeff, she was a virgin.
27:25You know, he and I have 22 years between us,
27:27but there gets a point where it's too much.
27:31Yeah. And what kind of attributes would she have to have?
27:33I think I would honestly look for somebody who shares a foundational belief in Christianity for one.
27:45Somebody who wants to be a part of the family and somebody who is honest.
27:51Also, you know, you're not just sharing a husband.
27:53She's going to be around your kids.
27:55Mm-hmm.
27:56She's massive.
27:57Yeah.
27:59Be back in a minute, hon.
28:00All right.
28:02It seems Vanessa and Sharice both love their husbands.
28:06You got time for a quick goodnight?
28:08Sure.
28:09Sweet.
28:11Love you.
28:13And are genuinely happy to share him.
28:16See you in the morning.
28:18With one or more wives.
28:20Sebastian, that is so kind.
28:42You sweetheart.
28:48Wow.
28:49Did you catch that?
28:50She just called your mom.
28:51Oh, am I?
28:52My mom.
28:53Oh, give me five.
28:54Who is that?
28:56My mom.
28:58Ever since she was little, all women have been mom.
29:02All men have been dad.
29:03That's her world.
29:04There you go.
29:07Who to call mom may soon become even more confusing.
29:11Today, Geoff has a Zoom call with a lady he's been chatting to online.
29:16I know a lady in Luton.
29:17What?
29:18Yeah.
29:19My hometown.
29:21That's kind of fun, huh?
29:23You're speaking to a lady?
29:24Yeah.
29:25In England?
29:26Yes.
29:27She's from Luton?
29:28She's from that area, yes.
29:29Are you serious?
29:30I'm absolutely serious.
29:31Is the idea that she might become wife number three?
29:35Well, I don't know if I'd go that far.
29:36And that might really spook her, you know, because we're just friends.
29:39Right.
29:40So funny.
29:41Her name is Marie.
29:43Marie.
29:44Mm-hmm.
29:46Hello, Marie.
29:47Hello.
29:48Hi.
29:49How are you?
29:50I'm good.
29:51Are you alright?
29:52Yeah, I am.
29:53Yeah, I am.
29:54Maria's happy for us to film the chat, but has asked that we don't show her face.
29:58Where are you from?
29:59I'm from Luton, Stopsley.
30:01I went to Stopsley High School.
30:04I went to Stopsley High School and moved to Ashcroft.
30:07I know Ashcroft, really.
30:09This is so bonkers.
30:11Who's geeking out here?
30:12I am geeking out.
30:13Yeah.
30:14Like, what?
30:15Mm-hmm.
30:16There's not many polygamists over here, though, so you do need to travel over there.
30:20But, yeah.
30:21Oh, I'm delighted to meet you.
30:24Yeah.
30:25What is it about polygamy that interests you?
30:29Well, I do believe in God and I do believe in the Mormon church and stuff.
30:34Polygamy, for me, is not religion.
30:36It's what's happened in my past.
30:38So, I don't have family and I've got three children.
30:41Mm-hmm.
30:42Their dad is not involved.
30:43Okay.
30:44So, I've raised my kids on my own.
30:45And what really pulls me is the sister wives.
30:49It's that friendship.
30:50And if something was to happen to me and I'm gone, I know there's at least one or two
30:55other women that are going to raise my kids.
30:57Yeah.
30:58And my kids are going to be loved.
30:59Yeah, I can understand how you've come to that conclusion.
31:02Because, in essence, you're saying you're just prioritising your kids.
31:05To make sure that they're looked after no matter what.
31:08But it's not just about my kids.
31:10It's I've had times, in my darkest times, where life's too hard.
31:15And I've sat there and I've thought I'm trapped.
31:18If I had sister wives, they're who I'm going to turn to.
31:23Not just my husband.
31:24And I know that they have my back 100%.
31:28And I'm never alone.
31:30That's the pull.
31:31Right.
31:32You and Geoff have a really lovely friendship.
31:35Do you see this going anywhere?
31:37We do have a connection.
31:40But obviously I need to go and visit and see if that is there or if it is just a friendship.
31:46Right.
31:47Listen, thank you so much for letting me sit in on this.
31:51I really do appreciate it.
31:52All right, darling.
31:53Thanks so much, Marie.
31:54All right.
31:55I will speak to you later.
31:56All right.
31:58We'll see you.
31:59Bye-bye.
32:03There we go.
32:04I feel like she wanted to talk to me because she feels there are misconceptions surrounding
32:11your set up.
32:13To express something that is so different.
32:16Not the status quo.
32:17Oh, yeah.
32:18Yes.
32:19It takes great courage.
32:20Talk about a strong woman.
32:22Do you fancy Marie?
32:25I do.
32:27But I need to keep it at the level of friends until she comes to visit when so.
32:32Who knows?
32:33Watch this space.
32:34There could be a Lutonian in hot springs.
32:36It is a possibility.
32:38All right.
32:39If you guys can see anything that needs to be picked that's ready, then go ahead and pick
32:52it.
32:53Jeff's desire for a third wife has left me wondering what impact the parents' polygamist
32:58lifestyle has on the next generation.
33:01You guys are going to learn about the Bill of Rights, the Constitution.
33:05So who did it say gave us our rights?
33:08God.
33:09God.
33:10Yes.
33:11Endowed by our Creator.
33:12Given to us by God.
33:14Like many Mormons, the old judges have chosen to homeschool their eight kids.
33:19Do you guys think that liberty is important to God?
33:21It's very important to God.
33:23And want to raise them to have a good understanding of their modest, self-sufficient lifestyle.
33:29Daniel, would you feed the big goats?
33:31Yeah.
33:33No, we fed them.
33:34Do the baby goats need to be fed?
33:36Oh, look at the piglet.
33:39There's a pile of them.
33:40To live self-sufficiently, the family rear and slaughter farm animals for food.
33:46This big guy right here?
33:48Yeah.
33:49That's my boar.
33:50His name's Kevin Bacon.
33:52And so what, these are his ladies?
33:54Yep.
33:55He's a polygamist.
33:56He's a polygamist.
33:57A polygamist pig.
33:58Pig-a-ligamist.
33:59So he's got three ladies.
34:01Yes.
34:02You've only got two, Jeff.
34:03I'm falling behind.
34:04You're falling behind.
34:06It sounds like it's important to you, Jeff, that you teach your kids, your family, to
34:12try and live off the land.
34:14It's very important.
34:15Very fast.
34:16Dana's been butchering most of our animals for the last couple of years.
34:20Yeah.
34:21Probably about, I think, four years now.
34:22And you're how old?
34:23Do you mind me?
34:24Fourteen.
34:25So you start when you were, like, ten?
34:27About, yeah.
34:28Dana and I actually are going to butcher this pig.
34:32Okay.
34:33He's perfectly capable of doing all these things on his own.
34:38You think he's ready right there?
34:39I just let it there.
34:40That's why I wanted the little one.
34:41It's clear Dane is already following in his father's Mormon footsteps.
34:59But I wonder how he feels about one day creating his own polygamist family.
35:04Do you mind if I have a quick chat with you?
35:07Sure.
35:08What's your experience been growing up in this kind of environment?
35:15Uh, I feel more mature than other kids.
35:20Yeah.
35:21I would say you're quite mature, Dane.
35:23Yeah.
35:24And do you mind me asking, and you don't have to answer, have you got a girlfriend?
35:28No.
35:29No.
35:30My parents don't really want me dating until 16, but it kind of sucks.
35:37And do you imagine that you will live a life similar to your dad's?
35:43One partner or multiple partners?
35:46Well, I'm sure it would start with one.
35:48Yeah.
35:49And then I'd decide from there.
35:51I'm leaning toward multiple, but I'll have to decide after one if I'm ready for multiple.
35:57Little Dane is great.
35:58Yeah.
35:59I've never heard a 14-year-old say that they're quite up for multiple wives before.
36:10As tonight's my last night, the Oldridges have invited me to a farewell barbie.
36:15And they've arranged a South Dakota mode of transport to get there.
36:19Stacy Dooley, I would like you to meet Dooley the horse.
36:22I am not okay that this horse is called Dooley.
36:25Different spelling, but I'll bet it means the same thing.
36:28Yeah.
36:29Grab on the saddle.
36:30All right.
36:31Leg over.
36:32You don't have any heels, so don't let your feet slip through.
36:39Dooley on a Dooley.
36:41Ciao for now, Jeff.
36:43Wow.
36:44There she goes.
36:45Dooley on a Dooley.
36:48This is so fun.
36:50Oh, my God.
36:51This is so fun.
36:53At times like this, the family's life seems idyllic.
36:57But with Jeff hoping to invite a third wife into his family, I wonder if the harmony could
37:02soon be broken.
37:04Isn't that view amazing?
37:06I mean, it's really, really spectacular.
37:11So I sat in with Jeff when he was having a conversation with Marie.
37:16How much do you know about her?
37:18I know a little bit about her.
37:20Not a lot.
37:21I know if things got more serious between her and Jeff that she'd come out and visit.
37:25And at that point in time, I guess I'd make a more of an effort.
37:30I feel like you would have to like her, no?
37:34Because she'd be coming into your family.
37:36I mean, it'd be great if we liked her.
37:41And...
37:42It wouldn't work if we didn't like her.
37:44It just wouldn't.
37:45No, it definitely wouldn't work in this setting with us all living in the same home.
37:49And who has the final say?
37:51Say, you know, Jeff's super keen, you two aren't as sold.
37:55Is it ultimately up to Jeff?
37:57Ultimately, it is.
37:59Because at the end of the day, it's his marriage with her and her marriage with him.
38:03But it affects you.
38:04It affects us deeply.
38:06And so we are always trying to be on the same page.
38:08Yeah.
38:09And, you know, if Cherise or I was really against it, that would hold a lot of weight.
38:14Ultimately, at the end of the day, it's Jeff's decision.
38:18I'm surprised the choice that could rock this family's stability is left solely to the man of the house.
38:24I think it should be a joint decision because it's the women that have to really shift things.
38:32And it's the women that have to keep their jealousy in check.
38:35It's just such a big ask.
38:37It's such a big ask.
38:39Chloe, can you come with me?
38:43This place is really beautiful.
38:45Oh, it's just gorgeous.
38:46Really beautiful.
38:47Wow.
38:48We do.
38:49Misty, we did her baptism right here.
38:50Did you?
38:51Did you get baptized here?
38:52Uh-huh.
38:53And what does it mean to be baptized?
38:54It means that you can, like, believe in Christ and a lot of stuff that is hard to explain.
39:10Yeah.
39:11Who baptizes the kids?
39:12I do.
39:13You're allowed to baptize them?
39:14The church would say no.
39:15I received the priesthood in the church before they excommunicated me.
39:32And they would say that, by being excommunicated, that that's gone.
39:37But, um, I don't believe that it is.
39:40We've had the Spirit of God in our home.
39:42And, uh, that's my duty and my right as a father.
39:45And so I baptize them.
39:47And all your kids seem to me fairly religious.
39:51They all believe in God?
39:52I think so.
39:53It's who their parents are.
39:56They don't know any other life.
39:57I wouldn't be surprised if most of Jeff's kids consider adopting the same polygamist Mormon
40:06life as their parents.
40:09Watch your marshmallow, honey.
40:12What do you make of your family setup?
40:14Well, I like it.
40:16I didn't really think about it much when I was young.
40:19It just felt normal to me.
40:21I wondered why everyone else only had one mom.
40:23It was funny.
40:25I like how I live.
40:27It's fun.
40:28I've got lots of siblings.
40:29Lots of parents to go to.
40:30All those kind of things I'd need.
40:31More people to take care of me.
40:33And more people to get in trouble, baby.
40:34Yeah.
40:35Yeah.
40:36Would you mind another mom?
40:38Yeah, I'd be fine with that.
40:39I'd want to meet them first, I guess.
40:41Yeah.
40:42You'd want to, like, give them the once-over.
40:44Yeah.
40:45I love you, Daddy.
40:46I love you, too.
40:47Oh.
40:48What is clear is that this is a loving, tight-knit family.
40:53Do you know what?
40:54I will miss my trusty treehouse.
41:08It's my final morning in South Dakota.
41:13It's definitely a patriarchal set-up.
41:17Geoff is definitely in charge.
41:19But the women aren't oppressed.
41:21Like, the women want to be here.
41:23Geoff has said himself, you know, lots of Mormons will be so opposed to how he is conducting himself.
41:34He would say, I'm following the origins.
41:40They went off the initial script.
41:44The truth is, the only person that knows what makes Geoff tick is Geoff.
41:51You know, I could spend weeks here and none of us will ever really know whether he has got two wives and hopes to have more because he truly in his heart of heart believes that that is what God wants him to do.
42:05Chloe, I'm leaving, baby, I'll see you later.
42:09Or, he just likes women and this is quite a useful reason.
42:16Goodbye, young lady.
42:17You've been a good sport.
42:19Thank you so much.
42:20Thank you so much.
42:21Thank you so much.
42:22Really.
42:23Actually, it does feel like a happy home.
42:25I can't imagine this would ever work for me, but so what?
42:29Well, we will try and kind of dissect things because it doesn't feel familiar.
42:35That doesn't mean that it can't work.
42:38Right.
42:39That's me.
42:40Bye, Stacy.
42:41Bye.
42:42Bye.
42:43Bye, babe.
42:44See you.
42:45Bye.
42:46Bye.
42:47Bye.
42:48Bye.
42:49Bye.
42:50Bye.
42:59Bye.
