We went out into the streets of Greater Manchester to ask people about sports, and how games like golf could be the saviour of young people who may struggle to socialise.
00:00Hello and welcome to Manchester World. My name is Theo Guse and Betts and today we're out on the streets of Greater Manchester asking people about sports.
00:06And that's because since Covid socialising has become tough for a lot of people. A lot of people retreated into their shells and there are great opportunities across Greater Manchester for taking part in either team or individual sports.
00:17So I went and spoke to a couple of people up at a golf course in Rochdale today about sports, why it's important and why something like golf could help people get out of their shell.
00:25So I think people are just looking for different experiences rather than pubs.
00:29I love playing sports, I always have. And this has been, especially golf has been really nice for mental health because you get out of the house, go and play, you kind of forget everything.
00:40I guess that's a sport, you don't worry about what's happening for the rest of your life, you worry about sport and basically what's happening in the moment.
00:47I think sports is important because it's just to get out of the house, to do something active because it's quite easy, especially in this day and age, just to be stuck in your room, scrolling through your phone, playing computer games.
00:59And whereas even just doing a round of golf, even if you're really bad, you're just outside in nature with some of your friends just chatting.
01:05Yeah, it's freedom. That's why I play is a lot of freedom, get out of the house rather than having to worry about like team sports and having to get involved and worrying that you're affecting a team.
01:18You get to play and you're playing kind of competitively against yourself and not having to worry about having too many people around you.
01:27I think especially the generation that was in school during COVID didn't have an opportunity to develop a lot of social skills that you get in school, especially like high school, primary school.
01:36So I can imagine team sports being a bit more tricky, tricky for that kind of age group.
01:41But I think it's really important. Team sports, really good way to build social skills, really great way to get friends, you know, playing around a football with Sunday club and then going to the pub after, you know, I think it's a great way to socialise.
01:52Yeah, it's a nice feeling of being able to, if you don't want to interact with lots of people, if you have that kind of social anxiety around lots of people, it's a nice way to play a game that's not massively physical.
02:09I know there's lots of skill and physical stuff to it, but a nicer way to play without other people and kind of have that freedom to go on the course by yourself.
02:18Touching on young people going to the pub less and drinking less, I think that's more of people just wanting different experiences, whereas going to the pub and having a drink with your mates is, you could see it as the same experience over and over again.
02:32Whereas people are looking for different experiences and paying more for the experience rather than a product.
02:37Like, I reckon a bit of both. Like, I reckon people are more used to going out because they've been stuck inside for like a year, year and a half, haven't they?
02:47So it makes sense that they want to be outside, but I guess the worry of, like, illnesses, anything like that, they're probably also more inclined to stay inside.
02:57And it's just affected everyone, hasn't it, really?
