Young people aged 5 to 21 in Rhondhwacan and Tav will benefit from a new initiative making bus travel more affordable.
00:09
For the months of September and October, a single bus journey will cost no more than £1.
00:15
It coincides with a Welsh Government initiative to offer £1 bus fares for young people,
00:20
which will only be available across the rest of Wales for 16 to 21 year olds in November,
00:25
when it will be rolled out for all young people aged 5 to 21.
00:29
In Rhondhwacan and Tav, the scheme for 5 to 15 year olds starts two months early,
00:34
so as the new school year begins, all young people aged 5 to 21 in RCT will benefit.
00:41
No specific ID is required in the county.
00:44
They simply purchase a child single ticket for £1 for journeys that start and end within Rhondhwacan and Tav.
00:51
RCT Council says the initiative aims to encourage more young people to use public transport,
00:57
reduce congestion and support families with travel costs.
01:01
The Welsh Government has highlighted that the scheme will also provide greater access to education,
01:06
jobs and leisure activities across the region and across the rest of Wales.
01:11
Council leaders have welcomed the initiative as a way to make bus travel more equitable for young people,
01:17
while transport campaigners said it could act as a model for affordable travel schemes elsewhere in Wales.
01:23
The £1 fair represents one of the most ambitious attempts in Wales to reduce the cost of public transport for young people,
01:30
giving thousands of Rhondhwacan and Tav for now, and the rest of Wales in the future,
01:34
the chance to travel more freely and independently,
01:37
filling those gaps left by the Welsh Government's scheme.
