00:30It's open right here.
00:31It is not normal.
00:33This is Sarah Evans.
00:35She's just found the body of her good friend Benny King
00:38covered in blood inside his own home.
00:42There's either a side or a side.
00:44There's blood all over the wall.
00:46I might guess the ladder.
00:48The killer, however, was nowhere to be seen
00:50and every witness they had blamed somebody different.
00:54All I know, he was a skinny guy about 6'6", black.
00:57With a young guy, a young white guy.
01:00Did you talk to that bitch down there?
01:03She's been taking all his money.
01:05Weeks later, another murder happened across town
01:08in exactly the same fashion.
01:11They now had a serial killer on their hands
01:14and they had to do everything they could
01:16to figure out who it was and where they were hiding out
01:19before they killed again.
01:23It was me.
01:27It all started on April 8th
01:34when Akron police received this phone call.
01:37Akron 911, what's the location of your emergency?
01:40Oh my God.
01:41What is the problem?
01:43What is the problem?
01:44What is the problem?
01:46What is the problem?
01:47What is the problem?
01:49Ma'am, is he breathing?
01:51No, I don't know.
01:53I'm not at the...
01:54Oh my God.
01:55Immediately, police rushed to the scene.
02:03No, I have to come in here.
02:08Okay.
02:11You want to go hang out over there for us
02:12so you can have room to work here?
02:13Yeah.
02:15Sit.
02:15The ground floor had been ransacked,
02:20but it was the scene upstairs that had terrified Sarah.
02:23Upstairs lay her good friend, 69-year-old Benny King,
02:29and cops would find that he'd been stabbed 33 times.
02:34Oh.
02:35Where's his injuries at?
02:37I don't know.
02:37I have not touched him.
02:39All I did was touch him to see if he was stiff,
02:42but he's stiff and cold.
02:44So we're calling it obvious.
02:46Yeah.
02:47Initially, the cops had no idea
02:54what could have possibly happened to Benny,
02:56but as they explored the house more,
02:58a clear picture would slowly be painted
03:01of exactly what had happened.
03:04His bed was absolutely soaked in blood,
03:07and his walls were covered in it too.
03:10Police presumed that Benny had been attacked in his bedroom
03:13before he crawled into the hallway begging for his life
03:16where the killer finished the job.
03:18The majority of the cuts were to his head,
03:21neck, and upper body,
03:22but there were a few wounds on his hands as well,
03:25indicating that Benny had courageously tried to fight back.
03:29The police don't know this yet,
03:30but in just a few weeks,
03:32this exact scene would be found across town
03:35in an identical murder.
03:36For now, though,
03:38what police found in the kitchen was even more bizarre.
03:42Any idea or nothing?
03:43Can't find anything?
03:44I didn't dig around too much there.
03:45I'm really not going to.
03:47Well, because the lady who called
03:48said that all these cabinets in the kitchen are open,
03:51and she checks on them on the red base,
03:52and she's like,
03:52I don't know why that would be like that.
03:55By someone who's listening here looking for something.
03:58Like, all the cabinets here are open.
04:03I mean, who does this?
04:04Oddly, though,
04:06nothing seemed to have been displaced or stolen.
04:09Something very strange is going on,
04:12so the cops turned to the person
04:13that discovered Benny's body,
04:15Sarah Evans,
04:16who had some crucial information
04:18that would start to spiral this case
04:20into a complex mystery.
04:22Was it the back door that you found open?
04:25No, the front door.
04:26When I come back to 1130,
04:27this door was locked.
04:28Okay.
04:29And when I called you,
04:31when I come back up,
04:31the front door was unlocked.
04:33Okay, so you're actually here this morning
04:34at 1130,
04:36and you spoke to him then?
04:37No, I didn't see him then.
04:38I thought he would lay down
04:39and take a nap from 30.
04:41And then you came back
04:41a little bit after 1,
04:42and that's when you found the door open?
04:44Yeah, it was unlocked.
04:45Okay.
04:46The back door is unlocked, too.
04:47Does he usually keep his doors locked?
04:50Yeah.
04:51123, you go drive, break.
04:52So I said, he locks it.
04:53He goes to take a nap,
04:54but as soon as he gets up in the morning,
04:55he unlocks it.
04:56Was the dog out when you got here?
04:59No, the dog was in his chair.
05:01Okay.
05:01And the chair when I come in the door.
05:03And that's why I knew we were going to see
05:04the stand-up with the dog in the chair with her one.
05:07Detectives then asked Sarah
05:09if she could think of anyone
05:10who had any issues with Benny.
05:12That's when she mentioned two brothers,
05:14Justin and Johnny,
05:16who were often seen visiting Benny.
05:18Sarah also told them
05:19that they had ongoing problems with Benny,
05:22and were sometimes seen fighting with each other.
05:24In fact, their most recent argument
05:27resulted in Benny chasing them off his property
05:30with a shotgun.
05:32Justin also had problems with drugs
05:34and was always on the lookout
05:35for a way to make money fast.
05:37So it's rumored that he'd stolen something of Benny's
05:40and pawned it,
05:42causing all these arguments.
05:43The drug addiction,
05:45history of exploiting Benny,
05:47as well as the gun incident just days prior,
05:49meant that police figured
05:50they finally had their suspects.
05:52But that's when Sarah mentioned
05:54a suspicious vehicle
05:56that had been spotted outside Benny's house
05:58right around the time of his death.
06:01That was up through here.
06:03Earlier today, this morning, I guess.
06:06It sped away.
06:07They come back.
06:09I know it was earlier this morning.
06:11They come back.
06:12It sped away again.
06:13He said it was a younger white guy driving.
06:16Who said that?
06:18A guy.
06:18I can't tell you because he's in trouble.
06:21He got words.
06:21Okay.
06:22Well, what's his warrants for?
06:24I have no idea.
06:25So I'm just giving you the information I was given.
06:28Okay.
06:28This seems like vital information,
06:31but the only guy that saw it
06:32is quite literally on the run from the cops
06:35with outstanding warrants.
06:37So the officer tries to see if he can strike a deal.
06:40Okay.
06:40I'll tell you what.
06:41There's a detective coming.
06:43Okay.
06:44I understand he has some warrants.
06:46if it's possible that we can guarantee
06:49we're not arresting him,
06:50not doing anything.
06:51Do you guys can go ask him
06:52if you want to talk to us then?
06:54Ordinarily, a fugitive would never agree
06:56to a deal like this,
06:57but because Benny was such a nice
06:58and respected guy in the neighborhood,
07:00he comes outside just a few seconds later
07:02to tell the cops everything he knows.
07:06How's it going, guys?
07:07How's it going, brother?
07:08I was out here on my current porch
07:11and I saw this goldish older style
07:13big body Hummer
07:14speed away from over here.
07:17I didn't hear no noises
07:19like gunshots or anything.
07:20How about what time was that?
07:2610.30, 11ish?
07:29I was up here.
07:29Maybe 12?
07:30I came up here.
07:31No.
07:31No, it had to be like...
07:33I was up here at 11.30.
07:34Okay, it had to be about 10.30 or something.
07:36Okay, so between...
07:37Because then I heard her screaming about something
07:39and all this.
07:41and then she discovered that.
07:42I've not seen that vehicle...
07:43You've never seen that car around here or nothing?
07:45Did you happen to see who was driving?
07:47A white male.
07:48Okay.
07:48Blondish, short hair.
07:50Short.
07:50Kind of crew cut like yours.
07:51Okay.
07:52I would say anywhere from his mid-20s to early-30s.
07:56He sped around the corner so fast
07:57his tires were squealing.
07:58Okay.
07:59If the car had shown up around 12 that night,
08:02that's right in between Sarah's two visits
08:04to Benny's house.
08:05The exact window where Benny was murdered.
08:08And with how the car was allegedly driving,
08:11it really does seem as though this Hummer
08:13has something to do with Benny's murder.
08:16They just need to figure out who was inside.
08:19And conveniently,
08:20a neighbor overheard this conversation
08:22and told the police that he knows
08:23a man in the neighborhood
08:24that drives a Hummer
08:25exactly like the one described.
08:28Unfortunately,
08:29he doesn't know the guy's real name.
08:31Only his nickname,
08:33Jay Bird.
08:33You're just assuming Jay Bird
08:36being connected to a Hummer?
08:40Correct.
08:40You don't know?
08:41Right.
08:42I don't have any personal knowledge about that,
08:44but I know that I've seen him many times with.
08:48With the Hummer?
08:49Yeah, Hummer.
08:50What color?
08:51You're up with that color.
08:52It's like a dusty gold.
08:55So you've seen Jay Bird driving this coldest Hummer?
08:59Before, yeah.
09:00It sounded like this Jay Bird was a prime suspect,
09:04but nobody on the scene right now
09:06was able to tell them his real name.
09:08But before they're able to figure it out,
09:10they're confronted with a fourth suspect,
09:13and it was the last person that anyone had expected.
09:16This is Benny's daughter, Patricia,
09:18and as soon as she showed up on the scene,
09:20she seemed to already have her mind made up
09:22about who the killer really was.
09:25This is his daughter here.
09:26Oh, no!
09:28Oh, no!
09:29Oh, no!
09:29He passed away.
09:32But, uh...
09:33Did you talk to a bitch down there?
09:40Let me say this front me.
09:41That lady down there
09:43has been paying his bills,
09:46and she's been taking all his money
09:48and not paying on his bills.
09:50So the gas bill I have not yet paid.
09:53We don't have a bill.
09:54So I don't have a bill to say it
09:56because she's not giving him the bills.
09:57She's keeping them.
09:58She's for...
09:58She is writing on the receipts
10:01what she is supposed to pay
10:02versus what she really paid.
10:06And this has been going on for over three months.
10:08So she's been going on for three months.
10:10He's never had a bill that he never paid in full
10:12until this lady down the street
10:15decided that she was going to help him.
10:16She took on herself to help him.
10:18There we go.
10:19And that's her way to get her drug fixed
10:20is by taking his money.
10:22That's right.
10:23She's talking about Sarah.
10:25Apparently, since she's taken over
10:27paying Benny's bills,
10:28they've all either been late or underpaid.
10:31Patricia is certain
10:33that she's been stealing money
10:34from Benny this way.
10:35And in fact,
10:36she thinks she might have stolen even more, too.
10:39And his money's got to still be in there
10:40because I know exactly where it's at.
10:42Where?
10:43It's in a cabinet
10:44in this kitchen
10:45and a coffee bag.
10:47Let's go.
10:49I'm Tom?
10:50Yeah.
10:50Yeah, the body's not in there no more.
10:53I'll be right back out with you.
10:54I know right now.
10:55Okay.
11:00All right, here.
11:03Can you add I.D.
11:05Do you have any more?
11:06Thank you.
11:08What's your head is coming still?
11:10Oh, my God.
11:13It was in a cardboard container like this.
11:19It's not this, okay.
11:21Was it in there?
11:22No, it was in a container like this.
11:24Are we the Folgers?
11:26Yep.
11:26Where does it keep them?
11:28It was in here.
11:29So, whoever did this
11:31knows exactly where he hid his money.
11:34And she's one
11:35and Johnny,
11:36those are the two that come down here.
11:37Those two are the suspects.
11:39I'm telling you,
11:40there's nobody else.
11:41Them two.
11:43Everything is starting to fall into place.
11:46It now makes sense
11:46why the cabinets were flung open.
11:48Whoever killed Benny
11:49was looking for money.
11:51And that's not even the biggest revelation
11:52the cops are about to have.
11:54Not even close.
11:55Currently,
11:56they have four suspects.
11:58And any one of them
11:59could be their killer.
12:00Each one of these
12:01could take days
12:02to interview and process.
12:03but with every hour that passes,
12:05the killer is getting closer
12:06to finding their next victim.
12:09Luckily,
12:09after talking to another neighbor,
12:11they were given some vital information
12:12that cut down their search
12:14just a little bit
12:15and sent them in the direction
12:16of one man in particular.
12:18They were able to discover
12:20that Justin,
12:21one of the suspected brothers
12:22from earlier,
12:23had a nickname.
12:24Jaybird.
12:25The money,
12:26the gun,
12:27the drugs,
12:28the Hummer,
12:28everything was lining up.
12:30And in the cops' minds,
12:31this could definitely be their killer.
12:33So to ensure
12:34they had all the information possible,
12:36they started interviewing
12:37his brother,
12:38Johnny,
12:38so that when they got around
12:39to Justin,
12:40they'd have no trouble
12:41getting him to confess.
12:43Well,
12:44probably afternoon,
12:45I took my dog over there
12:46so you could see him.
12:48Me and my wife did.
12:49I had her take dog around back.
12:52Then I brought the dog in
12:53for a couple minutes
12:54so he could pet it.
12:54He got pissed off
12:55about something,
12:56so we left.
12:57What, uh,
12:58what did he get pissed off about?
13:00He did.
13:01What did he get pissed off about?
13:01What was he pissed about?
13:02Because that little dog he's got,
13:03he don't like no other dogs,
13:05you know what I mean,
13:06being around his little dog
13:07because he's afraid
13:07the dog's going to get
13:08to eat him.
13:09Uh-huh.
13:09Do you go over
13:10and see him quite often?
13:11Yep, sure do.
13:12Go over and drink a beer
13:13with him just about every day.
13:14Um, so you last saw him
13:16yesterday about 7.30
13:17in the evening?
13:18Yeah, what's this all about?
13:20He's dead.
13:21You gotta be
13:21kidding me, dude.
13:22No, I'm not.
13:24Oh, my God.
13:27I gotta go down there, dude.
13:28The cops figured
13:29this reaction to be genuine
13:30and as they talked to him more,
13:32they became certain
13:33that Johnny didn't know
13:34anything about the crime.
13:36But that doesn't mean
13:37his brother is innocent.
13:38In fact,
13:39what Johnny is about to say
13:40actually makes the cops
13:42even more suspicious.
13:43who's Justin?
13:45Brother.
13:46Okay, would he have seen him
13:47later than you had?
13:48No, he ain't been a lot
13:50around down there.
13:51If somebody said they saw
13:52him down there,
13:53that wouldn't be true?
13:54I don't know.
13:55When I go down there,
13:56my brother ain't there.
13:58Usually,
13:59Johnny and Justin
13:59would go and see Benny
14:00every morning
14:01at around sunset
14:02and that's been the case
14:03for the last three years
14:05since his wife passed away.
14:06Johnny can't think of a reason
14:08for Justin to be down there
14:09so early,
14:10especially not on his own
14:11without telling him.
14:12Johnny was even able
14:13to provide some extra details
14:14about the disagreement
14:15they had recently,
14:16proving to the cops
14:17just how heated
14:18it had gotten between them.
14:20He told them,
14:21look, get the f*** away
14:21from my house,
14:22don't you ever come back again.
14:24He said,
14:24I've loaned you money
14:25four or five times
14:26on this bull****
14:27junk stuff that you bring me.
14:29I'm on a fixed income here.
14:31I can't just keep giving.
14:34He physically pushed him?
14:35Oh yeah.
14:37By this point,
14:38the cops had already heard
14:39all they needed to hear.
14:4119 hours later,
14:42they managed to track down Justin
14:43and would bring him in
14:44for interrogation.
14:46Justin was left
14:47in the interrogation room
14:48for around 45 minutes
14:49before the interrogation began.
14:51This is a tactic used,
14:52among many others,
14:53to make Justin feel
14:54as uncomfortable as possible.
14:59Hey Justin.
15:01You are arrested
15:02for those warrants
15:03we talked about.
15:06You got four warrants on you.
15:09How do you know him?
15:10What is your relationship with him?
15:12You kind of take us through that?
15:15My brother,
15:16he was more than just
15:18like a stepfather.
15:19pretty much.
15:20I'm so sure
15:21the stick ain't given me
15:22a dollar
15:23or a cigarette
15:24or something to eat
15:26or,
15:27you know what I mean?
15:27I lived next door
15:28to him there
15:29for four or five months.
15:31He and I had a warrant
15:32which I went and did my time
15:34and got it all taken care of.
15:36You know what I mean?
15:37If you're asking
15:38did I kill him?
15:39No, I did not.
15:40Seems rather straightforward
15:42from Justin's perspective.
15:43He had exactly the same
15:44nice things to say
15:45about Benny
15:46and doesn't seem stressed out
15:47or anxious about being here.
15:49He's leaning forwards
15:50towards the detective
15:51instead of instinctively
15:52pulling away.
15:53He's maintaining eye contact
15:54when he can
15:54and his tone seems deliberate
15:56and genuine.
15:57Everything about how
15:58he's presenting himself
15:59is relaxed
16:00as though he's just
16:01trying to give the detectives
16:02what they need
16:02and get out of there.
16:04But unfortunately
16:04just saying
16:06you didn't murder someone
16:07isn't enough for the cops
16:08so they decide to confront him
16:10with the evidence
16:10they've gathered
16:11against him.
16:12So we talked
16:14you know
16:14we talked to everybody
16:15in the neighborhood
16:16except for
16:17the one person
16:19that they said
16:20he banned
16:21from the house.
16:22It was me.
16:25Yeah.
16:26Was that over money
16:27or what was that about?
16:29Yeah, it was over money
16:30but
16:31no
16:32I was with my brother
16:33at his house
16:34where I told you
16:35he was drinking beer with.
16:36I had a chase
16:37and said
16:37okay
16:38he told me
16:39he doesn't tell me
16:41he said anything
16:44about a shotgun?
16:45Yeah, he did.
16:46He told my brother
16:48he's like
16:48I should take my shotgun
16:49down there
16:50and pump a couple
16:51of the twids
16:52in his ass
16:53who sent it.
16:54My brother did
16:55he took my back test.
16:58He never had a problem
16:59giving me money
17:00or anything like that.
17:01He pulled it
17:02right out of his pocket.
17:03He was a good guy.
17:05I cared for him
17:07out of the past.
17:08Justin was banned
17:09from the house
17:10and there was
17:11an argument
17:11over money
17:12but it doesn't seem
17:13like he held that
17:14against Benny at all.
17:15But the detectives
17:16find this strange.
17:17All the signs
17:18pointed towards
17:19Justin being the killer
17:20but now he seems
17:21like he had no issues
17:22with Benny at all?
17:24But they've still got
17:24their main piece
17:25of evidence though.
17:26His Hummer
17:26was seen at Benny's house
17:28on the morning
17:29of the murder.
17:30That had to mean
17:31he was lying
17:31this whole time.
17:32Right?
17:33If you watch
17:50any interrogation
17:51where a guilty suspect
17:52is confronted
17:53with a piece
17:53of valid evidence
17:54their reaction
17:55is always very
17:56stiff and short.
17:57They try and deflect
17:58it immediately
17:59by saying no
18:00and explaining
18:01exactly why
18:02that could never
18:02be the case
18:03without showing
18:03a hint of emotion.
18:05Justin is an ex-convict
18:06that works various
18:07handyman jobs
18:08jumping from place
18:09to place.
18:10He doesn't need
18:11to explain
18:11why he doesn't
18:12own a $40,000 SUV.
18:14His facial expression
18:15when he's asked
18:16alongside the way
18:17he laughs and jokes
18:18naturally about the concept
18:19is enough to tell
18:20the detectives
18:20he was telling the truth.
18:22They still didn't want
18:23to discount him
18:24completely as a suspect
18:25but they did figure
18:27that if he wasn't
18:28the killer
18:28then he might at least
18:29be able to help them out.
18:30So they asked
18:31who he thought
18:32might have been responsible
18:33and his answer
18:34was someone
18:34they were very
18:36familiar with.
18:37Sarah.
18:38She knew
18:39she took
18:40a bank card
18:42to the bank
18:43food stamps
18:44that's what my brother
18:45was telling me
18:46on the phone
18:46the other day
18:47and he thinks
18:49that she might have
18:50had something
18:50to do with it.
18:51So if
18:52I had pointed a finger
18:54I'd probably check
18:56her for sure.
18:57Of course
18:58he's talking about
18:59Sarah
18:59and he's accusing her
19:01of exactly the same
19:02thing Patricia did
19:03earlier.
19:04And in fact
19:05John had even mentioned
19:06this in his interview
19:07earlier that day too.
19:09Anybody in that
19:09neighborhood
19:10or anybody have
19:11any problems with him
19:12or give him a rough time?
19:13Yeah, what's called
19:13down the street.
19:14Who's that?
19:15I'm trying to think
19:16of her name.
19:17She lives down
19:18at the end of the road.
19:19She'd go over there
19:20take his money
19:21for bills
19:21to go up
19:22to the corner store
19:22and they're supposed
19:23to pay on all his bills.
19:25People come to find out
19:26she ain't been paying
19:27the full amount
19:28on your bills.
19:29She's been only
19:30paying a half.
19:31And I went over
19:32there one day
19:33he said after all
19:34I've done for that bitch.
19:35Did they reconcile
19:36at all?
19:37No, he uh
19:38he said look
19:39you're a thief
19:40get the out of my house
19:41don't ever ask me
19:42for another
19:43dime.
19:44Quickly
19:44the cops are starting
19:45to realize
19:46that Sarah
19:46wasn't the wonderful
19:47trusted member
19:48of the community
19:49that they'd assumed
19:50she was.
19:51Now three people
19:52have claimed
19:52that she was
19:53exploiting Benny's trust
19:54to steal his money
19:55and all are saying
19:56that she could
19:57be the killer.
19:58To make matters
19:59worse for her
19:59she's also
20:00the only person
20:01left that knew
20:02about his money stash
20:03in the coffee can.
20:04Things are getting
20:05extremely complex
20:06and the cops
20:07have already worked
20:08tirelessly
20:08for days now
20:09and the problem is
20:10the longer
20:11this investigation
20:12goes on for
20:13the longer
20:13the killer
20:14is on the loose
20:15meaning the higher
20:16the chances
20:16that they might
20:17kill again.
20:19So now
20:20six days after
20:21Benny's murder
20:21detectives bring in
20:22Sarah for an interview.
20:23It was imperative
20:24that they either
20:25catch the killer
20:26right now
20:26or get new information
20:27that brings them
20:28straight to them.
20:29If they don't
20:30then they'll have
20:31no suspects
20:32no leads
20:33and a murderer
20:34at large.
20:35We know that
20:37he called 9-1-1
20:39and we got
20:39the recording
20:41so listen to that.
20:43We understand
20:44that you would
20:45pay his bills.
20:48Tell us about that.
20:50Well,
20:51that's where
20:51we had a dispute.
20:53I needed to
20:53pay his bill.
20:54I needed to pay
20:55$40 on it.
20:56I needed to borrow
20:57that.
20:57He said go ahead
20:58and did not
20:58remember I paid
20:59him back
20:59this $40.
21:00That's why
21:00I was still
21:01still around.
21:03That was
21:03you brought there.
21:04in the interview
21:06similarly to Justin
21:07Sarah doesn't
21:08deny the
21:09disagreement
21:09between them
21:10and fully admits
21:11that she took
21:12some money
21:12from him
21:13to pay his bills.
21:14But again
21:14they seem to
21:15make up
21:16and become
21:16friends again.
21:17This time though
21:18the detectives
21:19aren't buying it.
21:21Not when so much
21:22is on the line.
21:23We're hearing
21:24two different sides
21:25of what we're
21:26talking about.
21:27We're hearing
21:27what you're telling us
21:28but we're hearing
21:29from his daughter
21:30and what his
21:32best friend's
21:32telling us.
21:33Now we've been
21:34hearing that
21:34he banned you
21:36from coming
21:36to his house
21:37he didn't want you
21:37handling his bills
21:39or anything like that.
21:40So much that the
21:41owner of the store
21:42called him
21:43and said hey
21:43she's scamming you.
21:46So you're telling us
21:47that that is not true.
21:48That's not true.
21:49That is not true.
21:51I went up there
21:51I didn't go up there
21:52until I had the $40
21:53in my hand to pay them.
21:55Sarah is saying
21:55that all she took
21:56from Benny
21:57was $40
21:57and she even
21:58paid it back.
21:59It'd just been
22:00blown out of proportion
22:00as she wasn't able
22:02to get in contact
22:02with Patricia
22:03and Johnny
22:03to clear her name again.
22:05It's suspicious
22:06but the detectives
22:08aren't going to get
22:08anything more out
22:09of her on this front
22:10so they decide
22:11to ask her
22:11some more
22:12background questions.
22:13Usually these
22:14don't end up
22:14solving the case
22:15but this time
22:16one of their
22:17questions provoked
22:18an answer
22:18that seriously
22:20piqued their interest.
22:22There's a lady
22:22that I was smoking
22:23she had like
22:24salt pepper hair
22:25and long hair
22:26that's not true
22:27let me ask you
22:28is it not your daughter
22:28that she's not with you?
22:29Oh my daughter.
22:30Yeah that's your daughter
22:31she doesn't live there with you?
22:33Do you have any other children?
22:35Yeah.
22:36Does any of them
22:37live with you?
22:37No.
22:38The audio we received
22:40from the police department
22:41is censored here
22:42but Sarah tells the cops
22:43about her other kid
22:44a boy named Jason
22:46a boy who had just
22:47gotten out of prison.
22:49Whatever.
22:51He's got out of prison
22:51his left side.
22:53When did he get out of prison?
22:54Yes that number.
22:55What was he in jail for?
22:58Um
22:58The robbery.
23:01Would your son be capable
23:02of going to die?
23:03Oh god I pray not.
23:05No.
23:06I would pray not.
23:08According to the detectives
23:10when they asked this question
23:11Sarah tensed up
23:13and seemed extremely
23:14closed off.
23:16She inhales sharply
23:17and her whole body
23:18jumps when they bring up
23:19this possibility.
23:21As far as the detectives
23:22are concerned
23:22whether intentionally
23:24or not
23:24she just told them
23:26there is a possibility.
23:28That's all they're able
23:29to focus on
23:30and it all makes sense too.
23:32She knew about
23:33the coffee can
23:33full of money
23:34so what if she'd
23:35accidentally mentioned
23:36that to Jason?
23:37He'd just gotten out
23:38of prison for robbery
23:39and it'd make complete sense
23:41if he saw Benny
23:42as an easy target
23:43and decided to try
23:43and steal his cash.
23:45That could even explain
23:46the Hummer too.
23:47It was a nice car
23:48that Jason might have jacked
23:49and used to get in
23:51and out of the scene quickly.
23:52Instantly
23:53the hunt for Jason began
23:54but no matter
23:56how hard they tried
23:57they just couldn't
23:58track him down.
23:59But that's
24:00when some new information
24:01came to light.
24:02Information
24:03that would change
24:05everything.
24:07An inmate of the prison
24:08Jason was staying at
24:09had contacted police
24:11after hearing about
24:11the crime
24:12claiming that he knew
24:13who the perpetrator was
24:15and promised to reveal
24:16it to them
24:17in an interview.
24:18So I'm told
24:20you told one of the deputies
24:21you got some information
24:23about a homicide?
24:25I was about the old guy
24:26that got stabbed.
24:27Uh-huh.
24:27Yeah, his mother found the body
24:29and then I heard him
24:31and his mom arguing
24:32over the phone
24:32about
24:33it wasn't supposed
24:35to go that far.
24:36The inmate said
24:49he'd heard Jason and Sarah
24:50talking about the murder
24:51on the phone
24:52after Jason thought
24:53he'd hung up.
24:54The cops now
24:55had no doubt
24:56in their minds
24:57who their new
24:58number one suspect was
24:59and by this point
25:00in the investigation
25:01it's likely
25:02Jason's cash
25:03was starting to run out.
25:05They had to find
25:05him as soon as possible
25:07before he got the chance
25:08to kill again.
25:10But
25:10unfortunately
25:11they were already
25:13too late.
25:17Akron Police and Fire
25:18Canty.
25:19Hi.
25:20My name's George Bayless.
25:22I'm down in Florida now
25:23but my father's still up
25:24in Akron.
25:26We haven't been able
25:27to get a hold of him
25:28and some of his neighbors
25:29got a hold of me today too
25:30and said they haven't seen him
25:31since Saturday.
25:33They said there were
25:34some people over there
25:35they didn't really recognize.
25:37Alright, so we have it
25:38and we're going to get
25:39someone over there
25:39to check it out
25:40and then we can give you
25:41a follow-up call.
25:43Police quickly initiated
25:44a welfare check
25:45on George's father
25:46Gary Ballas.
25:48When they arrived
25:48they knocked on the front door
25:50and after receiving
25:51no response
25:52the officers forced entry
25:53through a side door.
26:00Gary!
26:01On Thursday, May 21st
26:17Gary Ballas
26:18was found dead.
26:20It was obvious
26:21he'd been dead
26:21for a few days
26:22and given the abundance
26:23of stab wounds
26:24it was ruled
26:26a homicide.
26:27An investigation
26:28would turn up
26:29very little information
26:30except for the fact
26:31that Gary's car
26:32was missing
26:33from the driveway.
26:34So next
26:35they started to talk
26:36to his neighbors
26:37to see if they knew
26:38anything about
26:38what had happened.
26:39Acker Police
26:48I just wonder
26:50if I could talk to you
26:50a couple seconds
26:51about your neighbor
26:51behind you.
26:52When's the last time
26:53you saw him?
26:56A police go.
26:57Was anybody there
26:58with him?
27:00He came over here
27:01and knocked on the door.
27:02What did he say?
27:03He came over
27:04to pick flowers
27:05out of your heart.
27:05Purple ones?
27:06By lilacs.
27:07Did he have anybody
27:08with him when he was there?
27:09He came over here
27:10with himself.
27:11Did he have the car
27:12there Tuesday?
27:13I don't remember.
27:14I was over here.
27:16Right.
27:16Do you know
27:17what kind of car it is?
27:19Blue station wagon.
27:20Like a Subaru?
27:21Yeah.
27:22Anybody else
27:23live here
27:23that might have seen him?
27:26Just my kids
27:27live here with me.
27:29Have you seen
27:29your neighbor lately?
27:30Gary?
27:31Yeah.
27:32No.
27:32Last time I saw him
27:34it was like
27:34340.
27:36The car was there
27:37when she took
27:37the flowers over
27:38or do you remember?
27:38The car hasn't been
27:39there for over a week.
27:40A week?
27:41You want to step
27:41out here for one second?
27:45So Gary
27:46is deceased.
27:50It's looking suspicious
27:51that's why I'm asking
27:52you these questions.
27:53He hasn't mentioned
27:53anybody.
27:54You haven't seen
27:54anybody.
27:55You haven't heard
27:55any fighting.
27:56All right.
27:58Obviously then
27:58somebody has come
28:00here before.
28:01It's a little odd
28:02for Gary's car
28:03not to have been
28:03at his place
28:04for over a week
28:05especially given
28:06Gary was still home.
28:07There's a chance
28:08that this family
28:09could be misremembering
28:10but the cops
28:11got exactly
28:12the same information
28:13from each
28:13of the other neighbors.
28:18Hi sir.
28:19Hi.
28:19Sorry to bother you.
28:20No bother.
28:21Okay.
28:22Um,
28:22are you familiar
28:23with the older gentleman
28:24that lives at the
28:25blue house
28:25across the street?
28:26Yeah,
28:27that's Gary.
28:27Gary?
28:28Yeah,
28:28that's our
28:28What's um?
28:36He's a,
28:36our neighbor.
28:37She used to
28:38help him out.
28:39She used to
28:40babysit his wife.
28:42When's the last
28:42time you seen
28:43Gary?
28:44Uh,
28:45a couple days.
28:47A couple days?
28:47Yeah.
28:48He was out
28:48cutting his grass.
28:50Do you remember
28:50what day that was?
28:51Um,
28:52that was what?
28:53Thursday.
28:53Yeah,
28:54Tuesday.
28:54Thursday.
28:55Monday.
28:56Monday?
28:57Yeah.
28:57He's always
28:58out cutting his
28:58grass.
28:58Is he?
28:59He frequents
29:00cutting his
29:00grass?
29:01What,
29:01is I married
29:02Gary?
29:03Um,
29:03we're investigating
29:04an incident
29:04that occurred
29:05over there.
29:06Oh,
29:06okay.
29:07The only
29:08issue was,
29:09not a single
29:10one of the
29:10neighbors could
29:11tell the cops
29:11who might be
29:12driving that
29:13car.
29:13Gary did
29:14have visitors
29:15over somewhat
29:15frequently,
29:16but they never
29:17used his car.
29:18If the cops
29:18could figure out
29:19where the vehicle
29:20was and who
29:21took it,
29:21it seems like
29:22they'd have a
29:23pretty sure
29:23shot at
29:24finding the
29:24murderer.
29:25And that's
29:25when they
29:25talked to
29:26this couple,
29:27who claimed
29:27they've seen
29:28a new guy
29:28around his
29:29house
29:29recently.
29:34Excuse me,
29:35has anybody
29:35been over
29:36to talk to
29:36you guys yet?
29:37No.
29:38Okay.
29:39You know,
29:39I called the police
29:41out here yesterday
29:42and they didn't even
29:42learn who were in there.
29:44I don't have my last name.
29:44What did you call him
29:45yesterday for?
29:46Because I haven't seen
29:48him since Saturday
29:49and it's not like him
29:50to leave town
29:51and not tell him to come.
29:52You haven't seen him
29:52since Saturday?
29:53No, I didn't
29:53ever answer that door.
29:55Did you say you guys
29:55are positive though?
29:57It was Saturday, huh?
29:58He was cutting his grass?
29:59Yeah.
30:00Have you seen the guy
30:00with the cane before?
30:02No.
30:03No, never seen him before.
30:04Was he white or black?
30:06Right.
30:07Give me the address.
30:08You said he was younger?
30:09Yeah.
30:09His car wasn't there?
30:11No.
30:11His car hasn't been there
30:12since Sunday.
30:14Okay.
30:15But soon,
30:15the cops were able
30:16to put together
30:17exactly what had happened.
30:19It turns out,
30:20Gary was never
30:21in that car
30:22with the other man.
30:23When his car
30:24pulled out of his driveway
30:25for the last time,
30:26Gary was already dead.
30:29But at least
30:30they had a description
30:31of who they thought
30:31the murderer was.
30:33And even better,
30:34just a short time after,
30:36the cops received word
30:37that his car
30:38had been seen
30:38at a gas station
30:39on a surveillance camera.
30:41Unfortunately,
30:42the camera quality
30:42was too poor
30:43to properly make out
30:44his identity.
30:45But at least
30:46the cops now know
30:47without a shadow
30:48of a doubt
30:48that if they find
30:49that car,
30:50they can find
30:51the man
30:51that killed Gary.
30:53But it turns out
30:54someone had already
30:55done that for them.
30:57An unnamed witness
30:58came forward
30:59and told them
31:00that he'd seen
31:01that very car
31:02and knew precisely
31:03who it now belonged to.
31:06Jason K.
31:07came over
31:07Sunday morning
31:09and he was going
31:09to help me
31:10work on the house
31:11I'm working on.
31:12Did you know
31:12Jason's last name?
31:13Shagley or
31:14I don't even know
31:15how to pronounce it,
31:16something like that.
31:16Anyway,
31:17he came over
31:18but I had to go
31:19to Harbor Freight
31:20because I needed
31:20a grinder.
31:21And so I told him,
31:22I said,
31:23I got to go
31:23to Harbor Freight.
31:24He said,
31:24oh, I'll take you.
31:25And I said,
31:25wait a minute, Jason.
31:26I said,
31:26I'm not getting
31:27in no hot car.
31:28I said,
31:28is that car hot?
31:29He said,
31:30no, the car is not hot.
31:31Uncle Willie,
31:31no, I wouldn't do you
31:32like that.
31:32The car this man
31:34is talking about
31:35is Gary's Subaru.
31:37But more importantly,
31:39he just mentioned
31:39the name of the man
31:40they believe killed Benny,
31:42Jason Shockley.
31:44This was a shocking
31:46breakthrough in both cases.
31:47Not only have they
31:48essentially just
31:49solved Gary's murder,
31:51but now they're
31:52hot on Jason's tail
31:53and have more evidence
31:54than ever
31:54to try and track him down.
31:56Back on the scene,
31:57they'd also noticed
31:58that Gary's credit cards
31:59had been stolen.
32:00And this guy's story
32:01even lines up perfectly
32:02with that, too.
32:03He said,
32:04my friend let me use it.
32:05He went to Florida.
32:06He gave me a credit card,
32:08told me to keep gas in it
32:09and I can buy cigarettes
32:11and buy me something
32:12to eat if I need it.
32:13I was kind of like
32:14not believing it,
32:15but he said,
32:15no, I swear.
32:17It almost seemed
32:17too good to be true.
32:19So the detectives
32:20asked the witnesses
32:20to pick Jason
32:21out of a photo lineup
32:22and he pointed
32:23straight at him instantly.
32:26Jason was now
32:27the suspect
32:27of a double homicide.
32:29And two city-wide
32:30investigations
32:31had converged
32:32into one.
32:34Every single officer
32:35and detective
32:36in the area
32:36knew they couldn't
32:37let Jason take another life,
32:39so they had to act fast
32:40and hunt him down.
32:42That's when police
32:42received one
32:43final phone call,
32:45this time
32:46from Sarah Evans,
32:48Jason's mother.
32:50On that call,
32:51knowing how dangerous
32:52he could be,
32:52she decided
32:53to give up
32:54her own son
32:55and told the police
32:56the address
32:57of his safe house.
32:58to the police.
32:59I don't know.
33:00I don't know.
33:00Let's do the last one.
33:02Oh.
33:02It's just the big one.
33:03This one?
33:04Which house is it?
33:05It's the second one.
33:05The one on the right.
33:071887.
33:08Is there a way
33:08to go back?
33:09Hello.
33:13Part one.
33:17Go ahead.
33:19Jump.
33:19Jump.
33:19The house
33:38was abandoned,
33:39boarded up,
33:40and dirty.
33:40It was unclear
33:42if anyone was even inside,
33:44but the cops
33:44have to be
33:45extremely vigilant
33:46as they know
33:47Jason could be armed.
33:48After clearing
33:49the first floor,
33:50they moved upstairs
33:51as a group
33:52and tried
33:52to figure out
33:53where Jason
33:54was hiding.
33:55You want to hold
33:56in the basement
33:56here or what?
33:57No.
34:19only one door
34:28on this floor
34:29was fully closed
34:30and every other room
34:32was empty.
34:33This is where
34:33they think
34:34Jason is.
34:35Problem is,
34:36they've already made
34:37a lot of noise,
34:39so whoever's
34:39on the other side
34:40of that door
34:41could be prepared.
34:42That's why
34:43they decide
34:44to storm in.
34:47Hands,
34:48motherfuckers!
34:48Hands!
34:49Hands,
34:50motherfuckers!
34:51Hands!
34:52Don't move.
34:53Roll over
34:53and put them
34:54on the top of your head.
34:55Roll on your stomach,
34:56hands,
34:57and behind your back.
34:57Let's go!
34:58Let's go.
34:59Hurry up,
35:00Jason.
35:08Get nice.
35:09You got shoes, bud?
35:36Where are your shoes at?
35:39underneath the back
35:40the right there.
35:41You want to pat them?
35:42Shake them?
35:43Yeah.
35:45Let's go.
35:45I need to check this
35:47up, guys.
35:52I'm clear for everything
35:53you've got a
35:54individual order.
35:54How old are you now,
35:55man?
35:5630.
35:57Three of you as a kid
35:58over there, man,
35:59on the Johnson block,
35:59man.
36:00Yeah.
36:04Is this nailed shut
36:05or can you get this
36:05open, Jason?
36:06I just hit it.
36:07No.
36:08That would be good.
36:08I always
36:09call it
36:10two.
36:11Two by four
36:12dollars off the
36:12bottom.
36:13Are you out there?
36:15Yeah, I'm right here.
36:15Here, here he comes.
36:16All right.
36:19Did you notice anybody
36:20had anybody else?
36:22Watch your head.
36:24I don't think so.
36:26I don't think they even
36:26know.
36:27Yeah, we need to get
36:28him.
36:28Hold on, man.
36:33Just as they'd hoped,
36:46Jason was found lying
36:48amongst rubble and trash
36:49on the second floor,
36:51attempting to hide away
36:52from the very people
36:53who just put him in cuffs.
36:55Thankfully, he put up
36:56no resistance,
36:57and a quick sweep of the house
36:59confirmed he was the only
37:00person here.
37:01Amongst the trash on the floor,
37:03the officers found multiple
37:04knives and a credit card
37:06belonging to Gary Ballas.
37:08After six weeks of
37:09investigations,
37:11they'd finally caught him.
37:13He was then taken out of the house
37:14and into the back of a patrol car.
37:16But there was still
37:17one problem with all of this.
37:20They still had no evidence
37:21that he was the one
37:22who killed Benny
37:23all those weeks ago.
37:24Sure, the connection is strange
37:26and multiple people
37:27have accused him,
37:28but there's nothing solid.
37:30That's what the cops
37:31wanted to change
37:32in the interrogation room
37:33and bring peace
37:34to Benny's family
37:35almost two months
37:37after his death.
37:40Remember,
37:41Jason is likely not aware
37:43of exactly how much
37:44the cops know.
37:45All he knows
37:46is that he was arrested
37:48and now the cops
37:49are interrogating him.
37:50He might even think
37:51that they don't know
37:51about the murders
37:52and that he could get
37:54away with everything.
37:55How do you know
37:56Gary Bayless?
37:58I knew the bad Gary.
38:00Like I said,
38:01my cousin lives next door,
38:02but my mom used to go over
38:03and help him out a lot.
38:05He gets to telling me
38:07about how he hates
38:08Donald Trump
38:09and everything.
38:10Yeah, he's a bird.
38:11He's a martyr.
38:14Man.
38:15Yeah.
38:16He's out there.
38:17He's a trip.
38:18Yeah.
38:19I asked him,
38:20you know,
38:21if there'd be a possibility
38:22if he could leave me
38:23his car,
38:24so I'd like to
38:24to work and stuff.
38:26Okay.
38:27You know,
38:27if he wanted it
38:28for a second,
38:29you know what I mean?
38:30He doesn't like
38:31people using his car
38:32and stuff.
38:33Right.
38:33He's like,
38:35I'm a big guy.
38:36He's like,
38:37I want to see you,
38:38I want to see you succeed.
38:39He's like,
38:40I want to see you do like,
38:42you know,
38:43I just got out of prison.
38:44So how long
38:45have you had a car for?
38:47I had,
38:48I've had his car
38:49for a few days.
38:50How long have you been
38:51done him for?
38:51I've known Gary
38:53for almost
38:55nine years.
38:56Oh,
38:57wow.
38:57So you've seen
38:57a long relationship.
38:59I've stayed a night
39:00or two at his house
39:01before.
39:01So you've been in
39:01the house before?
39:02Oh,
39:03yeah.
39:03Yeah.
39:05Everything up until
39:06this point
39:06is mostly
39:07the truth.
39:09He did know Gary
39:09and he had spent
39:10some time with him
39:11recently.
39:12But remember,
39:13he was found
39:14with Gary's
39:15stolen credit cards
39:16in his stolen car
39:18just days after
39:19he was murdered.
39:20This is shaping up
39:21to be a textbook
39:22interrogation
39:23where the detectives
39:24will have to catch him
39:24out in various lies
39:26in order to extract
39:27the truth.
39:28And they're about
39:28to start that process
39:30immediately.
39:31Jason,
39:32tell me what happened,
39:33man.
39:33Um,
39:34what do you mean
39:35tell you what happened?
39:37I have people
39:37that are in the area
39:39that see you
39:41and him together.
39:42He's been deceased
39:43since about the same
39:45time you see him.
39:46You've got his card
39:47and his credit cards.
39:48You've tried it?
39:49He's claiming
40:12that Gary had lent
40:13him his car
40:14for work
40:14and had used
40:15the credit cards
40:16he'd left in his car
40:17to just buy
40:17a few cigarettes.
40:19But clearly
40:19the cops
40:20don't believe him.
40:21In fact,
40:22this entire
40:23questioning segment
40:24about Gary
40:24is more of a formality.
40:26They have much
40:27more evidence
40:27about this crime
40:28than they do
40:29Benny's.
40:30So their plan
40:31is to try
40:31and have him
40:31confess to
40:32Gary's murder
40:33so that confessing
40:34to Benny's
40:35doesn't seem
40:35like such a big deal.
40:37It seems like
40:37a clever strategy,
40:38but it won't work
40:39if Jason simply
40:40refuses
40:41to admit to anything.
40:42wouldn't you agree
40:44to us
40:44or agree with us
40:46that it's kind of weird
40:47that you're the last person
40:49that's been seen with him?
40:50Yes.
40:51I find that weird.
40:52I see what you guys
40:54stand with.
40:55But at the same time,
40:57I'm not no
40:57f***er.
40:58I do it.
40:59That's not
41:00s***er.
41:01I do, man.
41:02Well, sometimes people
41:03don't go in
41:04and sometimes people
41:04get in an argument
41:05with people
41:06who are.
41:07No, no, no.
41:07Anybody that knows me
41:09will tell me
41:09that's not what I do.
41:11So what I smoke
41:12is a crack.
41:14I'm a smoker
41:14because I was
41:1510 years old.
41:16But you know
41:18when I do
41:18some stupid s***
41:19like that
41:20at home?
41:23If you were a jury
41:24and you heard
41:25your story
41:27about a man
41:28who loaned you
41:30his car,
41:31who has been
41:32known
41:33not to loan
41:35his car
41:35to anybody,
41:36his family says,
41:38his neighbor says so,
41:40because if you
41:40don't help yourself,
41:42this could end up
41:44really bad
41:46for you.
41:47When confronted
41:48with the cold hard facts,
41:50something changes
41:51about Jason.
41:52He loses his confidence,
41:53he's fidgeting
41:54with his hands
41:55to try and distract himself,
41:56he avoids making eye contact
41:58with the detective
41:58however he can,
41:59whether it be looking
42:00down at the table,
42:01up at the ceiling,
42:02or even at the wall
42:03next to him.
42:04He almost looks
42:05ashamed.
42:06And that's no illusion.
42:07Pay close attention
42:08to what he does next
42:09as it marks
42:10the beginning
42:11of a startling confession.
42:13And even if you
42:15did wrong
42:16and the judge
42:18and you admit
42:19to what happened
42:20and everything else,
42:21the judge takes that
42:22into consideration
42:22because it shows
42:24remorse.
42:24you want me
42:28to turn it off?
42:30No.
42:33Stop.
42:35Erase the first.
42:36I'm not erasing anything.
42:37Erase the first one.
42:39I'm not erasing anything.
42:41No evidence.
42:42I can't do both.
42:43Erase the first one.
42:45and I'll tell you
42:47what you're saying.
42:49Okay.
42:50It's completely off.
42:52Jason thinks
42:53that that audio recorder
42:54is the only thing
42:55recording what he's
42:56saying right now.
42:57Somehow he doesn't
42:58realize the camera
42:59in the corner
43:00also has a microphone
43:01built in.
43:02So now that the audio
43:04recorder is off,
43:05he thinks he's free
43:06to say whatever he wants.
43:08He's over there
43:09drinking all of my stuff.
43:12Just talking bullshit.
43:13I guess my mom
43:14bought him $20
43:16from when he was
43:17telling you
43:17to buy all of his stuff
43:18and then you have to be
43:19in, you know,
43:21you know,
43:21put this on
43:22a very contemptible.
43:23Okay.
43:24I'm all in.
43:26You get to be
43:27talking real crazy
43:29about that.
43:31I asked him
43:31like,
43:32please stop.
43:34So,
43:35I'm like,
43:36you know what,
43:36I gotta go.
43:38I get up
43:38and leave
43:39and
43:41the phone
43:42is cut back
43:43and
43:44then I whined
43:46and then he threw
43:47it and I
43:47picked up his knife
43:49and pushed him down
43:51and he dropped
43:51the knife
43:51and I picked
43:52the knife
43:52back into his chair.
43:58He said,
43:58I'll shoot you.
44:01And when he went
44:01to reach,
44:02I said,
44:05I don't know.
44:05I don't know.
44:08You can be so scared.
44:10It was a textbook
44:12confession
44:13and the cops
44:14did an incredible job
44:15at helping him
44:16through it
44:16and making him
44:17feel comfortable.
44:18The thing is,
44:19they know this
44:20still isn't
44:21the whole truth,
44:23but it's all
44:23they need for now.
44:24They could disprove
44:25his self-defense story
44:26later in court.
44:27What matters
44:28is that he admitted
44:29to it in some respect.
44:31Now they can switch
44:32gears to
44:32Benny's murder,
44:33but he's not going
44:34to make that one
44:35as easy.
45:00Despite just being
45:01finessed into
45:02admitting to murder,
45:04Jason suddenly
45:04thinks he's
45:05the smartest
45:05person in the room.
45:06The cases are
45:07almost an exact
45:08mirror of each other,
45:09but Jason thinks
45:10he can escape
45:11liability for
45:12at least one of them.
45:13But he's dead wrong.
45:14See, here's another thing.
45:16You just told us
45:17that you went
45:17through Gary's pants.
45:19You went through
45:19Benny's pants too.
45:20Because you know
45:21because Benny
45:22was known to carry
45:23$700 in his pants pocket.
45:26That I didn't know.
45:27Everybody.
45:28No, I didn't.
45:29Everybody know.
45:30I did it.
45:31Benny never
45:32pulled money out
45:33in front of me.
45:33I didn't say that.
45:34Most moms
45:35are like,
45:36there's no way
45:37my kid would do it.
45:38No, she knows
45:40for a fact that I didn't
45:40do that.
45:41I'm not saying
45:42about Benny.
45:43I'm just saying
45:43your mom's
45:45sitting here
45:46thinking,
45:48if it's impossible,
45:49if it's impossible,
45:50what we talked to
45:51your mom.
45:51What she did.
45:52She's did.
45:53Yeah, we talked to her.
45:55She's freaking out.
45:56and as far as me
45:58asking her
45:58if I thought
45:59you did it,
46:00it was now
46:01hell no.
46:02It was,
46:03oh my God,
46:04I hope not.
46:05Jason,
46:06do you see what you're hearing?
46:07Listen to me, okay?
46:09I done told you about
46:10being here,
46:11bro.
46:12But this shit
46:12about Benny
46:13was not me.
46:15And despite
46:16all the pressure
46:17the cops put on him,
46:18this is the story
46:19he stuck to.
46:20It seemed he thought
46:21he could maybe
46:22convince a jury
46:23of one's
46:24self-defense charge
46:25but two
46:25was simply
46:26too suspicious.
46:28But that didn't matter
46:29as the cops figured
46:30they still knew
46:31exactly what happened.
46:32Jason knew Benny
46:33through his mother
46:34and had heard
46:34about the coffee can
46:35of cash.
46:36He broke in
46:37one morning
46:37in an attempt
46:38to steal the cash
46:39accidentally waking
46:40Benny in the process.
46:41They started fighting
46:42and Jason fearing
46:43he'd called the police
46:44stabbed him
46:45multiple times.
46:46Eventually,
46:47Benny crawled out
46:48to the hallway
46:48where he bled out.
46:50They also started
46:51to discount
46:52his story
46:52about Gary's murder.
46:54They believed
46:54that it wasn't
46:55any form of self-defense
46:56and in reality
46:57it was simply
46:58a disagreement.
47:00Jason had gotten
47:00irrationally angry
47:02after Gary refused
47:03to let him use his car.
47:04In his rage,
47:05he shoved him
47:06to the ground
47:06and killed him
47:07in the same manner
47:08before stealing
47:09his credit cards
47:10and leaving
47:11in his car.
47:12These are the theories
47:14that the prosecution
47:15presented to the jury
47:16and,
47:17as expected,
47:18they believed them.
47:20Only one person
47:21was charged
47:21in the murders
47:22of Benny King
47:23and Gary Ballas.
47:25Justin,
47:26Johnny,
47:26and Sarah
47:26were all ruled innocent.
47:29But Jason
47:29wasn't so lucky.
47:31In 2022,
47:33he was convicted
47:33of both of the murders
47:34and sentenced
47:35to life in prison.
