00:51Hello and welcome to From the South. I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
01:01We begin with the news.
01:02On Thursday, the Venezuelan government updated on the ongoing operation to dismantle terrorist plans by criminal groups linked to the extreme far-right opposition.
01:22In a press conference, the Minister of Interior, Justice and Peace of the South American nation, Justalo Cabello,
01:28shared part of the evidence that has been gathered during the probe into the destabilizing acts.
01:34In this regard, the authorities stressed on this criminal group's ties with Colombia
01:39as he informed of a criminal alliance made up of drug traffickers, conspirators and criminal gangs
01:45currently protected by former Colombian presidents Álvaro Uribe, Iván Duque, Andrés Pastrana and Juan Manuel Santos.
01:52In this context, Cabello assured the state security forces continue to work to maintain peace in the country
01:58in the face of those who attempt to generate chaos and destroy the tranquility of its citizens.
02:04For quite some time, almost six, seven months now, we have been denouncing a criminal alliance,
02:18a criminal alliance that has been constituted now publicly declared by these sectors of the opposition in a legion.
02:27A criminal alliance where drug traffickers, conspirators and criminal gangs of all kinds are included.
02:40Venezuela's Minister of the Interior, Justice and Peace, Justalo Cabello, denounced that terrorist plans
02:46are being directed by extremist sectors linked to the current U.S. administration.
02:52These operations are always, always under the direction of the U.S. government,
02:59of extremist sectors within the administration that currently governs the United States.
03:09In addition, Cabello stated that the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service have been saved civilians
03:14after removing explosive devices from the area.
03:19How many innocent people could have died?
03:22How many innocent people could have died on the bus where they were transporting that,
03:27if it had been activated?
03:29Our men from the Seben, with all the precaution, the men and women of the Seben,
03:35because it had not exploded, arrived and collected this.
03:39Imagine if this had exploded at that moment.
03:42With solemn ceremonies, Colombia commemorates the 215th anniversary of its armed forces
03:52and the 206th anniversary of the Battle of Boyaca.
03:55Hundreds of citizens gathered to commemorate the 215th anniversary of the founding of Leticia Amazonas in the main park.
04:02The military ceremony was led by President Gustavo Petro, accompanied by military leaders and civil authorities.
04:09He emphasized that the celebration of this important date, which marked Colombian independence,
04:15was not held at the Boyaca Bridge monument for the first time in history,
04:20because it is currently the subject of a voter dispute.
04:23In this regard, the head of state called for the Amazon to be saved and warned that although Peru is not the enemy,
04:30Colombia will not allow itself to lose territory.
04:35Ecuadorian trade unions, social and political groups will mobilize this Thursday to protest against the neoliberal measures of Daniel Novoa's government.
04:47The civilians will take to the streets in several provinces of Ecuador, starting in the capital city of Quito,
04:54in front of the Ecuadorian Social Security Institute and heading to the Constitutional Court.
04:59The protests are in rejection of the suspension of laws, such as public integrity and national solidarity,
05:06as well as the merger of ministries and other measures promoted by the government.
05:11Likewise, various sectors oppose the administrative efficiency plan announced by the executive,
05:17which includes institutional restructuring and the dismissal of public servants.
05:22The Uruguayan Health Federation is holding a partial strike in protest against the wage policies imposed by the government.
05:47The protests took place in the capital city of Montevideo, from the Ovalesca to the Ministry of Economy, demanding jobs, wages and health care.
05:56The union group condemned the wage guidelines presented by the executive branch for the private health sector,
06:02which affects the financial stability of workers.
06:05The sector proposes that the criteria be similar to historical ones, such as future inflation, with an upward adjustment after 12 months,
06:14and real growth if the economy experiences a growth trajectory.
06:19An Argentine scientist from the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research held a vigil outside their headquarters to protest against budget cuts to the sector.
06:37On Wednesday, demonstrators gathered at the headquarters in Buenos Aires to dissent against layoffs and low wages supported by the administration of Javier Millet.
06:47The scientific organization lost 4,000 jobs in the last year between unjustified layoffs, frozen contracts and resignations due to the loss of employee benefits after a 21% budget cut.
07:00Millet's administration has made bureaucratic cuts to research projects that contribute to the nation's development.
07:07And the government of the United States President Donald Trump rose up to 50 million the reward for the capture of President of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro.
07:20In this context, Foreign Affairs Minister Ivan Hill took to his social media and tweet in Telegram,
07:27assuring that Pamela Bondi's pathetic reward is the most ridiculous smokescreen we have ever seen.
07:34While we dismantle the terrorist plots orchestrated from her country, this woman comes out with a media circus to please Venezuela's defeated far right.
07:44We are not surprised coming from her, the same person who promised a non-existent secret list of Epstein's and who wallows in scandals involving political favours.
07:56Her show is a joke, a desperate distraction from her own miseries.
08:01The dignity of her homeland is not for sale.
08:04We repudiate this crude political propaganda operation.
08:09And now we have a short break coming up, but remember you can join us on TikTok at Telesur English,
08:19where you'll find news in different formats, news updates and more.
08:22We'll be right back, stay with us.
08:24Welcome back to From the South.
08:34The Chief of Staff of the Belarusian Armed Forces Major General Pavel Nikolaevich Muraveiko arrived in Cuba to further strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and cooperation between Havana and Minsk.
08:47The Belarusian High Command took part in a busy work agenda, including visits to military units, industries in the sector and training academies.
08:57The official visit aims to strengthen bilateral ties and promoting the exchange of experiences in defense of national security.
09:04The visit also served as an opportunity to pay tribute to historical Cuban figures and to reaffirm the mutual commitment to sovereignty and historical memory of the peoples.
09:15The U.S. government is increasingly relying on local private for-profit detention facilities to hold migrants detained by ICE after the number of arrests has increased by 49% since the beginning of the year.
09:36According to the Trump administration, the government had to rely on up to 150 local jails to hold migrants arrested by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement ICE.
09:48The Immigration Agency said that a total of 55,568 migrants have been held in custody in the first six months of the year,
09:58who were placed in county and federal prisons and detention centers such as Alligator Alcatraz in Florida.
10:04Other prisons report an average of at least 10,547 migrants held in 80 local jails between May and June,
10:12a figure that was not reported by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency.
10:17A U.S. federal judge ordered Thursday a suspension to construction at the so-called Alligator Alcatraz detention center in Florida,
10:31as an attorney argues whether it violates environmental laws.
10:35According to U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams ruling, the facility can continue operating and holding detainees for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement,
10:44but workers will be buried from adding any new filing, paving or infrastructure for the next 14 days.
10:52Environmental groups and the Mikosuke tribe have asked Williams to issue a preliminary injunction to halt operations and further construction.
11:02The suit claims the project threatens environmentally sensitive wetlands that are home to protected plants and animals
11:10and would reverse billions of dollars' worth of environmental restoration.
11:15On Thursday, the British government arrested the first migrants to cross the Channel as part of its anti-migrant agreement with France.
11:30Prime Minister Keir Starmer and President Emmanuel Macron signed this agreement back on July 10.
11:36It basically involves returning 50 migrants to France each week and only accepting those who have been granted asylum in Paris.
11:46Although the United Nations Refugee Agency has prized it, human rights organizations assert that it is only a symbolic measure with electoral effect.
11:56Moreover, they warned that the London and Paris plan criminalizes migrants, ignores their dignity and fails to tackle human trafficking networks.
12:05The Indian government firmly rejected Thursday the new 25% tariffs announced by the Trump Administration calling the decision an unfair and unjustified measure.
12:23The U.S. move, which comes on top of a similar tax imposed weeks ago, seeks to punish New Delhi for its purchase of Russian oil.
12:32However, India recalled that other countries also buy crude from Moscow based on their own national interests.
12:38Indian Foreign Minister Randir Jaiswal regretted Washington's decision and affirmed that his government will take all necessary steps to protect its nation's interests and guarantee the energy security of the Indian people.
12:52Brazil and India evaluate how to deal with the new international economic scenario in the context of the new U.S. tariffs in effect.
13:07During a phone conversation on Wednesday, Brazilian President Luis Inácio Lula da Silva and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated the importance of defending multilateralism against Washington's tariff measures.
13:19Both leaders emphasize the need to explore new opportunities for closer economic integration between their countries to address the current situation.
13:28As BRICS partners, India and Brazil are among the nations most affected by U.S. President Donald Trump's startups.
13:35And we have a second show break coming up, but before we invite you to watch a special interview with the Foreign Minister of Mali, Abdoulaye Diab,
13:48that messaged at 8.30 p.m. in Quito and 9.30 p.m. in Caracas, New York and Havana times, this Friday on August 8th, only on Telesur.
13:58Don't go away, we'll be right back.

14:28More than 200,000 children in Gaza are suffering from malnutrition as a result of the blockade preventing humanitarian aid from reaching the area and the extension of the Israeli siege.
14:39Human rights organizations have denounced the Zionist regime for causing a humanitarian catastrophe by almost completely cutting off the supply of food, medicine and basic necessities.
14:49Prior to the total blockade, the United Nations ran around 400 food distribution centers in the enclave.
14:56These have now refused to just four, all of which are under Israeli control.
15:01According to the United Nations data, thousands of Palestinians have been killed by Israeli troops while searching for food.
15:08In Palestine, reporters and press freedom advocates have denounced the extreme situation of press members in Gaza amid continued Israeli attacks on the ongoing aid blockade.
15:27Journalists operating in the coastal enclave have reported that more than five people die of hunger every day due to food shortages as the Tel Aviv regime maintains a tight siege that prevents the entry of humanitarian aid.

15:54For their part, global media outlets have expressed deep concern over the state of press personnel in the street calling on Israel to open the border crossings and allow the entry of necessary aid.
16:06In other news, the World Health Organization warns about the humanitarian crisis and the increase of child starvation cases in Sudan.
16:23The authorities warned that some 770,000 children under five years of age could suffer from acute malnutrition after two years of civil war
16:33and where famine has already been declared in several regions.
16:36According to the entity's report, the population in some regions is periodically feeding itself with animal food.
16:43It also details that in the first half of the year, it has treated 17,000 Sudanese children with complications derived from severe malnutrition.
16:52Iranian authorities seized the shipment of US weapons destined for organizations affiliated with Israeli Mossad.
17:07The shipment was intercepted by members of the intelligence directorate in Sistan and Balochistan province, which confirmed that 210 military items were seized in three operations that were meant to be used in terrorist operations to destabilize the country.

17:41France's largest wildfire in decades was contained after it had burned more than 160 square kilometres of land in the south of the country.
18:07On Thursday evening, the region's top government official announced that the fire, which erupted on Tuesday and tore through the out region, had finally been contained.
18:17The more than 200 villagers who were evacuated were warned not to return home without authorization, as many roads remain blocked and are still dangerous.
18:28The fire swept through 15 communes in the Corburier Mountain region, destroying at least 36 homes.
18:36According to local authorities, one person died in their home and at least 13 others were injured, including 11 firefighters.
18:43And in Argentina, a deep-sea live stream led by local scientists is a sparking fascination among the population while raising alarms over government cuts to the nation's scientific research.
19:02Experts from the U.S. non-profit Smith Ocean Institute Foundation, together with researchers from the country's leading scientific and research body CONICET, are using a roving robot to capture in detail organisms of Mar del Plata's submarine canyon.
19:19The expedition maps the underwater course, collect samples and identify new species, often peaking at some 50,000 simultaneous viewers.
19:30The live stream, which will run until August 10th, is shining a light on the Institute's work, at a moment when its funding is under attack, a crisis produced by President Javier Millet's budget cuts.
19:42More than 700 active fires have been registered in Canada in 2025, burning at least 6.7 million hectares of land and negatively impacting the air quality in various regions of the country.
20:02The provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario and British Columbia are experiencing the main outbreaks in the midst of a season worsened by high temperatures and drought.
20:13In this context, experts have warned about the impact of smoke on people's health.
20:18As they affirm, it contains particles from trees, tires, construction materials and chemicals.
20:24In addition, they warn that inhalation can also irritate the lungs and worsen the symptoms of respiratory conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases.
