00:00What did you see that you wanted to improve?
00:02Yeah, I think what I learned from,
00:05oh my God, what I learned from guys like him and stuff like that.
00:11You are trying to find a little way to improve.
00:13So I was going back.
00:16I see Bobby Wagner sneaking up over here.
00:18So I'm a little nervous about something potentially going down.
00:22Okay, he's gone away.
00:23Your own self scout, what did you see?
00:25Yeah, I mean, just trying to clean some footwork things.
00:28Another year, the system helped out a lot.
00:30So I was super happy about keeping Cliff.
00:34And now the game kind of slowed down a little bit more for me.
00:37Your teammates love you.
00:39You went out of your way to get that ball for Bill.
00:42Why did you do that?
00:43It was his first one.
00:44I remember my first one.
00:46Terry and Zach, they made sure I got my first one.
00:49So it was only right.
00:51He was too excited.
00:52You know, he scored.
00:53So I had to go get the ball for him.
00:54And you mentioned Terry McLaurin.
00:56Just how frustrating has it been to not have him out here?
01:00I know he'll be coming through the door soon.
01:03I just got to do what I got to do daily.
01:05I know he's working hard and hopefully moving forward soon.
01:09We can get back out there and get some revenue on.
01:11In the meantime, what have you liked about getting to know Debo Samuel a little bit?
01:15I mean, y'all seen it the first way of the game.
01:17Just the electricity he brings and, you know, he kind of set the tone for us moving forward.
01:22He's just a good player in this league.
01:24The expectations so high surrounding this team this season.
01:27You're not going to be surprising anybody anymore.
01:30Just what are your own goals, your own expectations for this season, Jake?
01:35Yeah, I think for us, how can we be better each and every day as a team?
01:39Ultimately in this game, all 32 teams in this league are competing for championships.
01:44So I think that's kind of just the goal is to compete for a championship.
01:47But, you know, you got to take the daily steps to get there.
01:49We know about Terry.
01:50We know about Debo, what he brings.
01:52What about the rookie, Jalen Lane?
01:54What have you seen from him?
01:55Man, he gets better each and every day.
01:57Smart kid.
01:58He is willing to learn.
02:00And he's out here making some plays, so I'm happy for him.
02:02Got a wealth of weapons.
02:04How good can this offense be?
02:05I guess we got to see come week one.
02:07All right, good luck to you the rest of the season.
02:10Guys.
02:11Lisa, thank you.
02:12He's 24 years old.
02:13He comes off older than that.
02:15He is the leader with the Commanders, period.
02:18I thought it was pretty telling right there.
02:20You asked the question, why was this Commanders team so good last year?
02:24And there's a lot of reasons for that.
02:25Good players, young players that played at a high level.
02:28Dan Quinn, the coaching staff.
02:29But that interaction with Bobby Wagner and Jaden Daniels right then during that interview
02:34really shows the family and the togetherness and how close that team is.
02:39For a 14-year veteran to be interacting like that with his franchise quarterback in his
02:44second year, pretty obvious that Jaden Daniels is the leader of this team and has been a great
02:50teammate and has really galvanized the entire group.
02:53Yeah, you see the resume.
02:54The other rookie quarterbacks that you get to the conference championship, Brock Purdy,
02:58Mark Sanchez, Joe Flacco, Big Ben, Sean King.
03:02None of them were the team engine, I would say, that Jaden Daniels was.
03:07I think all those quarterbacks were young.
03:09They were outstanding, but there was a lot more going on.
03:12Jaden Daniels had it on him, and he's the guy that led them to the championship game.
03:17Yeah, didn't necessarily have a great running game overall without his running and didn't
03:22have this dominant defense.
03:24Here's Brooks cutting back.
03:28Taj Brooks gets a block and a big run.
03:34Nice carry by the rookie Brooks.
03:37Egbenogany forces him out, but a 14-yard gain and a nice job blocking out there on the edge.
03:44Yeah, some really good blocking once he reverses field and comes back the other way.
03:49Isaiah Williams, 18-wide receiver, there's a big block right there at the edge.
03:54And Isaiah Williams at wide receiver, Andrew Coker, the tackle who cleaned somebody out,
04:01that helped spring him.
04:04A lot of times you reverse field, Barry Sanders could do it, but not many can.
04:07Here's Browning airing it out for Jones, and he can't stay in bounds.
04:13You know, I'll follow up on Jaden Daniels in that year last year, Joe.
04:18Two things impressed me about his year.
04:20One was when you have a rookie quarterback, usually you're going to turn the ball over
04:24a lot, and yet he protected the football.
04:27They were top ten in terms of not turning the ball over, which really helped them.
04:32The defense wasn't creating a lot of takeaways either, so they would have been in a lot of
04:36hurt had they been turning the ball over.
04:38And then as he went through the year, he got so good at getting through his progressions
04:43and not having to rely on the first guy like so many young quarterbacks do.
04:47He really developed as the year went along.
04:50Here's Brooks trying to show a little bit more between the tackles this time, and Taj gets a couple.
04:56While we were talking to Jaden Daniels, I don't want to shorten Mitchell Tinsley.
05:00Mitch is a receiver they like.
05:03They're a little bit stuck with numbers, but he made a nice catch and picked up a first down
05:08and then another one to Charlie Jones and seen some good stuff here.
05:12Last few plays from Jake Browning.
05:14Yeah, and and for a lot of these guys, even though there may not be a place on this team,
05:19all these scouts around the league are watching the film.
05:21And so whatever they put out there, there's 31 other teams that are taking a look.
05:25And, you know, so you're showcasing what you can do for the entire league.
05:29Browning has to slide, able to find his tight end, I believe Hudson.
05:35And Hudson is able to fight for a first down.
05:38What a good play.
05:40Made 19 catches last year, and that was all effort to get a fresh set.
05:45Yeah, really nice job Jake Browning get outside the pocket.
05:49And Tanner Hudson, who's gotten a lot of opportunities in this game,
05:52just fighting his way and helping pick up the first down.
05:55And what a luxury Cincinnati has with Jake Browning.
05:57A couple of years ago, his rookie year with Joe Burrow going down and Browning having to step in.
06:02And, you know, he had seven starts.
06:05That rookie year went four and three and at least gave him a chance.
06:08But to have a backup that knows his role and has won some games in the league is big.
06:17Brooks gets a couple through for 1900 yards that year, 12 touchdowns, seven interceptions.
06:27And so they are set at the backup quarterback position.
06:30They also have Desmond Ritter on this roster and a rookie Peyton Thorne.
06:34And we are going to see Desmond Ritter before the end of the night.
06:37We'll get a chance to look at him now.
06:39Last year, the Bengals only kept two quarterbacks.
06:44So it's Jake Browning as the backup.
06:48And unless they make the change and go with three, that's what it'll look like going into the year.
06:53Tight end Cam Grandy with the catch.
06:58And third down coming up.
06:59You know, I watched Browning last week and, as you mentioned, didn't get much time last year.
07:06And, again, going back to playing in these preseason games,
07:09especially when you've been able to play and have some starts
07:12and you're wanting to showcase what you can do and you're competitive.
07:15And, you know, you're in there with a lot of young players.
07:18And it can look pretty ugly for a quarterback.
07:24They threw a flag.
07:25They picked it up.
07:26And so third down coming up for Browning.
07:29They're going to have a chance in their own way to make a case for making this roster.
07:47And we talked about them adding former first round pick Noah Fant here recently.
07:53And they're going to use him a lot.
07:54They're down in six.
07:59I think that's a full start.
08:09Yeah, it was Jake Browning being a third-year veteran.
08:13He was trying to draw off Washington.
08:15Full start, number 79 offense, five-yard penalty, third down.
08:20He was trying to draw off the defense, which was smart on his part here on third down,
08:25seeing if maybe he could pick up an easy five and make it even a shorter third down.
08:29But instead, he drew his own guy, Andrew Coker.
08:33And that will bring us to the two-minute warning here at Landover.
08:38It's been a fun game.
08:3914-14 is the score.
08:42Some individual highlights in this one here on the 18th of August on Monday Night Football.
08:49Stay tuned for the All-State Halftime SVPRCJKMS.
09:02Scott Van Pelt, Ryan Clark, Jason Kelsey, Marcus Spears will be along.
09:07First-half takeaways from our game and Adam Schefter with news from around the National Football League.
09:13Joe Flacco, the man on the right, has been named the starter for the Cleveland Browns for week one.
09:18And we need to find out more about Matthew Stafford and his bad back.
09:25Third down here.
09:28Browning over the middle, and he was behind Charlie Jones.
09:35Jones wide open, and Browning missed him.
09:38It's fourth down.
09:39Yeah, that's one that Browning definitely would like to have back.
09:42This is an excellent route by Charlie Jones, and coming off the ball, puts his foot in the ground,
09:47doesn't show what he's going to do going to the middle of the field.
09:49All he had to do is lay it out there in the middle and let him go get it.
09:53And just a big miss by Browning.
09:57It's a 14-14 game.
09:59Not all ties are the same.
10:0036 offensive plays run by the Bengals to the Commander 16.
10:07And the second punt by Rico.
10:12And it takes a good Rico bounce to the five.
10:20And so back to work is the Washington offense.
10:24And we'll see who gets to run the two-minute drill, and the answer is Sam Hartman, who is a second-year pro from Notre Dame,
10:34had off-season shoulder surgery, and needs to show more in the preseason to make this roster.
10:41If, as you said, there is even a spot there with them potentially carrying three quarterbacks.
10:47Yeah, it's always a question as to what these teams are going to do in that regard.
10:51And you hate to give up a roster spot in many situations.
10:56But, yeah, Sam Hartman, as you mentioned, coming off that shoulder surgery, he had a tough night in that first preseason game that he started last week.
11:04Nearly picked.
11:06DJ Ivey flashed in front of Jalen Lane.
11:10And that would have been a bad welcome to the game for Sam.
11:13Yeah, it sure would have.
11:14And DJ Ivey is one of these guys who, battling for this secondary, he's cluing Hartman the entire way.
11:21I mean, he's not threatened whatsoever up the field.
11:24And you see his reaction.
11:26He thought he had an easy one and very easily could have.
11:28Second down and ten, delayed handoff, and up the middle to the ten goes McMichols, where it'll be third down.
11:35The secondary for Cincinnati, they've got some talent, and they've got some depth.
11:39In fact, it's one of the things that Al Golden really liked.
11:43When he got this job evaluating them, he feels like they're going to be pretty solid back there if everybody can get healthy.
11:49Time out is taken here by Cincinnati as we welcome you inside the broadcast booth.
11:56Joe Buck along with Troy Aikman, Laura Rutledge, Lisa Salters down on the field.
12:00And you and I walked into the stadium.
12:02We were scared.
12:03We forgot how to do this, but we've made our way through almost an entire half of football.
12:09It's preseason for us, too.
12:11Here in Atlanta.
12:12I know I've shown some of that.
12:14We'll see if we can clean it up a little bit in the second half.
12:16Bear with us.
12:19We'll get it.
12:21We will be in Chicago for week one on September 8th.
12:25Good matchup on Monday Night Football.
12:27The Vikings and the Bears from Silverfield.
12:32Third down and six.
12:33Sideline shot, spinning try by Sinnott.
12:37It's not there, and it's fourth down.
12:39So three and out for Sam Hartman.
12:44And here it is.
12:45J.J. McCarthy, who was the 10th pick in the 2024 draft.
12:49The first overall pick, Caleb Williams.
12:52McCarthy obviously didn't play.
12:54We'll get our look at him.
12:56Week one.
12:56And they're the numbers for Caleb Williams.
12:58But you and I were watching the game last night.
13:00All of us were.
13:02As we've done.
13:03Caleb Williams looked like a different guy.
13:07Well, he looked like a guy playing quarterback for Ben Johnson's offense.
13:11And it's what you kind of expect.
13:13And I thought.
13:16This is Jones on the return to the 40 and that's it.
13:20You know, you think going into a game like that or into a season for Caleb Williams,
13:24that Ben Johnson is going to bring some things that are going to help him.
13:27One is a run game.
13:28Two is the play action game and getting guys to be able to create some separation.
13:34And that was all on display.
13:35Now, can it continue?
13:36It's going to look a lot different for Caleb Williams going up against that Brian Flores defense
13:41for Minnesota week one.
13:42But on the flip side of that game, J.J. McCarthy, not all first starts are created equal.
13:48And for him in his second year and an entire offseason and having learned the offense a year
13:55ago and all that goes with that, knowing how to be a pro, it's going to look a lot different
14:00this year than it might have last year.
14:03This is so they haven't blown it dead.
14:07Now they do.
14:08It looked like an incomplete pass, but they're going to let him play on
14:11as it is returned for a touchdown for the moment.
14:15Cam Arnold is into the end zone with a ball rolling on the fields.
14:20Quarterback lost possession before his passing arm came forward.
14:24Let's see.
14:24Bumbles covered by the defense in advance.
14:28Well, Russell Yerk is alongside and Russell Yerk.
14:32Tell us what you see.
14:33That's awfully close to an incomplete pass.
14:36It is.
14:36I see some control of that ball as the hand starts forward.
14:40To me, that's an incomplete pass.
14:41And I would expect them to review and reverse this.
14:45They appropriately left.
14:46The cleanest play is under review.
14:49We're inside two minutes, so it's under review.
14:53But there that ball still in his hand after it gets tipped and he's able to go forward with it.
14:59Yeah, correct.
14:59He's got control even if it's with some fingers and the thumb he has control.
15:03After replay review, it's an incomplete pass.
15:06Second down.
15:07Cleland Farrell is the one who got in there for Washington.
15:13Great job with that expedited look.
15:17And they got the call right.
15:18Please reset the game clock to 119, 119.
15:23Yeah, well done by the officials.
15:25Well done by you too, Russell.
15:26I mean, you're one like unlike me.
15:28I'll speak for myself.
15:29You're midseason.
15:32Preseason for everybody.
15:34All right.
15:40Second down in 10 is the Bengals offense comes back out there as they set up at the 40 in this tie game with a minute 19 to go.
15:56Pressure.
16:02Browning got hit, delivered a strike, and there again is Mitch Tinsley.
16:07He's a big target, 6'1", 205, second year pro out of Penn State.
16:13And that's good for 23.
16:14This is an outstanding job by Jake Browning.
16:17He feels pressure.
16:18He knows he's going to get hit.
16:19He has to lay it out there for Tinsley to have a chance, and he did perfectly.
16:24Backpedaling, and that ball.
16:25Did he catch that?
16:26He did.
16:28Unbelievable.
16:29Tinsley with a one-handed grab.
16:32He tipped it to himself and going to the ground, able to secure it for the catch.
16:39That's back-to-back plays.
16:40Jacob Martin.
16:41Second try to find out.
16:41Cincinnati, 30-second time out.
16:43What a catch.
16:44That's back-to-back plays.
16:45Jacob Martin has had pressure for Washington.
16:48Watch this.
16:51It's a great job by him just staying with it.
16:52Again, with pressure, he just has to kind of unload it and just give him an opportunity.
16:57And he comes back and do nice plays now on the football by Tinsley.
17:03Trying to make a case.
17:04Time out is taken before a second down and six by the Bengals.
17:18They're down to one.
17:23They're not going to look at that catch.
17:2548 seconds left in the half.
17:28Browning's made some nice throws.
17:43Floated to the sideline and incomplete for Hudson.
17:46And now third and six.
17:50Well, I mentioned it for Jake Browning.
17:53You're rolling a lot of guys in up front.
17:56And we've seen him having to throw the football, knowing he's going to take some hits.
18:00Having to anticipate with a group of receivers that he doesn't have a whole lot of time with.
18:05And even that last throw, he's got a pocket that's pushed back into his lap.
18:09And I've spent a lot of preseason games watching Jason Garrett battle through some
18:15tough situations with a lot of young players trying to compete and do the best that he could.
18:21Not easy.
18:24Jason will be texting you soon.
18:26Third down and six.
18:29Perfect throw and a catch by Kendrick Pryor.
18:33And Browning could not have dropped it in there any better.
18:3620 yards and into the red zone go the Bengals.
18:40It's a really nice route against this two deep look.
18:44And knowing exactly where the hole was within that zone coverage.
18:48Right in behind the corner and Browning.
18:51Yeah, he's just showing some of the savvy that he has.
18:54As a third year player now in the league at quarterback.
18:57But a nice job also by Pryor.
18:59Kind of slowing it down a little bit.
19:01Knowing that he was in the hole and don't get away from it.
19:04And make it a more difficult throw for your quarterback.
19:11On first down.
19:12End zone Tinsley with a spinning catch.
19:17And I'll say he is opening up some eyes.
19:20He sure is.
19:21He certainly is.
19:22Because he's already made a couple tough catches.
19:25And this one was the best of the bunch.
19:29The ball that's perfectly thrown by Browning.
19:32He's got to have great body control.
19:34Strong hands to be able to come back to that.
19:38On that outside shoulder throw.
19:40And he makes a heck of a play.
19:43Well, you ask Zach Taylor, head coach of the Bengals.
19:46Jamar Chase loving it.
19:49Who has stood out to him among the backup receivers.
19:53And the first name he said was Mitch Tinsley.
19:55Yeah, this guy, he's showing that he can play in the National Football League tonight.
20:01Four targets, four catches, 52 yards.
20:05And that spinning touchdown to put Cincinnati on top.
20:10And Browning, terrific.
20:12Yeah, that wasn't easy for him.
20:13I mean, he was under a lot of duress on a lot of those throws.
20:16Here's a better look at that route.
20:18You know, it's just a simple fade with a press corner down here in the red zone.
20:22And, you know, you've got a defender who's on top.
20:25You recognize it, able to throw it on that outside shoulder.
20:28But being able to make that kind of move, of course, he's been watching it
20:34all training camp with two of the best in Jamar Chase and Tee Higgins.
20:39That's a great job.
20:40Good night by Tinsley.
20:52We will hear from Joe Burrow in the third quarter.
20:57He was involved in three possessions tonight.
21:00Led the team on touchdown drives of 58 yards and 70 yards.
21:06Took some hits.
21:10Comes out of this unscathed.
21:14With 34 seconds left.
21:16McPherson will kick it away for Cincinnati.
21:22And he drives Kaz Allen into the end zone.
21:30Allen up to the 25.
21:33Here is one of the touchdown drives by Joe Burrow tonight.
21:38Yeah, this is pretty good.
21:39When they opened up, they got it to Yossi Bosch,
21:42and they come back to Charlie Jones and Yossi Bosch once again.
21:45And then they're able to get the touchdown on what was really Joe Burrow's best throw of the night.
21:51So week one, nine of ten against the Eagles.
21:57Tonight, nine of 14.
21:58But it ended his night completing his last five passes.
22:01Picked!
22:03Intercepted by Cincinnati.
22:05And Barrett Carter, a linebacker who they think is a steal from the draft.
22:11Fourth-round pick from Clemson.
22:14A return of 13 yards.
22:17And the interception sets up Cincinnati with 20 seconds left in the half.
22:22What a moment for the rookie.
22:25This is so good by him.
22:27He has to carry the middle of the field.
22:29And so he turns, recognizes pass, he's staying on top.
22:33But once his receiver pulls up, he puts his foot in the ground and comes back to the football.
22:37This was a position as a group that they had to improve.
22:42They just were not as solid as they needed to be or what they had been in the past.
22:46Logan Wilson, who had been battling through an injury last year.
22:49They make two draft picks in Demetrius Knight and Barrett Carter.
22:53And Carter has really been impressive.
22:55Both of them have really up to this point.
22:58But Carter does an outstanding job.
23:00And that really is his strength.
23:02Going back to Clemson was his ability to play coverage.
23:06He was textbook on that play.
23:08Under 20 to go.
23:10End zone shot.
23:11Tinsley.
23:12Come on.
23:14Did he catch it?
23:15Touchdown is the call.
23:19Have a night, Mitchell Tinsley.
23:23Well, if you're Washington, Joe, this was a young man in Mitchell Tinsley who began his career with
23:29the Washington Commanders.
23:31And he goes up and makes a play.
23:33Another one.
23:34He has definitely shown that he's going to be on a roster this year.
23:38If not in Cincinnati, it'll be somewhere else.
23:41But if you're Washington right now watching this guy, you'd say,
23:44boy, we could sure use him right now with the Terry McLaurin situation.
23:48Again, he is 6'1", 205, so he's a big target.
23:58And Browning to Tinsley on consecutive offensive plays.
24:04This one after the interception by the rookie, Barrett Carter.
24:08And the young quarterback in his second year, Sam Hartman, has had a rough night.
24:13Boy, I mean, the ball placement there was as good as it gets again.
24:18But Tinsley's got to go up there and make a play on that.
24:21And he's going up against a guy who's 6'2", 200 pounds.
24:24And he goes up over the top and makes another nice catch.
24:30Not an easy play either.
24:32Here's the one that he just had a moment ago, that spinning grab.
24:36Again, great ball placement.
24:37And Tinsley able to secure it going to the ground.
24:41Well, when you have guys down here in the red zone that are able to go up
24:44and make plays on the football like Tinsley has shown now twice,
24:48those are hard guys to see walk.
24:58I mean, again, his head coach mentioned him by name.
25:01So this is not out of nowhere for Mitch Tinsley.
25:06But, I mean, they are stacked on the outside in Cincinnati.
25:13Look at Browning, 10 of 14.
25:14And he was under pressure, as you said.
25:16It was not clean pocket after clean pocket.
25:18He made some throws.
25:20Well, Browning's been making throws to Tinsley in practice.
25:23Yep.
25:23But it's go-to guy.
25:25Kaz Allen gets flipped.
25:29Bengals have put up 14 points in the last 20 seconds.
25:33Kaz Allen for 31 yards as Marco Wilson comes in and hits him low.
25:40And up and over he goes.
25:49Our new director, Artie Kempner, is giving that a 9.5.
25:56Steve Ackles in the truck.
25:58Joyo, our technical director.
26:00We've brought back so many people who help us with stats and numbers and support every week.
26:10And it's good to have everybody back together.
26:17Well, Hartman takes a knee and that'll do it for the first half.
26:20And in a blink, this went from a 14-14 game to 28-14 and night of a lifetime for Mitchell Tinsley.
26:26Let's go down to Lisa.
26:27Dan, Jaden said he wishes he could have gotten more than four plays.
26:32But why were four plays enough for you?
26:34Yeah, he was itching for more.
26:35There's no doubt about it.
26:36He's had an excellent camp and I wanted to get the game experience in to get going.
26:40But we really also were digging in at a lot of spots.
26:43I'm pleased with how we're running the ball.
26:44We've got to take care of it better and create some takeaways defensively.
26:47But that was the reason.
26:48On the other side of the ball, I know you've got a lot of guys who aren't playing tonight.
26:52But I also know you don't care about that.
26:54That's correct.
26:54What has concerned you about your defense, especially on those last two touchdowns?
26:58Yeah.
26:58Number one, I want to make sure we're tackling well, top of the pile.
27:02Then past that, I want to make sure our communication's on point.
27:04And let's really challenge people.
27:06We're at our best when we're down and challenging in the pass game.
27:09They've got a good passing offense.
27:10We've got to challenge more in the second half.
27:12All right.
27:12Thank you, Coach.
27:14Lisa, thank you.
27:15From owner Josh Harris to general manager Adam Peters to head coach Dan Quinn in his second year,
27:21they are in good position here in Landover with the Washington Commanders.
27:2614-point game.
27:27Bengals on top.
27:28The All-State halftime comes your way next.
27:30Tonight's first half highlights are presented by Target.
27:42It's Monday, and it's a treat for you tonight.
27:45He's in.
27:46Touchdown, Cincinnati.
27:47Daniels tap dancing around.
27:49Into the end zone.
27:51Oh, man.
27:51End zone.
27:53Touchdown.
27:53Those were our first half highlights presented by Target.
28:01It was a fun first half.
28:02A lot of points, obviously.
28:0414-point lead for Cincinnati.
28:09And hello from us to you.
28:11Joe Buck, Tori Aikman, the Hall of Famer, Laura Rutledge, Lisa Salters down on the sidelines.
28:16And, well, I guess that first half was a couple things.
28:20Joe Burrow and Jaden Daniels played, showed some good stuff, and didn't get hurt.
28:25And then Mitchell Tinsley is ready for the Hall of Fame.
28:28Good boy.
28:29He sure is.
28:30Let's put him in.
28:31We almost did there in the first half.
28:33Really good half by him.
28:34But I think, overall, you look at these games like this and you're evaluating a lot of players.
28:38I think there's some things, certainly, for Dan Quinn to feel good about with what they were able to do offensively on the one drive they had with Jaden Daniels defensively.
28:46He showed some good things as well, along with some of these young players for Cincinnati.
28:49I mean, Zach Taylor knows what he has on offense with Burrow and his receiving core.
28:55And you're right.
28:56The greatest thing that happened there is the fact that both these quarterbacks came out of the game healthy.
29:00And, really, everyone's come out healthy so far.
29:02Here is a return by Jalen Lane moments ago.
29:08Laura Rutledge caught up with Zach Taylor.
29:13Coach, how do you think Joe Burrow played in this game?
29:15He did a good job.
29:16It's good to get out here in these preseason situations, feel the rush, feel the environment, be in the huddle with his guys.
29:22We took Jamar Tee, Chase Brown out early, so he had to go out there and let us two scores.
29:27You told us about Mitchell Tinsley, and he's proven you right tonight.
29:32What can you say about the job he's done so far?
29:34All he does is work, and so we made him a captain tonight because all he does is work.
29:38All he does is do things the way that we want him done.
29:40He's done out there, and he's rewarded himself with the opportunity, and he's capitalized on that.
29:45It's as simple as that.
29:46All right.
29:46It's been fun to watch.
29:48Joe and Troy?
29:49All right, Laura, thank you.
29:50Yeah, it has been fun to watch, and he's a captain because of what you mentioned tonight,
29:55talking about Mitchell Tinsley, that he was with Washington the previous couple of seasons.
30:00Yeah, and if you're Washington, again, going back to the fact that they've had a hard time
30:05with receivers in practice, kind of wishing they hadn't let him get out of the building.
30:10Bill Joukroski Merritt had that good run.
30:12Now he has stood up.
30:14Penetration by Isaiah Thomas and a loss of five on that play.
30:19Mitchell Tinsley with a couple of touchdowns, and they were beautiful throws and catches.
30:24Well, the one thing about it is when you get into these preseason games, clearly the younger
30:29receivers are going to be the guys who get most of the work and come away with most of the receptions,
30:34but it's one thing to just catch a ball.
30:36It's another thing when you're making the types of catches that Tinsley made down in the red zone.
30:41Pretty impressive what he was able to do.
30:44Hartman to Kroski Merritt making the most out of it.
30:48And just one more note on Tinsley, he's not caught a pass in a competitive game,
30:54not counting preseason since the 2023 Rose Bowl for Penn State against Utah.
31:01So he's getting his opportunity here tonight, making the most of it against his former team,
31:05and now third down and 12 for the Commanders.
31:08Well, this is the time for a guy like him.
31:10We heard Zach Taylor talk about how hard he had been working in practice.
31:14These are the games.
31:15These are the moments where you get a chance to kind of define what your career might look like.
31:20Hartman's going to win that race and get a first down.
31:26He had Howard cross the third to beat out on the edge.
31:30He got around him and then picked up 15 yards for a first down.
31:35That does a good job here of just recognizing that he can get on the edge.
31:38He didn't like what he saw downfield and man coverage.
31:41And he's just able to outrun everybody and does a pretty good job.
31:44I know that when talking with Cliff Kingsbury, really the key for him in this game is
31:49showing some anticipation and really a little more accuracy with the football.
31:53I thought watching him last week, he was very erratic throwing the ball.
31:57Here is a spinning Jeremy McNichols big night on the ground for Cliff Kingsbury's offense.
32:05And it was said by Jayden in this game alone that big part of the offseason was keeping his
32:11offensive coordinator who turned down head coaching job interviews during the Commanders
32:18playoff run and then turned down an interview request from the Saints.
32:22He likes what he's doing here and where they're glad he's stuck around.
32:27Here's crossing merit back to the line of scrimmage.
32:29Well, it didn't go unnoticed what he was able to do with a rookie quarterback and with this offense
32:35in general.
32:36And if they can come out and have the year that they expect to have this year,
32:40you know, he's going to be near the top,
32:41if not at the top of a lot of people's lists that are going to be looking for quarter or court head coaches.
32:47But what a luxury for Dan Quinn to be able to keep his play caller.
32:52Usually when you do something like what Cliff was able to do with a rookie quarterback,
32:56you're gone.
32:56But he got both coordinators still with the team.
32:59Rowe is behind the receiver and that was Lane.
33:04He'll be fourth down.
33:06The offense staying out there.
33:07Cliff Kingsbury was with Patrick Mahomes at Texas Tech.
33:12Head coach in Arizona.
33:14Offensive assistant at USC in 2023.
33:18Worked with Caleb Williams and now his second year with the commanders
33:24as their offensive coordinator.
33:25And his crew is going for it on fourth and five.
33:32Hartman.
33:35Sideline.
33:35Good throw.
33:36And the pass is caught for a first down.
33:40That's Martin.
33:42Tame Martin with a catch for 16 yards.
33:45That's his best throw of the night.
33:46It is.
33:47Look at the protection that he gets up front.
33:49So he's able to just sit in the pocket, not under rush.
33:52But he does anticipate.
33:54I talked about that a moment ago.
33:56It's a two-deep look, meaning in the zone coverage,
33:59that's the hole before the safety behind the corner.
34:03And he turned it loose and does a nice job on that throw.
34:07What are you with it?
34:10Through that interception before the half.
34:12Flag on the play.
34:13Krosky Merritt is dragged down out on the edge by Eric Gregory.
34:20A gain of three.
34:22And the indication is it's against Cincinnati.
34:24Yeah, it looked like one of the linemen for Washington.
34:26All sides.
34:27Lined up in the neutral zone.
34:28Number 51 defense.
34:29Five-yard penalty.
34:30Three play.
34:31First down.
34:31That's Isaiah Thomas.
34:36Well, going back to Cliff Kingsbury, you know, he's,
34:40we showed that he had been a head coach there in Arizona,
34:42had had some success while he was there with Kyler Murray.
34:46And, you know, that second go around,
34:48a little bit like what we saw last year from Dan Quinn.
34:51A lot of these guys, that's when they excel.
34:53Krosky Merritt, nothing well played by this Cincinnati defense.
35:00And no gain.
35:01Howard crossed the third in there on the stop and he was not alone.
35:05There's a guy that's coaching in North Carolina that had a lot of success his second go around.
35:10Yeah.
35:12The great Bill Belichick.
35:13The second out in five.
35:24McNichols.
35:25Well played by Isaiah Thomas.
35:31Well, we've talked a little bit about this running back situation for Washington and.
35:35You know, assuming that Brian Robinson is not back with this team,
35:39which by all indications that appears to be the case.
35:42You've got Austin Eckler who, you know, he's more of a receiver than he is runner.
35:46But Jeremy McNichols, he's one of those backs that really can do everything.
35:49So the versatility that he brings, he's pretty much locked up a spot himself.
35:55And that opens it up then for Chris Rodriguez and Krosky Merritt,
35:58who have both had great outings tonight.
36:00Hartman able to step into it.
36:02This one is caught.
36:04Flag is down on the play is Jalen Lane.
36:08Jaden Daniels says gets better and better every day.
36:12He made a beautiful catch on a 14-yard throw.
36:15Yeah, that's Braylon Lux.
36:16He was grabbing the jersey.
36:17Back to the fair, it's number 33 defense.
36:19The penalties declined.
36:20It's all the play is the first down.
36:22Well, they didn't call it on Lux, but they could have.
36:25You saw the jersey tug as he's coming out of that route.
36:29But that ball's thrown perfectly.
36:30So what Hartman didn't necessarily show last week, he's done some good things.
36:36He's thrown with anticipation, which is what Kingsbury was wanting to see.
36:41And then the ball placement and the accuracy on that last throw.
36:44There we go, 49.
36:45What a catch by the rookie from Virginia Tech, third-round pick.
36:50First down.
36:52Krosky Merritt is met in the backfield and lost about a yard and a half.
37:00Good opening drive here at the start of the second half for Washington.
37:04Can they convert?
37:05And we haven't talked a lot about Trey Hendrickson either.
37:08But, you know, boy, Al Golden, he's definitely got to want that guy.
37:14I mean, you would consider his production the last several years here in Cincinnati,
37:18leading the league last year.
37:20And can't imagine this team being what they need to be defensively without him.
37:24Second and 11.
37:27Krosky Merritt cannot make.
37:29Shaka Hayward missed.
37:31Good tackle by Hayward, the second-year linebacker from Duke.
37:36Yeah, that's what you want to see from these linebackers.
37:41And as Al Golden has talked about, they have really improved that room.
37:46And to come up and be able to make a play on a guy who's pretty tough to get to the ground
37:51in the open field, that's good work by him.
37:55Now third down and 13.
37:5614th play of this drive to start the second half.
38:00And Andy, we're done.
38:02And Andy, we're done.
38:04And Andy, we're done.
38:08Pressure.
38:09Hartman steps through.
38:11Foot race.
38:12Gets hit hard inside the five.
38:16That was Marco Wilson who made the tackle and the hit on an earlier kickoff.
38:21He delivered the hit.
38:22Hartman pops right back up after a gain of 10.
38:25Yeah, that looked a little bit dangerous there.
38:27Marco Wilson, as he comes in, goes right to the head there with the arm and the shoulder.
38:31And you saw the head snap a little bit there by Sam Hartman.
38:36Good to see him get up off the ground.
38:40So he's okay.
38:41And again, the commanders are going to go for it on fourth and three.
38:50That's going to be a false start.
38:51Bobby Hart.
38:56Bobby Hart.
38:57False start.
38:58Number 51 offense.
38:59Five-yard penalty.
39:01Fourth down.
39:02And that will change the mind of Dan Quinn as the field goal unit comes on for Washington.
39:09Instead of fourth and three, fourth and eight.
39:11Matt Gay.
39:15Who has been with a few teams now.
39:18His fourth in the NFL.
39:21Former fifth round pick by the Buccaneers in 2019.
39:24It was with the Rams when they won the Super Bowl.
39:26Indy the last couple of years.
39:30There's his season with the Colts a year ago.
39:32Yeah, his season last year.
39:33His six misses were all 50 plus yards.
39:38Able to knock it through.
39:39Laura Rutledge will be with Jamar Chase when we come back.
39:4427-yard field goal.
39:47Makes it an 11-point game.
39:50Here at Lando.
39:59Welcome back.
40:00We're joined by Jamar Chase, the Bengals wide receiver.
40:03You got a chance to get out there tonight.
40:04How did it feel?
40:05It felt good just getting a chance to go out there,
40:08play against their ones, get some good reps in, and just have fun.
40:11Joe Burrow mentioned how important it is for his timing and rhythm to be out here
40:16in the preseason.
40:17What does it do for you as a receiver?
40:20Keeps all of us aligned.
40:22Make sure the chemistry is still there.
40:23Make sure we still know what we know.
40:26Make sure we expect the ball on certain routes, get certain coverages.
40:29Like he said, it's a big thing on timing.
40:31How do you guys pick up where you left off as an offense?
40:36We just got to stay on track.
40:37Remember how we started and just finished better than we did in the past previous years.
40:43You got to execute.
40:44That's what it's all about.
40:44And, you know, help the younger guys get in and, you know, play their role and let them play football.
40:50Do you feel like you got to hold on to a roster spot with how Mitchell Tinsley's going off tonight?
40:54Yeah.
40:55Nah, man.
40:56You love to see that from the younger guys.
40:58You know, we go so hard at practice.
41:00It's great to just see it happen in the game.
41:02And pretty cool for him to do it against a team that he was with before.
41:06What have the conversations been like on the sideline praising him?
41:09Yeah, actually, I didn't know that until today.
41:10So that's pretty cool that he's actually, you know, doing that against his former team.
41:14So I told him, man, he keep going.
41:16He's going to have an opportunity to play with the ones.
41:18And, you know, he keep going and playing his game and keep playing his game at the highest level.
41:22He's going to be good.
41:23T. Higgins told me he's noticed a little more vocal leadership out of Joe Burrow
41:27this offseason.
41:28What have you noticed?
41:30I've been here for a long time.
41:31I feel like I've seen this every year from him.
41:34You know what I'm saying?
41:36Me and him always talking.
41:38I always see him talking.
41:39But, you know, I don't really see much difference from here every year.
41:42I just see that he loves what he does.
41:44All right, so he's just being loud to T, apparently.
41:47Nobody else.
41:48Of course.
41:49Now, he's being loud to everybody.
41:50But for me, you know, I've always seen him as a vocal leader.
41:54But now he's probably being more vocal.
41:56But I've always seen him as a vocal leader.
41:58What are your expectations for this team?
42:00My expectations is really just to win the AFC North and get into the playoffs.
42:07That's the biggest thing.
42:07And that's our first step.
42:08You've been in camp.
42:09You've seen the changes that have been made by Zach Taylor.
42:12Do you feel like this team is on its way to do that?
42:14Yeah, I think we've got a good chance going on.
42:17A great defense scheme going on.
42:19A lot of young guys playing.
42:20So, everybody's got to grasp down on what's the information that they're getting
42:23and putting it into play.
42:24We've seen Trey Hendrickson out here tonight.
42:27And in talking with him, he's talked about how important it is for him
42:31to keep showing up for this team, even though he's going through
42:33what he's going through with his contract situation.
42:35What have you seen out of his leadership and his presence in camp?
42:38I've seen everything from Trey, man.
42:41He's always on it.
42:42He comes in on time.
42:43He does what he's supposed to do.
42:45He's at meetings.
42:46You know, he's in the team meetings, too.
42:48So, he's still being a leader at the end of the day,
42:50and that's what you want from a guy like him.
42:51And, you know, I did it, and then he's doing it.
42:56So, it's like, you know, we both talking to each other throughout the process.
42:58So, you know, as long as I make sure he's level-headed like he did with me,
43:02then we'll be okay.
43:03Yeah, what have you said to him?
43:04Just making sure you stay focused, man.
43:07Don't forget what's the reason.
43:09Like, don't forget your why at the end of the day.
43:11And that's all I want to let him know is keep pushing himself.
43:13And he's going to be great.
43:14Great advice, Jamar.
43:16Joe?
43:17Laura, thank you.
43:19He got paid four years, $161 million deal.
43:24They paid Tee Higgins four years, $115 million.
43:28Here's pressure on Browning.
43:29He finds Taj Brooks, who takes it into Washington territory.
43:35They paid Mike Gusecki, their tight end, but in essence, third receiver to come back.
43:40They've got $69 million per year combined to their top two receivers, and they are worth every penny.
43:51This is as good a group as you can find.
43:55Burrell led the league in pass yards.
43:58Jamar Chase led in catches, receiving yards.
44:01Tee Higgins got his money.
44:04It's there on offense.
44:05The question is, is the defense going to be better?
44:08Second down and four for the Bengals.
44:10The backup's playing.
44:11Browning floats it.
44:12Nearly picked.
44:16Flag on the play.
44:17Flag on the play.
44:18We'll see what the call is here.
44:20But, Joe, it's just, it's hard for me.
44:23They're going to call holding there on Cincinnati.
44:25It's hard to imagine.
44:26Holding, offense, number 32, 10-yard penalty, replay, second down.
44:31That this defense can be better without Trey Hendrickson.
44:34He was essentially the only guy who could rush the passer.
44:37He had just under 50% of the sack total last year, and you lose him.
44:42Granted, they went out and they drafted Shamar Stewart,
44:44but is he going to replace Trey Hendrickson, and then who do you have opposite of him?
44:49So, I just can't imagine.
44:51Now, if they're looking for a trade, I would think that Washington would be a suitor.
44:55I think Buffalo would be as well as Detroit.
44:58To me, those are the three teams that could use a guy like Trey Hendrickson
45:02and be vastly improved and do some real damage.
45:06But I just can't see them, and I understand.
