India, China Discuss Border, Security And Trade; Wang Yi, PM Modi Meet In Focus | Spotlight | N18G

India-China ties: Chinese top diplomat Wang Yi is in New Delhi for three days of high-level talks, to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, after discussions with National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, and External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar. Doval highlighted that borders have remained quiet and ties are on an upward trend since last year’s Modi-Xi meeting. Jaishankar underlined that stability along the Line of Actual Control is essential and stressed "mutual respect, mutual sensitivity, and mutual interest." Wang Yi, meanwhile, pointed to the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage as a trust-building step. With ties shaken after the deadly Galwan clashes in 2020, Wang’s India visit comes just ahead of PM Modi’s China trip for the SCO Summit.

00:00India and China, two of the world's most populous countries, appear to be turning a page in their troubled relationship.
00:08Our Chinese top diplomat Wang Yi is set to meet with India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi as a part of his three-day visit to India.
00:17This key meeting comes just days ahead of Prime Minister Modi's visit to China for a summit meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
00:27Earlier today, the Chinese foreign minister also met with India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.
00:35And during the meeting, Ajit Doval said that there has been an upward trend in India-China ties.
00:42Borders have been quiet and there has been peace and tranquility.
00:47The Indian NSA added that the last year's meeting between Prime Minister Modi and China's Xi Jinping
00:54helped the two nations to set a new trend and that both New Delhi and Beijing have profited a lot since then.
01:04The Wang Yi Doval talks come as a part of the 24th round of negotiations on India-China border issues.
01:12There has been an upward trend.
01:18Borders have been quiet.
01:20There have been peace and tranquility.
01:22Our bilateral engagements have been more substantial.
01:26And we are most grateful to our leaders who, in Kazan, in October last, were able to set a new trend.
01:35And we have profited a lot since then.
01:41The new environment that has been created has helped us in moving ahead in the various areas that we were working on.
01:50The Chinese top diplomat's first big meet in New Delhi was with India's External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. J. Shankar.
01:58The two spoke of moving beyond the difficult years after the 2020 Galwan border clash.
02:05J. Shankar made it clear that stability along the line of actual control remains the foundation for any positive momentum.
02:13J. Shankar said both sides must embrace what he called the three mutuals, mutual respect, mutual sensitivity, and mutual interest, to prevent differences from becoming disputes.
02:29For his part, sitting across from J. Shankar, Wang Yi noted the resumption of Kailash Mansurova pilgrimage in Tibet is a step toward building confidence with India.
02:41Having seen a difficult period in our relationship, Excellency, our two nations now seek to move ahead.
02:51This requires a candid and constructive approach from both sides.
02:56In that endeavour, we must be guided by the three mutuals, mutual respect, mutual sensitivity, and mutual interest.
03:04Differences must not become disputes, nor competition, conflict.
03:07This fresh chapter in India-China ties comes after years of heightened tensions.
03:15Relations between the two neighbours had hit their lowest point in decades following the Galwan clashes that killed 20 Indian soldiers and an unspecified number of Chinese soldiers.
03:27But recent efforts from both sides have created room for cautious optimism.
03:32For New Delhi, assurances from Beijing on access to critical resources, such as rare earths, alongside promises of normalcy along the border, have added weight to the reset.
03:46Wang Yi's engagements in Delhi this week, capped by his talks with Prime Minister Modi, are being seen as a marker of that reset.
03:55One that will be tested when Prime Minister Modi heads to China later this week.
04:02We'll see you next time.
