00:00India is bracing for a sharp blow to its overseas trade as steep US tariffs take effect on a range of Indian products.
00:10US President Donald Trump had initially announced a 25% tariff on Indian goods,
00:16but imposed an additional 25% earlier this month due to India's purchases of Russian oil,
00:22bringing the combined tariffs to 50%.
00:26Officials have warned the new duties could make shipments to the US commercially unviable,
00:31triggering job losses and slower economic growth.
00:35Labour-intensive sectors such as textiles, gems and jewellery, leather goods, food and automobiles will likely be the most impacted.
00:44The government has begun working on reforms to boost local consumption and insulate the economy.
00:50The trade ministry is also weighing steps to expand exports to other regions, particularly Latin America, Africa and Southeast Asia.
00:59Trade negotiations underway with the European Union could gain renewed urgency as India works to reduce its dependence on the US market.
01:08Protesters in Israel torched tires and blocked highways as they demanded their government reach a ceasefire that would free the hostages still being held in Gaza.
01:20Responding to a call from Israel's hostages and missing families forum for a national day of struggle,
01:29protesters waved banners that read hostage deal now.
01:36Today is a day of resistance calling the Israeli government to seal the deal that's now on the table
01:44and to bring all the hostages home and to end the war in Gaza.
01:49The majority of the Israeli people want the end of the suffering of the hostages and the people in Gaza.
01:58251 hostages were taken during Hamas' October 7, 2023 attack on Israel.
02:04Their relatives say they hope steady pressure can push Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
02:09and his security cabinet to commit to ceasefire talks.
02:12Far-right members of his coalition have repeatedly threatened to leave if Israel agrees to a truce and have dismissed the protesters' demands.
02:21We the people demand to be prioritized the hostages, go back to the negotiation table.
02:30There's a good deal on the table. It's something we could work with.
02:34It's something we could get a deal done to bring all the hostages back.
02:38The disruption comes as Israeli leaders pressed ahead with plans for an expanded Gaza offensive
02:46against the backdrop of displacement, destruction and famine.
02:50At least 16 people were killed in Israeli strikes in Gaza on Tuesday, according to hospital workers.
02:57Officials from Nasser Hospital, Shifa Hospital and Gaza City's Sheikh Radwan Clinic
03:02reported that women and children were amongst those killed.
03:07Serbia's President Alexander Vudic said Russia and Ukraine would be welcome to use his country as a location for potential peace talks.
03:18U.S. President Donald Trump has been pushing for the Ukrainian and Russian leaders to meet, with little success so far.
03:24Do you think Belgrade could be a place for a future meeting between Putin and Zelensky?
03:31Well, that's a very interesting question. I know that there are thousands of people and at least tens of countries that are offering their space for that meeting.
03:42I cannot compete with those bigger and smarter and whatever, but they are always very welcome.
03:50I have a good relationship with President Zelensky and I believe a good relationship with President Putin as well.
03:57And Serbia can offer a good hospitality and a very secure place for both of them.
04:08In his exclusive interview with Euronews, the Serbian leader said everyone is interested in peace in Ukraine.
04:15He added he had undertaken what he called open talks with Putin in the past, but declined to elaborate further.
04:26Matteo Salvini's comments set off a firestorm between France and Italy.
04:31The Italian vice-president of the Council urged Emmanuel Macron to don a bulletproof vest and go to Ukraine himself,
04:38criticizing French support for a possible deployment of European troops in support of Kyiv.
04:44In Milan, you would say, take the tram. Go if you want. You put the jacket, the jacket, the gun, and go to Ukraine.
04:53The dispute highlights the differences between Europeans over the security guarantees they would be prepared to provide to Ukraine
05:00in the event of a peace agreement to deter any future Russian aggression.
05:05The security guarantee force is expected to have various components.
05:10It's not a neutral force between the two parties, but a strong force against the Ukrainians,
05:18which would aim to dissuade Russia to take its eventual aggression against Ukraine,
05:27by showing him that if she came to take the hostilities, this time this is not only against the Ukrainians
05:34but against a coalition of countries in Europe.
05:39For its part, Rome is firmly opposed to the deployment of Italian troops in Ukraine to prevent any escalation,
05:46and questions the effectiveness of sending European troops.
05:50Instead, it advocates a collective defense mechanism where each country would commit to assisting Ukraine if attacked.
05:58It rather insists on the fact that it should not be his own troops present in a post-cease-fire scenario in Ukraine,
06:07but rather develop an Article 5 NATO model that would protect Ukraine without bringing it within the NATO international organization,
06:18because we know that this is one of the red-line asks from Russia.
06:23According to this expert, the debate also reveals the internal divisions within the Italian coalition government.
06:30Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni supports Ukraine and has backed all sanctions against Russia.
06:36Conversely, Matteo Salvini's League party, which has historic ties with the Kremlin, regularly opposes European support for Ukraine.
06:44However, Rome and Paris, both part of the Coalition of the Willing, could converge and further security guarantees for Kyiv.
06:51It's time to choose between chaos and responsibility.
06:59Words of French Prime Minister Francois Beru, who on Monday called for a vote of confidence on plans for deep budget cuts.
07:07Beru, who has led a minority government since last December, on Tuesday said Parliament has 13 days to decide on this,
07:15warning that France is in danger.
07:18Despite opposition parties saying they will vote against him, Beru vowed to fight like a dog to win the 8th September vote.
07:26It's a moment of clarification and it's a moment of truth.
07:32So I see all those who, in front of this requirement of clarification,
07:37choose to be purely and simply the artists of chaos.
07:42It's the contrary of the spirit of responsibility, and even the co-responsibility,
07:48that defends the current democratic, social, lucid, reformist,
07:54which is a part of the militants of the CFDT and which is in partage with the militants of the social democracy.
08:03The vote comes two days before protests are due to take place in France against the government's austerity policy,
08:09announced by Beru in July.
08:23Beru was appointed by Emmanuel Macron after former Prime Minister Michel Barnier's government collapsed in the confidence vote on spending cuts last December.
08:44Last year's budget deficit hit 5.8% of France's GDP.
08:52Portugal has joined a list of European countries in suspending most postal services to the U.S. amid widespread uncertainty over the imposition of new import tariffs.
09:04The country's national postal service said it would be temporarily suspending services of goods to the U.S. in mail products and international express parcels.
09:14The decision follows U.S. President Donald Trump's move to end the duty-free entry of shipments valued at $800 or less.
09:24The White House said the decision aimed to combat illegal or abusive practices such as the shipment of illicit drugs into the States.
09:33Postal services in Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Italy to the U.S. were suspended over the weekend with France, Austria and the United Kingdom following suit.
09:42The move is expected to have a significant impact on small and medium-sized European companies exporting lower-value goods to the States.
09:51It comes after the U.S. and the European Union reached an agreement on trade last month, the details on which have yet to be finalised.
10:00Heavy rain caused flooding and landslides in parts of Southeast Asia on Wednesday, resulting in at least eight deaths.
10:12Flooding occurred in several central and northern regions of Vietnam, killing seven people and injuring at least 34.
10:21In Thailand, several people were injured from flash flooding and landslides in the north of the country.
10:29One person died from a landslide in the northern city of Chiang Mai.
10:33The rain is an aftermath of Tropical Storm Kijiki, which made landfall in Vietnam on Monday.
10:42The storm then weakened to a tropical depression on Tuesday when it moved over Laos.
10:48Scientists have warned that warmed seas as a result of climate change would cause cyclones in the region to form closer to land, become faster and last longer.
10:59After several failed attempts in the past year, SpaceX pulled off a successful launch of its mega rocket Starship on Tuesday.
11:15The rocket deployed its first batch of eight dummy satellites into space before splashing back down as planned into the Indian Ocean.
11:23No crew were on board of the demo launch, but founder Elon Musk's ultimate goal is for the spacecraft to deliver people and cargo to the moon and eventually also Mars.
11:35Meanwhile, NASA has said it hopes two starships will land astronauts on the moon later this decade.
