00:00Five teenage girls have been charged in the Children's Court in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

00:05with verbally abusing Form 1 student Zahra Karina Mahathir, who died last month.

00:10They were charged before Judge Elsie Primus in closed-door proceedings, Pernama reported.

00:17The five, whose identities are being withheld as they are below 18,

00:21were charged with uttering abusive words against the victim, which could have caused her distress.

00:26They were accused of committing the offence at Block A36 of SMK Agama Tundatu Mustafa in Limawan Papar

00:34at around 10pm to 11pm on July 15.

00:38They were charged under Section 507c subsection 1 of the Penal Code, which covers harassment and

00:45provides for up to a year in jail, a fine or both upon conviction. Zahra was found unconscious at

00:514am on July 16, after allegedly falling from the third floor of her school's hostel.

00:57She died at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu the following day.
