President Donald Trump welcomed his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky to the Oval Office on Monday, striking a markedly more conciliatory tone than during their televised confrontation six months ago and not ruling out the possibility of U.S. troops helping defend Ukraine if a three-way meeting with Zelensky, Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin didn't come together soon.

“If we don’t have a trilat, then the fighting continues," Trump said, with Zelensky by his side, adding, "I think if we have a trilat, there’s a good chance of maybe ending it.”

00:00Well, thank you very much.
00:01It's an honor to have the President of Ukraine with us.
00:06We've had a lot of good discussions and a lot of good talks.
00:09And I think progress is being made, very substantial progress in many ways.
00:14We had a good meeting, as you know, just a short while ago with the President of Russia.
00:21And I think there's a possibility that something could come out of it.
00:24And today's meeting is very important.
00:26We have, I guess, the seven very powerful leaders from Europe.
00:31And we're going to be meeting with them right after this meeting.
00:34And thank you very much for being here.
00:37The President, if I can, first of all, thank you for the invitation.
00:42And thank you very much for your efforts, personal efforts to stop killings and stop this war.
00:48Thank you. And using this opportunity, many thanks to your wife, First Lady of the United States.
00:55And she sent a letter to Putin about our children, abducted children.
00:59And my wife, First Lady of Ukraine, she gave the letter.
01:06It's not to you, to your wife.
01:08Oh, I won't.
01:09I won't.
01:11Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:12So we're saying this is a sensitive topic, yeah.
01:14Yes, please.
01:15And thanks to our partners that you supported this format, that after our meeting we can
01:20have leaders who are around us, the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Finland, EU NATO, I mean,
01:27all partners around Ukraine supporting us.
01:31Thanks to them.
01:32Thank you very much for the invitation.
01:35Thank you very much for being here.
01:37First of all, you know, we live under each day attacks, you know, that today have been
01:42a lot of attacks and a lot of wounded people and the child was dead, a small one, one year
01:49and a half.
01:51So we need to stop this war to stop Russia and we need support American and European partners.
01:57And we will do our best for this.
02:01So, and I think we showed that we are strong people and we supported the idea of the United
02:06States personally of President Trump to stop this war, to make a diplomatic way of finishing
02:14this war.
02:15And we are ready for trilateral, as President said, this is a good signal about trilateral.
02:20I think this is very good.
02:23We're going to have a meeting.
02:24I think if everything works out well today, we'll have a trilateral.
02:28And I think there will be a reasonable chance of ending the war when we do that.
02:31Okay.
02:32Is this the end of the road for American support for Ukraine?
02:36Is today's meeting deal or no deal?
02:40I can never say that.
02:42It's never the end of the road.
02:43People are being killed and we want to stop that.
02:46So I would not say it's the end of the road.
02:48No, I think we have a good chance of doing it.
02:50It's been almost four years now that a lot of people were killed last week.
02:55A lot of people last week.
02:56I mean, millions of people killed.
02:58But a lot of people last week, for whatever reason, a big number, a lot of soldiers, both
03:03on both sides.
03:05And I know the President.
03:07I know myself.
03:08And I believe Vladimir Putin wants to see it ended.
03:10You look fabulous in that suit.
03:12I said the same thing.
03:13Yeah, look, you look good.
03:14I said the same thing.
03:15Yeah, looks good on you.
03:16I said the one that attacked you last time.
03:18See?
03:19I remember that.
03:20Yeah.
03:21I apologize to you.
03:22You look wonderful.
03:23No, my first question for you, President Zelensky.
03:24But you are in the same suit.
03:26You see, I changed you, I'm off.
03:30Maybe yours is much better than mine.
03:33Real quickly, upon peace, God willing to get peace, are you open to holding an election in
03:38your country?
03:39Yes, of course, we are open for election, yes.
03:42We have to do safety in circumstances.
03:46And a little bit, we need to work in the Parliament, because during the war you can't have elections,
03:52but we can do security.
03:55We need, maybe, how to say, we need a truth, yes, everywhere, on the battlefield, in the sky,
04:01to see, yeah, to make possible for people to do democratic, open, legal, legal elections.
04:09So, we are ready.
04:10So, you say during the war you can't have elections.
04:13So, let me just say, three and a half years from now.
04:17So, you mean if we happen to be in a war with somebody?
04:20No more elections.
04:22Oh, that's good.
04:23I wonder what the, I wonder what the fake...
04:25You're lying this idea.
04:26Yeah.
04:27I don't think you need a ceasefire.
04:28You know, if you look at the six deals that I settled this year, they were all at war.
04:32I didn't do any ceasefires.
04:35And I know that it might be good to have, but I can also understand strategically why,
04:41well, you know, one country or the other wouldn't want it.
04:44You have a ceasefire and they rebuild and rebuild and rebuild and, you know, maybe they
04:48don't want that.
04:49But if you look at the six deals that we made peace and, you know, long-term, long-running
04:54wars, I didn't do any ceasefires.
04:58Would I like?
04:59I like the concept, you know, I like the concept of a ceasefire for one reason, because you'd
05:03stop killing people immediately, as opposed to in two weeks or one week or whatever it
05:08takes.
05:09But we can work a deal where we're working on a peace deal while they're fighting.
05:13They have to fight.
05:14I wish they could stop.
05:15I'd like them to stop.
05:16But strategically, that could be a disadvantage for one side or the other.
05:20But all of these deals I made without even the mention of the words ceasefire.
