President Lai Ching-te's administration is considering ways of helping fish exporters weather U.S. tariffs. Taiwan's tariff rate is higher than some competing countries that export seafood to the United States.

00:08President Lai Ching-de has visited a fish processing center in Ilan on Taiwan's east
00:12coast where a quarter of the country's mahi-mahi catch comes ashore.
00:16Around 6 percent of Taiwan's mahi-mahi is exported as fillets to the United States.
00:21But with U.S. tariffs set for now at 20 percent, these and other fish exports will suffer as
00:27competitors like Peru and Ecuador have lower rates.
00:30Ideas include a one-year loan with one percent interest and helping fishing groups get sustainability certification.
