EU defends sovereign right to regulate tech against Trump's latest tariff threat

The European Commission has defended its sovereign right to regulate in reaction to Donald Trump's threat of retaliation against Big Tech laws.

00:00The European Union is once again in the U.S. President's sights.
00:06The trade agreement between the European Commission and the White House has barely been concluded,
00:11but Donald Trump is already threatening to impose new customs duties on countries
00:16that apply measures he considers discriminatory against American technology companies.
00:21The threat is a thinly veiled attack on European regulations on digital services
00:26and digital markets, known as the DSA and DMA.
00:31When questioned, the Commission responded with a clarification.
00:34I think it's useful to recall what we've been saying a number of times,
00:39that it is the sovereign right of the EU and its member states to regulate economic activities on our territory,
00:47which are consistent with our democratic values.
00:51And to come to the second part of your question, this is also why this was not part of our agreement with the U.S.
01:00The latest statement by Trump, who is close to the heads of major American tech companies,
01:05is a slap in the face for the Commission.
01:08In defense of the agreement reached with Washington at the end of July,
01:11the European institution emphasized it had protected its digital regulations
