00:00Hello and welcome to Manchester World. My name is Theo Hewson-Bett and for many in the city this is a great week but for those aged around 16 it's probably been one of stress and worry and that's because this week brings GCSE results day. Now we know that that can cause a lot of panic so here's everything you need to know before you open your results this Thursday. Now we're going to start with actually getting your results. This Thursday morning a sealed envelope will be waiting for you at your school and it's going to contain your grades and the results of your work over the last two years.
00:28Most schools open up at 8am for students who are keen to get their results early and there will almost certainly be staff on hand for those who need advice or instruction. It's completely up to you whether you find somewhere private to open your envelope or whether you want to crack it open with some friends. It's also worth noting that some students in Greater Manchester are part of a trial for an app called Education Reward which will reveal your results digitally at 11am. This is sort of a little test area before it's rolled out to the rest of the country.
00:53As for the grades mean they're ranked on a scale of 9 to 1 with 1 being the worst, 9 being the best. A 4 is a passing grade and is comparable to a low C by the old results system while a 7 is an A.
01:04Now many students will be wanting their grades to get them into their preferred sixth form or college and there is an appeals process if you've narrowly missed out on a certain grade or if you think there's been a mistake.
01:13Now simply talk to your teachers on hand to figure out the next steps if you think that applies to you. English language and maths are both required subjects at GCSE level and if you've failed those exams you'll be having to look to continue studying them until you pass a re-sit.
01:27This isn't the end of the world but is worth being aware of. Now just remember these grades only serve to get you to college. They're not vital for uni applications nor future jobs so don't be too crushed if you've not got exactly what you wanted. I promise it will be fine.
01:39But that's all for now. Thank you very much for watching. Follow Manchester World for more and best of luck for those getting their results this week.
