00:00My name is Happy Gilmore.
00:0330 years ago, I decided to give golf a try.
00:07Welcome to WatchMojo, and in this installment of Must Watch,
00:10we're looking at movies, shows, and more that defined pop culture in July 2025.
00:16You have a dog?
00:22Number 10. Jaws at 50, the definitive inside story.
00:2650 years, we're still talking about Jaws.
00:31It was the first blockbuster.
00:33For many of us, July means one thing and one thing only.
00:37Shark programming.
00:3850 years later, it's still hard to top the original Jaws.
00:42Over the decades, there have been a few documentaries about the 1975 classic's troubled production and unexpected impact.
00:49Reportedly, there's another documentary on the horizon with Jaws making a splash in Hollywood.
00:54I never once felt like I wanted to quit.
00:57When the film wrapped, I had a full-blown panic attack.
01:03National Geographic beat that doc to release, though, with Jaws at 50.
01:07Dubbing itself the definitive inside story, this documentary stands out with a first-hand account from Steven Spielberg.
01:13Several others share their insight into how Jaws shaped a generation and is still influencing the industry.
01:18There have been movies made since using CG sharks that aren't nearly as good.
01:23Ushering in the summer movie season as we now know it, there isn't a boat big enough to contain Jaws' legacy.
01:31Number 9.
01:39The Sandman Season 2.
01:40The dream is returning to heaven.
01:43Lord Morpheus comes to us in a futile attempt to free one he loves from our domain.
01:48Speaking of legacy, recent allegations against author Neil Gaiman have called his into question.
01:54Some might attribute the Sandman ending to the controversy surrounding Gaiman, although Season 2 was reportedly always intended to be the last.
02:02Even after the first season drew in high viewership, Netflix was apprehensive about renewing, most likely due to the budget costing $15 million per episode.
02:16The money is again on the screen in Season 2, which was split into dual volumes followed by a special.
02:22While another visual marvel with gothic atmosphere, the show's true life force is Tom Sturridge in a literal dream casting choice.
02:35Say what you will about Gaiman, but the Sandman is one of the many works that will outlive its creator.
02:40The dreaming will survive.
02:44Even if I did not.
02:49Number 8.
02:50Don to Don Season 2.
02:51Even by anime standards, Don to Don is pretty balls to the wall.
03:08We mean that in more ways than one, as one of the inciting incidents sees a character lose his, let's just say, banana.
03:16As bonkers as the story gets, this Crunchyroll anime award-winning series is a surprisingly sweet coming-of-age story centered on the nerdy Okorun and the often scantily clad Momo.
03:34Their intense relationship is only made more complicated thanks to the presence of aliens, curses, and past loves.
03:40Season 2 piles onto the insanity with a sacrificial family, a giant snake worm, and a spirit named Evil Eye.
03:58The season's first three episodes were released theatrically as part of a feature, but we've only scratched the surface of Yokinobu Tatsu's source material.
04:14Number 7.
04:23Billy Joel and So It Goes
04:25Earlier this year, the music world was saddened to learn that Billy Joel would be canceling his upcoming performances after being diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus, a brain disorder.
04:41The news coincided with the release of Billy Joel and So It Goes.
04:46As we see in the two-part documentary, this isn't the first time that Joel has fought for his life.
04:50I've had a lot of hard lessons in my life.
04:53I should have been worth this, and I was worth this.
04:57And I hit the pavement.
04:59Kaboom!
05:00I was amazed that I was still alive.
05:02In addition to exploring the deeper meanings behind hits like Piano Man and Uptown Girl, his life story dives into the financial, marital, and mental health struggles that Joel faced.
05:11The film isn't told from Joel's perspective, but those who know him intimately.
05:16For every critic who once wrote off Joel, you'll find that the man and his music are far more complex.
05:21I think music saved my life.
05:23It gave me a resonant love.
05:26I don't care what you say anymore, this is my life.
05:31Number 6.
05:32Eddington
05:32Can we just talk?
05:34Can we just, can we, just the two of us?
05:36We are.
05:37Guys, movies set in 2020 can now be considered period pieces.
05:42Ari Aster's Eddington takes us back to the early days of the pandemic as people declare war over masks, conspiracy theories poison social media,
05:50and authority figures who should be keeping the peace instead add gasoline to the fire.
05:55These are your streets.
05:57No, they're your streets to be safe.
05:58Shut it down! Shut it down!
06:01You know how death works.
06:02Yeah.
06:05For its first two acts, Eddington is an accurate time capsule of what many of us endured.
06:10The final act is where the director of Hereditary and Midsommar shows his truly twisted side.
06:15With the world still divided, Eddington is bound to infuriate audiences for different reasons.
06:21But we can all agree on one thing.
06:23When we re-evaluate the evolving COVID sub-genre years from now, Eddington will most certainly be a talking point.
06:30We are in a fight against evil.
06:35Number 5.
06:36Dexter Resurrection
06:37You have to go through hell to achieve resurrection.
06:43Hallelujah.
06:43Some characters just won't stay dead.
06:47In Dexter Morgan's case, we're not complaining.
06:50While the original series was great at its peak, it had one of the worst finales ever.
06:55It seemingly found redemption in Dexter New Blood, although that series didn't wrap up on the best note either.
07:01You have to turn yourself in.
07:05There's no other way.
07:07The past several months have given us two Dexter shows.
07:10Original Sin centers on a younger Dexter,
07:12while Resurrection officially brings the serial killer back for more blood.
07:16It's a dark path you're going down.
07:21I urge you to be careful, son.
07:23I'm tired of being careful.
07:25Michael C. Hall reprises his career-defining role,
07:28joined by some other familiar faces along with new ones like Uma Thurman and Peter Dinklage.
07:33Only time will tell if this will be the one that finally sticks the landing,
07:36but for now, Dexter is hitting his target again.
07:39What do you think?
07:43The gang dropped by Abbott Elementary last January.
07:51Turns out, these clowns were up to a lot more than we knew.
07:55Welcome to Abbott Elementary, the best elementary school in the universe.
07:58Um, what's the deal with all the cameras?
08:00We have like a Vanderpump thing going on.
08:02Don't worry about it.
08:02No!
08:03No.
08:04I think I'll be spending my time on the other side of the camera.
08:06Thank you very much.
08:07The It's Always Sunny season premiere gave us the second half of that crossover,
08:11complete with footage too profanity-laced for ABC's censors.
08:15From there, the Paddy's Pub proprietors get back to their usual antics,
08:19by which we mean criminal and morally bankrupt activity.
08:22Yeah, so at one point, I was misled into believing they were shooting an educational video
08:26in the vein of Billy Joel's We Didn't Start the Fire.
08:29Although it's the 17th season, the show itself is turning 20 this year.
08:33Just as the series isn't showing its age,
08:36the gang is demonstrating no signs of emotional growth.
08:39Snakebite, that's kind of exciting.
08:41Whoa, that's very interesting to me.
08:43I've always wanted to suck out snake venom.
08:44You know this.
08:47William Pepper taking a call.
08:48Yeah, let's take it.
08:49Come on!
08:49Even when they do, that is quickly yanked away.
08:52At this point, though, we wouldn't want to change anything.
08:55As funny as it's ever been,
08:57It's Always Sunny remains a comedy staple that will hopefully last forever,
09:01unlike some other shows.
09:03I can't see! God damn it! God damn it!
09:06Number 3. The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
09:16The Final Countdown?
09:17Next year will be our last season.
09:20The network will be ending The Late Show in May.
09:24And...
09:25One day you're making a joke about your parent company bowing to the president standing in the way of a merger.
09:33The next, your show is canceled, along with a more than 30-year-old franchise.
09:37CBS was apparently preparing to end The Late Show before Stephen Colbert accused the higher-ups of bribing President Trump.
09:44I believe this kind of complicated financial settlement with a sitting government official has a technical name in legal circles.
09:51It's Big Fat Bribe.
09:52CBS also claimed this was, quote,
09:54"...purely a financial decision," supposedly losing $40 million annually.
10:00Many still find the timing suspicious, believing CBS wouldn't have canceled the highest-rated late-night show with someone else in the White House.
10:07Okay, but how are they going to put pressure on Stephen Colbert if they can't find him?
10:13While we're sad the late-night show is ending, we're excited to see how Colbert will use his platform over the following months.
10:22He is not going quietly, and Jon Stewart isn't staying silent either.
10:26Go f*** yourself!
10:29Go f*** yourself!
10:31Number 2.
10:32The Fantastic Four First Steps
10:34Fourth time's a charm.
10:44We guess the fifth time, depending on how you count the number of attempts.
10:48In any case, we can finally say that there's a good, non-Incredibles Fantastic Four movie.
10:52Not only is First Steps by far the best film centered on Marvel's first family,
10:57but between this and the underrated Thunderbolts, the MCU is seeing a return to form.
11:02What is that?
11:03Get us out of here, Ben!
11:06Hold on!
11:11Are we safe?
11:12I don't know.
11:14The MCU learns from its mistakes with First Steps,
11:17focusing on telling an engaging, standalone story rather than trying to branch several others together.
11:22Marvel also avoids the missteps of past Fantastic Four movies,
11:26emphasizing the family dynamic, vibrant visuals, and environment that fully embraces its comic book roots.
11:32Are you the protectors of this world?
11:36Yes, we are.
11:37Your planet is now marked for death.
11:41After several steps back, this is a huge leap forward.
11:46We will protect you.

12:07Number 1.
12:10Superman
12:11Superman.
12:14Miss Lane.
12:17Recently, you've come under a lot of fire.
12:19I don't know. It's a lot of fire.
12:20It's a lot.
12:21Marvel isn't the only superhero brand on the upswing.
12:27The DC Universe is off to a promising start with James Gunn's Superman.
12:30From the opening scene, Gunn quite literally drops us into this universe of gods and monsters
12:35where Superman is just one of many meta-humans.
12:38Even as the Justice Gang forms in the background, Superman stands out as a symbol of hope.
12:49Of course, that makes him a prime target for the public, media, and billionaires like Lex Luthor.
12:55While the story pushes Superman to his physical limits,
12:57what distinguishes this film is the internal battles concerning responsibility,
13:02legacy, and how much authority one person should have.
13:08Superman.
13:19Just when you thought superhero fatigue killed the genre, Gunn gave it a shot in the arm.
13:33What did you watch this past month?
13:35What do you still need to catch up with?
13:37Let us know in the comments.
13:39You in charge?
13:40Yeah, I'm James Gunn.
13:43Hey! Bradley Cooper carved that desk!
13:45What was up with that last maximum velocity?
13:48You didn't like it?
13:49I thought it was great.
13:50You're ruining my childhood!
