The molten salt has a much higher boiling point than water, which allows the reactor to operate at a low pressure. This feature is revolutionary because it eliminates the need for massive and expensive containment structures, significantly cutting the costs of nuclear energy.
01:35In fact, Cairo's power S, first Hermes, demonstration reactor has already received a construction permit from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a non-water-cooled reactor for the first time in over 50 years.
01:49The project's location in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, holds historical significance. Once the top secret headquarters of the Manhattan Project during World War II, it has now transformed into a hub for cutting-edge nuclear energy research and projects.
