00:0016, the amazing Leicester City!
00:21Sponsored by Bet365
00:30Now that is quite something!
00:38Oh, it's fabulous!
00:43Can you believe this?
00:46It is a beauty!
00:52Oh, that's massive!
00:54That is outstanding!
01:03Unstoppable!
01:06A brand new season and it's like we've never been away.
01:09Goals, drama, talking points and last season's top three all winning
01:14on this opening Premier League weekend starting with the champions Liverpool
01:18who kicked things off at Anfield on Friday night
01:21managing to see off a brave Bournemouth side by four goals to two.
01:26Then on Saturday it was Manchester City's turn
01:28and it was a really eye-catching victory and performance to beat Wolves 4-0.
01:34Arsenal had the best defence in the Premier League last season
01:36and they managed to shut out Manchester United's new-look strike force
01:39to take all three points away from Old Trafford.
01:43Spurs, of course, have a new head coach in Thomas Frank.
01:46Promising start for them.
01:483-0 victory over Championship runners-up Burnley.
01:51But what about the playoff winners Sunderland?
01:53The dream start after eight years away
01:56with all three goals against West Ham scored by players
01:59who had a starring role in their promotion season last time round.
02:02And tonight we watch the third of the promoted sides in Championship winners Leeds United.
02:09And isn't it good to be back at Elland Road, one of the iconic stadiums,
02:13kicking off Monday Night Football with Leeds United up against Everton.
02:20Well, as you'll know, the last six sides promoted to the Premier League
02:24have all gone straight back down.
02:26But Leeds spring momentum after a 100-point title-winning championship season
02:32and some eye-catching summer signings with the possibility of more to come.
02:39Everton were in danger of the drop last time round
02:41before David Moyes returned to Goodison to steady the ship at the turn of the year
02:45and as they planned for life in a new stadium,
02:47Moyes will be hoping he can guide Everton to a first top-half finish since 2021.
02:52And the Toffees have a new poster boy.
02:56I just felt, yeah, it was the right time, you know, to move on and try something new
03:01and I want to help this club, I want to help the team
03:04and there's a lot of talent in the squad
03:06and hopefully, you know, we can go on to do good things together.
03:09And a lot of Everton fans cannot wait to see him in their shirt.
03:14He is at Elland Road tonight, he has just arrived in the last few moments.
03:18But will David Moyes throw him straight in from the off?
03:23Jordan picked for 12 clean sheets last season.
03:25And the new signing, Kiernan Dewsbury Hall, standing by to make his Premier League debut.
03:29Just two Premier League starts for him at Chelsea last season.
03:33So, Everton's season about to get underway at Elland Road,
03:38where Leeds are marking their return after a two-year absence.
03:42And we kick off at eight o'clock.
03:48Very good evening to you.
03:50Welcome back to a brand new season of Monday Night Football.
03:53Isn't it good to be back as well with a brand new season in the Premier League.
03:58So many talking points have been thrown up by this opening weekend
04:00and because it is the opening Monday Night Football of the new season,
04:05Gary Neville is here, looking thrilled to be back with Jamie Carragher.
04:12Not just talking points, of course, but all their predictions,
04:15which is probably why Gary's looking a little bit tense.
04:17The traditional Monday Night Football season predictions
04:20will come your way after the game tonight, around about 10.30.
04:24We'll look forward to that.
04:26Gary, kick things off for us.
04:27We've talked about the fact that, yes, the last six promoted sides
04:31have gone straight back down.
04:33Can you make a case for Leeds or others to buck the trend?
04:35Good start for Sunderland at the weekend.
04:37I think that just seeing Leeds back in the Premier League,
04:39obviously the great encounters that I had with them as a player,
04:42a ferocious stadium, a great football club.
04:45And, look, I hope so.
04:47I genuinely do hope that we can see just more than one, actually,
04:50of the teams stay up.
04:51We need to break that trend that's occurred over the last couple of seasons
04:54because it's worrying.
04:55But Leeds, I think, have got a chance to look like they've signed
04:57a certain profile of player that's physical.
04:59I think that teams that have come up in the last few years
05:01have maybe not got it right from a tactical and technical perspective
05:05and their signings and their recruitment.
05:07Sunderland looked very good on Saturday, so it's been a decent start
05:10for the promoted clubs.
05:11Burnley didn't do the worst job at Tottenham.
05:12I know they got beat in the end, but they put up a fight for quite a while.
05:14And Leeds fans cannot wait to get started tonight.
05:17Eight o'clock kickoff and let's head to Elland Road now
05:20because we can speak live to the Leeds chairman, Parag Marate,
05:24who is standing by to speak to us.
05:26Parag, very good evening to you.
05:27I'm sure you're as excited as anybody,
05:30but what are your ambitions at the start of this new season?
05:34Honestly, my ambitions are to prove that we belong.
05:38Leeds United deserves to be here.
05:41Excited is one word to use.
05:44Nervous and grateful are a couple other words that I'm feeling right now as well,
05:49but really just want to show that we belong.
05:51You know, we're here, but we haven't yet arrived.
05:54I wonder if you feel there is still work to do behind the scenes, Parag,
05:58going into this Premier League season.
05:59You were quoted as saying a couple of weeks ago,
06:02we're going to build the best squad possible with every penny we are allowed to spend.
06:06I think it's, what, 75 million so far.
06:09So could you say to the Leeds fans there are more to come?
06:13Absolutely. Listen, history shows that there's always a lot of activity
06:16in the last few weeks of the window, certainly in the last few days of the window.
06:20And we'll exercise every day that we can.
06:23We're still going to make the best decisions for us.
06:25And success is not final. It's a journey.
06:27There's going to be bumps on the road.
06:29Honestly, it's the courage to continue that matters.
06:31And so that's what we're going to keep going
06:33and keep doing everything that we can to prove that this club belongs.
06:38Parag, there's been a certain profile in the players that you've brought in so far,
06:42certainly in terms of the height and the physicality.
06:45Is that all down to the manager and his experience in the Premier League before?
06:48Or have you had an input into that as well?
06:50You know, I've been quoted as saying we've been at this for a little while,
06:55thinking about what we need to do in preparing for the Prem.
06:59And really, I have to give my hats off to Daniel, to Adam Underwood, to Robbie Evans.
07:03They've done a really nice job of getting together and being on the same page
07:07in terms of the profile that we're looking for, whether it be size, whether it be experience,
07:11whether it be just whatever else, leadership, things like that, those things that we think matters.
07:18And for us, that's the steps we're going to take.
07:20And we're going to keep looking for that profile to keep strengthening us.
07:24Parag, one of your big projects that you've got lined up is the stadium project.
07:28Can you just give us an understanding of when that's going to happen
07:31and what's going to be the new Ellen Road?
07:34Yeah, certainly. First, I'll start by saying we have so many supporters
07:38in Leeds, being a one-club city, potentially the biggest one-club city in Europe,
07:43that the day we open the new stadium with more seats, we will be able to fill it
07:48because that's just how passionate Leeds supporters are.
07:51And the reason we want to do it is to get them in and, honestly, to create more revenue
07:56so that every single penny we earn gets right back onto the pitch.
08:00Parag, most of the Premier League clubs or the majority of the Premier League clubs
08:03now have got U.S. ownership.
08:05What is it that U.S. owners see in the Premier League?
08:08We know it's a fantastic product, but where do you see the commercial returns in the clubs?
08:14Honestly, I can't speak for other American owners.
08:17I can speak for myself.
08:19I've been in sports for almost three decades now,
08:23and I love winning, I hate to lose, and that's what drives me.
08:27I honestly don't think about the commercial side of it.
08:30I think about making this club as successful on the pitch as it can be,
08:34and it matters to me.
08:35There's no hours in a day, weeks in a year that really limit me.
08:38It's literally, it's win or go home, and I just want to do everything I can
08:42to get this club as good as it can be.
08:44And I don't really compare myself to others, American owners, British owners,
08:47wherever other chairmen are from.
08:49You've been an executive in an NFL club for a large majority of your sort of career.
08:54What is the major difference that you see between running an NFL franchise
08:57and a football club in England?
09:00Honestly, I will tell you that there's not a lot of difference,
09:03because it always comes down to, obviously you need to have a competitive squad
09:07or competitive team that is as talented as can be,
09:10but you also got to have really good chemistry and leadership.
09:13And that comes from Daniel and Adam all the way down to the players
09:17and the squad and our captain, and that really matters.
09:20Because in this league, in the Premier League, the best league in the world,
09:22everybody's big, strong, fast, physical.
09:25They have all the attributes.
09:26It's how do the sum of the parts, how are they greater than the individual pieces?
09:31And that's what we're trying to do is have great chemistry,
09:33have great leadership to really get us advanced in the Prem.
09:38Well, just on that chemistry, Parag, there were reports when you won the league,
09:42when you won promotion that you were considering replacing Daniel Farke as your head coach.
09:48We know he's had a tough time before in the Premier League with promoted Norwich City.
09:53What happened there?
09:55Honestly, I wouldn't believe reports just for reports.
09:58I often say that when I have something to say, I'm going to say it.
10:02And for me, there was one focus and the focus was winning the championship.
10:06And we did it in a way that was the best point total in the history of Leeds United,
10:10the second best goal differential in the 133 year history of the championship.
10:14And I would say we accomplished our goals.
10:16And I think it was literally the very next morning that I said Daniel's here to stay.
10:20So I really don't want to give any credence to any rumours that was out there,
10:23because I know in my head Daniel was my guy and he's the guy to take us forward.
10:27So would you pledge to stick with him whatever happens?
10:29I think Leeds were relegated from the Premier League trying three different managers last time round.
10:34Ipswich stuck with Kieran McKenna last season.
10:37That didn't work for them.
10:38But Southampton and Leicester did make changes and also that didn't work for them.
10:43So what's your plan?
10:44Honestly, like I said, when I have something to say, then I'll say it.
10:48My focus right now is really taking advantage of the last two weeks of the 12, 13 days of the window
10:54and doing the best we can to strengthen our club within the rules that we are allowed to.
10:59And that's my focus.
11:01Really good to talk to you, Parag.
11:03And we thank you for answering our questions and we wish you all the success moving forward.
11:07Thank you, guys. I appreciate it.
11:09Enjoy the night, Parag.
11:10Thank you very much for joining us on Monday Night Football.
11:13And let's just remind ourselves the state of play for the last six promoted sides.
11:20I suppose the alarming thing, Gary, is not just that they all went straight back down.
11:25It's the ditto with a whimper.
11:27The distance, yeah.
11:28I mean, what we've seen in the last couple of seasons is hugely concerning
11:32because those points totals just are sort of completely and utterly inadequate,
11:35which tells you that the jump from the Championship to the Premier League is getting harder
11:39and harder and harder because the clubs in the Premier League that are established
11:42are getting even more established.
11:44And we've just got to make sure that that cliff edge doesn't occur
11:46where we get the same three teams going back.
11:48Look, Sunderland have invested heavily.
11:50Leeds have invested heavily.
11:51They're great football clubs.
11:52Let's hope that this season, them and Burnley can sort of disrupt this path
11:56because it's a big job you can see there.
11:58There's some good clubs in there.
11:59The likes of Leicester, Southampton have been Premier League clubs many times before.
12:04Do you think, Jamie, that heavy investment is becoming the only way?
12:08Yes, but even that's proven difficult.
12:10You see the funds that were spent last summer by teams that had come up.
12:13It's almost a feeling that you've got to spend at least 150 million to give yourself the chance.
12:16But then you're looking at the points totals that teams are getting.
12:1926 points.
12:20I think that is a bigger problem than the three teams going down.
12:23It's not that they're going down, the promoted teams.
12:26They're not being competitive.
12:27We need the three teams to be competitive.
12:29That's why, not for West Ham supporters, but it was a good thing for the league
12:32and people up and down the country, the fact that Sunderland got a win.
12:35Evertonians want to hear that tonight about Leeds, but we need the promoted clubs to be more competitive.
12:40Yeah, it feels like a big game for Leeds United, isn't it?
12:43Starting tonight against Everton, who had their troubles certainly in the first half of last season
12:48before David Moyes arrived, and we know what a tough nut his teams are to crack.
12:54But does Jack Grealish go straight in from the off?
12:57We will find out the other side of this break, and we will start our weekend roundup
13:03as Sunderland are in Wonderland.
13:18New Senstein Clinical Repair is absolutely the one I would use.

13:46I really would recommend Senstein Clinical Repair.

17:15good to be back at ellen road tonight with our first monday night football of the season
17:25everton the visitors and as you just heard from uh the leeds chairman parag marate plans are in place
17:32for expansion they've got 26 000 on the waiting list for season tickets they he says they could fill
17:38any size of new stadium whenever that happens they would hope that is in the premier league
17:43they're looking for a first home league win against everton since 2001 when robbie fowler's first goals
17:48for the club helped them to a 3-2 victory that sent them up to third in the table they actually
17:53topped the premier league at the turn of the year but finished fifth after their form dropped away
17:57dramatically and david o'leary left the club that summer they are back in the premier league after two
18:03two years away and they cannot wait to get started this evening
18:07right let's have a check on tonight's teams they have just dropped so here we go
18:12uh leeds united handed debut to lucas perry new brazilian goalkeeper and left back to gabriel goodmanson
18:19uh jayden vogel hasn't played a lot of football through injury in this pre-season but he does
18:24uh pass the test to play tonight uh midfield also has a new face in anton stack alongside ethan amper
18:31to the captain and al tanaka the players player of the year last year and it's the same front three
18:36that was so successful in the championship spearheaded by joel perot with their top scorer
18:40with 19 goals uh dominic calvert lewin has not made the matchday squad tonight sean longstaff
18:48in the matcha and bornell more new faces on the bench right here is david moy's first everton team
18:57of the season jordan pickford starting his ninth season as everton's number one michael keane starts
19:03at center back alongside james tarkovsky uh we know about the injury to jared branthwaite our best guess
19:10is that james garner stands in at left back tonight because micheleko is uh injured and there isn't an
19:17obvious replacement available so timur egbenham will come into the midfield and partner adrissa gay
19:22in there we think kiernan jewsbury hall will make his debut in that midfield area as well carlos
19:29alcaraz made his lone signing permanent in the summer imanjanjai really impressive on the other
19:33side beto gets the chance to play uh up front tonight for the first time of this new season with
19:39the new signing tiano barry perhaps a bit of a surprise that starting on the bench along with
19:45new signing jack greelish right let's get started with some weekend analysis and sunderland back in
19:54the premier league after eight years away they had a debut to seven new players they have the youngest
19:58starting age in the premier league this weekend 23.5 you can tell a little bit excited jamie and they
20:04win it by three goals to nil against west ham how do they do it well they did it by basically aerial
20:10dual success really we look at that in the second half but in terms of the first half they're
20:13probably a little bit fortunate to go in at nil nil you think of the great clearance from dan
20:17ballard there in that first half west ham had the edge but i just wanted to look at the setup of both
20:22teams we know sunderland even last season employed that 4-3-3 we know graham potter at west ham likes
20:28the 5-3-2 so just want to look at sort of the nature of the two systems and how that affected
20:33the first goal from sunderland so we look at sunderland's 4-3-3 we see the back four we see that midfield
20:38three all new signings you've just mentioned dave and then a front three with two plays really wide
20:43now that system is sometimes or can be a lot of the times a problem for a team who employ a 5-3-2
20:50like west ham because your wing backs can get pushed real back so west ham system but what's really
20:55interesting is how high lambasaka and you file on that far side so the back three behind them
21:00and the front three there also so what they wanted to do was jump he didn't want to get pinned back the
21:07wing backs for west ham by the wide players of sunderland so as we run it on now what you've got
21:12is one bersaka and juif but you've got one bersaka when the ball comes to this side he's now going to
21:17jump to the full back and what happens is we see juif on the far side he now becomes the left back and he
21:23becomes a back four but it's still 4v3 okay so that's what they want to do they want to sit back and get
21:28penn back and then we see juif on that far side come across so that was the initial plan of west
21:34ham and how to deal with sunderland system i now want to go to the first goal dave and i just wanted
21:42to stop you there jamie because there was um a slight disruption for sunland at the start of the second
21:46half and it was five or six minutes into the second half jensen sail to started the game at left center
21:51back because it was felt that omar aldoretti the new signing the left center back probably hadn't been
21:56signing time had enough training sessions to start the game but selk was forced off aldoretti comes
22:01on why why was that significant to sundown's build up that was probably a little bit of luck you don't
22:06want to see someone get injured but that was probably a little bit of fortune the reason being dave the
22:10new santa back aldoretti is left footed now i've played in that position and when you're right footed
22:15you naturally come a little bit closer and inside i think he goes wider because he's left footed because
22:20he wants to step in with the ball that's what happens on that side so as the ball comes across now
22:26there's just a knock-on effect that's that's your center back in a back four so what happens is
22:31your left back here reinaldo then joins the last line and then what you've got because diare the
22:37two number eights one of the eights i should say joins the attack you've now got a five v five so the
22:43sunderland players pin back the back five so wamba saka as we saw in the first clip which is the initial
22:49idea he can't jump because it's man for man here which then allows aldoretti to step into the space
22:56now it's a ball into the box that you'd expect the team will play with three center backs to deal
23:01with but mayenda what a header he's coming backwards to power that into that far corner
23:07was absolutely fantastic and that is a key to the game and i'll show you why now because on the second
23:13goal ball comes in and we can see as we mentioned before ballards was actually getting marked by
23:20wamba saka wamba saka keeps looking at him just keep an eye on this duel here keeps looking at him
23:25he's got his hand up there's a while before this ball comes into his box wamba saka has another little
23:30look over his shoulder take responsibility go and pick him up don't leave him to piquetta again another
23:36aerial duel lost okay people talk towards the end of the game oh the game's gone west ham are pushing up
23:43to try and get back into the game it doesn't matter if they can see the third goal
23:46when the cross comes in forget what happens afterwards in terms of the goal
23:51aldoretti jumps wins a header against two west ham players would you believe in the game
23:58sundern's won nine out of ten aerial duels in both boxes three of them have led to goals now yes it's
24:04now a counter-attack in this position is a door then there's a bit of a mix-up with west ham and yes
24:10he goes through and scores goalkeeper should do better we see that so we look at this and say it's a
24:14counter-attack but where does it come from it comes from two west ham players not winning a challenge
24:19against one sunderland player the goalkeeper one of them not great for madison on david it's not great
24:25and listen it's been a really poor day fun but that shows when we're looking at tonight the players
24:29leads are brought in and the height of them how important aerial duels are what impact could that
24:34have on sunderland season oh huge i mean to be fair we've missed out that car has done a really good
24:39piece on how sunderland have won the game but what we've missed out is the fans the electricity in that
24:43stadium the atmosphere if you're watching those goals going in it was unbelievable and see sunderland
24:47back in the league look it'll have massive impact on them everyone's talking about the bottom three
24:51clubs going down all the time so they need to get off to a good start and the impact that'll have on
24:54those players those fans the whole club will be enormous worrying times though for west ham early in
25:00this season and uh we will perhaps talk about that a little bit more in our predictions later on
25:05they are back in action against chelsea on the friday night football join us at seven o'clock
25:10to see them take on chelsea up next we're going to hear from daniel farker the league united boss along
25:18with a former west ham boss in david moyes who is now very much in charge of everton we've seen
25:24their teams let's hear about them that's next

27:44so monday night football our first of the season sees leeds united take on everton and that is the
27:49lead starting lineup we think 4-3-3 with a new boy in goal in perry and new boy at left back in goodmanson
27:56and in midfield in stack otherwise it is the bulk of players who took daniel farker's side
28:03back to the premier league after a two-year absence of the new faces in longstaff
28:08longstaff nemetra at bornau on the bench this is the everton side they line up against there's a
28:15little bit of confusion i think it's fair to say because um as no michalenko as new not involved
28:22tonight either so james garner might be the pick at left back we'll we'll try and find out a little
28:26bit more on that in a moment michael keane stepping in for the injured jared branthwaite at center back
28:32as well tim oregman starts in midfield alongside idrissa gaye a debut for kiernan jewsbury hall
28:39in this everton midfield with alcaraz and indai either side of beto preferred tonight
28:46uh to lead the attack instead of new signing tieno barry jack greelish also on the bench
28:56what an impact david moyes had when he returned to goodison park last season 19 games under deitch
29:0319 under moyes he won eight of them uh five of those were actually away from home all against sides
29:10that finished above everson they didn't concede more than one goal in any of those games and
29:16overall that was 31 points premier league ranked ninth across those 19 games so surely let's ask
29:23david moyes who joins us live now top half finish has to be on the cards david you made it look so easy
29:29when you came in last season good evening all uh yeah we might have looked that way but it didn't feel
29:35that way when i came in it looked a bigger job than that how confident do you feel david with your
29:40with your team with the group that you have at the start of this new season well i'm really confident
29:46they gave me great confidence on the way they played at the end of last season uh the form was so
29:50good you can you've just brought it up there in the in the stats but uh look we start again up that's
29:55all gone now we have to do it again but i was really impressed when i came in the players done great
30:00work they went about their job great and especially away from home we picked up some some brilliant
30:05wins a couple of questions on the team tonight david is it is it four at the back well you need to
30:11wait and find out let everybody else announce it but uh i'm sure you don't need to be a rocket
30:17scientist to work it out oh i think we do actually we're not sure at the moment david i think it takes
30:23a lot obviously having watched you for a number of years now in your interviews for you to criticize
30:27a player a couple of weeks ago about beto you said that you were disappointed in him and that you
30:30wanted more from him but you've chosen him ahead of barry tonight you're thinking behind that
30:35well if you look at beto's goals last year gary he was he was incredible when we arrived
30:40the the amount of one-on-ones he had with the goalkeeper he got through to score several times
30:45and he did do he missed some as well but i just felt in pre-season we hadn't scored any goals and
30:50i was critical of him because i i wanted them to go off to a really good start get some goals under
30:54his belt in pre-season uh tiano barry is like we say we bring in new players to the premier league
31:01some of them are really ready to start some of them might take a little bit of time i think i'd rather
31:05just take my time and ease them in at the right moments but meanwhile beto done really really well
31:10for his last season and no reason to really change him david the big signing uh that's come in is probably
31:17jack grealish that's the one that's got most of the supporters really excited i mean the majority of his
31:22career as being down the left-hand side cutting in on that right foot you see him a more central area
31:29well i see him in both actually i see him being able to play as a 10 if we needed to do so and
31:33and an 11 and actually the ability is not to give the ball away he could easily play as a midfield
31:38player as well but uh i want him for his attacking i want him for his goals and his creativity
31:43uh i hope we can get the jack grealish that that we all know and uh i'm looking forward to getting
31:49them introduced to the side david i think you said the club need 10 signings at the start of the
31:55the summer because so many players moved on being out of contract i mean how many more how many is
32:01that left then to go in the next two weeks well is it well there's a few to go if i have my way jamie
32:06to be fair the club are trying really hard to to help and get the players in uh it was it was
32:12been a difficult summer which a lot of the managers have said in different ways but for us we had
32:16still some issues to sort as well but overall uh you know we're starting to get one or two in
32:21hopefully we can get another few in before the the end of the window
32:26david last one from me if if there was something that you've seen in the opening premier league
32:30uh weekend that sort of has just shocked you or surprised you a little bit what would it be
32:37i don't know if i could shout off the top of my head gary about that i'm not sure i've got anything but
32:41uh i think uh i think we've had quite a few refereeing decisions but i think we're all
32:45questioning a little bit one or two of them already and i think that uh we've had really
32:49good referee meetings we've we've spoke with them all felt as if it was all clear but just
32:53looking at the games and i've not been involved in them yet i just felt there was one or two decisions
32:58which might have gone other ways and different decisions given so that's felt a little bit difficult
33:02on the opening day that would be my feeling but but overall the premier league's back there were
33:06some great games some great goals as well so let's hope we get a really good game tonight as well
33:10any specific decision you're referring to that's sort of you thought
33:18i'm sure you've already checked about gary no doubt about that
33:21david don't start on the referees yeah your team hasn't kicked a ball yet this season come on
33:27thanks david cheers lads good to see you all the best you wish you are have a good season thank you
33:32very much thank you i just wondered when i asked the question about the formation because we had some
33:37really considered that jake o'brien could actually play as a three at the back and they could go with
33:41wing backs well that's something they actually did in the in the pre-season certainly one of the games
33:45i watched it was it was on sky i think they were over in america he went to a three at the back
33:48actually because he didn't have that many center backs i think actually the wide center backs were
33:51full backs in the ng but listen he's tried that in the uh in the summer so maybe that's something
33:56to look at but in the main david moyes is normally a back four man i'd say if i was looking at that team
34:00that's going out there tonight if it didn't have david moyes as a manager obviously he says he wants
34:04to bring some more plays i would be worried about them in terms of the quality that exists within
34:08that squad i think the fact they've got him as a manager he is the star in that club and one of
34:12the things he said he talked about the 10 transfers but i don't know if he meant 10 that were ready
34:17to make an impact on the first team and if you look at the the list of those there obviously jack
34:20greelich when he gets up to speed but he's talked about as new as being you know one for the future
34:26david needs three or four more players yeah he's made that pretty clear he absolutely does i think
34:30to support him you think about the new stadium for everton the size of the club the underperformance
34:35over the years the manager that they've now got they need to back him they need to go now really
34:39and get those two or three four players that will mean that that squad starts to look stronger and
34:42that team more importantly starts to look strong but is he almost like what you said is the star of
34:46the club is like an insurance policy almost now and i talked about the away record last season
34:52five wins from nine games conceding no more than one goal in any of those games
34:57listen it was it was a miraculous job that he did at the uh at the end of last season because
35:02in the main sean dice did a really good job for everton in terms of keeping them up when he first
35:05came in the 10 points i think it was 10 point deduction in his first full season they had no
35:10problems in terms of relegation just made a really poor start to where to last year and he couldn't sort
35:15of get out of it and sort of fix it in any way but david moyes with the same sort of players just added a
35:19little bit more probably a little bit more football i think they ever told you just talk to him a little bit
35:23more maybe than the previous manager but the pre-season hasn't gone as well as he probably
35:27would have liked and uh yeah i don't think this is gonna be really tough game for them tonight
35:31starting against leeds united who are absolutely bang up for their return to the premier league
35:37it'll be a raucous crowd at ellen road and they come up with this momentum that that we talked
35:42about right at the top of the show 95 goals in the championship last season 10 of which were from
35:49fast breaks they were they were electric going forward they had the options from the bench as
35:53well scoring 17 goals um from substitutes strong defensively too as you would expect from
35:59a title winning side they actually had the best xg against numbers if not the the best in terms of
36:05clean sheets and goals conceded how relevant do you think any of this is gary i'm look i'll be honest
36:10with you i'm looking at it and i'm sort of ignoring it a little bit and that's maybe a little bit
36:13disrespectful to a great season that leads have had because i feel like i've seen this before these
36:17parachute clubs that go down with all the excess money in the championship obliterating everybody else and
36:22getting all these stats then they come up and they absolutely to be fair get torn to shreds in the
36:26premier league we've got to judge it completely on what we see tonight i think leeds have invested
36:30in some physical players it looks like the teams that have come up this season are approaching it
36:34differently than maybe some of the clubs that have come up in the last couple of seasons which
36:36i think is healthy but i think there's an element of that that i think we should ignore whilst
36:40respecting the fact that they've done a great job last year in the in the championship we talk a
36:44lot about xg difference on this program on monday night football we talk about the the quality and
36:49quantity of chances you face against the quality and quantity of chances that you create and leeds
36:57last season had an extra difference of 1.33 which is the best that any promoted side has come up to
37:04the premier league with since 2014-15 and it's best by a strong margin that's ahead of a fulham side in
37:1121 22 that were almost equally dominant in the championship but not even by this margin of these
37:17sides the best xg difference in that time only one has been relegated that was the leicester city team
37:24of 23 24 who went down last season and of course they lost their manager enzo mareska to chelsea
37:32at the start of that season does that help give you the idea jamie that this might be difference for
37:40leeds united i hope so i i think in the main most people want at least one maybe more of the promoted
37:47teams to stay in the premier league and that does bode well and also the fact that for me leeds feel
37:52like a premier league club the stadium feels like that and the supporters will expect that as well so
37:56i think going away to leeds for any team in the premier league should be a tough game this season
38:00well let's hear from their manager daniel farker who guided them that incredible 100 point season he
38:06joins us live now good evening daniel welcome back to the the premier league as well can you tell us
38:12if you like start with with what you've learned from your premier league experiences with norwich that
38:18perhaps you feel you're in a better place now
38:22that's a while ago i'm not too much in the reflection mode to be honest so i really liked my time in norwich i
38:29overtook them when there were enough big financial pressure with the team was a bit too old a bit in mid-table
38:35in the championship and once i left they were playing in the premier league with the exciting
38:39young team new training grounds invested into the stadium so i had a really really good time with it
38:45but obviously in during this times we were not made to compete on on premier league level that was
38:52not even a hidden secret from if i'm honest so but this time so over i'm right now fully switched on
38:57in order to make out of leeds united then hopefully also a club who can label themselves then also in a few
39:04years and um and establish premier league side because we all know that this club with this
39:09potential with this huge fan base they belong to the premier league and we have spent not enough
39:14years in the last two decades in the top flight of english football and we want to we want to change
39:18this okay your previous promotion experiences the club wasn't ready the team wasn't ready but what
39:23about leeds united right now do you feel you are ready for this premier league challenge
39:27we're on a good pass so we had obviously something to to build on a good good squad we have improved
39:36a lot and the central defense in the central midfield goalkeeper fullback position i like to name it how i
39:44see it and and i've spoken about that we have to do some business in the in the offense with dominic we
39:50have a really good really good signing i think it's it's a first step we are prepared to be competitive
39:56for one two perhaps three games till the first international break but we are not prepared yet
40:01for a long season with 38 games when there are also the games are coming thick and fast and some
40:06injuries so we definitely need to add some quality uh up front that but this doesn't take anything away
40:11that we feel we are also prepared to be competitive in the next upcoming games and we are able also to
40:17grind out results and this is what we want to do yeah starting today daniel yeah we can't help but notice
40:23all the signings that you've brought in a six foot plus you've said they're not here to play basketball
40:29they're here to play football but how important is the physicality in the premier league
40:36yes like you mentioned it uh jamie of course we want want to play football and it's uh it's not like
40:41if you're a giant you have a good chance to be signed by by leeds united so first and foremost they
40:45are really really good football players but it's also important to be not naive as a newly promoted side of
40:51course we have to defend more corners we have to defend more wide area free kicks probably also
40:56more crosses into our half and on uh into our box and uh also up front the importance in order to use
41:04perhaps also set pieces and to score out of these situations also quite important so for that uh it
41:09definitely helps also that we have at some physicality um and and also strong players in in this terms but
41:16one thing is also for sure if someone expects us right now just to park the boss and put the ball
41:21over the stand into the next river so i will have to disappoint you so we still want to play we still
41:27want to play football and want don't want to lose our dna but not a knife way we know when we have the
41:33the big teams are coming it's not like you can dominate in each of the game 70 80 percent possession
41:38like we did more or less in each and every other game on on championship level it's important not to be
41:42naive also to adapt to the reality and i think we found some really good additions who are really
41:48good footballers good on the ball but also bring this physicality that is needed especially for a
41:53newly promoted side in the top flight and yeah hopefully the plan works out daniel speaking to
41:58a couple of league united fans out of the new signings the one that they seem most excited about
42:02is stack the boy in midfield can you just tell us a little bit about him and how you think he'll adapt
42:07to the premier league if i'm honest i'm excited about all our signings but about anton of course i can
42:14tell you a little bit for us it was also important in the in the center of the game in the heart of the
42:19game to have also proven players players who have delivered on the on the top level if it's on
42:24premier league or bundesliga or la liga level and anton 100 fits into this group he's already
42:30experienced by age um yeah to get call-ups for the german national team you don't win it in the lottery
42:36so he's a really proven player um also mentally strong intelligent player understands uh the game
42:43brings the physicality that that we need and it's also really good on the ball he is a pretty pretty
42:48complex player it was definitely one of my my dream and wish shinings for this for the seasons he had
42:54a really good preseason but yeah i'm a big fan not like just to talk the talk walk the box so not one
43:00game is played he has to prove it right now when the real stuff starts so preseason yeah it's nice to
43:06deliver on on this level right now he has to prove why we've signed him uh also in the competitive
43:10games so i trust him and i'm confident he will be able to prove this but let's just sing sing his
43:17praise after a few good games uh in the in the competitive games and then i'm also willing to
43:22tell you perhaps even a bit more about anton but i'm pretty happy with the signing i can tell
43:29last time in the premier league we saw nanto and he's back in the premier league now for us to watch him
43:33again where is he today compared to where he was a few years back when we watched him when he was
43:38absolutely sensational he showed great potential do you think he can become the real thing
43:44two years more experienced um i think it's also important not to put too much pressure on him because
43:50it was a season where we as a club were struggling struggling a lot and and of course everyone was
43:55searching for some glimpses and then 18 or this time 18 19 year old young winger exciting winger
44:02as also carries a lot lots lots of spotlight and perhaps um you have also a bit the tendency to
44:08overrate what he has done but we know that he can play on the on the top level and i think he's also
44:14much more a complete player right now because he has added a few strengths also to his to his game he was
44:20always an exciting mobile young winger but also by experience right now also his work against the ball is
44:26is becoming better better his endurance but it's the same so he has to prove it again right now
44:31in different scenario in different setup um also that he can uh can have a big big impact we back
44:38willie because he had also a really good a really good pre-season but right now the real stuff starts
44:42it's up up to prove your worth and willie has all chances and we're also all happy that we have willie
44:49daniel thank you so much for your time you've been very generous we know you have better things to do
44:53the good news is for you though uh we've talked to your chairman as well um pareg marate who's told
44:58us that more new signings are coming so you can take that away as a promise from him thank you so
45:05much and we wish you well thanks a lot have a good evening enjoy the game daniel farker clearly very
45:12enthusiastic about um this season starting tonight this is the the reference point about the the height of
45:18the signings that we were just discussing that is quite stark isn't it it is but i mean how many
45:24times in the last couple of years i mean i've watched a lot of the shows you had russell martin on last
45:28year where we've watched teams come up with championship center back championship defenders
45:32championship goalkeepers playing against the best teams in the league and playing five-yard passes
45:36horizontally on their own six-yard line to be to be fair to russell martin gary when he came on he
45:40actually he's accepted he said the thing that he wish if he went again he's actually actually
45:44actually physicality so that that's a response to actually to be fair it always used to be maybe
45:5015 20 years ago and we say that basically the game's changed but maybe there's actually a way
45:54that we're going back to what we saw 20 years when teams came up from the championship it was make it
45:59bloody hard to play against you so if you played against stoke or wimbledon or crystal palace brentford
46:03when they first came into the premier league it was a physical battle set pieces long balls making
46:08sure that you don't make mistakes taking less chances and risking your own defensive half and that's what
46:13these teams have to do they have to stay in the game and i'm just talking about staying in the
46:16individual game stay in the game towards the end of the season and they have to pick up points and
46:20it's very difficult to do how can you take on liverpool manchester united tottenham arsenal newcastle
46:24at football it's impossible why would you do it man united there's always a little
46:33three of those signings uh stack perry and goodmanson make their debut from the start tonight there
46:36could be more to come as the evening goes on at ellen road leeds united starting their return to the
46:41premier league against everton next more weekend analysis for you really good start that for thomas
46:47frank at tottenham hot spur against burnley we'll analyze that and maybe a bit of a new look to
46:54manchester city as well
47:02lucas perry starts in goal for leeds united tonight he was part of a leon side that made it through to
47:07europe league quarterfinals last season and he is at the number one for leeds united and jaden bogle is
47:13the number two a slight surprise to see he hasn't played a lot of football pre-season with injury but
47:18it's a real boost to have such an influential figure from last season in the starting lineup along with
47:23some new faces more new faces anton stack you heard how enthusiastic daniel farker about his new
47:30midfield recruit and everton have new faces making their premier league debuts as well keenan dewsbury hall
47:38makes his first everton start better was pretty successful under david moise at the back end of last
47:45season and perhaps that explains why he starts the season as everton striker and new signing 22 year old
47:53tierno barry has to wait for his opportunity he's on the bench as is jack grealish on loan as we know
48:00from manchester city i think a lot of people were were maybe hoping to see jack grealish in from the
48:07start tonight perhaps everton fans amongst them do you see this as a big opportunity for jack to really
48:13reignite his career gary yeah your career is a short one in professional football and someone like him
48:21the skill the excitement that he brings to football fans you need to see him on the pitch and he's got
48:26to a point his career now he's probably got five or six years left where he needs to play football
48:30influence games every single week um and he'll be a big signing for everton he's a leveling quality
48:36above anything that they've got by a million miles he's got to stay fit he's got to make sure that he
48:40basically sets a good standard he's been a treble winning player at manchester city and those everton
48:45fans and those everton players that are around him will be sort of hanging off his every word hanging
48:48off his everything so he's got to become a leader he's got to mature in the way in which he obviously
48:52is and recognize his position in football is a big one jamie you asked the question i think a lot of
48:57people were wondering of david moyes whether he sees him as a 10 or as a wide player did you were you
49:03convinced by by sort of david's response on that what what do you read into it no i mean i read into it
49:09because i think his brother put on instagram he was going to play in the tent
49:15it popped up somewhere so i thought to throw it at moisey but uh but no i mean you just said the
49:20the players in the dressing room will be exciting to give them a lift i think it's give the supporters
49:24a lift it's okay bringing lots of players and people get excited about it but there's nothing
49:27better than a player who you know you've watched week after week you know he's a top player he's won the
49:32champions league he's won the treble at manchester city but what i would say is i think in some ways if you're
49:38an everton supporter you want to see the aston villa the jackie of aston villa where everything
49:43went through he was getting fouls he was always involved i think that's what ever need and to lift
49:47the standards of everybody that's something that roy said yesterday who knows him well he said you'll
49:50win an awful lot of fouls for everton and everton obviously are a big team in terms of set pieces
49:54that'll be a big advantage for them the free kicks that he wins all right so everton with new signings
49:59that they are drip feeding into the start of this new season and it's the same story for leeds united
50:06dan james i was a key part of their promotion winning side so too their captain ethan ampadu
50:12at a tough first game up against a stubborn everton side it's on the way in just a moment
