Joe Burrow on Cincinnati Bengals' Preseason Win Over Washington
Transcript
00:00Yeah, some good, some bad. Some plays I'd like back, obviously.
00:04Mistakes that we can't make in the regular season they made tonight,
00:07but that's why it's the preseason.
00:09Take that sack on the second series, so who's going to learn?
00:12Is that going to be it for the night? Were you adamant to have one more?
00:15Yeah, the plan was around three, so it was good to get another one.
00:20Based on what you've seen at practice, obviously there's only been two games,
00:24a small step besides what we've been able to see from starting offense in the preseason games,
00:28but do you feel comfortable about your pocket and your protection so far, especially internally?
00:34I do, yeah, I do.
00:37We'll make work with whatever we've got, but I think it's been pretty good.
00:45We didn't go up against the ones last week, but today we did,
00:48and I felt pretty comfortable back there.
00:51What about the run game, Joe?
00:52A big part of pass protection is having a run game to complement that.
00:56And this year it seemed like coming, you guys are more committed to the run?
01:00Yeah, I think we've been efficient so far.
01:02Game one I thought we were really good.
01:05Today I think, I'm not sure what we would have averaged,
01:09but it felt like we got three, four, five, six yards every time we tried to.
01:14So if we can do that, that will be a recipe for success for us.
01:18And a big point about this also has been getting a yard when you need a yard.
01:21The fourth and goal will take us through, you know, Chase getting it over there.
01:26Yeah, it was really a great run by him.
01:28They had two extra guys at the point of attack,
01:32and Chase just made a great, great physical, hungry run to get in the end zone.
01:37That's what we need this year.
01:38The third drive was a third drive with a cast of characters.
01:44You're not always on the field with Zach.
01:46It said you mentioned you'd like to get in there with guys like that.
01:50Why and how did you think it went?
01:52I don't think it's any secret that we've had to play games without T and Jamar in the past.
01:57You know, that's football.
01:57Guys are going to get dinged up.
01:58Guys are going to miss some games.
02:00I've missed games.
02:01That's life in the NFL.
02:03And so you need guys to step up, and I need reps with those guys at some point.
02:10And, you know, in practice we haven't really had that.
02:12You know, we've been healthy, and T and Jamar have been out there,
02:14and Dre has been out there.
02:17And so that getting reps with Chalk and Mitch and Dre out there in different situations
02:23and different positions and running different routes, that's very valuable.
02:27Do you think Mitch made the club?
02:29I sure hope so.
02:29I know you're probably not ready to rule anything out,
02:33but it seems like this could have been the end of your preseason
02:36based on the fact that you played in both games.
02:38If it is and this is all you play in the preseason,
02:41can you tell us just how you feel about being able to get those snaps in the preseason
02:45and just overall how you're feeling about your game in particular
02:48and the offense heading into the season?
02:50Yeah, we'll see.
02:50We'll have those conversations this week.
02:52I know it's a short week, so I doubt it.
02:54But I always find those reps valuable, and I can get better from those.
02:59So, you know, whatever Zach decides, I'm happy to go out there and play as well.
03:06Some good learning experiences in the couple drives that we've had.
03:10Got some fumbles out of the way, so that was good.
03:15Yeah, those are just incredibly valuable reps that usually work out those kinks
03:19in the first couple weeks of the regular season,
03:21and we've worked them out the last two weeks.
03:23Would you say it's fair to say this is as prepared as you've ever felt heading into a season?
03:28We've still got two weeks, so not yet because we still have two weeks of prep left.
03:34Ask me again in two weeks, and maybe I'll have an answer for you.
03:37Okay, I will.
03:38You pointed out earlier that a lot of these extensions get done closer to week one.
03:43That's just how the business works.
03:44Has your confidence wavered at all with Trey's situation just now you're getting closer to week one?
03:52Yeah, I don't know.
03:53I think historically these deals with us have gotten done closer to week one.
04:00I signed on the Thursday before the first game.
04:05Jamar's started to pick up that week before last year, too.
04:11And we were able to get T and Jamar done early this year, so that was great.
04:15But I think historically the way we've done business is that tends to pick up here in the next two weeks,
04:22so we'll see.
