Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said the government will crack down on international students applying for asylum after their visas expire. She said around 15,000 students do so each year “even though nothing has changed” in their home countries. 00:00People can stay after their international student visa, they can then work in the UK for another two years as part of a legal process.
00:09But we've seen instead around 15,000 students applying for asylum at the end of their visa,
00:16even though for many of them nothing could change in their home country during that time.
00:20And we will support refugees who have fled persecution, that's why we are bringing students from Gaza to be able to take up places here.
00:27But we don't want to see the asylum system misused by students who simply want to stay for longer.
00:34That's why we've been very clear, we need those numbers to come down.
00:37It's already started to come down as a result of things we've done in the course of this year,
00:41but we need to prevent that misuse of the asylum system.
