Mean Green Blank Lamar 51-0 in Season Opener

North Texas opens the 2025 season with a dominant 51-0 shutout win over Lamar at DATCU Stadium.  Redshirt freshman QB Drew Mestemaker threw for 329 yards and 3 touchdowns while the defense held Lamar to just 31 rushing yards. Ethan Wesloski scored on a fumble recovery as UNT posted its first shutout since 2003 and its largest since 1976. 00:00Here at Dacu Stadium, the Bean Green defeat the Lamar Cardinals 51-0 in the season opener.

00:11It's the first shutout in Bean Green program history since 2003 against Troy.

00:16A huge night for starting quarterback Drew Vestemaker.

00:19It was his second time starting at quarterback for North Texas.

00:23He has 329 passing yards and three passing touchdowns.

00:28But he also had some rushing in there.

00:30One rushing touchdown and 30 rushing yards.

00:33Also a big night for the Bean Green defense, only holding the Lamar Cardinals to 119 yards overall.

00:40Here's what head coach Eric Morris had to say about his defense after the game.

00:44I thought we tackled well on defense just as a whole.

00:47I mean, some of our corners made some phenomenal tackles early.
