National radio host on the Infinity Sports Network, Zach Gelb, previews the Dolphins-Colts Week 1 opener and joins in on the show's outrage at a SportingNews ranking that lists Tua as the 28th best QB in the NFL.
Transcript
00:00Let me go to the NFL here, Galby.
00:03The Dolphins.
00:04So here's my contention.
00:05Dolphins are underdogs at Indianapolis, but I think they're a better team.
00:09I think people are sleeping on the Dolphins.
00:11Let's say the Dolphins.
00:12Healthy week one.
00:14Two was never healthier than week one.
00:16Daniel Jones, Indianapolis.
00:19I think the Dolphins, it's not a must win.
00:23I'm not being silly.
00:24But I think they need to win week one against Indianapolis,
00:27or else I kind of feel like, hmm, what have I believed about this team?
00:31Why is it not coming to fruition?
00:33So it's not a must win.
00:35Is it a can't lose?
00:36Is it a you got to have it?
00:38Well, what is it?
00:39You got to have it.
00:39Let's say you got to have it.
00:41Yeah, I would agree with that.
00:44I've been critical of the Dolphins this offseason.
00:46That's been well documented on this show.
00:48You guys have used me for a lot of views, which is fine.
00:51You know, I need some circumvented salary cap
00:53and find a way to circumvent the salary cap and get extra money from you guys.
00:57So let's start some LLCs.
00:58We're looking for that deal ourselves.
01:00ZG2.
01:01We'll do it through the pivot.
01:02I'll get all this money.
01:03But anyway, getting back to your point,
01:05the Dolphins, who I've been critical of, their start of their schedule.
01:09There's no games where you sit there and you say they're definitely going to win,
01:12but there's no games that you sit there and say they're definitely going to lose.
01:15Indy got some talent with Jonathan Taylor, Tyler Warren, Michael Pittman.
01:19But this is a game that the Dolphins, yes, they should win.
01:22You would think Tua Tunga-Vailoa would be able to be at least a point better
01:26than Daniel Stinky.
01:27Why are they underdogs?
01:28I'm having a tough time figuring out why they're underdogs in the line.
01:32Like, it's one or one and a half.
01:34Why are they not?
01:35Usually the home team, right?
01:37Usually the home team is the three-point favorite.
01:40Right.
01:40But you're telling me, yeah, quarterback, Crowder, like Tua, like I said,
01:45he's never healthier than week one.
01:47And Daniel Jones is nowhere near as good as Tua.
01:52Duck and Jack.
01:54Jack Duck.
01:55Jack Jones, Storm Duck.
01:57People do not believe in Jack Duck.
01:59Yeah, but, I mean, you're telling me that they're scared
02:01that Daniel Jones is going to pick them apart?
02:06Quack, quack, quack, quack, quack, quack.
02:07Quack, quack.
02:09Hey, Gail, we were talking about something earlier this week.
02:12They had Tua at like 29th best quarterback.
02:15Is that on, like, people.
02:19No, they had the Dolphins to the 29th best team.
02:22Yeah, there was a ranking, though, of Tua.
02:25Really?
02:26Sporting News had Tua as the 27th or 28th best ranked quarterback,
02:30starting quarterback.
02:31Was that an actual writer or was that some AI person?
02:34Was that a bot?
02:35I'm canceling my Sporting News subscription, I'll tell you that.
02:38Don't get me wrong.
02:39I think there's flaws with Tua.
02:41I've said this, and Hawk and I have debated this for years.
02:44I say he's good, very good, not great.
02:4729th?
02:48Like, that's got to be fake news.
02:50That can't be a real story.
02:52Because it's guys like, I don't know, who was ahead of them?
02:56It was like young dudes and rookies.
02:58And it's like, it's almost like we know what Tua can do.
03:02Like, I took it as Tua has reached his ceiling.
03:07Do you think Tua has reached his ceiling?
03:09Or has he reached his ceiling with Mike McDaniel?
03:12I think it's both.
03:14I think he's reached his ceiling.
03:17McDaniel and Tua are a partnership.
03:19Can they eventually get a divorce?
03:21Yeah, that's definitely possible.
03:23And Tua would still be the quarterback if they fire McDaniel this season.
03:26But I think what you've seen from Tua is when he plays, he's really good.
03:30I don't think he's someone you're winning a Super Bowl with.
03:32But then there's always that fear factor.
03:34And I know two years ago he got through the season healthy.
03:36Then last year he didn't.
03:37The health is the number one fear factor.
03:40And I hate to sound like a broken record at this point.
03:42But, you know, who knows what happens the next time Tua Tungavailoa suffers another concussion.
03:46We're going to go through the same thing where it's like you'll have Manti Teo on TV who's very close to Tua saying,
03:51I don't want him to play anymore.
03:53And when Tua suffers a concussion because of what we've seen publicly before and how many concussions he suffered,
03:57he's out longer than when any other quarterback in the league suffers a concussion.
04:01This is the list, by the way.
04:03Tua is 28th behind Michael Pennick Jr., J.J. McCarthy, Bryce Young, Justin Fields, Russell Wilson, Geno Smith.
04:10Oh, my God.
04:11Tyler Miltz is in front of Tua?
04:13Kyler Murray is 16.
04:16That's the – Kyler Murray has just as many injuries.
04:20Tua Tungavailoa has been a better pro quarterback than Kyler Murray.
04:23You know what?
04:24This is not good.
04:24They got Cam Ward underneath him.
04:25This is not good.
04:26Cam Ward, I could make an argument, is better than Tua.
04:29We all know your formula, right?
04:30We're all supposed to have contrived debate and crowd is supposed to say something and I'm supposed to disagree, right?
04:35That's what this business is.
04:36We're all in agreement today.
04:38That is horse bleep.
04:40That is terrible.
04:41That's horse hit.
04:43Mike McDaniel?
04:45I was just going to say, I do believe that that's a prevailing thought about Tua around the country.
04:50Not that they may think –
04:5129th?
04:5128th?
04:51Yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:52Not that people might think J.J. McCarthy is better or Kyler Murray, but I think there's this prevailing notion that Tua is not even a good quarterback.
05:04And it's so silly to me.
05:06He is so statistically good.
05:10Just needs to be out there.
05:12Needs a modicum of protection.
05:14I understand he's got, you know, problems, availability being one of them, but man, he's a good quarterback when he's out there and healthy.
05:24I think, Gelb, correct me if I'm wrong, nationally a lot of people think he's a system guy.
05:29He was carried by Tyreek Hill in the only season that he was healthy, and because of the injuries, it's the biggest knock on him.
05:35And those three things together are why people just don't view Tua in the same category as, like, a Jordan Love or a Dak Prescott.
05:43Like, not the upper echelon QBs, but, like, that second to third tier.
05:48I think Dak and Tua are very similar.
05:51Like, I look at Dak – I think Tua could eventually win a playoff game like Dak has, but I don't think you're getting to a Super Bowl.
05:59Like, my top ten quarterbacks – I think Tua is the top 15 quarterback.
06:03My top ten, Mahomes, Allen, Lamar, Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts, Jaden Daniels, Stafford, C.J. Stroud, Baker Mayfield, and Jared Goff.
06:11I think the first seven, you can't debate it.
06:14After that, I think that's when Tua could start.
06:17I think the highest he could be is eighth, and then I think the lowest he could be is probably, like, 14 or 15.
06:24I'd probably say he's, like, the 13th or 12th best quarterback in football.
06:29Mike McDaniel or Tyreek Hill?
06:31Now you're with that?
06:33I'm with him being a top –
06:35We've had debates over this.
06:36I'm with him being a top 15 quarterback.
06:39Like, anyone who says the low end of Tua is a top 15 quarterback in the NFL, I won't fight on that one.
06:45Like, your list of the top ten, hard for me to poke a hole and take one of those guys off for Tua.
06:52Gotcha.
06:53So, but, like, 15?
06:54That's fair.
06:5629?
06:5628?
06:5727?
06:58That's ridiculous.
06:58I hate to do this because sometimes people be like, oh, you're just doing this for clicks, and I'm like, I'm really not.
07:03I just – this is my true thought.
07:05There's no way the person that authored that article could actually think that Tua is closer to the 30th best quarterback in football.
07:13The way they were probably doing it is, who would I rather have right now, J.J. McCarthy or Tua?
07:19And if you think Tua is just constantly hurt and is a product of the system, like Solana said, then you might say, oh, I'd rather have J.J. McCarthy because I think, oh, I'd rather have Kyler Murray because –
07:31But how do you put Kyler at 15?
07:32I can't say it.
07:35I know, he's just as damaged, and I know his injuries really haven't been to the Cabeza, so that's maybe different, but he hasn't been as good as Tua has been in the NFL.
07:43I agree.
07:44No arguments here.
07:46Man, he's built like a 14-year-old.
07:49He's an itsy-bitsy little baby.
07:51Come on, man.
07:52Kyler Murray thing.
07:52That's why I brought it up.
07:53That upsets me.
07:55That was the former athlete saying that, by the way, not us –
08:00No, I would never.
08:01I would never.
08:01Good professional sports talk show host.
08:03There's a new Hockman Burger available at Tucker Duke's in Deerfield Beach.
08:08Can I guess what it is?
08:09Yes.
08:10All right.
08:11A little hamburguesa.
08:13I'm going to say it is blue cheese, bacon, and onions.
08:18You're very close.
08:19You nailed the hamburger portion of it, and you nailed the onions.
08:23So it's a half-pound burger, chili, Fritos, sour cream, shredded cheddar, and raw red onion.
08:39Okay.
08:40You know what?
08:41I'm a little bit surprised because I always see a cutesy, fancy Instagram post that the Hockman Burger is actually not just a burger with no cheese and just avocado spread across it with guacamole with all your avocado toast.
08:57I am actively searching for an avocado toast endorsement because the Hockman Burger, that's a hearty meal, but I should – there should be a Hockman Avocado Toast available somewhere.
09:08Yeah.
09:09You and I should get to the restaurant.
09:10The next time you come to Boca, I take you to Tucker Duke's, and we're going to go get a Hockman Burger, okay?
09:15Okay.
09:16That's it.
09:16Will you eat that?
09:17Will you eat that?
09:17As long – there's no mushrooms, right?
09:19No.
09:20And there's no avocado, correct?
09:22No.
09:23Yep.
09:23Then I'm good.
09:24Chili, sour cream, cheese, red onion.
09:28Yeah.
09:29You supplying the two-ply toilet paper?
09:31I mean, listen, it depends how quickly you eat it.
09:33I'm going to have to run to the bathroom after that.
09:35Hey, avocado is a superfood, y'all, but it's up to testosterone.
09:39Yeah, superfood.
09:40Well, I don't need help there, number one, but number two, I cannot eat avocado.
09:45It does not agree with me.
09:46Really?
09:46I throw up and take large deuce dailies in the toilet when that happens.
09:51Avocado?
09:53Yeah.
09:54Avocado and mushrooms.
09:55That's why I asked.
09:55You got to work on it.
09:56You got to work on it.
09:57No, no.
09:58I used to love it.
10:00I get really sick.
10:02Got to build a stronger constitution.
10:04Exactly.
10:04A lot of throw up and a lot of natty splatties, if you know what I'm saying.
10:09Soft.
10:10Yeah.
10:10It says the guy that eats a stone crab with a fork at a knife.
10:14I was going to say, guy feigns allergy to shellfish because he's scared of the stone crab.
10:20Yeah.
10:21Soft.
10:21Meow.
10:22See you, Gelby.
10:23You got it, guys.
10:24Be well.
10:24Happy football.
10:25All right.
