Half of the Mediterranean's cartilaginous fish are in danger. The Blue Shark has reached the "Critically Endangered" category. Why is fishing still unregulated? The urgency of the marine ecosystem cannot wait.
The key lies in the juveniles: Scientists discover that the Blue Shark population in the Mediterranean is dominated by immature specimens. Without adults, there is no future. We need real action and regulation. #MarineLife #Conservation #Chondrichthyes

00:00The Blue Shadow of the Mediterranean. A scenario of extinction.
00:05Welcome to a report that takes us deep into the heart of an urgent ecological crisis.
00:11Today, we focus our attention on one of the ocean's most graceful inhabitants,
00:16the blue shark prionus Glauca.
00:19Although globally categorized as near-threatened,
00:22its fate in the Mediterranean Sea has taken a dramatic turn.
00:26Reaching the status of critically endangered in the area between the Gulf of Lyon and Malta.
00:33The heart of the crisis.
00:34The blue shark, easily recognizable by its brilliant blue color and long pectoral fins,
00:41faces a dual threat.
00:43First, those fins are highly sought after in the shark fin trade.
00:48Second, fishing for this species in the Mediterranean is currently unregulated.
00:52The situation for Chandritchians, or Keralaginous fishes, is dire in this basin,
00:58which harbors the highest percentage of threatened species in the world,
01:02an alarming 53%.
01:04A population on the edge to understand the magnitude of the problem.
01:10Scientists and recreational fishermen turned citizen scientists,
01:14joined forces to collect genetic data in the Gulf of Lyon and the Ligurian Sea.
01:19The result of this study has sounded the alarm.
01:23The vast majority of the sharks observed were juveniles.
01:27Specimens between 1.2 and 2 meters were recorded,
01:31equivalent to sharks approximately 2 to 5 years old.
01:35This data is crucial and worrying.
01:38It means the observed sharks are too young or are just reaching the age of sexual maturity.
01:43This raises two disturbing conclusions.
01:47Either the reproductive populations are minimal, right,
01:50or they are maturing at smaller sizes,
01:53possibly due to the limited space or food scarcity in the Mediterranean.
01:58Understanding this juvenile dynamic is the key to the species' survival in these waters.
02:03In sufficient efforts, the blue shark crisis has crossed borders.
02:07In November 2022, the species was included in Sites Appendix 2 to regulate its trade.
02:14A year later, the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas, ICCAT,
02:21agreed to a 23% reduction in catch quotas in the North Atlantic.
02:26However, in the Mediterranean and beyond, a crucial battle remains lost.
02:31The obligation to land sharks with their fins naturally attached to vital measure
02:36against illegal trade remains unresolved after more than 15 years of debate.
02:43The story of the blue shark in the Mediterranean is a stark reminder
02:46that, despite international progress,
02:50much work still needs to be done to protect this vital and vulnerable traveler
02:54before its blue shadow disappears forever from our waters.
