00:00Hello and welcome. You're watching India Today Global. I'm Geeta Mohan.
00:10Top news at this hour. India talks tough to China over Arunachal Pradesh provocation.
00:15This is Rao over a traveler from Arunachal Pradesh who was traveling from the UK to Japan via Shanghai
00:24and was detained for hours on end in Shanghai.
00:27Now, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randeer Jaeswal has put out a very strong statement
00:33after the Chinese Foreign Ministry questioned India's position on the state of Arunachal Pradesh,
00:39claiming rights over it. India says Arunachal Pradesh is an integral and inalienable part of India
00:46and this is a self-evident fact. No amount of denial by the Chinese side is going to change this indisputable reality.
00:56Now, Prema, the woman who is traveling to Japan via Shanghai, spoke first to India Today to my colleague,
01:05Pranay Upadhyay, and he joins me for more on this.
01:08A very strong statement, Pranay, coming after the story that you broke on how one Indian woman,
01:15born in Arunachal Pradesh because of the territorial issue and claims that China makes,
01:22was made to wait for more than 18 hours.
01:27Gita, now it is quite clear that the entire intention, whatever Pema has faced at the Shanghai airport
01:34was actually a malafied intention because Chinese authorities could not explain the very reason,
01:40the very objective of her detention and now this has come out with the Chinese reaction
01:46where they called Arunachal Pradesh as so-called illegal setup, which is absolutely an absurd thing
01:52because Arunachal is an inalienable part of India. In fact, Arunachal is India.
01:57So, therefore, the government of India, the Ministry of External Affairs,
02:00has strongly rejected the statement made by the Chinese authorities, Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs
02:05and also clearly stated that no amount of denial can change the requirement,
02:10the very fact on ground that Arunachal is India and in fact, the behavior, the treatment,
02:17you know, of the Chinese authorities, you know, faced by Pema was actually in contradiction
02:22to various convention and in fact, the Chinese own rules that they allow the international passengers
02:29for a transit and visa-free transit up to 24 hours.
02:33So, clearly, Pema who was there during her transit to Japan only for three hours at the Shanghai airport
02:39and the way she was subjected, she was detained. Earlier, they in fact denied the fact that
02:46she was not under detention. However, India contradicted this thing.
02:50India raised this issue not only in Delhi, not only in Beijing, but even at the Shanghai level as well,
02:56at the local authorities level and with the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs
03:00and with the Chinese immigration as well. But this remains a fact that, you know,
03:04whatever rapprochement, whatever, you know, goodwill they want to show,
03:08but this remains a bone of contention. And see, you must have seen the statement issued by the
03:13Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs where the Chinese spokesperson Browning clearly said
03:18they used the Chinese name of Arunachal Pradesh, they call it Southribal Ajang, and they said that
03:24it's an illegal sit-up and China never accepted this thing. So, the clearly intention is evident
03:29that why this thing happened and how they are making this discrimination with people born in
03:36Arunachal Pradesh when they transit, when they travel through China and why they are subjected to
03:39such kind of harassment and treatment.
03:43Right. The matter has been taken up strongly with the Chinese side. And like Pranay was saying,
03:48this is clearly in violation of several conventions governing international air travel.
03:53But let's just listen to what really happened, what Prema Wangjom really went through.
03:59An interview done by Pranay Padya, which was broken yesterday, and there are many reactions that
04:05have come afterward, which includes the Chinese Foreign Ministry and now MEA reacting to the
04:11provocations made by the Chinese Foreign Ministry. But listen in to the conversation
04:15between Pranay Padya and Prema Wangjom.
04:21Can you describe the moment you first realized that the Chinese immigration officers were refusing
04:26your transit and in fact harassing you and citing your Jaya Arunachal Pradesh birthplace
04:32as a point of contention and as a point of harassment for you?
04:36So yes, basically, I only had like a three hour transit in Shanghai. And I was transiting from
04:43there to go on to my onward journey to Japan. And I had actually gone past the immigration gates,
04:51it was E gates. So basically, I just put my passport through and went to the security gates. Obviously,
04:58I was in queue to get through to security, when one of the officials basically came and started
05:04screaming India, India, and with my name, and then she singled me out. So I did ask her,
05:09what is the reason? Like, why are you taking me out? And she basically said to me,
05:15Arunachal, not valid passport, not valid passport.
05:18Not valid passport?
05:20Yes. So I said, do you mean India is not a valid? Like, what do you mean by that?
05:25And then she basically used translate and said, Arunachal is part of China, your passport is
05:32invalid. Basically, then they took me to the near the China Eastern transfer desk. And right next to
05:40that is basically the immigration officer was seated, who was checking various things. But they
05:47didn't give me a timeline. I said, by law, I don't know what you're saying, because Arunachal is part of
05:54India. I've never heard of Arunachal being part of China. We don't have any land property rights in
06:00China. We don't have any access to public funds in China. Our government is Indian. So they basically
06:08just kept holding up and did not give me any specific. I said, can you show me the exact rule
06:16that says Indians cannot transit? No, your passport is not valid. It's invalid. India, no,
06:22China only. Arunachal, China only.
06:27AMIA takes up the matter with the Chinese government, but also Prema Thangjom had written to Prime Minister
06:33Narendra Modi herself for that shifting focus. Now, a new push is underway in Congress to pressure
06:39Trump administration to confront Pakistan's military leadership over a pattern of transnational
06:45repression, including threats and intimidation targeting pro-democracy Pakistani activists
06:51living in the United States of America. Representatives from the Democratic Party, Greg Kasser and
06:58Pramila Jayapal, both members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, are leading a congressional letter
07:04urging the administration to hold Pakistan's military and civilian authorities accountable
07:10for actions that critics say extend far beyond the country's borders. The initiative is backed by
07:16several Pakistani American grassroots groups. According to the groups, Pakistan's military
07:21establishment has intensified its crackdown on dissent since the disputed since February 2024 disputed
07:29elections, which were marred by allegations of mass voter suppression, ballot manipulation,
07:35and fraud aimed at sidelining former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his party.
07:46The United States of America has designated Venezuelan President Nicola Maduro, his top allies,
07:52and the alleged cartel de los solos, as members of a foreign terrorist organization. That's
07:58under the FTO escalating Washington's crackdown on Venezuelan drug networks. Mahashwetalala with this report.
08:12In yet another action to impose crackdown on Venezuelan drug cartels, the United States
08:18administration has designated Venezuelan President Nicola Maduro and his government allies as members of a
08:25foreign terrorist organization. The United States has also designated cartel de los solos, Spanish for
08:34cartel of the Sons, which he alleges is headed by Maduro as an FTO.
08:38Hagan lo que hagan. Whatever they do, however they do it, wherever they do it,
08:48they will not be able to defeat Venezuela.
08:53We are invincible. Whatever they do, they have not been able to beat our homeland, and they never will.
09:00Hagan una mueca, hagan otra mueca.
09:02They can make faces. They can say this and that. We are shielded to guarantee what we guarantee.
09:09Bolivar's dream. Peace.
09:16This will authorize Trump to impose fresh sanctions targeting Maduro's assets and infrastructure,
09:22though according to many experts, does not authorize the use of lethal force.
09:26We view the Maduro regime as being illegitimate, and the president has been very satisfied with the
09:35successful strikes against narco-terrorists and foreign terrorists that are illegally trafficking
09:41drugs towards the United States of America. He's not going to tolerate that, and you can expect to
09:45see those strikes continue. The labeling of cartel of the Sons as a terrorist group empowers the U.S.
09:53law enforcement agencies to target and dismantle it. Maduro has always denied any involvement in
09:59drug trafficking, and his government has denied the existence of the cartel.
10:06As part of Operation Southern Spare, the U.S. military has amassed more than a dozen warships
10:12and 15,000 troops in the region. Images of the United States Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff,
10:19General Dan Kane, showed him inspecting the José Aponte airfield at the former Roosevelt
10:25Rhodes Naval Base in Ceiba and speaking with military officers.
10:30This comes as the U.S. plans to launch a new phase of Venezuela-related operations in the coming days.
10:37Meanwhile, a show of force was displayed at the former Roosevelt Rhodes Naval Base in Puerto Rico.
10:42The United States has been carrying out lethal strikes on drug cartel boats.
10:48They allege that boats carrying narcotics are moving along non-trafficking route in international waters.
10:54With Mahashweta Lala, Bureau Report, India Today.
10:57U.S. President Donald Trump has begun the process of designating certain Muslim Brotherhood chapters as well
11:10as foreign terrorist organizations and specially designated global terrorists.
11:14This would bring sanctions against one of the Arab world's oldest and most influential Islamist movements.
11:21Trump had signed an executive order directing Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Besant
11:28to submit a report on whether to designate any Muslim Brotherhood chapters such as those in Lebanon, Egypt and Jordan.
11:35It orders the Secretary to move forward with any designations within 45 days of the report.
11:40The Trump administration has accused Muslim Brotherhood factions in those countries of supporting or encouraging violent attacks against Israel and U.S. partners
11:50or of providing material support to Palestinian militant group Hamas.
12:00Australia's Senate has suspended far-right Senator Pauline Hanson for seven sitting days after she entered Parliament wearing a burka,
12:08a move widely condemned as a political stunt, a move widely condemned as a political stunt aimed at bolstering her campaign to ban full face coverings.
12:16Here's the report.
12:21Australia's Senate suspended far-right Senator Pauline Hanson for seven sitting days after she wore a burka to Parliament.
12:31Hanson wore the burka as a political prop in her campaign to ban the Muslim attire in public.
12:36Hanson wore the garment shortly after she was denied permission to introduce a bill that would outlaw burkas and other full face coverings in public places in Australia.
12:49The move sparked condemnation from lawmakers leading to a suspension for seven sitting days.
12:54What else would I be talking about, Deputy President, because if this is about the dress code, she is disrespecting her faith.
13:04She is disrespecting the Muslims out there, Muslim Australians.
13:08It's absolutely unconstitutional.
13:10This needs to be dealt with immediately before we proceed.
13:14It's disgraceful.
13:18It is a shame.
13:21Thank you, President.
13:22I move that Senator Hanson be suspended for the Senate for seven sitting days.
13:26So the question is, the motion is moved by Senator Wong be agreed to.
13:29Those of that opinion say aye.
13:31Aye.
13:32Against?
13:33No.
13:34I believe the ayes have it.
13:36This is Hanson's second time wearing a burka as a political prop to push for its national ban.
13:42But Hanson remains defiant.
13:44My position on banning the burka, and I still stand strong by that, if they really believed in what they were saying, they didn't want to ban the burka, yet they denied me the right to wear it on the floor of parliament.
13:58There is no dress code on the floor of parliament, yet I'm not allowed to wear it.
14:03So, to me, it's been hypocritical.
14:08Australia too have been critical for Hanson's political prop.
14:11I think she's a dreadful woman.
14:15She's always tapping into the worst things that Australians can do, and she's just an exhibitionist.
14:28And as far as that stunt she pulled yesterday, I just think it's terrible, and I hope a lot of other people do too.
14:38Hanson, a senator for Queensland, first rose to prominence in the 1990s because of a strident opposition to immigration from Asia and to asylum seekers.
14:50And has long campaigned against Islamic clothing during her parliamentary career.
14:57Hanson's one-nation party has four seats in the Senate, gaining two in May's general election amid rising support for far-right anti-immigration policies.
15:09With Mahashwet Alala, Bureau Report, India Today.
15:16She'll be right, mate.
15:18A day after a suicide attack at the paramilitary force headquarters in Peshawar left six dead, Pakistan bombed several areas in Afghanistan, killing ten people, including nine children.
15:30The resurgence of hostilities amid a fragile ceasefire has ignited concerns of another round of conflict between the two warring nations.
15:37Taliban said the midnight strike by Pakistan in the Gurubuz district or Khors province targeted the house of a civilian.
15:46Airstrikes were also carried out in Qunar and Pakhtika.
15:49The outfit Jamaat-ul-Ahrar or JUA, which comprises soldiers from Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.
15:58Pakistan labelled the attack a foiled terrorist plot.
16:03The incident comes less than two weeks after TTP-linked militants carried out a suicide bombing near an Islamabad court, leaving twelve dead.
