03:45tournament and of course with their manager they'll make it difficult for liverpool this evening so
03:50great game to start to kick off this competition with for liverpool michael what have you made of the
03:54way that liverpool have been approaching games and having to see games off like mo salah to the
03:58rescue against burnley yeah they've left it late um a few times already this season this was a huge
04:04penalty pressure penalty from mo salah and he has missed one or two in recent uh weeks so there would
04:10have been he would have had that in the back of his mind but you don't really want to be dropping
04:13points against burn it would have felt like two points dropped um but as it is you know you can only
04:20imagine the thoughts for players of arsenal the manager and fans of arsenal manchester city when
04:24liverpool score another late goal it's almost like a a dagger in the heart every time so they haven't
04:30been at the best at all so far this season but that's understandable lots of new players and it's
04:35going to take a little bit of time but to get 12 points out of 12 in the premier league not playing
04:39great is a great sign it is a great sign isn't it because look this team isn't even fully gelled yet
04:44they've got more players coming in isek of course that we've mentioned a couple of times tonight
04:47the stats like this the first team in premier league history to win four straight uh games
04:52while winning goals after the 80th minute the players aren't really going to be looking at that
04:56and and being one worrying macker are they no not at all i mean a lot of people have made something
05:00about late games but it doesn't matter whether you scored in the first five minutes or the last five
05:04minutes as long as you get the victory teams get tired late on psychologically they start to drop deep
05:11if one team's dominant dominant the other team will drop deep to defend their goal so it becomes chance
05:15after chance after chance and mentally and physically you have to be really really strong
05:19and that's what bernie lacked the other day they just switched off a little bit but that normally
05:23happens with the lesser sides so it's not it's not necessarily a term of liverpool you know getting
05:30a bit of fortune the fact that they keep on going the manager makes good decisions good substitutions
05:35that's what drives them home in the end and i think you'd actually prefer to score late than early
05:39wouldn't you i mean it gives you such a good feeling in the dressing room afterwards i mean the worst thing in
05:43the world you score early and then you're maybe hanging on for the last 15 minutes i think your
05:47confidence can sort of ebb away a little bit if that's happening but when you're the aggressor
05:51when you're piling the pressure on and then you score late on it gives you a great feeling the
05:56dressing i think you need to play better they didn't play well against newcastle they were
06:00fortunate against newcastle they were not necessarily fortunate against bernie they had 81
06:04possession but against bournemouth they weren't at the best and against newcastle they weren't at the
06:08best and they scored late so they do have to address that don't they yeah that shows good
06:12mentality doesn't it and let's say from one of the players they know stalwart in this side andy
06:16robertson he's getting a start tonight and he's been catching up with jewels
06:21andy these champions league nights at anfield must be pretty special as a player and there was a chance
06:27that you could have been walking down that way to the away dressing room after your links with
06:30atletico madrid in the summer but glad to be going that way instead yeah of course um you know anfield
06:36nights are special um i'm very lucky that i've been here for eight years now experience some
06:41amazing games um you know amazing nights here and you know the fans always make it special in
06:46a champions league night so um you know hopefully the same today we want to go off the good start
06:50you know we had a good you know league campaign last last season obviously then we got out in the
06:55last 16 but you know the league campaign was pretty spot on and we know we need to get off the
06:59good start to to be in the top eight where you need to be to you know guarantee the last 16.
07:04being vice captain shows how highly regarded you are at the club and you get your first start
07:08of the campaign tonight but has it been difficult fighting for your place this season yeah look
07:13it's been it's been difficult um but you know the communication with the manager and the coaches
07:17has been has been very good it's been um you know we've always kept that kind of good relationship
07:22and um you know obviously i knew there was going to be more competition this season more um you
07:27know more um you know rest of me not playing and things like that i knew the start of the season
07:31was going to be difficult with you know when you go week to week there's not too many changes in this
07:35team and we're winning games which is the most pleasing thing and but i knew if i kept doing what
07:40i'll do you know hopefully get my chance and it's up to me to you know to try and keep doing that so
07:44obviously got good minutes with international team which helped massively to keep match fitness and then
07:48um you know probably played a bit more than expected that the at the weekend just due to
07:52circumstances and then you know obviously delighted to start tonight you're one of the few players that's still
07:57at liverpool that was on the wrong end of that crazy atletico madrid comeback here in 2020 does
08:03that match that result the way it all turns around show that anything in this competition is possible
08:08yeah of course it was uh it was a madness game um i think the next day we all went into lockdown
08:13which was even more madness to think how long ago that was but um you know we know how good this
08:18team can be um you know the manager the players that have got so much quality within the squad and
08:22they showed that the last time they came here with um you know how difficult they made it for us over
08:27two ties and uh two legs and obviously we went to extra time that night things like that they just
08:31didn't quite go away but you know they're a really good team they always kind of want to go far in
08:35this tournament they always prove that and then there's going to be another difficult game but we
08:39believe if we do the right things then hopefully we can get the right result to to get our campaign

12:49training week and in the end of that training week you can play 45 maybe 60 minutes and that's what we're
12:55going to see with him today and um so yeah that was the plan all the way arno you've got lots of
13:02different attacking options and inevitably they will all play their fair amount of minutes throughout
13:06the season in terms of isak and ekatike in particular do you see them as exclusively down
13:12the center or can one of them play maybe on the left not yeah everything is always possible so they can
13:18but i think for alex number nine is is is by far his best position hugo has played in the
13:25past when he was younger as a winger as well but then he started to grow more and more and more
13:31although cody kakpo shows us that even if you are very tall you can still be a very good and
13:36talented winger so hugo could be a player that could play off the left side not in the way cody or mo
13:42is playing with holding the whiff and then taking the one few ones on but he could become a second
13:48striker but in general i think it's um both of them are more number nines than than another position
13:55gaffi you ran the champions very close last year you lost on penalties to psg what have you learned
14:01from that to this year to try and win the competition
14:08nah not only the game we played against them i think in general what what i admired what i
14:13liked a lot in paris is that they were so aggressive in their pressing
14:18yeah i have to add to that it is maybe a little bit easier if you play in the weekend in the french
14:25league which is still a good league but not as good as the premier league so he could rest once in a
14:30while players as well to have them completely ready for uh for the game during the week so what i've learned
14:36maybe is that in in march when we also played the final again in the for the league cup that in that moment
14:42of time we were not on our best we had to play from november till march mainly with the same players
14:48and i think that's also the reason why we won the league but it might also been the reason
14:52why we were not playing at our best in paris we were really good here by the way
14:57so maybe in that period of time i need to rotate a bit more
15:02that could help us being fitter in march but you never know what then would have happened
15:07in the other games we played in the in the premier league where we clinched our title maybe also in
15:12that period of time and i just have to ask about the challenge of atletico madrid tonight and uh and
15:18also diego simione what you're expecting from this match uh similar to what you can expect when we play
15:25premier league it's uh a lot of quality in this team as well i've played them two years ago i think
15:31with feinord so i know how good i saw with my own eyes how good griezmann still was back then and
15:37probably still is and we all know when it comes to simiona that his teams are so aggressive without the
15:45ball throwing themselves in front of shots doing everything to keep a clean sheet but also comfortable
15:52with the ball very good in transition so another difficult team to face which we faced in the first
15:59four games yeah of the primary league season as well okay and before we let you go we just have

17:27and atletico madrid that is my rival in madrid but uh yeah i think will be a great game rafa were

17:42ask the reason i ask if you still live over here is because um we were looking at the fans earlier on

17:55good memories and i was enjoying here i was asked a few times the best place that i was coaching
18:02and to be fair here they treat me really really well so and still they treat me really well so i was
18:08enjoying every minute here and then when i come here i can see the atmosphere you can see the grass
18:14that is perfect so you can play nice football now everything is fine here yeah um i need to ask what you
18:18think about the way that liverpool have started this season so far and and your hope your expectations
18:24i suppose for this side i think that they didn't expect to do so well sorry that they were not
18:31expecting to do so well with young players new players coming so they are with 12 points i think
18:36so they are really really happy because even changing players even bringing new players still they are
18:42performing a very good level how difficult is that rafa when you bring in so many players as a manager to
18:46get them to gel really quickly it's quite complicated but depending on how many and how many you start
18:53playing so you play a couple of them the others they have more time but i think because they know some
18:58of them the premier league so it's easier but the information that i have i am sure that you have the
19:03same information slot is quite clear in the message so the players they understand quickly what is going
19:09on what they are expecting or they or he's expecting from them and they is straight away they start
19:15performing so it's not that i want to do this or that but no no i say i want this and they do it so
19:20it's easier we've got alexander isak starting tonight making his debut here at anfield in front of
19:26these fans he is so prolific and so dangerous at one of your former clubs newcastle how well do you
19:32think he will do at this club i will tell you a secret talking with the newcastle united people they
19:38say they are missing him because he was doing so well he was as you say adapted to the to the style to the
19:44game and he's clever the movements he can play in the middle but goes wide he runs in behind dribbling
19:49so i think will be a great signing for liverpool and a big miss for newcastle united huge miss and
19:54that's for another conversation on on another day um but for the champions league maca was just talking
19:59to anna slot about the disappointment that they experienced last year what do you make of not just
20:04this format but the competition that's up against liverpool this year with this format i think they
20:09you have even more chances because they are very consistent performing well so they can get more
20:15points and they can progress and if they have this experience already they will be much better next

21:13has actually seen lots and lots of him in the liverpool academy but uh i guess i do know the
21:18feeling of coming in as such a young boy although not quite as young as him i was 17 making my debut he
21:23was 16 um but wow what a what an incredible you know uh announcement let's say he's made that finish
21:30against newcastle was sublime i don't buy into the pressure and things like that these are young
21:36lads coming in they're exceptional at what they do they go out onto the pitch and just love playing
21:41football i can guarantee you they don't go to bed thinking oh my word i'm you know 60 000 people
21:46gonna watch me what am i gonna do it's not like that people think there's lots of pressure it's not
21:51it's great it's great fun you're playing with great players and the prize is big so listen he's
21:57going to be protected right the way through his career or certainly in the early stages of his
22:01career but what a lovely talent it's great to see him starting so well and let's hope he can continue

22:15also a chance that he might take another record off you in europe as well if he scores this season

22:50on the new generation they go they are on tick tock they know the players they know the start and they
22:56go oh i can play with this one so i think it's a something in that it's good for them so it's an
23:00advantage for them but you have to be careful as he said you have to manage you cannot say oh he will
23:06play you need to think maybe he will need protection maybe not somewhere maybe not but you have to be sure
23:12that you are around just in case he needs protection yes to manage it um apparently i'm being told that
23:17we can't leave this conversation without showing michael owen's goal the one that we were talking
23:20about against celtic this was in 1997. michael i'll let you talk us over this one well nobody remembers
