Oregon Ducks Wide Receiver Malik Benson discusses how he took on a leadership role while being new to the team
Transcript
00:00I was over there and he told us that he's already learned a lot from you.
00:07Despite you kind of being a newer guy here.
00:09How did you kind of take on that role of you're new here, but
00:13you are a senior and you do have things you can pass on?
00:15Like how's that experience?
00:16It was like you said, I'm a senior, so I'm one of the oldest.
00:19Well, I am the oldest guy and the receiver, one of the oldest guys on the team.
00:23So it's like just playing under coach Saban, things like that, I learned a lot.
00:27And it's really, I had to come out of my comfort zone, being here and
00:31being in a room with a lot of younger guys.
00:33I had to really step up and become a leader if we want this season to be the way we
00:38want it to be.
00:39What's the most about this young group?
00:41They're willing to listen and do extra work.
00:43I've been in places that is very one sided and things like that.
00:47But to see when somebody hits the group chat, no matter if it's a walk on,
00:51no matter if it's a guy that's gonna get a lot of reps, just guys willing to do the
00:56work and willing to listen and ask questions and things like that.
00:59What do you feel like maybe being a teacher or leader maybe helps your game?
01:02Because sometimes when you're not thrown in a role you've never been into,
01:05you don't know how you can grow from it.
01:06How have you grown from the role you've been thrown into in this situation?
01:10It just forces me to have to know my things to a T.
01:14And not only just knowing what I have, I have to know what the guy next to me has.
01:19So just being able to be a leader and
01:21to be that older guy and have younger guys look up to me.
01:26I have to hold the standard of what it means to be at Oregon.
