00:00Wow, I'm getting a hug, okay?
00:03Welcome to WatchMojo, and in this installment of Must Watch, we're looking at movies,
00:08shows, and more that defined pop culture in August 2025.
00:12Matthew, where are you?
00:15Number 10, Platonic, Season 2.
00:19Gee, Seth Rogen is in every Apple TV Plus show these days.
00:23Platonic reunites Rogen with his neighbor's co-star, Rose Byrne.
00:27Do you want to talk about it again?
00:29I don't.
00:29I'm fine.
00:30It's nothing, not a thing, so there's nothing to talk about.
00:32As the title suggests, though, they don't play romantic partners in this comedy series.
00:37That said, these friends, without benefits, do frequently get caught in the middle of each
00:42other's love lives.
00:43Jane has never been anything but an absolute sweetheart to you.
00:47Uh, that's not true.
00:48It is true.
00:48She said I was nothing.
00:52I bet she had her reasons.
00:54In Season 2, Rogen's will finds himself getting cold feet leading up to his nuptials.
00:59Burns' Sylvia tries to avert disaster, although the engagement inevitably blows up in everyone's
01:05faces, especially the father of the bride.
01:11The chemistry between Rogen and Byrne once again carries the show.
01:15These two may be a recipe for dysfunction, but it's better to clean up a mess together
01:20than stewing the one you created alone.
01:23I'm so sorry.
01:24I'm so sorry.
01:25Don't be sorry.
01:25Just, please stop talking.
01:27Number 9.
01:28Wednesday.
01:29Season 2, Part 1.
01:31It took three years, but Wednesday finally delivered its sophomore season.
01:35Well, the first half, anyway.
01:37Which part of prohibited items don't you understand, young lady?
01:42The part where you believe that cramming hundreds of people into a metal tube flying
01:46through the air creates some sort of utopia where weapons aren't needed.
01:49While the second half won't arrive until September 3rd, this season is off to a solid
01:53start with new additions like Steve Buscemi as principal dorks and Professor Orloff played
01:59by Christopher Lloyd, who's no stranger to this franchise.
02:02One quick question before you go.
02:05Are you aware of any student or member of staff who can control birds?
02:09You made an avian?
02:12Why do you ask?
02:13I'm working on a project about underrepresented outcasts.
02:17We haven't had an avian in Rome for at least 10 years.
02:24We also get to see more of the whole Addams family this season, with Isaac Ordoñez as Pugsley
02:28now attending Nevermore.
02:30He looks different.
02:31I think he's healing.
02:33Yet the show's success still comes down to three components.
02:37Jenna Ortega, who was born to play Wednesday.
02:40Emma Myers, whose colorful turn as Enid perfectly offsets the show's gloomy namesake.
02:46And Tim Burton, who hasn't lost his dark edge.
02:49Also, great to see Burton doing stop motion again.
02:53So he decided to design his own heart.
02:55So that his body could keep up with his dazzling mind.
03:01Number eight, Long Story Short.
03:04Season one, Raphael Bob Waksberg created one of the funniest and most unexpectedly devastating
03:11shows of the 21st century.
03:13Bojack Horseman.
03:14His latest series, Long Story Short, is a horse of a different color.
03:19Do you believe that?
03:20Why are you mad you didn't want to see her?
03:22Not the point.
03:23She RSVP'd, yes.
03:25So would you rather she was here?
03:27Of course not.
03:28But how could she do this to Yoshi?
03:30He'll be devastated.
03:31This is evident in Lisa Hanawalt's character designs, which draw heavily from comic strips.
03:36As far as family circuses go, the Shwoopers are on another level.
03:42What?
03:47I'm going to bed.
03:49My bed.
03:51I'm.
03:52Non-chronologically, the show follows this Jewish-American clan throughout the decades
03:57as they deal with disappointment, death, and the occasional bright spots that make you
04:01grateful for your family, as overbearing as they can be.
04:05We feel like you have been acting very strange since you moved down here.
04:09You didn't call on our anniversary.
04:11It's not like you.
04:12Is that what this is about?
04:14Avi and Shira also didn't call, but that's not so unusual for them.
04:16Is that a necessary detail?
04:18It's context, Avi.
04:19While a change of pace from Bojack, Bob Waxberg brings his signature witty dialogue mixed with
04:25sharp visual jokes and death.
04:27Long story short, check it out on Netflix.
04:30We need happy reasons to be together.
04:33It can't just be funerals and shivers and grave unveilings.
04:37Number 7.
04:38Nobody Too
04:39Nobody was a pleasant surprise thanks to Bob Odenkirk's hard-hitting performance as an unlikely
04:45badass.
04:46The sequel offers more of the same brutal action and biting humor, but Nobody Too simply doesn't
04:52repeat itself.
04:52In fact, Odenkirk's Hutch is tired of his violent routine, desperate for a vacation.
05:04You can't always take the work out of the working man, however.
05:08I left my phone.
05:09Hutch, no!
05:10Trouble has a way of finding Hutch, who tries to balance taking down criminals while creating
05:16precious memories with his family.
05:18What the hell, Hutch?
05:20On our first day?
05:21Well, this is Odenkirk's show.
05:23The film includes some strong supporting work from Connie Nielsen as Hutch's incredibly
05:27understanding wife, and Sharon Stone, in scenery-chewing villain mode.
05:33Vacations don't come easily to Hutch, although for the audience, this is 89 minutes of pure
05:39escapism.
05:39I told you that.
05:41I'm on vacation!
05:45Number 6.
05:46K-pop Demon Hunters
05:47Sing-along Version
05:49Between sinners and K-pop Demon Hunters, 2025 has been a good year for original movies
05:55that mix music with demonic creatures.
05:58Demons have always haunted our world, stealing our souls and channeling strength back to their
06:05king.
06:06The latter film has reached cultural phenomenon status, dominating the Billboard and Netflix
06:11charts since its debut in June, despite streaming for two months.
06:15Fans still showed up in droves to experience the sing-along version on the silver screen.
06:21I'm done hiding, now I'm shining
06:25Not only did it open number one at the box office, but K-pop sold out over a thousand showings.
06:31We're not sure why Netflix didn't give the sing-along version a longer theatrical window
06:36before moving it to streaming.
06:38No one is coming to save you
06:40We would have paid for a big-screen encore.
06:44Regardless, it's safe to say that Netflix has an unprecedented hit that keeps finding
06:49new ways to go viral.
06:51They're listening to the fine, this is what it sounds like
06:55Number 5.
06:57Peacemaker Season 2
06:59Superman has been marketed as the official starts of the DC Universe, although its origin
07:05point is somewhat debatable.
07:07While Peacemaker Season 1 was technically part of the DCEU, Season 2 has cheekily retconned
07:13those ties.
07:14Ironically, Season 2 finds Chris Smith torn between universes.
07:24In one, the public still views him as a joke while he struggles to maintain personal relationships.
07:29In the other, Peacemaker seemingly has everything his heart desires, which must mean something
07:40is about to go terribly wrong.
07:42Breaking and entering into a man's home, that's solid justification for me!
07:47John Cena continues to make the titular character lovable, despite his worst tendencies.
07:52In a world of gods and monsters, Peacemaker doesn't fit in anywhere outside of his ragtag
07:58team of misfits.
07:59That's precisely what draws us to him.
08:02Excuse me?
08:03This guy sucks.
08:04Excuse me?
08:05Um, this is gonna sound weird, but am I supposed to be able to hear you guys?
08:09Number 4.
08:10The Naked Gun
08:11If you asked us in 1995 where Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson would be in 30 years, starring
08:17in the fourth Naked Gun movie probably wouldn't have been on our bingo sheet.
08:21Take a chair.
08:23The biggest surprise is that The Naked Gun is another laugh-a-minute comedy, living
08:27up to the legacies of the Zucker-Abraham's Zucker team and the late Leslie Nielsen.
08:32Hi, Daddy.
08:33It's me, Frank Jr.
08:34Then again, maybe we shouldn't be too shocked given the talent involved.
08:38Says you served 20 years for man's laughter.
08:41You mean manslaughter?
08:42Must have been quite the joke.
08:44After all, director Akiva Schaefer already gave us some of the century's funniest satires,
08:49with pop star Never Stop Never Stopping and Chippendale Rescue Rangers.
08:55Having Seth MacFarlane as a co-producer doesn't hurt either.
08:58The Naked Gun is a throwback to the type of comedy we rarely see anymore, prioritizing jokes
09:05above all else.
09:08Number 3.
09:10Alien Earth Season 1
09:12Alien Earth hasn't made this franchise's continuity any easier to follow, essentially
09:17ignoring Prometheus and Alien Covenants.
09:20We can't be too upset though, as Alien Earth is shaping up to be one of this franchise's
09:25most intriguing offerings since 1986.
09:28What?
09:29Something's on me.
09:30What do you mean something's on me?
09:32Just as showrunner Noah Hawley breathed new life into properties like Fargo and X-Men,
09:38he's done the same for Alien.
09:41It's a research vessel, deep space model.
09:44They must have been collecting specimens.
09:47I thought specimens meant dead.
09:49Taking place before the 1979 film, Alien Earth further blurs the line between man and machine
09:56through the creation of Wendy, a hybrid with a human mind and an artificial body.
10:01The series introduces a Peter Pan allegory, with immortality being among the core themes.
10:08He's not like us lately.
10:09He's not premium.
10:10He can break and bleed and burn, and I made him stay.
10:16Just because you never grow old doesn't mean that Neverland can't be deadly, especially
10:22when a Xenomorph shows up.
10:24Number 2, King of the Hill, Season 14.
10:30King of the Hill isn't the first animated show to make a comeback this year.
10:34You wanna buy some cookies?
10:36Are they gluten-free now?
10:39Yeah, and they are also probably $50 a box.
10:42And by the way, what is a metaverse?
10:45Is that involved here in some way?
10:47What stands out about this revival is that the Hills have matured with the times.
10:51Hank and Peggy are retired, while Bobby ain't a boy anymore.
10:55Hey, Bobby, come give your old man a big handshake.
10:59It's good to see you, Dad.
11:01Let me know when you need me to take over since I'm a professional now.
11:05A professional comedian if you think I'm gonna let you take over for me.
11:09It's a new status quo, which is a risky move in an era where diehard fans of anything resist change,
11:15no matter how minor.
11:16Yet, from the minute we return to Arlen, it's like picking up right where we left off, despite the significant time jump.
11:22Remember, Hank, your beer is our generation's last line of defense against these young punks.
11:28We're the dinosaurs, and they're the virus the dinosaur government created that made them go extinct.
11:35While the season brings back figures like creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels, Saladin K. Patterson takes over as showrunner.
11:43Patterson not only understands what always made these characters great, but what they mean in 2025.
11:50My wife, mother, and our propane delivery woman have supported me through just about every crisis I can think of.
11:57And if we aren't getting support from those women in our lives, it's because we haven't earned it.
12:02Before we continue, be sure to subscribe to our channel and ring the bell to get notified about our latest videos.
12:09You have the option to be notified for occasional videos or all of them.
12:12If you're on your phone, make sure you go into your settings and switch on notifications.
12:161. Weapons
12:21At 2.17am, all but one student from the same 3rd grade class ran away from their homes, disappearing without explanation or a trace.
12:31How could anyone resist a hook like that?
12:41The answer is they can't, which is why Weapons grossed nearly $200 million during its first month in theaters.
12:48Just as he did with Barbarian, director Zach Krager subverts every expectation in a film that throws numerous curveballs.
12:56One of them is Amy Madigan, who gives the most unhinged and unrecognizable performance of her career.
13:03She's the secret weapon here, although the film also includes strong work from Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, and Benedict Wong, among others.
13:11We have a lot of emotional parents here. I think it's best if you keep some distance from this place.
13:16As disturbing as Weapons is, it gives us hope for original storytelling and the theatrical experience.
13:23Where did you go?
13:24What did you watch this past month? What do you still need to catch up with? Let us know in the comments.
13:41We'll see you next time.
13:42We'll see you next time.
13:43Bye.
13:44Bye.
13:45Bye.
13:46Bye.
