00:00Life in the coldest inhabited place on earth is not easy and even seemingly simple daily task can
00:19take a whole day. Locals dedicate their weekends to doing laundry and washing in their wooden
00:27bathhouse the only option for maintaining personal hygiene in a region without running water.
00:35To get the bathhouse to the right temperature Stanislav and his son must start heating it well
00:40in advance. The bathhouse in Yakutia are heated by wood burning stoves and the temperature inside
00:55the steam room can reach up to 70 degrees or higher. It takes them to five hours and requires a lot of
01:03wood. Because it takes so long the locals will usually shower only once or twice a week.
01:16As the bathhouse slowly heats up Stanislav and Rulustan set out to get the water from the garden
01:22snow making sure to gather enough for both washing and laundry.
01:36Rulustan is 13 years old, the third child in his family and a student at a local middle school.
01:42Despite his young age he has already learned the necessary skills to survive in the extreme climate
01:48and is always there to help his father.
02:09With the water collected and the bathhouse heated, Zinaida, the wife of Stanislav and their 16-year-old
02:15daughter Julia are ready to begin their weekly laundry.
02:32Every Sunday the two of them wash the family's clothes by hand using the snow water that Stanislav
02:37and Rulustan have collected from the garden. With a large family to care for there's a lot of laundry
02:43to get through. Despite the heavy workload, Zinaida and Julia work diligently together to ensure that
02:49the family has clean and fresh clothes for the week ahead.
03:00Meanwhile, Rulustan is helping his father in another important task of heating their home.
03:05The harsh winters in Yakutia require filling up the stove with wood twice or even three times a day
03:11for nine months of the year.
03:19As the heat from the fireplace starts to warm the house,
03:22Julustan hurries to the outdoor toilet, a small shed that covers a pit.
03:29While using an outdoor toilet may seem less convenient, it's actually more hygienic.
03:34The frozen temperatures make it difficult to have working pipes,
03:38which would easily freeze and indoor toilets without sewage would become quite unpleasant.
03:58In the meantime, Zinaida and Julia finished washing their clothes.
04:01They hung the freshly cleaned garments outside in the garden to dry in the freezing winter air.
04:13This is a traditional method that helps to kill any remaining germs,
04:17leaving the clothes creeps and refreshed.
04:23The freezing winds in Yakutia work quickly, causing the wet clothes to stiffen and becomes as hard as
04:42ports within minutes.
04:43In the dry, frosty air, the wet clothes freeze and slowly evaporate due to the dryness of the air,
04:56although there is still some moisture on the fabric.
04:59the wet clothes to dry in the dry, the wet clothes to dry in the dry, the wet clothes to dry in the dry.
05:22With skillful hands, Zinaida expertly gathers the frozen laundry and brings it back inside.
05:27The laundry absorbs the refreshing scents of winter, making it especially sweet to sleep on.
05:34The laundry continues to dry in the dry, the wet clothes to dry in the dry.

05:59As the evening approaches, Zinaida busys herself with preparing dinner while the boys
06:06get ready for their bath.
06:12After hours of heating the bath house to a sweltering 70 degrees Celsius, Stanislav
06:17and Julius relax in the heat of the steam room, especially as the outside temperature
06:22drops to minus 50 degrees, which is 120 degrees colder.
06:34Once finished, Stanislav and Julius run outside to cool off in the freezing cold air.
06:39The difference between the hot steam room and the cold air is believed to have many health
06:44benefits, including improving circulation and invigorating the body.
06:51After cooling down, they use the melted snow water and soap to wash away any remaining
06:56sweet and to clean themselves.
07:07While Stanislav and Julius are washing in the bath house, Zinaida and Julia are busy making
07:12their favorite dumplings filled with minced beef.
07:19food.
07:20Zinaida is well known in the village for her delicious cooking skills and is always teaching
07:35her daughter new dishes and training in the kitchen.
07:42how he works to 220 degrees Celsius as well when they are serving her upbringing.
08:06When the dumplings are prepared, they put them on the terrace outside to keep them frozen while they are in the bathhouse.
08:13The cold temperatures outside helps to preserve dumplings, enduring that they are ready to cook and serve once they return from the bath.
08:36It's dinner time. Zinaida returns from the bathhouse refreshed and ready to cook a delicious soup with dumplings for her family.
08:44In Yakutia, most people make soup every day. It's a nourishing food that helps to stay hydrated and warm in this cold, dry climate.
08:53On this Sunday evening, they can finally take a moment to rest and unwind after a long and busy day.
