00:00G'day, I'm Paul. So, Ram has put the V8 on ice for the 1500 and transitioned to a six-cylinder.
00:07They've called it the Hurricane. We've got a high-output version now coming to Australia,
00:10along with a standard output as well. But I know what you're wondering. Which one of those is
00:15fastest? Is the six quicker than the V8? Today, we're going to be doing some straight-line drag
00:18races. We're going to do some roll races. And at the end, I'm just going to be quiet so you can
00:22hear what some of these drivetrains sound like. And most importantly, which one is our quickest
00:31in Australia? Because last time we did this whole drag race thing, Silverado was the quickest of the
00:36bunch. And I want to figure out today whether it is still the fastest or whether the six-cylinder
00:40has taken the beans. So, let's get straight into it. Alrighty, let's give this a crack. So, as a
00:48reminder, we're going to go down to the finish line. Once that's done, we're going to do a
00:52rolling race. Crown the winner here. Then we're going to go up against some of the other names
00:56in this segment. But as a bit of a recap here, if you don't know what Ram has done,
01:00they've basically ditched the V8 and gone down the path of turbocharged sixes. So, it now uses a
01:05three-litre turbocharged straight six. It's called the Hurricane Engine. This is the high-output.
01:09Next to me is the standard output. And all the way to the end there is the previous generation V8.
01:15400-odd kilowatts of power here for the high-output. Almost 100 kilowatts less for the standard
01:20output, but still at over 300 kilowatts of power. It's got some mumbo. This one has like 700
01:25newton metres of torque. They're all mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. And of course,
01:29the V8 was a naturally aspirated one with the e-torque engine. We're going to be running these
01:34in four-wheel drive, auto, and in sport mode. This has like a sort of launch control mode. So,
01:39it lets you dial up just over 3,000 RPM, which is pretty impressive. Likewise, with the standard output,
01:44but slightly lower revs. And then the old-school V8 just, it's just going to be built up and then
01:50we'll smash them over the finish line. So, let's give this a shot. Eagle, ready for your countdown.

02:36um sean what did we all leave at the same time i i i kind of just the the second i left i didn't
02:43know where you guys were uh i i think we left at the same time i was caught by surprise i don't
02:48really know what happened this thing absolutely hauls and yours you just shot off like genuinely
02:54the the trx that we had here a little while back was was fast a little bit of wheel slip off the
03:03line there but that has all of this like noise supercharger whine this genuinely feels like
03:12as fast just without a v8 sound i'm i'm just shocked at how they've been able to extract this
03:20much power and torque out of a six it kind of reminds me of um the barra xr6 turbo you just
03:27build up a bit of boost and then you just have to hold on for dear life okay so now it's time for us
03:32to do the rolling race and i'm gonna roll up to 50 and uh these don't have like a manual shift mode
03:38they have a gear limit which effectively limits the the gear that the car will will go to and
03:44it won't go over that it'll just sit in the limiter so it's kind of pointless activating any
03:47of that so we're just going to roll up in sport mode to 50 k's an hour and mash the throttle to
03:51see how they go with kick down and then reaching the finish line so righty gents let's do this so
03:57roll up to 50 and then on my go we will mash the throttle so there's 30 40 50 on 3 2 1 go

04:23that was that was interesting i was just watching as we we took off there um you know the v8 for
04:31for a very brief moment had something and then uh once once these kick down and and you get that
04:40boost from the turbo you're basically it's on for young and old so uh yeah very good all right
04:46um high output is the quickest so i reckon what we'll do now we'll get the other uh pickup trucks
04:52get them on the start line and i might just try and and destroy them in the standard output first
04:58just to see how that goes and then uh if that fails i'm going to wheel this thing back out and um i
05:03feel like it's going to make mince meat of the rest of them right this is where the fun begins
05:08while the six cylinder ram is quicker than the old v8 time to figure out whether it is actually
05:14quicker than the other cars in the segment so we already know what this is ford f150 here in
05:19australia is only available with a single engine it's a three and a half liter eco boost v6
05:23so around 300 kilowatts of power good chunk of torque and aluminium construction for the body so
05:30sort of well built for this type of thing so it's going to be really close between these two i think
05:34but most power and torque actually comes from the toyota tundra so that uses a six cylinder turbo as
05:40well but it has a hybrid assistance system and that gives it just a little bit of torque feel
05:44when it's required it'll be close i think and finally the silverado so that thing is a beast so
05:50over 300 kilowatts of power but naturally aspirated v8 instead of forced induction so that is going to
05:56definitely be the loudest here but will it be the quickest that's what we want to figure out so i think

09:40for whatever reason it just won't won't get off the line as fast but once they're rolling
09:46that that v8 just has legs for days i mean by the time the the turbo cars spool up the chevy's already got a little run on them so it's uh it's pretty pretty unreal stuff but i think it was a clear victory here to the ram and had it have been a bit longer the f-150 from the standing start
10:03what i'm going to do now though is switch over to uh the ram with with chest hair and we'll try that one more time just to see how much of a difference there actually is
10:14okay so given we don't have the uh ram 1500 rho or the f-150 raptor and all the fun stuff here in australia this is as hairy chested as it gets for a ram 1500 so so we'll see what happens here
10:30uh over 400 kilowatts of power uh i think this is going to trounce them but you know that f-150 is a bit of a dark horse so to speak

11:40but you know what i don't understand that tundra has like outside of the this this high
11:45output uh ram 1500 has the most power and torque but i just i just don't understand how it's so slow
11:53it just makes no sense to me i think that time is where we all left at the at the same time which
11:57was good um all right so let's go line up for a roll race and uh chevy was a dark horse last time in the roll race
12:05let's see what happens this time around uh i think ultimately sean the 10 speed auto in that
12:11ford uh it needs to send a letter back home to the states before it figures out which is the right
12:17gear to be in for its for its eventual launch from 50 k's an hour

16:52Obviously, six-cylinder, much quicker than the outgoing V8 version of the Ram product.
16:58Will it sell better?
16:59I don't know.
16:59People love the sound of a V8.

17:05And there is also rumour as well that they're going to go back to V8 for like a proper TRX.
