00:00On November 10, 2019, police responded to a 911 call from a woman claiming that her husband, Deputy Sheriff Winford Adams, had just shot and killed a man she'd been having an affair with.
00:11When the police arrived on scene, Winford refused to drop his firearm and come outside.
00:30Take this. Turn this. He's going for more. Put it down. Drop it. Put it down. Do not go in the house. Hey, don't go in the house. Help him.
00:44He's a police officer with the Madison County Sheriff's deputy. Can you talk to him or to somebody or not until he.
00:52Ma'am, can you stand over there? Can you get that car over there, please?
00:556-9 Central. The caller's advising the man with the gun inside is a deputy for the Madison County.
01:00He is still alive.
01:03Is he cautious?
01:04Yes. That's how we got your name.
01:08No, you got my name from my wife.
01:11No, I got it from him. Put your gun down and come out and talk to us.
01:15Pray.
01:18Please, let me get better, okay?
01:20Okay. Hey, look. If you're sorry, if you mean that, that tells me if you're upstanding, you can, we can work through it.
01:34I got it. I got it. I got it. I got it. I got it.
01:37I got it. I got it.
01:38Are you cutting off mine?
01:40Yeah, I can't. I can't. I can't, can you?
01:42Let me get it.
01:43I'm going after this.
01:44Okay, guys.
01:45Yeah.
01:46Yeah.
01:46Everything I said to him, I consent. I'm fine with talking. I'm fine with it being funded for.
01:57I understand that.
01:57But I want to make sure it's clear. I'm not difficult.
02:00Okay, yeah.
02:01I'm not going to be one of the asshole people y'all have to talk to.
02:04Listen to me. You know the only concern I have right now and the thing that is good out of all this?
02:09I am happy that you did not put us in a situation to have to shoot you.
02:13I would have never done that.
02:14I am, listen, I am also happy you did not shoot you.
02:18No matter what happened, I, it ain't worth it.
02:21That's my opinion, okay?
02:23You got plenty of life left to live. Live it.
02:27That's all I got to say.
02:28I don't know why.
02:30Listen, hey.
02:30Well, no, when the tenant showed up, I don't know why.
02:33For some reason, I didn't feel like I could do it with him here.
02:36Good. I'm glad.
02:38Because it keeps you alive.
02:40Tonight I lost a wife.
02:42Tonight I probably lost my land.
02:45Well, listen to me.
02:46Don't, don't stress out about it.
02:49We're in the present.
02:50Don't worry about what's already happened.
02:52Move on.
02:53Own it.
02:55Own it.
02:56No, I'm not.
02:57And that's what I'm saying. Own it.
02:58You're already saying you want to. Deal with it.
03:00Move on with life.
03:01After securing Deputy Sheriff Adams and then putting him into a patrol car,
03:05an officer speaks with his wife, Charlotte.
03:07I mean, I have some yoga friends.
03:09This is just so embarrassing.
03:11Well, don't think of it as embarrassing.
03:13It's traumatic, right?
03:14Your friends are going to want to be there for you.
03:16I don't want my job.
03:17No.
03:18And Lloyd's part of my work.
03:19And I, they already hate me there.
03:22Because I went to Georgia Southern.
03:24This is the last thing I need right now.
03:27with his hands around my neck and was screaming at me like,
03:31you cheating s**t.
03:33And, um, and I kept telling him, no, but he's just a friend.
03:38It's not like that.
03:39You know?
03:40I mean, I was fully dressed and so is Lloyd.
03:42I mean, legitimately, we're just friends.
03:45And I would tell you the truth if we weren't.
03:47I would tell you.
03:48I would tell you.
03:49Charlotte and her husband would both be transported down to the local police department
03:53and put into separate interrogation rooms to be interviewed.
03:55They begin with Winford to get his side of the story.
03:58Then they will move on to his wife and get hers.
04:00At this point, Winford, also known as Trey,
04:03doesn't know his victim died from the gunshot wounds.
04:06Just relax and breathe.
04:08This is hard.
04:10I love everything in my life tonight and I don't think that
04:15I've ever made so many people debt for this disappointed.
04:19Well, I guess why don't we just go ahead and kind of start from the beginning.
04:24Like, what happened today?
04:26I've never had friends before.
04:28I, um, when I was growing up, I was always a kid that was made fun of
04:32and people were me too and all that all the way up through high school.
04:35I've never really had friends.
04:37I've never had the people that just wanted to hang out with you.
04:40Right.
04:41After the last, the previous incident years ago, we kind of had, I'm just going to say it,
04:47rules about if she went out.
04:49Yeah.
04:50Which were supposed to be no drinking, no guy, you know,
04:54if things get weird, call me.
04:56Right.
04:57I watched her and all night and all night and all night, um,
05:00looked at her location to see where she was going
05:04only because I've been sick today and I was hungry.
05:07And if she was going somewhere, I was going to hang discreetly and bring something back.
05:11Right.
05:12And I saw she was there.
05:15She didn't tell you where she was going to get something to eat?
05:19She just said she was going to go meet, uh, meet the AI people when they were having dinner.
05:23Oh.
05:24I just, I feel so terrible.
05:27Well, you definitely got a lot going on next.
05:30I should have done this tonight.
05:33Well, I think you did.
05:35And I didn't mean to.
05:36Like, I will go ahead and say that.
05:38There was no intention of me going there to do this.
05:41I ended up driving by because I felt bad and I wanted to see, like, are there a bunch of cars there?
05:50There wasn't.
05:51There was her car and one other car.
05:54And I drove by, like, six or seven times.
05:57And, um, I finally parked wherever my truck was.
06:02I don't exactly know what house it was in front of.
06:04And I was like, this is wrong.
06:06But I need to know for sure if she's never been straight with me and I need to know for sure.
06:15And so I locked my truck and, um, I walked up and there were some windows that were kind of open.
06:22And all I was looking for was, was there a table?
06:24Was there people around?
06:25You know, maybe one car picked up a bunch of people.
06:28Oh, you didn't park in a driveway?
06:29No.
06:30I, I was afraid because if I was wrong, I didn't want her to see me and be mad.
06:35I didn't want to seem like I was jealous.
06:37I didn't want to be crazy.
06:39You know, I just, I feel bad.
06:41And when I have nobody on my side, you know, she, she blamed me too after the Halloween thing.
06:48She blamed me because she said, yeah, none of her friends want to see her.
06:51And it's my fault.
06:52She has no friends.
06:53And, um, so I walked around.
06:57There were a couple windows.
06:58I didn't see anything.
06:59And then I saw on the front porch, there was an open window.
07:02And then I see her laying on the couch and he's behind her and he's got his arms wrapped around her.
07:08Like they're sitting up?
07:09No, they're laying down.
07:10Oh, okay.
07:11Were they clothed?
07:12They were clothed.
07:14Um, I opened the door.
07:17And as soon as I opened the door, they both jumped up and the deer in the headlight looked.
07:22Yeah.
07:23It was locked up.
07:24It was unlocked.
07:25And, um, I initially didn't want to yell at both of them.
07:29And I looked them both in the eyes and then she said, he's just a friend, he's just a friend.
07:38And I think I said something along the lines of, you don't do that with friends, you know?
07:43Yeah.
07:44That's cool.
07:45Yeah.
07:46No, that's totally right on that.
07:49I had forgotten I had my gun on because that's why I locked my truck.
07:54Because I know you all found all the guns in there.
07:57Was that your service weapon or was it a personal weapon?
08:00It was my personal weapon.
08:02Yeah, they looked at me and Charlotte started, like, saying stuff.
08:06I don't even remember what she said.
08:08For whatever reason, I don't know why.
08:10I didn't think I'd, as dumb as it sounds, everything went in flow at that moment and it felt like I had no control over any of it.
08:19Like, I was being forced to watch it, but I didn't.
08:23Yeah.
08:24Yeah.
08:25Yeah, imagine that.
08:26And I pulled the gun out and I pointed it at him.
08:30Charlotte started yelling at me, like, I don't remember what she said, but she was screaming.
08:35And she started grabbing at me and I will say I pushed her, but I was afraid the gun was going to go off because she was clawing all over me and I was scared.
08:44And then he bolted.
08:46And I don't know, I didn't even aim it.
08:50I was holding it out like that and I know two or three rounds, I don't, I know two or three went off and, um.
09:02Inside the house or outside?
09:04Inside the house.
09:05He was running out the front door and, and then it was immediate, oh my God.
09:13So when you were shooting, you know, he was running away?
09:16Yeah.
09:17Okay.
09:18How many times did you shoot?
09:19Two to three times.
09:20Okay.
09:21I immediately felt bad.
09:22And as dumb as that sounds, that's why I called y'all, I immediately felt bad.
09:27I feel like shit, I cannot believe that I did this and I, my life is over.
09:33Like, and everybody keeps saying you can come back.
09:36If, if he's going to be okay, at a minimum, I'm, I know roughly charges that I'm facing and I know what will happen to me.
09:45I know.
09:47I can totally see that.
09:49Like, I would give anything right now to just go to the hospital, look him in the eye and just say I'm sorry, even if he says he hates me.
09:56I just, I'm going to go to y'all's jail and pray that because I was a cop I get a cell by myself so I don't get stabbed.
10:04I feel like I'm losing everything and I'm never going to get the dog to anybody again.
10:11When a man catches his wife cheating, his rage is often misdirected at her lover, who he sees as a rival or an intruder.
10:18Attacking the other man feels like a way to reclaim his pride, his dominance and control.
10:22In this case, even though his wife had cheated on him multiple times, Winford would make excuses for her so he could put the blame on her lovers instead of his wife.
10:31Tell me about tonight.
10:34When I got, when Trey got home, I was trying to get out of there real quick, but he was right there in the driveway.
10:44And so, anyway, I just told him that, like, I was going to, I was going to go eat dinner and I would be right back.
10:54And I was. Lloyd and I would be able to account for R.I.M.
10:58No, first of all, it was L.I.M.
11:01L.I.M.
11:02L.I.M.
11:03L.I.M.
11:04L.I.M.
11:05L.I.M.
11:06L.I.M.
11:07L.I.M.
11:08L.I.M.
11:09L.I.M.
11:10L.I.M.
11:11L.I.M.
11:12L.I.M.
11:13L.I.M.
11:14L.I.M.
11:15L.I.M.
11:16L.I.M.
11:17L.I.M.
11:18L.I.M.
11:19L.I.M.
11:20L.I.M.
11:21L.I.M.
11:22L.I.M.
11:23L.I.M.
11:24L.I.M.
11:25L.I.M.
11:26L.I.M.
11:27L.I.M.
11:28L.I.M.
11:29L.I.M.
11:30L.I.M.
11:31L.I.M.
11:32No, not at all.
11:39You're platonic friend?
11:41Literally platonic friend.
11:42Okay.
11:43Like, literally never kissed him, never did anything with him, never even, we never even
11:49went anywhere with that.
11:52That's just, that's how I view Lloyd.
11:54He's a work friend, he's been to yoga with me, he's a yoga friend.
11:58Okay.
11:59You know, it's like...
12:00Charlotte claims that Lloyd was just her friend, however, her husband not only saw them cuddling
12:05on the couch, when he went into the home, he saw several used male contraceptives lying
12:10on Lloyd's bed.
12:11I mean, I've tried to be so good, I've tried to live within his rules, and he scares me
12:18so bad because I know, I know he's a good person, but he has some issues that he's struggling
12:26with.
12:27And I've been trying to help him, you know, I've been trying to not piss him off.
12:32You said he scares you so bad, what do you mean he scares you so bad?
12:37It's just like, his energy, like, just his actions, like, I haven't felt like, I feel like
12:47he's always just really mad at me, and like, he doesn't love me, and like, he's just like
12:53this close to just like snapping, and I don't know what he would do if, if, I mean, I guess
13:02now I know.
13:03He literally knew where I was.
13:06He was literally outside watching, and burst down the door.
13:12Like, it updates every 30 seconds, which he was telling me.
13:17Like, my GPS, because he made me share, he didn't make me, but, you know, he requested
13:23that I share my location with him, and then he shares his location with me.
13:28By interviewing Charlotte, the detectives are trying to figure out if she played a part
13:32in the victim's death.
13:33Did she leave her location on, knowing that her husband would find her, and possibly do
13:38something that would result in him going to jail?
13:40Is there more to this story than just a husband finding his wife in the arms of another man?
13:45It's just so embarrassing, you know?
13:47It's like, ugh.
13:48So why did you tell him you were going to get something to eat, and he would be right
13:51back if you were going over to Lloyd's house?
13:55Yeah, because I was going to go to Lloyd's house for like 20 minutes, get some risks, and
13:59then leave.
14:00I was about to leave.
14:03Uh, I mean, it had only been like, I don't even know how Trey got there that fast, or maybe
14:08I lost track of time.
14:10I should have left earlier.
14:12And you say it's about 20 minutes from your house to Lloyd's house, and when you got there,
14:18it seemed like you had only been there just a few minutes.
14:22You just popped a little bit and had four ribs, you said.
14:25Yeah.
14:26Mm-hmm.
14:27I don't even know if I finished my fourth rib, because...
14:29And you were the only person there with Lloyd?
14:31Yeah, I thought that this roommate would be there, because he's supposed to be there
14:36on, so, um, so Lloyd kept asking me about Trey, you know?
14:43Yeah.
14:44I just, I kept looking out the window, like always, because I'm afraid that Trey is going
14:51to come up there, and I'm afraid that he is going to kill me and whoever I'm with.
14:58Now, what makes you think that, though?
15:02I mean, you said you never had any physical altercations.
15:05Well, you have said before that he would kill me and whoever, if I ever cheated on him.
15:14And that's what he thought was going on when he came over there.
15:19Okay.
15:20So, tell me when everything started to happen.
15:24How did that go down?
15:25I was hearing this feeling, you know, looking, uh, I was freaked out.
15:34What do you mean?
15:36I kept looking out the window, like, is that Trey's car?
15:41Are those his headlights?
15:42Is he here?
15:44I know he's coming.
15:46So, describe, describe the house, describe the driveway.
15:50Why were you looking out to see if anybody was outside?
15:53Were you nervous that he had followed you?
15:55Why were you nervous?
15:57Well, I felt like if he saw that I was at Lloyd's house, A, I'm not supposed to be at a guy's house.
16:04I'm trying to figure out, um, you know, when you got there, you said you were there only a short period of time, and you kept looking out the window.
16:13Okay, because you felt Trey might be coming over.
16:19And then, just tell me what happened.
16:22We'll go through what happened if we have any questions.
16:24And I had just gotten more ribs, and I couldn't even finish my rib, and Lloyd's laying there on the floor.
16:30And I was, like, uh, saying something, and then, uh...
16:36So, Lloyd is on the floor?
16:38Lloyd is on the floor, laying there.
16:41Just laying on the floor?
16:43Yeah, with his feet up on the couch.
16:45Mm-hmm.
16:46And I'm sitting here at his table, sitting on a chair, like, eating my rib.
16:52Talking about stuff.
16:54And then I, you know, once again, I'm the instigator.
16:58I'm, like, Lloyd, I'm getting really scared, like, I'm really, really scared.
17:05So, I got on the floor, and I curled up next to him in a ball.
17:11So, then Lloyd's got his arm around me, like, uh, he was kind of, like, laughing, like, I can't see...
17:19And why did you say he was really scared?
17:20Because I was getting really scared, because I just kept getting all these feelings that Trey was out there.
17:31Trey was coming for me, like...
17:34So, why don't you just...
17:35Just leave?
17:37I was gonna leave, but I just wanted, I just wanted, like, one hug to, like, get me through,
17:44Because I knew I was gonna get bitched at by Trey, and it was gonna be a cold, dark, freaking next couple days, and...
17:54So, I just wanted just a little bit of work, just, just, just a little hug, you know, for, like, five minutes, and then I was gonna go.
18:04Well, then Lloyd's, like...
18:07He's gonna just, like, lay on the couch.
18:11Hold on, I get it.
18:13I'm like, I guess Lloyd's maybe in pain or something.
18:17I'm like, okay, we'll lay here for, like, a second.
18:21And then...
18:23And then I just stopped talking, and I was like, I better not fall asleep.
18:27This is what happened last time.
18:30Lloyd had his arms around me.
18:33On the couch.
18:34On the couch.
18:35Four girls.
18:37Never done anything.
18:39Like, it's not like that.
18:41And, um...
18:43And I should've just gone right then, but all of a sudden, Lloyd heard something.
18:49And he sat up, and I started to sit up, and the door comes open, and Lloyd jumps up off of the couch.
18:59I jump up off of the couch.
19:01And all of a sudden, I see Trey, and he's in his red sweatshirt, and he's screaming at me.
19:13And he started screaming, you cheating, and I kept saying, he's a friend, he's a friend, it's not like that.
19:23And he was like, you've been lying to me.
19:25And he said something, like, I think he said you hurt me at one point, but maybe that was outside when he said, you hurt me so bad.
19:33I'm not sure.
19:35But he was yelling at me about something.
19:42And he said, I saw you.
19:44I was looking through the window, and I saw he had his arm around you.
19:50And I was like, it was just a hug.
19:53He's just a friend.
19:55It's not like that.
19:57And I don't know if he kept, if he had been, if he was shoving Lloyd or something, but Lloyd was still over there by the couch, I think.
20:10But I could tell Lloyd was trying to get to the door.
20:13Okay, the front door?
20:15Uh-huh, which was still open.
20:17Still trying to tell Trey that Lloyd was just a friend, and I was like pushing on him.
20:25He shoved Lloyd, and he kept trying to shove me down next to Lloyd like he was going to execute us both on the floor.
20:37Which is kind of flattering.
20:39Like, Lloyd should have run.
20:41He should have been like, that's this girl.
20:44I don't even know her hardly, and I don't care if she gets strangled, and how dare she bring this guy.
20:51You know, like he even said before Trey came over, are you going to get me murdered by your husband?
20:59He literally said that before we got on the couch.
21:03I forgot to say that.
21:04He was trying to escape out the door behind Trey because I could still see Lloyd when Trey drew his gun on him.
21:14And Lloyd had his back to him and was running out the door.
21:22Yeah, because when Trey went to shoot Lloyd, I saw him.
21:27I saw the back of him running out like his...
21:31You saw the back of who running out? Lloyd?
21:34Lloyd.
21:35Okay.
21:36So Trey shot Lloyd as he was running away?
21:40Yeah, Lloyd was already on the porch when Trey was shooting.
21:43So Lloyd managed to get out the front door?
21:46Yeah.
21:47He shot somebody in the back from a foot away four times.
21:51The detectives leave the room and while they're gone, Charlotte checks her phone and she notices that Lloyd passed away from his gunshot wounds.
21:58Hey.
21:59I'm Detective Johnson.
22:00I haven't spoken with you yet, but I was over there.
22:03I was talking to Trey and he wanted me to tell you to call Chris and Donnie and visit him.
22:11Come visit him.
22:13I just found out that dude died.
22:15I just found out Lloyd...
22:16I don't know if...
22:17It's not...
22:18Did he die?
22:19Yeah, he did.
22:20They couldn't save him.
22:22I just saw it on Facebook that it said 38 minutes ago.
22:26What did it say?
22:27Or what kind of...
22:28What Facebook page?
22:29His mom posted on Lloyd's Facebook.
22:31Oh, really?
22:32Yeah, I guess the doctors couldn't save him.
22:39I just can't believe this.
22:41I can't...
22:42I don't know what to do.
22:44He just killed the one person that understood me.
22:48Yeah, I mean, Trey got his wish.
22:51I don't have any friends, though.
22:53Everybody who knows Lloyd is gonna be like,
22:56You let Lloyd get killed.
22:58Well, it sounds...
22:59That's not really the way yoga people think.
23:02You can keep your underwear in your socks.
23:05Okay.
23:06And just change into this.
23:18You got everything?
23:19Yeah, you got it.
23:20You just have a pocket.
23:21Oh, yeah, that's weird.
23:22I kind of thought there was at least a shirt pocket, but...
23:23That's kind of weird.
23:24That's a kind of discount.
23:39In the end, Winford would be convicted of second-degree murder,
23:43and he was sentenced to life in prison,
23:45with the possibility of parole after 30 years.
23:48No charges were brought against his wife,
23:50even though the police believed that she had lied to them several times during her interview.
23:54What are your thoughts on this case?
23:56What do you think would have happened if it had been his wife catching him with another woman instead?
