Charlie Yeatman on more Mt Ousley trucks. Illawarra Mercury, August 27, 2025. Video Adam McLean
Transcript
00:00I think there's lots of concerns about the number of trucks that are coming down Mount
00:14Earsley as it is. We've got the cars being transported into Port Kemble which then have
00:24to be taken up to Sydney already so we've got a lot of car transport. We've got a lot
00:28of coal and other transports coming up and down Mount Earsley. Mount Earsley is one of
00:35the most difficult descents that trucks can make in New South Wales. That's been evidenced
00:44by the number of trucks which have crashed either at the bottom or on the way down the
00:49hill. They've had to limit them to 40 kilometres an hour for a reason and it's a great concern
00:57that they're adding another 220,000 trips a year to take stuff back up to Sydney which
01:06should have been taken to Sydney in the first place is a real concern. The local community
01:12isn't coping too well at the moment with the poorly provided infrastructure as far as road
01:21is concerned with the threeways which were initially presented as the Wollongong Bypass have bridges
01:31have bridges which are far too low for high vehicles and so they're having to bring trucks which
01:40are overhyped through residential and business areas of Wollongong which is totally inappropriate.
01:47Transport for New South Wales with their new interchange haven't taken on board the community's concerns as far as
01:54bringing trucks down Old Mount Earsley Road straight at a McDonalds on the corner where there has been
02:01around about five accidents one death several injuries and it's been incredibly lucky that
02:07they haven't been on that corner already and Transport for New South Wales saw it as quite reasonable that
02:14they continue to bring trucks down through a residential area when they were offered options
02:21to do otherwise. They could have reduced their number of trucks, given them going through a residential area
02:31and given them an opportunity to wash away some of their speed prior to going into residential and business areas.
02:42Yeah, good.
