Seniors cards are no longer accepted for use on Canberra’s buses or light rail with older Canberrans now required to use a MyWay+ card or the app. The ACT government says it will enable better tracking of public transport usage but many older Canberrans are struggling with the change.

00:00For older Canberrans using public transport there's now an extra step.
00:08So people need to be sure that they go and get a Jazzy MyWay Plus card.
00:14In the past older Canberrans simply had to show their seniors card when boarding public transport
00:19but the ACT Government now requires the use of a MyWay Plus card
00:23so it can better track numbers on buses and trams.
00:26If we get a better understanding of where our senior members of the community are travelling,
00:29with being able to design our networks to cater for different demographics.
00:33The change was announced in November and the online requirements have frustrated some older Canberrans.
00:39If they do have a computer they need help to know how to work at all
00:42and how to access all of the departments that they need information from.
00:47Senior groups say it's caused a lot of angst.
00:50We've taken probably six to seven thousand phone calls from seniors wanting to know what to do.
00:55Seniors can get a MyWay Plus card from the BP service station or here at a newsagent.
01:01It's free, you just need proof of your age.
01:04For those who need to pay for some fares you can put money on your card at the newsagent
01:08or just link it to your online account.
01:10People aged over 70 can travel on public transport for free at all times by using the MyWay Plus card.
01:17Those between 60 and 69 can use it to travel for free in off-peak times
01:23but will need to use the card to pay during peak hours.
01:26Give the system a go if you're not sure.
01:28Grab a customer experience officer or a customer service officer if you're on a platform.
01:32If you're at home give the customer experience team a call on that 13 17 10.
01:37Transport Canberra says there will be a grace period of several months to help people adjust.
